‘Halo’ Drops an Official Season 2 Trailer and Poster

Paramount+’s two-minute official trailer for the sci-fi thriller Halo teases that when events spiral out of control, we save what we can. “Looking at your faces, I do not see defeat and I do not see surrender,” says Captain Jacob Keyes (Danny Sapani). Master Chief and the Spartans have heroes on their side, while the Covenant does not.

Pablo Schreiber (American Gods) returns to lead the video game-inspired series as Master Chief, Spartan-117, with Natascha McElhone (Californication) back as Dr. Halsey. Returning cast members include Jen Taylor (HALO game series, RWBY), Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), Shabana Azmi (Fire), Natasha Culzac (The Witcher), Olive Gray (Half Moon Investigations), and Yerin Ha (Reef Break). Also back for season two are Bentley Kalu (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Kate Kennedy (Catastrophe), Charlie Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Danny Sapani (Penny Dreadful), Fiona O’Shaughnessy (The Forgiven), and Tylan Bailey.

Halo newcomers include Joseph Morgan (The Originals), Cristina Rodlo (No One Gets Out of Here Alive), and Christina Bennington (Midsomer Murders).

Season two will premiere on February 8, 2024 with the release of the first two episodes. New episodes arrive on Thursdays.

“In season two, Master Chief John-117 leads his team of elite Spartans against the alien threat known as the Covenant. In the wake of a shocking event on a desolate planet, John cannot shake the feeling that his war is about to change and risks everything to prove what no one else will believe – that the Covenant is preparing to attack humanity’s greatest stronghold,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis. “With the galaxy on the brink, John embarks on a journey to find the key to humankind’s salvation, or its extinction: the Halo.”

David Wiener (Brave New World) guides the series as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Amblin Televisions’ Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey, and Xbox/343 Industries’ Kiki Wolfkill. Otto Bathurst and Toby Leslie for One Big Picture and Gian Paolo Varani also executive produce. Series stars Pablo Schreiber and Natascha McElhone serve as producers.

‘La Brea’ Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: “Sierra”

La Brea Season 3
Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi, Jon Seda as Dr. Sam, and Eoin Macken as Gavin in ‘La Brea’ season 3 episode 1 (Photo by: Mark Taylor/NBC)

Unfortunately, Gavin, Izzy, and Josh’s encounter with the T-Rex teased at the end of NBC’s La Brea season two isn’t the opening shot of season three episode one. Instead, the final season of the time-traveling sci-fi drama begins with Gavin (Eoin Macken) experiencing a pleasant memory before being snapped back into the reality of life in 10,0000 BC.

Gavin’s determined to get James’ laptop to work but isn’t having any luck. Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) is full of doom and gloom and won’t offer any help. The auroras are all closed, and there’s no way to get to Eve – even if they knew where/when she is right now, which they don’t.

Lucas (Josh McKenzie), who somehow got voted in as leader by the group, declares that security is their top priority. They have no idea what other creatures fell through the auroras (besides the aforementioned T-Rex), so they need to get busy building a spiked wall and a line of fire.

Judah (Damien Fotiou) still resents Lucas’ popularity and doesn’t want to waste time with a wall. (He has a point. A 3’ spiked wall means nothing to a T-Rex.) Lucas decides this impromptu security meeting is the perfect place to reveal that he and Veronica (Lily Santiago) are having a baby. Hugs and handshakes all around.

Gavin turns to Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) for help on the laptop, and wouldn’t you know it…Scott’s got the perfect solution for charging the battery: a potato. That, plus some wiring and good luck, should do the trick.

Scott fills Gavin (and the audience) in on what else he’s working on. He was supposed to have a job interview with Petra’s mom, Maya Schmidt, before tumbling into 10,000 BC. So, how did Maya, Petra, and the rest of that group end up on a military base in 10,000 BC? To make things even more confusing, Petra doesn’t know where the base is, where her mom is, or why her mom reached out to Scott in the first place.

