‘Civil War’ Review: Powerful and Thought-Provoking

Civil War Review

Alex Garland’s Civil War is a cautionary tale that’s frighteningly relevant and unsettling. It would be wonderful to live in a social and political climate in which the world shown in the film seems outlandish and impossible. But we don’t, and likely never will.

Garland’s brutal, in-your-face wake-up call is terrifying in both its visual depictions of combat and in its message. Civil War is also one of the best representations of the importance of journalism depicted in a fictional story.

The war is in its last weeks as the story picks up, with California and Texas’ Western Front alliance on the verge of entering Washington DC. As a Californian, this alliance was jarring when introduced in the film’s first trailers, given the states’ political leanings. However, Garland doesn’t address why the two most populated states have found common ground; it’s simply not an issue when taking in the bigger picture.

The Western Front (WF) isn’t the only group attempting to take down the three-term President. Florida leads another alliance, which operates separately from the WF. Other states have either chosen sides or are basically sitting out the war, and individual cities and towns are protecting their citizens with armed border guards and rooftop snipers. Major cities are still recognizable, for the most part, but the streets are empty and businesses are shuttered, eerily echoing the early days of the Covid-19 quarantine.

Reports out of the White House are sporadic and filled with lies, so it’s up to the few remaining journalists to act as impartial observers and provide the facts. Lee (Kirsten Dunst), a jaded war photographer who’s seen more than her fair share of battlefields, and reporter Joel Cullen (Wagner Moura) are determined to travel from New York to Washington DC, taking a circuitous route through areas that aren’t completely shut down or off-limits. Their objective: secure a final interview with the President (Nick Offerman) before Washington DC falls. It’s an incredibly dangerous mission, given that journalists are considered the enemy and shot on sight in DC.

Lee and Joel are joined by veteran New York Times reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) who’s anxious to get to the front line of the war which is currently 100 miles outside of DC in Charlottesville, Virginia. The fourth member of their ragtag group is Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), a bright-eyed young photographer who idolizes Lee and talks her way onto the team. Lee only reluctantly accepts Jessie’s presence. Lee sees herself in this fledgling photographer and doesn’t want the responsibility of keeping her safe. She also doesn’t have the energy or desire to serve as a mentor.

The 800-mile road trip to DC is incredibly perilous. Safe zones are few and far between, and there’s not much opportunity to let their guard down. Even simple pitstops for gas could lead to life-and-death situations, and idyllic-looking small towns may be home to militias that shoot on sight.

A burned-out helicopter rests in a boarded-up JCPenney’s parking lot. Bodies have been left hanging from overpasses. Smoldering buildings litter the landscape. The world’s gone completely, unimaginably mad. And still, these journalists forge on, knowing that what’s happening must be recorded. “Every time I survived a war zone, I thought I was sending a warning home: don’t do this. But here we are,” says Lee. They need to document the brutality and senselessness of this war as a warning. That the country has fallen into another civil war proves no one stops and listens.

Garland’s anti-war film is visually striking, with gritty, realistic combat scenes intermixed with more intimate scenes of the foursome traveling through empty towns and past forests transformed into fiery infernos. Shaky handheld camera work puts us directly into the line of fire. The thunderous sounds of gunfire seem to be ever present in the background, a constant reminder of lives being lost as a nation is ripped apart.

Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson are phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. Dunst portrays Lee as a world-weary war photographer who has lived through untold horrors and in response has built a wall between herself and the world. Spaeny’s young, aspiring photographer Jessie manages to put cracks in that wall by reminding Lee of her own wide-eyed younger years when she still believed her work could have a positive effect on the world. Lee shoots on film in black and white. Lee shoots digitally in color. But both aim for that perfect shot that tells a complete story and sparks conversations.

Unlike Lee, Moura’s Joel allows himself to enjoy the downtime between covering skirmishes. He’s a serious reporter focused on securing what could be the single most important (and historical) interview of his career. Joel’s desire to get to DC and interview the man who’s ordered air strikes against his US citizens and refuses to leave office is spurred on by a higher purpose. The President’s final words must be recorded for posterity’s sake.

