She may not have made it to the end of the 2011 season of American Idol, but one of the best performers of the season – Pia Toscano – hasn’t let that deter her from pursuing a singing career. Toscano has just signed on with 19 Recordings/Interscope Records and will be releasing her first single, “This Time,” digitally on July 12, 2011.

Toscano will also be part of the American Idols Live! Tour which begins on July 6th in Salt Lake City, Utah and ends in Rochester, New York on September 10th.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Interscope and 19 Recordings family,” Toscano stated. “Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine was an amazing mentor during my time on Idol and I’m looking forward to working with him and everyone at Interscope Records and 19 Recordings. This is a dream come true.”

Toscano’s single “This Time” was written and co-produced by Esther Dean. According to the press release, “the acoustic guitar and beat-driven track is just a taste of what’s to come when the Queens, NY, native releases her debut album, which she is currently working on, later this year.”

Toscano’s elimination was a real shocker, even for judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler. Tyler said of the voting public’s decision: “They’re wrong. I don’t know what happened with this. She’s beautiful. When she sings, she’s a bird.”

Even celebrity fans sounded off on her early elimination. “I think she was probably the best pure singer on the show, and she’s got all the makings of what it means to be a star in my opinion, so I was just irked [when she was voted off],” said Ashton Kutcher on host Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, “On the Air with Ryan Seacrest.”

James Spader Will Return to ‘The Office’

James Spader (Boston Legal) turned in a memorable performance in the season 7 finale of The Office, and apparently his work impressed the studio and audiences enough that he was invited back. Spader will be a series regular on season eight of the American version of The Office, but he won’t be taking over as the boss of the Dunder Mifflin office (the role previously played by Steve Carell).

Instead, James Spader will be playing CEO Robert California of Sabre, the parent company of Dunder Mifflin. That means Kathy Bates is out, Spader is in, which makes sense as she’s busy with her own series – Harry’s Law.

“James will reprise his role as Robert California, this uber-salesman that has a power to convince and manipulate, like a high-class weirdo Jedi warrior,” stated Paul Lieberstein, one of the series’ executive producers and a series regular, in the official press release. “He’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager but, within hours, got himself promoted. Within days, he took over the company. James has an energy that is completely his own, and ‘The Office’ has no tools for dealing with this guy. We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.”

Spader won three Emmys for his role as Alan Shore on The Practice and Boston Legal. He’s the only actor to win consecutive Emmys for playing the same character on two different series, according to NBC.

Showtime to Air Kings of Leon Documentary

Showtime just announced they’ve picked up the documentary Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon chronicling the lives of Kings of Leon band members Caleb, Nathan, Jared, and Matthew Followill. The network will debut the documentary on Sunday, August 21.

The band first got together in the late ’90s and, on an interesting side note, each member uses their middle name rather than their first name. The band’s best known for the singles “Sex on Fire,” “Use Somebody,” and “Notion.”

The official synopsis: “When three teenage brothers and their cousin rebelled against their strict, religious Southern upbringing to form a rock band named Kings of Leon, their humble back story garnered almost as much attention as their music. Many questioned if they were really related and if rumors of their father being a Pentecostal preacher were true. Since then, the band has achieved worldwide Grammy Award-winning success, and now, the mystery and myths behind these budding rock legends will be laid to rest in the documentary Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon.

The documentary kicks off at the annual Followill family reunion in the back woods of Talihina, Oklahoma, where the boys return to their roots and unwind with their family. First-time director and Followill friend Stephen C. Mitchell weaves personal home videos, unedited interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the band’s journey from their small-town beginnings — spent in poverty and touring the Bible Belt with their father, a Pentecostal evangelist minister, and their devout mother — to living the rock star dream.”

Eminem just set a new record with his Recovery album, the first album to sell 1 million digital copies in the U.S. Released in 2010, Recovery broke the record this week.

This record-setting career milestone comes just one week after the superstar artist landed at No. 1 with Hell: The Sequel, the release from Bad Meets Evil, Eminem’s collaboration with fellow Detroit native Royce Da 5’9. This marks the first time in the last five years an artist has scored two No. 1 albums within a 12-month period.

Recovery selling one million digital albums is an incredible achievement by an incredible artist,” says Interscope Records’ Vice Chairman Steve Berman. “I have had the pleasure of working with Eminem throughout the course of his career, and I’m delighted to be a part of yet another milestone on his amazing journey.”

“We are thrilled to congratulate Eminem on the history-making digital sales success of Recovery,” says Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg. “Over the years we’ve made a concerted effort to engage Em’s online fan base so this achievement is especially rewarding. Eminem made an amazing album with Recovery and the fans responded in record numbers.”

Recovery debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart (Eminem’s sixth album to do so), as well on as the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap Albums charts, marking the beginning of a triumphant comeback for the artist. The best-selling album of 2010 in the U.S. and the best-selling digital album of all-time, Recovery has now sold more than 5.7 million copies worldwide, propelled by its No. 1 singles “Not Afraid” (which earned Eminem a Grammy Award for “Best Rap Solo Performance” and two MTV Video Music Awards, and has sold more than 3.4 million downloads in the U.S.) and “Love The Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna, which spent seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has sold more than five million downloads in the U.S. and 9.3 million downloads worldwide.

“Love The Way You Lie” earned five Grammy Award nominations, including “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year,” and won Billboard Music, Soul Train, and People’s Choice awards.

In other Eminem news, Bad Meets Evil has released a new single from Hell: The Sequel, “Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars, which follows on the debut single “Fast Lane.” The video for “Fast Lane” has racked up more than 8.2 million views on VEVO.