Their chat’s disrupted by a roar and all the clearing people running toward them and away from the roar. Veronica pauses long enough to say the dinosaurs are in the clearing, which, of course, leads to Gavin heading toward the clearing. (The man is a master at bad decisions.)

Gavin runs up as two massive dinos are fighting and hides beside Izzy and Ty (Chike Okonkwo). The clearing is being destroyed as the creatures fight, and the trio makes a break for it while the beasties are distracted by trying to kill each other.

The bad news: A few of the clearing people were wounded escaping from the dinosaur invasion, but no one died. The even worse news: the clearing has been taken over by dinosaurs and is unusable. Their only supplies and food are what people grabbed before fleeing.

Gavin claims he needs to go back to the clearing to get the laptop, which is weird since he had the laptop with him – away from the clearing – while speaking with Scott just minutes ago. In fact, the scene showed him running to the clearing to check on Izzy without his laptop.

Anyway, Sam (Jon Seda) says whatever they need can wait at least a few days. It’s not safe to return to the clearing now. Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) joins them with news that Ty says everyone’s welcome to regroup at the fort. When Levi offers to find Josh and Riley, who are off on their own gathering berries, Gavin gets all jealous and claims he can find his own son, thank you very much.

La Brea Season 3

Sam, who should have been the group’s leader, puts Levi in charge of marching everyone to the fort while he and Gavin look for their kids. They also recruit Izzy, Lucas, and Veronica for the mission. Sam notices Lucas has blood on his face, and Lucas remembers he fell during the dinosaur attack.

Riley and Josh are declaring their love for each other and making out when a Velociraptor suddenly appears behind Josh.

Josh screams for help and comes running up with Riley in his arms. She’s been attacked and is unconscious and covered with blood.

They make it to the fort, and after Sam sews up his daughter, all that’s left to do is hope and pray that she survives. Sam remains by her side as Gavin assures Izzy and Josh that she’s stable – for now.

Levi hands Gavin the laptop and says he went back for it just so that Gavin has one less thing to worry about.

Meanwhile, Scott and Petra string together potatoes to power the laptop. Petra confesses that she’s worried the computer will signal the base and reveals that she and her mom escaped from there – they didn’t just leave. Her mom told Petra they were bad people but wouldn’t explain why.

Scott makes a promise he can’t keep and says nothing bad will happen. They hook up the potatoes to the laptop, and it springs to life. The key players arrive before it powers up, and when it does, the screen reads, “Quantum Pairing Initiated.” The connection works and some unknown person from who knows where types, “Hello?”

Gavin responds with, “Hello.” When it asks who he is, Gavin types his name. The unknown person says they can help Gavin find his wife. The person claims they can see her now and provides an accurate description.

“How do I get my wife back?” types Gavin, frantic.

“Find Sierra,” reads the reply. The connection terminates, and even Scott pounding on the keys can’t get it to reconnect.

Riley wakes up and wants to say a few things in case she dies. She knows she’s in horrible shape and has an infection. She believes she won’t last long but falls back unconscious before she tells her dad what she wants to say.

Gavin’s wandered off on his own, and Ty joins him, wondering if he recognizes the name Sierra. Gavin has a weird feeling the name is connected to a memory of a breakfast he had with his family. Ty gently suggests Gavin should talk to Levi about that memory since he was in it too and might remember something.

Scott rushes up with the news that he traced the signal, and its origin is within a few miles of the fort! Wow, talk about your good luck! Way to go, Scott.

La Brea Season 3

So, Scott, Levi, Gavin, Petra, and Ty head off to track the signal, with Scott leading the way. They don’t spot a radio tower or anything metal, and Ty suggests they split up. (Note: any horror movie fan will tell you to NEVER split up under any circumstances.)

At the same time all this is going down, Lucas passes out while trying to reassure Veronica everything will be just fine.

Gavin takes Ty’s advice and asks Levi about the breakfast they had with smiley face pancakes. Levi remembers it was Izzy’s birthday. He also recalls it was the year that Gavin started having visions and that Gavin went outside and then came back in all upset.