Henderson’s Sammy is the grizzled reporter on the verge of retirement who aches for one last big get before getting out. Sammy’s the voice of reason in the group, and Henderson does a terrific job of playing him as a wise elderly mentor to all three of his traveling companions.

Civil War doesn’t spell out what caused the US to be ripped apart. Hints are dropped but Garland, like his heroic lead characters, attempts to tell the story from an unbiased observer’s point of view. In one particularly startling scene, a small-town soldier (Jesse Plemons) has taken it upon himself to decide who lives. His decision is based on the answer to one terrifying question: “What kind of American are you?” What’s the right answer when the entire nation has been turned on its head? It’s us versus them taken to the nth degree, with no agreed-upon definition of either “us” or “them.”

Seeing landmarks destroyed, towns wiped out, and Americans killing other Americans elicited a visceral reaction from me. And Garland’s R-rated drama is heartbreaking and infuriating. Heartbreaking in that some would love to see a version of what happens in the film happen in real life. Infuriating in that its depiction of journalists echoes the treatment they receive while performing crucial work.

Civil War is set in the near future. We can only hope it’s not proven to be prescient.

Series Description, Courtesy of Fox:

Alert: Missing Persons Unit is a procedural drama set in the Philadelphia Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit (MPU). Each episode features a heart-pounding, life-or-death search for a missing person headed by detectives Jason Grant and Nikki Batista. Together with the MPU team, their job is to find the missing or abducted and reunite them with their loved ones. Jason and Nikki, once married, have a very personal connection to these cases as their own young son went missing and was never found. The emotional toll of their son’s disappearance blew up their marriage, but even though they’ve moved on, their bond remains.

Nikki now runs MPU, where she and the team do for others what she wasn’t able to do for herself: bring a loved one back home. At MPU, she leads a highly skilled team, including her fiancé Mike Sherman, whom Nikki met when he was assigned to oversee the search for her son; Kemi Adebayo, a spiritually savvy detective with an astonishing knowledge base; and forensic anthropologist C (recurring guest star and newcomer Petey Gibson), who is a master at reconstructing the faces of those who have disappeared.

As the second season begins, the MPU team step into their new office in headquarters, where Jason and Nikki meet their new boss Inspector Hollis Braun (guest star Gil Bellows), who wants to keep a close eye on the team, particularly the unpredictable Jason Grant. Jason brings his old friend in to help with the case: master hacker Wayne Pascal, who he worked with in Afghanistan. Jason conveniently never told Nikki that Wayne was a woman (and a hot one!), which raises issues even as Nikki and Mike plan their wedding. Together, the team works to find the missing or abducted and help reunite them with their loved ones before it’s too late.

‘Chucky’ Season 3: Zackary Arthur Interview on Jake and Devon’s Relationship

Chucky Season 3 Zackary Arthur

Chucky took a hiatus during season three when the writers and actors went on strike last year. Only four new episodes aired in October, but after the strike ended Chucky finished the season and it’s back on April 9th. When we last left Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), Chucky had dropped a chandelier on the guests at a White House Halloween party. The audience also got to see that Chucky was aging, even in his doll form.

Arthur was at the NBC Universal party for the Television Critics Association in February. We got to catch up with him on Jake and Devon’s relationship and future battles with Chucky. Chucky airs Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT on both Syfy and USA.

How are Jake and Devon when we come back?

Zackary Arthur: “We’re secure and we’re developing as a couple.”

Is it fun to be playing a teen romance story amid all this crazy violence?

Zackary Arthur: “It’s a beautiful moment for the characters that despite all the craziness and all the shit that Chucky’s caused, we’re still trying to develop our lives and be with each other despite Chucky trying to ruin our lives.”

How old were you in season one?

Zackary Arthur: “I was 13/14.”

Has each season mirrored your childhood?

Zackary Arthur: “It’s strange because I’ve grown up about three, four years on the show. It’s great working on something that everyone is so passionate about, and it makes me so happy that I get to be part of something like that with my life and the time I’m putting into it.”

