Columbia Records says Amy Winehouse’s final recording, a duet with Tony Bennett, will be released this September to benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charitable organization that helps children and young people. “Body and Soul” was recorded this past March at Abbey Roads Studios in London and will be included on Bennett’s Duets II album.

In the press release announcing “Body and Soul,” Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse stated, “We wanted to make a positive difference and help a range of causes close to Amy’s heart. This could include help for children in trouble, suffering from health problems, children’s hospices and more.”

“While it is separate from my campaign to find more help for young addicts, that may be one of the areas that Foundation contributes to. We intend to raise funds and distribute them to individual projects who apply for help. I couldn’t be happier that everyone involved with Amy and this recording felt they wanted to contribute.”

Mr. Winehouse added, “Amy was so excited to be working with Tony Bennett and really looking forward to her fans hearing this new recording. The fact that Amy’s voice is sounding as amazing and beautiful as ever and she is singing with the great Tony Bennett seems the most fitting tribute of all at this very difficult time.”

Bennett’s Duets II will be released to coincide with the legendary singer’s 85 birthday. In addition to Winehouse, Duets II features performances from Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble, Norah Jones, John Mayer, Queen Latifah, and Carrie Underwood.

Here she is – Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final Batman movie from writer/director Christopher Nolan. Warner Bros’ first official photo, which they made available on the movie’s website, shows Hathaway in a tight black outfit.

However, WB smartly decided to show only a small portion of her costume – and this could be what Hathaway wears as Selina rather than as Catwoman. It’s also possible that her Catwoman outfit will dramatically differ from past incarnations of the character (there are reports this Catwoman’s outfit is more practical and less sexy than has been seen before).

The Dark Knight Rises starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and Hathaway will be released on July 20, 2012.

‘The Guard’ Movie Review’

Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson in 'The Guard'

Are you looking for more Brendan Gleeson in your life? Of course you are, what a silly question. Would you like a dash of Don Cheadle thrown in as well? Duh, what am I thinking?

To scratch those particular itches, one needs to look no further than The Guard. Written and directed by John Michael McDonagh and now playing in select theaters, this off-beat and irreverent comedy is sure to be unlike any film you see the rest of this year.

Gleeson plays Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a loud mouth, politically incorrect, escort-loving, bowling ball of a police officer in a less than bustling Irish town. His little piece of paradise is thrown for a loop, however, when drug traffickers decide to close a major deal in the area. Their presence brings out Wendell Everett (Cheadle), a well-respected FBI agent who has surely never had to work with a member of law enforcement quite like Boyle. Together, they take on the criminals and learn to see past their differences along the way.

Gleeson delivers an excellent performance, shading every line of dialogue with a range of emotions. The subplot between him and his mother (Fionnula Flanagan) is both touching and comedic, giving the audience a glimpse of how Sergeant Boyle became who he is. And while Cheadle is far more of a supporting character than a true co-lead, the opportunities he and Gleeson have to verbally spar illuminate his character subtly and efficiently.

At its core, The Guard is a buddy cop film but done at the highest level. There’s no pandering to the lowest common denominator here, Boyle and Everett both speak their minds and touch a few nerves. But if you don’t mind some straight talk and impolite racial/cultural humor, this is the funniest film of the year by a mile. Not to be outdone by the leading actors are the drug traffickers themselves: Liam Cunningham, David Wilmot, and Mark Strong. Each of them brings something different to their villainous dynamic and through more great dark humor, keeps the laughs coming.

What holds everything together and elevates this from your average genre film is a supremely written script. McDonagh remembered not only to write funny lines but to develop the characters along the way. It’s an all too common mistake these days and can mean a world of difference. While this production may be too small to gain traction amongst the sea of Hollywood fare, don’t be too surprised to see this as a nominee on the Best Original Screenplay list of the San Diego Film Critics Society come the end of the year (if I have anything to say about it).

Any fan of independent films should make sure to catch The Guard before it disappears. It’s far and away a more entertaining experience than 95% of its cinematic brethren this year and deserves to be noticed and appreciated by as many people as possible.

GRADE: A-

The Guard hits theaters on August 5, 2011 and is rated: R for pervasive language, some violence, drug material and sexual content.

Film Clip: ‘Griff the Invisible’

True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten shows off a completely different side starring in the independent Australian film, Griff the Invisible, coming to theaters in limited release later this month. Kwanten stars as a shy office worker by day who turns into a heroic costume-clad protector of the innocent each night.

And if you only know Kwanten from his work in HBO’s hit vampire series, his performance in this indie film will open your eyes to what he’s truly capable of delivering.

The Plot:

Griff (Kwanten), a shy and awkward office worker by day, finds escape from his ordinary life by assuming the identity of a fantastic superhero each night. Griff’s secret is jeopardized when he meets Melody (Maeve Dermody), a cute but unconventional daydreamer. She quickly becomes fascinated by his idiosyncrasies, which are equal only to her own.

In the face of mounting pressure to live in the “real world,” it’s up to Melody to rescue Griff the Invisible for the sake of herself, Griff and their newfound love for each other.

‘The Power of Six’ Book Details

The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore
The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore

The 2011 sci-fi action drama I Am Number Four is based on the first in a series of books by Pittacus Lore (real name: James Frey) known as the Lorien Legacies. And before I Am Number Four hit theaters, it was thought the DreamWorks Pictures production would be the first film in a franchise based on Lore/Frey’s books. However, I Am Number Four failed to catch on with audiences, and it’s highly unlikely at this point that DreamWorks (or any studio, for that matter) will want to spend the $100 million-ish it would take to keep the franchise going with the second book of the series: The Power of Six.

Of course, the book series exists independent of any film versions, with the second book going on sale on August 23rd.

The Official The Power of Six Synopsis: In the beginning they were a group of nine. Nine aliens who left their home planet of Lorien when it fell under attack by the evil Mogadorians, who scattered on Earth and went into hiding, who look like ordinary teenagers, but who have extraordinary skills. The Mogadorians killed Number One, Number Two, and Number Three. They tried to kill Number Four, John Smith …and failed.

Following a massive battle at the end of I Am Number Four that proved that the Mogadorians have found him at last, John joined forces with Number Six. Now the fate of Lorien—and Earth— rests in the hands of these two teens. Already John and Six have inspired a fellow Lorien—Marina, Number Seven—who has been hiding in Spain. She’s been following the news of what’s happening in the US, and she’s certain it’s the sign she’s been waiting for.

‘Killer Elite’ Movie Trailer Starring Jason Statham

Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Rober De Niro… I’m intrigued by Killer Elite just from reading that partial cast list. And I love the film’s simple, to-the-point tagline: “When the hunter becomes the hunted, may the best man win.”

Here’s the scoop on the plot (which is based on a true story):

Killer Elite races across the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East in the action-packed account of an ex-special ops agent (Jason Statham) who is lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor (Robert De Niro). To make the rescue, he must complete a near-impossible mission of killing three tough-as-nails assassins with a cunning leader (Clive Owen).

Killer Elite will hit theaters on September 23, 2011.