That prompts Gavin to remember a woman named Sierra was outside and tried to talk him into returning to the program. Gavin was furious that she came to his house after he claimed he was done with the program. Sierra revealed that her real name was Maya Schmidt – Petra’s mom.

Sierra was a military call sign for Maya, the woman he worked for, and now she’s also down here in 10,000 BC. Gavin and Levi react to this discovery by searching for Petra. Levi finds her first, but before they can talk, both are shot with tranquilizer darts and pass out.

Gavin, Scott, and Ty discover Petra’s locket, but Petra and Levi are missing. A helicopter flies overhead, and Scott assumes it’s from the base. Before Gavin rushes off all willy-nilly, Ty has something he needs to show him. He discovered an aurora that’s two different colors which means it goes to two different places. One might lead to Eve – but which one?

Sam, Josh, and Izzy walk up just seconds later with Riley on a stretcher. Sam claims Scott radioed them with the discovery, but Scott literally found out about it milliseconds ago and wouldn’t have had the time to make the call. Enough time also hasn’t passed for the trio to bring Riley from the fort. (Chalk this up to one of those convenient “laptop retrieval” moments that doesn’t make a lick of sense.)

Gavin informs the group that he remembered he used to work with Petra’s mother and that she’s the key to everything. Sam wants to take Riley through the aurora to save her, and Josh volunteers to go too. Gavin orders him to stay, so, of course, Josh goes through the aurora with Riley – and without Sam.

They’re debating what to do when Ty stands too close to the aurora and is sucked through. Josh and Riley go through the red side, and Ty is pulled through the blue. When Ty vanishes, so does the aurora.

Episode one of the final season ends with Ty almost being run over by a truck. It’s the middle of the night and the lights of LA shine in the distance. The man who almost hit him confirms it is September 12, 2021 – just a few weeks before the sinkhole opened up.

‘Fargo’ Season 5 Episode 9 Recap: “The Useless Hand”

Fargo Season 5 Episode 9
Juno Temple as Dorothy “Dot” Lyon in ‘Fargo’ season 5 (Photo CR: Michelle Faye/FX)

FX’s Fargo season five episode eight, the season’s penultimate episode, is one of the series’ finest hours of storytelling. It opens with Ole Munch (Sam Spruell) punishing Gator (Joe Keery) for his innumerable acts of cruelty, topped off by the murder of Ole’s elderly mother.

Gator tries to bribe Ole into letting him go, but Ole doesn’t care one iota about promises of women, weapons, or cash. Tied to a chair, Gator can only whimper and beg as he realizes Ole’s about to take a red-hot knife to his eyes. An eye for an eye, correct? “This for that,” says Ole, adding, “What is taken must be given.”

Over at the Tillman Ranch, Dot (Juno Temple) is back in the game after a brief moment of despair at the end of episode seven. She maneuvers the metal cot into position beneath an exposed nail and makes a grab for it. Roy (Jon Hamm) steps outside the big house, but he doesn’t hear when Dot takes a tumble and breaks one of the floorboards in the outbuilding.

Ranch foreman Bowman (Conrad Coates) reports that no one has heard from Gator, and Roy reveals the governor is ignoring his calls. They’re on their own at this point. The tide has turned and it’s time to rally the patriots. They need to bring weapons and be prepared for battle.

Roy also gives the order for Bowman to kill Dot.

Dot repeatedly stamps down on the board to make the opening larger. By the time Bowman walks in, it appears that Dot has somehow escaped.

Dot hides under the floorboards and uses a nail to unlock her handcuffs.

Meanwhile, Lorraine Lyon’s calls to Danish Graves are going unanswered. Indira (Richa Moorjani), now in a business suit and professional in manner, delivers the news that his cell has been off for hours. The cell’s last known location was at the Tillman Ranch.

Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is done playing her twisted version of nice. She orders Jerome to call the “orange idiot” since her donations mean she’s owed a favor.

