Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, in Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea. The official trailer for the inspirational drama shows a determined Trudy ready to face the elements (and jellyfish) despite the incredible danger.

“Daisy Ridley stars as the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905,” reads Disney’s synopsis. “Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.”
Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, and Jeff Nathanson serve as producers. Executive producers include Ridley, Rønning, and John G. Scotti.
Young Woman and the Sea will open in select theaters on May 31, 2024.

Disney+ has set a May 31, 2024 premiere date for Jim Henson Idea Man, a documentary directed by two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind). “If there was going to be a definitive documentary about Jim Henson, we had hoped it would be in the hands of an accomplished filmmaker. Ron Howard is both a creative and personality match for my father, unlike anyone else we could have contemplated,” stated Lisa Henson in an email to Vanity Fair.
“It was sort of anarchy on the outside, but underneath it, there was always a smart idea—a witty point to make, an observation about the world,” said Howard while discussing his impression of Jim Henson’s life with Vanity Fair. “To see that evolve through the medium of puppetry and television, and then on into movies, was so interesting to me. I felt like you could actually observe a lot about entertainment, what entertains us and why, through his journey.”
The documentary is produced by Imagine Documentaries, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Sara Bernstein, Margaret Bodde, Justin Wilkes, Mark Monroe, and Christopher St. John. Executive producers include Paul Crowder, Meredith Kaulfers, and Michael Rosenberg.
“Jim Henson Idea Man takes us into the mind of this singular creative visionary, from his early years puppeteering on local television to the worldwide success of Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and beyond,” reads Disney+’s synopsis. “Featuring unprecedented access to Jim’s personal archives, Howard brings us a fascinating and insightful look at a complex man whose boundless imagination inspired the world.”
A scene from ‘Sting’ (Photo Courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment)
From Arachnophobia to Itsy Bitsy, from Tarantula to Abyssal Spider, killer spider movies have always been in style. But there’s something special about the newest eight-legged offering, Sting. Sting is everything that’s amazing about creature features.
Sting is about a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne from the unfortunate Children of the Corn remake) who spends her time drawing comics and creeping into her neighbors’ apartments by crawling through the apartment building’s air ducts. One day while doing the latter, she comes across a cute little spider which she takes home and names Sting – not after the rock star or the wrestler, but after the short sword in The Hobbit. Yes, Charlotte is a dork.
But Sting isn’t a normal, run-of-the-mill spider. It’s an alien spider that crashed on Earth in a meteorite. First, Charlotte starts feeding Sting small things like cockroaches. But Sting starts growing (and growing and growing), and cockroaches don’t satisfy his voracious appetite for long.
Written and directed by Kiah Roche-Turner (who also did Wyrmwood: Apocalypse and Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead), Sting is a B-movie with A+ execution. It’s got the Roger Corman spirit with the Blumhouse slickness. Everything about it is laugh-out-loud fun. The little girl lead, the monstrous arachnid, the supporting cast of oddball characters, even the heavy-handedly foreshadowed final battle. It’s all a blast.
To his credit, Roche-Turner does throw some familial drama into the mix, with Charlotte’s mother and stepfather (played by Penelope Mitchell from Hemlock Grove and Ryan Corr from House of the Dragon, respectively) juggling the emotional needs of their pre-teen daughter with the priorities of their newborn son. This stepfamily dynamic gets a little awkward at times, but the situation itself is strained, so the awkwardness feels natural. And it does help build character so that when Sting starts wreaking havoc, the audience has something to care about.
The rest of the characters serve both as cannon fodder and comic relief. From the mean old aunt (Relic’s Robyn Nevin) whom viewers can’t wait to see die to the exterminator (Jermaine Fowler from The Blackening) who is as hilarious as he is heroic, from the upstairs neighbor biology student (Danny Kim from Born to Spy) who provides necessary technical exposition to Charlotte’s dementia-riddled grandmother (Candy’s Noni Hazlehurst) who has very little idea of what is happening, there’s no shortage of meat for the titular monster in Sting.
So now, let’s talk about Sting. This spider is a menace in the best possible way. Everything about Charlotte’s “adoption” of the creature has the viewer shaking their head. And that headshaking only gets more and more pronounced as the girl’s relationship with her new pet grows. It’s horror movie 101 – there has to be a bad decision somewhere. In Sting, that bad decision sets the whole movie in motion. So, we all have Charlotte to thank for our good time.
And it all leads up to a final battle that is part Alien and part It. But it’s all awesome. Sting is a bittersweet family drama in the clothing of a terrific monster movie. It’s heavy subject matter that’s given a hysterical treatment. More funny than scary, but Sting has still got all the chills that one can expect from a movie about a gigantic creepy-crawly.
There’s not much new in Sting, but that’s not the point of it. It does what it does well, and we’ve already established that killer spider movies will never go out of style. With a little luck, we’ll get a Sting sequel.

From Shondaland and new showrunner, Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly.
Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly.
Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope’s growing presence in the ton makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret.

The History Channel’s How Disney Built America dives into the history of the Disney brand and its impact on generations of fans. The six-episode nonfiction series is set to premiere on April 28, 2024 at 10pm ET/PT, with new episodes arriving on Sundays.
Produced by A+E Factual Studios group, the new addition to the network’s That Built franchise is executive produced by Sharon Scott, Steve Ascher, Matthew Pearl, Kristy Sabat, and Andy Seestedt. The History Channel’s Mary E. Donahue, Jim Pasquarella, and Alex Hicks also serve as executive producers.
The network released this lengthy description of the six-part series:
“How Disney Built America is a nostalgia-filled ride that paints a vivid picture of the world of Walt Disney and the history-making empire he and his brother Roy Disney built. Each hour-long episode focuses on a different example of game-changing brilliance in Disney’s history including creating the world’s most recognizable characters, establishing the animated features industry, revolutionizing the concept of merchandising, and using groundbreaking design and engineering to construct Disneyland, Walt Disney World® Resort, and beyond.
Viewers will hear from legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr, a direct hire from Walt who developed over 100 designs for Disney theme park attractions, to gain surprising insights into the unique innovations and struggles involved in realizing the dreams of a visionary. The series utilizes rarely-seen historical material, original dramatic recreations, and key interviews from Don Wildman, Margaret Kerrison, Douglas Brinkley, Mindy Johnson, and others to expand on how the brand is forever woven into the fabric of American life.
The April 28th series premiere recounts the creation of Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse – how he began as a pencil sketch and rocketed to lasting fame. The story starts with Walt in his early days in Hollywood when he loses creative control over his first successful cartoon character to a powerful middleman. What happens next is a series of pivotal decisions that spurs Walt, animator Ub Iwerks, and the staff at the Disney studio to create one of the most lucrative cartoon characters in history, along with the first synchronized sound animated short.
In the years to come, Mickey Mouse has many imitators who look to compete with his genuine appeal, but it’s difficult to surpass him as a true American symbol, and the foundation of an iconic media empire.”