Do the human parts of the story reflect your growing up as well as Jake’s?

Zackary Arthur: “Yes, you can see elements of that in season two where Jake is being very remorseful and guilty over the death of his foster brother, Gary. These kids have gone through so much trauma. It affects them in so many ways. These kids are just trying to have a normal life.”

Chucky Season 3 Zackary Arthur

Where does episode five pick up in the White House and with the kids?

Zackary Arthur: “We pick up right after the chandelier has fallen. Pandemonium is ensuing and really the team has to regroup right now. The three amigos have to regroup. Now that we’ve seen this, we have the whole moment with the President and his son, there’s some mystical stuff going on so picking up right after that.

If you thought episode four was crazy, episode five was crazy. Then if you thought episode five was crazy, it just keeps getting better and better and better until it’s amazing what we’ve done, especially with episodes five through eight. The whole show but the way it builds is beautiful. That is thanks to Don and the writers, and the wonderful directors that we’ve had to work with.”

I did think they were crazy, and it keeps getting bigger.

Zackary Arthur: “It keeps getting better, so we all just have to watch.”

Is old Chucky more or less formidable than young Chucky?

Zackary Arthur: “Well, now that Chucky’s older, now he’s got maybe less to lose. He’s trying to take everybody out. We’ll see what his plan is for what he’s going to do. I guess he’s got less to lose.”

NCIS and The Neighborhood will both return for the 2024-2025 primetime season. CBS announced that NCIS has been renewed for season 22, while The Neighborhood has earned a seventh season order.

The Neighborhood and NCIS are the very best definition of a CBS comedy and drama,” stated Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, announcing the renewals. “They embody authentic storytelling with heart, humor, and family dynamics. We are proud to bring them back next season.”

The announcement comes hot on the heels of the network renewing the three FBI shows—FBI,FBI: Most Wanted, and FBI: International.

NCIS season 21 is ranked second among entertainment programs this season, with newcomer Tracker ranking first. The long-running drama starring Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Katrina Law, and Brian Dietzen has been averaging 12.9 million viewers, up 12% year-over-year. The franchise is airing its 1,000th episode on April 15, 2024.

NCIS follows the “sometimes complex and always amusing dynamics of a team forced to work together in high-stress situations.”

The Neighborhood with Cedric the Entertainer, Max Greenfield, Beth Behrs, and Tichina Arnold is pulling in 7.9 million viewers. Season six is currently airing on Mondays at 8pm ET/PT, followed by Bob Hearts Abishola.

CBS describes the half-hour comedy as “about what happens when the friendliest guy in the Midwest moves his family to a neighborhood in Los Angeles where not everyone looks like him or appreciates his extreme neighborliness.”

“I think Australian film and television has never been stronger. Now, with the addition of streaming networks and their reach, I’m so proud that our local productions and their hard work can be recognised not only here but around the world,” said Fimmel. “I’m excited to be a part of another season of Black Snow and showing off what Australians have to offer. That, and I’m happy to have free food and a job.”

In addition to McKinnon, new season two stars include Megan Smart (Class of ’07), Alana Mansour (Erotic Stories), Dan Spielman (Bad Behaviour), Victoria Haralabidou (Tourist), and Kat Stewart (Offspring). “We are thrilled to be working with Stan again and back in Queensland filming the second season of Black Snow. The audience response in Australia and around the world to series one was incredible and we can’t wait to bring this new story with this wonderful group of actors to the screen – including Travis Fimmel who is once again utterly compelling in the role of Cormack,” stated executive producer Rosemary Blight.

Director Sian Davies and Helena Brooks direct season two episodes.

Sundance Now offered this brief description of the new season: “In this second season, Detective Cormack tackles two separate missing persons cases. One is professional, as he investigates the disappearance of Zoe Jacobs (McKinnon), who disappeared from her own 21st birthday party in 2003. And the other is personal, as Cormack searches desperately for his own younger brother, who went missing when they were children.”