Indira calls her friend North Dakota Deputy Witt Farr (Lamorne Morris) to inform him the FBI is about to raid the Tillman Ranch. Indira can’t be there in person, given her new position, but she trusts that Witt will save Dorothy if she’s still alive.

Witt immediately leaps into action and heads to the Tillman Ranch.

Roy shoots a video calling for all patriots to respond to his ranch. “This is America’s Sheriff issuing a call to arms,” says Roy. He echoes a certain politician and says that after the government comes for him, they’ll come for all the patriots next.

The next scene is of truckloads of well-armed “patriots” arriving at the ranch to the tune of “Y.M.C.A.”

The arrivals provide a bit of a distraction, enough for Dot to make it into the main house unnoticed. She heads upstairs to her old bedroom and manages to use the landline to call Wayne (David Rysdahl) and Scotty (Sienna King). Roy’s third wife, Karen Rebecca Liddiard), interrupts the call before Dot can say anything other than that she’s okay.

Karen holds Dot at gunpoint as she snarls that Roy won’t even let her change the sheets. They still sleep in Dot’s “filth.” Plus, Dot’s photos are still all over the walls.

Dot pleads with Karen to help her end this. Together, they can take down Roy and make it so he’ll never hit another woman. Karen decides that’s a big no, and Dot easily disarms her and hits her with the butt of the rifle. She leaves Karen knocked out on the bedroom floor, keeps the rifle, takes Karen’s cell phone, and uses a hidden stairway down to the first floor.

Dot turns all the gas on and tucks her hair up under a hat before exiting the house.

Roy returns to the big house and sniffs the air just as he hears a man about to light a cigarette. Unfortunately, he acts quickly and the house doesn’t go up in flames. They search the house, and Roy spots Karen unconscious and injured but doesn’t help her. He’s obsessed with finding Dot.

While searching the house, Roy finds the bag of cash Gator was supposed to have given Ole Munch. He realizes his son stole it back.

And speaking of said son, Ole’s leading him on foot through the snow, hands tied and rope around his neck.

Dot finds an out-of-the-way spot and uses Karen’s cell phone to call Indira. Lorraine demands the phone, and Dot is sad to report that Roy killed Danish when he came to the ranch to save her. Dot claims to be safe right now, and Lorraine explains state and federal forces are on their way. She tells Dot to find somewhere safe to ride out the battle.

Dot’s confused as to why Lorraine would help her now, and Lorraine’s forced to admit she cares. “No daughter of mine is going down on the one-yard line,” says Lorraine. She orders her daughter-in-law to put her big girl panties on and stay in the fight.

Indira takes over and tells her to stay out of the fight and to hide somewhere they won’t look. Dot knows the perfect place: the hidden grave by the windmill.

Fargo Season 5 Episode 9
Jon Hamm as Roy Tillman in ‘Fargo’ season 5 episode 9 (Photo CR: Michelle Faye/FX)

A North Dakota SWAT team and heavily armed FBI agents pull up in dozens of vehicles – including tanks – right outside the ranch’s main gate.

Roy’s gathered 40+ weekend warriors as the FBI Special Agent-in-Charge exchanges banter with the SWAT team leader. The SWAT guy describes Roy Tillman as a famous Gary Cooper-type sheriff, and the FBI SAIC confirms they’ll try not to injure the women and children.

Agents Joaquin and Meyer join the leaders and explain that it’s their case. They describe Roy’s people as ready for another 1776 and believe they won’t back down without a fight. Witt walks up with news that the hostage, Dot, has a cell phone with her and they can use it to track her location. Neither the Special Agent in Charge nor the SWAT team leader were aware that there’s a hostage, but the SWAT team will put her on their list of things to do. Agent Meyer speaks up and says Dot’s critical to their case, and the SWAT leader agrees to move saving Dot to the top of his list.

The SWAT leader also agrees to let Witt coordinate a rescue plan with tactical.

Roy rides out on his horse and orders the officers to get off his land. Of course, the SAIC doesn’t back down and isn’t intimated by Roy’s threats or his ragtag, wannabe army. Roy claims not to know who Danish Graves is and refuses to say if Dot/Nadine is on his property.

Witt speaks up, and Roy isn’t shocked that he’s joined the witch hunt. Agent Meyer points out that the true definition of a witch hunt isn’t witches hunting men. It’s men killing women to keep them in line. Roy doesn’t take kindly to a woman speaking to him this way and warns her there are patriots ready to penetrate her from behind.

The SAIC is done with this standoff. Roy needs to let them in, or else he’ll wind up in handcuffs. Roy seems to believe God has set him on this path and that everyone else is wrong. They can leave and live or stay and die. (Yeah, I don’t think this is going to end how Roy thinks it will.)

Roy and his foreman discuss their next move, and Roy figures out the FBI got there too fast to have just responded to Dot’s call. He knows Lorraine’s behind this and that she made a call to “weaponize the deep state.”

Roy believes Dot is still on the property and that she’s hiding in either the dugout or the grave. Roy checks out the dugout – a secret tunnel system that goes under the ranch and out into a field. She’s not there, but he hides a knife just in case he needs to return.

Roy exits the tunnel only to discover Gator and Ole Munch appearing through the mist 20’ away. Ole confirms Gator had to forfeit his eyes after pulling a double-cross. Gator sobs and apologizes to his dad for not letting it go like he told him to.

Ole calls Gator a useless hand and pushes him into Roy, causing both men to fall down. By the time Roy looks up again, Ole’s disappeared back into the mist. Roy has no sympathy for Gator and tells him, “If there ever was a point to you, it’s gone now.”

Roy walks away, leaving the now-blind and injured Gator on his own.

Witt informs the SWAT team that Dot will likely be armed, but whatever they do, they should not shoot her. “This story will not end with us crushing the victim with a helping hand,” declares Witt.

The SWAT team agrees not to shoot the hostage.

Dot is, in fact, hiding in the grave next to Danish’s body. Unfortunately, she left the rifle behind when she climbed down into the pit. Foreman Bowman and two men are charged with checking out the grave and spot the discarded rifle. The grave’s lid is removed and Dot is exposed. Bowman takes aim and as visions of Wayne and Scott flow their Dot’s mind, the foreman is yanked away from behind.

Ole Munch appears at the top of the pit and assures Dot that she’s free to come out. He offers Dot his hand, saying it wouldn’t be fair to fight a tiger in a cage. Once out of the pit, Ole hands her a rifle and says, “Now the tiger is free.”

Dot doesn’t reply and watches as Ole Munch walks off into the mist.

Episode nine ends with Dot walking with determination toward the big house.

Netflix announced filming is officially underway on the fifth – and final – season of the critically acclaimed, award-winning drama Stranger Things. The streaming service released the first photo from behind the scenes on the much-anticipated (and much-delayed) season five.

The cast of the final season includes Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, Joe Keery, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Finn Wolfhard. Sadie Sink, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Cara Buona, Charlie Heaton, Maya Hawke, and Natalia Dyer also star.

Amybeth McNulty, Brett Gelman, Jamie Campbell Bower, Priah Ferguson, and Linda Hamilton are also a part of the show’s huge ensemble.

“A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana. After a boy vanishes into thin air, his close-knit group of friends and family search for answers and are pulled into a high-stakes and deadly series of events,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Beneath the surface of their ordinary town lurks an extraordinary supernatural mystery, along with top-secret government experiments and a dangerous gateway that connects our world to a powerful yet sinister realm. Friendships will be tested and lives will be altered as what they discover will change Hawkins and possibly the world — forever.”

Ross and Matt Duffer created the popular series, which debuted way back in July 2016. Season two premiered in October 2017, followed by season three in July 2019 and season four in May 2022. Season five is expected to arrive in 2025.

Although the series is ending, the Stranger Things universe will continue with a spinoff and Stranger Things: The First Shadow stage play.

Golden Globes 2024 Winners: ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Succession’ Win Big

Barbie went into the 2024 Golden Globes with the most film nominations, but it was Oppenheimer that captured the most wins. Oppenheimer picked up five trophies, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Score, Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Cillian Murphy), and Supporting Actor – Drama (Robert Downey Jr).

Barbie took home the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award as well as Best Song (Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”). Other films receiving two awards included Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Poor Things.

Lily Gladstone won the Female Actor – Drama award for her outstanding performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese. Gladstone’s win is the first for an Indigenous performer.

The final season of Succession topped the list of winners on the television side, collecting four, including Best Television Series – Drama and three acting awards for Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Macfadyen. Beef scored three wins, including a groundbreaking win in the Female in a Limited Series categories. Ali Wong entered the Golden Globes history books as the first female actor of Asian descent to win in that category.

The Bear topped the list of TV comedies, earning three Golden Globes including Male Actor – Comedy (Jeremy Allen White), Female Actor – Comedy (Ayo Edebiri), and Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Jo Koy hosted the broadcast with only two weeks to prepare. Koy’s monologue didn’t hit any of the right notes, and he repeatedly made sure everyone knew that he didn’t have much time to get ready for the hosting gig. Koy also tossed the show’s writers under the bus by claiming the only funny jokes were the ones he wrote for himself.

The threesome board the project which already has Danny Pino (Mayans M.C.), Michael Chiklis (The Shield), Mark Feuerstein (Power), and Yul Vazquez (Severance) involved as series regulars.

Chris Brancato (Godfather of Harlem, Narcos) created the series and serves as executive producer and showrunner. Additional executive producers include Michael Panes, Alfredo Barrios Jr., and Guillermo Navarro, with Navarro directing the pilot.

Hotel Cocaine is set in the 1970s and will be shot in the Dominican Republic. The eight-episode season is expected to premiere this summer.

The streaming service also announced Mayra Hermosillo, Juan Pablo Raba, Erniel Baez, Nick Barkla, Cale Ambrozic, Camila Valero, Maggie Lacey, John Ventimiglia, and Larry Powell have joined the cast in recurring and guest-starring roles.

MGM+ released this description of the series and characters:

Hotel Cocaine is the story of Roman Compte, Cuban exile and general manager of the the Mutiny Hotel, the glamorous epicenter of the Miami cocaine scene of late ‘70s and early ‘80s. The Mutiny Hotel was Casablanca on cocaine; a glitzy nightclub, restaurant, and hotel frequented by Florida businessmen and politicians, international narcos, CIA and FBI agents, models, sports stars, and musicians. At the center of it all was Compte, who was doing his best to keep it all going and fulfill his own American Dream.”

  • Camila Valero as Alejandra, Nestor’s fourth wife.
  • Maggie Lacey as Constance, the uptight sister of Burton Greenberg.

Sundance Adds ‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ and Announces Beyond Film Lineup

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival has added The Greatest Night in Pop, a documentary that explores the creation of the collaborative “We Are the World” song and video, to its lineup.

“We’re thrilled to be adding to our program a special screening of The Greatest Night in Pop, taking us behind the scenes of how ‘We Are the World’ came together, followed by a conversation with Lionel Richie, filmmaker Bao Nguyen, and producer Julia Nottingham,” stated Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival Director of Programming. “Our robust film lineup will be rounded out by a wide range of conversations touching upon themes in the programming and featuring some of today’s most inspiring creators and leaders.”

The festival also announced the 2024 Beyond Film schedule, which will feature conversations with filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, writer/director Dee Rees, and many more.

“Our Beyond Film programming is a crucial and inspiring part of the Sundance Film Festival experience,” said Ania Trzebiatowska, Beyond Film Program Curator. “Especially this year, as we celebrate our 40th edition, these events enable audiences to go beyond the screens — whether you’re watching in theaters here in person, or online from home — to meaningfully connect with artists and their stories. It’s during these intimate conversations that audiences can discover themes across our Festival Program and hear from artists themselves about the vitality of independent storytelling, the interwovenness of art, science, and culture, and so much more.”

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival runs January 18-28 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah.

THE BIG CONVERSATION
The Big Conversation tackles science, art, culture, and the movements that are fueling the imaginations of today’s independent artists. A compelling selection of speakers discuss topics centered on the themes of this year’s program and explore broader trends in art and culture around the world. In considering how artists — through their practice and their work — make meaning of the world, we’re reminded that it’s the big conversation that connects us to the big ideas.

The Big Conversation: Screen of Consciousness
Monday, January 22, 11 a.m.–noon
Filmmaker Lodge, 550 Main St.
Amid a groundswell of public fascination with AI, our guest filmmakers and scientists consider the science and technology of machine learning and the range of imaginative, dystopian, and sometimes prophetic narratives that storytellers have put forth in exploring it. For all of cinema’s android apocalypse scenarios, films like Her, After Yang, Moon, Marjorie Prime, and this year’s Love Me offer artful, philosophical perspectives on AI (as a technology, a tool, a companion), the emotional connection humans build with it, and the complexities of sentience and consciousness. Supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Featuring: Andy Zuchero (Love Me) and Sam Zuchero (Love Me) and others. Moderated by Dr. Heather Berlin (Associate Clinical Professor, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai)

The Big Conversation: First Steps, First Films
Wednesday, January 24, 2–3 p.m.
Filmmaker Lodge, 550 Main St.
In a session geared toward emerging artists, we explore career-building and forging a creative identity. Although the landscape of independent storytelling continues to evolve dramatically and the nature of opportunity shifts, the path to starting a career, getting a first project off the ground, forming meaningful collaborations, and finding a personal storytelling voice has never been easy to navigate. A small group of remarkable filmmakers discuss how they’ve done just that.
Featuring: Carlos López Estrada (Dìdi (弟弟)) and others

Sunday, January 21, 2–3:30 p.m.
Filmmaker Lodge, 550 Main St.
Technology is simply and fundamentally a human expression formed by the values held by its designer. New Frontier alumni artists and creative technologists who have been working on the vanguard of design and technology for decades come together to interrogate the profile of so-called AI technologies in popular culture, share their creative practice, and ask, “What do we need this powerful tech to do for us right now?” Do we need to rebrand artificial intelligence altogether?

Featuring: Navid Khonsari (Block Party, Hero, Revolution 1979), Ari Melenciano (Computational Anthropology), Rashaad Newsome (Being (the Digital Griot)), Sandra Rodriguez (CHOM5KY vs. CHOMSKY). Moderated by Amelia Winger-Bearskin (Banks Chair of AI and the Arts at the University of Florida, Digital Worlds Institute, New Frontier Story Lab, and IDP alumna)

CBS Announces ‘NCIS: Origins’ with Mark Harmon Narrating

Mark Harmon is returning to the NCIS franchise as narrator and executive producer of NCIS: Origins. CBS has given the show, which will explore Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ younger years, a straight-to-series order.

NCIS fans can expect the origin story to premiere as part of the 2024-2025 primetime season.

“The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in watching my father craft the role and previously having the honor to play young Gibbs myself,” stated executive producer Sean Harmon. “I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into a producing role alongside Gina, David, and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character.”

In addition to Mark and Sean Harmon, the behind-the-scenes team will include David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal as executive producers, writers, and co-showrunners. North currently handles co-showrunner and executive producer duties on NCIS.

CBS offered this description of the newest addition to the NCIS franchise:

NCIS: Origins begins in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS and follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, narrated by Mark Harmon. In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.”

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this new chapter to life along with Mark and Sean Harmon,” said executive producers and co-showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North. “This really is the making of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And even the most dedicated NCIS fans will discover that they don’t know the whole story.”

Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, said, “We are elated and honored to continue the expansion of the NCIS universe in such a unique and unexpected way. Viewers can look forward to Mark Harmon returning to CBS to narrate the complex and mysterious backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in NCIS: Origins, which will build on the rich legacy of this character while reintroducing fan-favorite characters and meeting new ones.”
