‘Night Swim’ Featurette with the Cast and Director Bryce McGuire

Bryce McGuire, writer and director of the Universal Pictures horror film, shared in a new featurette that his aim with Night Swim was to ruin swimming pools forever. Actor Wyatt Russell, on the other hand, believes that the movie might make viewers at least think twice before taking a plunge.

The 2024 horror film is based on a short film by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst. In addition to Wyatt Russell (currently seen playing a younger version of his dad Kurt’s character in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Night Swim stars Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and Gavin Warren (Fear the Walking Dead).

James Wan and Jason Blum serve as producers, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ryan Turek executive producing. Night Swim opens in theaters on January 5, 2024.

Night Swim Synopsis, Courtesy of Universal Pictures:

No running. No diving. No lifeguard on duty. No swimming after dark.

The film stars Wyatt Russell as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Condon), teenage daughter Izzy (Hoeferle) and young son Elliot (Warren).

Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.

‘Death in the Dorms’ Season 2 Coming in 2024

Death in the Dorms
ABC News Studios’ ‘Death in the Dorms’ returns for season 2

Season two of ABC News Studios’ true crime drama Death in the Dorms will return for season two on Thursday, February 22, 2024. ABC News Studios also announced two brand new docuseries – Daughters of the Cult and Me, Hereafter – will stream on Hulu next year.

Season one of Death in the Dorms premiered on January 5, 2023 and included investigations of Western Kentucky University, University of South Carolina, University of Florida, and UCLA. ABC News Studios’ Carrie Cook executive produces along with Myles Reiff, Yes, Like The River’s Nile Cappello, and The Intellectual Property Corporation’s Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman. ABC News Studios’ David Sloan is a senior executive producer.

Death in the Dorms follows six chilling stories of college students from different schools whose lives were tragically cut short by violent crime: Jackson State University accounting major Latasha Norman, Louisiana State University first-year student Max Gruver, University of Miami linebacker Marlin Barnes and his friend Timwanika Lumpkins, Temple University film studies student Jenna Burleigh, Binghamton University nursing student Haley Anderson, and College of Charleston student Patrick Moffly,” reads ABC News Studios’ synopsis. “Through emotional testimony from family and friends and interviews with key law enforcement, each episode focuses on the life of a bright young student and their lost potential, their loved ones’ grief, and the fight to bring their killers to justice.”

Daughters of the Cult debuts on Thursday, January 4, 2024 and is directed by Sara Mast. Mast also executive produces along with Emily Bon, Jimmy Fox, Jacob Cohen-Holmes, and Beth Hoppe. ABC News Studios’ David Sloan is the senior executive producer.

ABC News Studios offers this description of the new true-crime docuseries: “Daughters of the Cult is a shocking, five-episode deep-dive into the history of a splinter group of Mormon fundamentalist cult members who perpetrate a deadly wave of violence and abuse for decades in the name of their fanatical prophet, Ervil LeBaron. Dubbed the ‘Mormon Manson,’ LeBaron and his followers were hidden in plain sight throughout the Southwest and Mexico. Now, past members of the infamous cult tell the true story behind the string of murderous crimes.

Daughters of the Cult features interviews with surviving ex-members, including multiple children of LeBaron, who speak about their experience being raised under their father’s rule. Fresh insight comes from relatives and law enforcement who worked on the murder cases, painting an emotional and grisly picture of a brutal madman ordering cold-blooded executions. Despite running from the FBI for most of their young lives, there is triumph and healing for the brave few men and women who escaped and began anew.”

Premiering on Thursday, February 29, 2024, Me, Hereafter is executive produced by Committee Films’ Andy Awes and Maria Awes. ABC News Studios’ David Sloan is the senior executive producer, and Eamon McNiff is senior producer.

Me, Hereafter, a genre-bending, four-episode docu-drama, takes viewers inside gripping murder investigations like never before as if the dead have a voice from the beyond. This new series pushes the boundaries of true crime, combining never-before-seen investigative footage, interrogation videos, dramatic sequences, and poignant interviews with the victims’ loved ones and key authorities who worked on the cases,” reads the synopsis. “In each of the four episodes, voice actors unspool the narrative from the perspective of the deceased victim as they lead the audience through the investigation, where clues, alibis, and motives keep viewers guessing.

Cases include the mysterious disappearance of a young pregnant woman mere feet from her family’s apartment; the seemingly random and senseless murder of a successful real estate agent and mother of two; the frantic search for a woman feared lost in a blizzard, and her sister’s determined quest for the truth; and the beloved funeral director and his intern shot and killed inside their funeral home, and the shocking suspect police say was the killer.”

‘No Good Deed’ Comedy Adds Linda Cardellini

No Good Deed

Linda Cardellini will be reuniting with Dead to Me creator and executive producer Liz Feldman for Netflix’s No Good Deed, a dark comedy starring Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow. The streaming service also announced Luke Wilson (Fingernails), Teyonah Parris (The Marvels), Abbi Jacobson (A League of Their Own), and Poppy Liu (Dead Ringers) have signed to the series.

Feldman is the eight-episode first-season showrunner and executive produces with Christie Smith, Silver Tree, and Gloria Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum. Silver Tree is directing multiple episodes, including the pilot.

Netflix offered this description of the series and characters:

No Good Deed is a half-hour, dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish-style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.”

  • Linda Cardellini plays “Margo Starling” – A perfectly-coiffed status seeker with buried secrets to spare, Margo knows how to get what she wants – and what she wants is the in-demand Morgan house so she can flip it for profit with her lover, a high-end developer.
  • Luke Wilson plays “JD Campbell” — A depressed, out-of-work soap opera star desperate to land his next job, JD is looking to downsize from his modern McMansion while still maintaining both his lavish lifestyle and his marriage to a demanding wife.
  • Teyonah Parris plays “Carla” – A high-achieving and somewhat sardonic architect and expectant mother, Carla and new husband Dennis are on the hunt for the perfect home for their expanding family. She falls hard for the Morgan house but the impending financial stress reveals some cracks in her new marriage.
  • Abbi Jacobson plays “Leslie Fisher” – Clever, curious and competitive to a fault, Leslie is thrilled to discover that the Los Feliz home she and her wife have admired from afar has finally come on the market.
  • Poppy Liu plays “Sarah” — Soulful, grounded and uncompromisingly decent, Sarah often serves as a much-needed moral compass to wife Leslie (Abbi Jacobson) — though she’s not without some secrets of her own. She’s intrigued when the Morgan house comes on the market but has some deep reservations.

‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ Episode 8 Recap: Bass Hunts for Mr. Sundown

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves season one comes to an end with episode eight, an episode that opens with Bass (David Oyelowo), Billy (Forrest Goodluck), and Sherrill Lynn (Dennis Quaid) kidnapping an associate of Esau Pierce (aka Mr. Sundown) in Fort Worth, Texas. They take him to a deserted house outside of town, but even after being tortured by Sherrill, the associate refuses to give up Esau’s location.

Bass takes over the questioning and exits the house minutes later, declaring they’re heading to Glen Rose. Sherrill doesn’t believe taking the man’s boots is harsh enough punishment. Bass, however, thinks walking for miles will probably lead to his death.

Sherrill goes against Bass’s orders and kills the man.

Even hours later in the dark of night, Bass and Sherrill are still arguing over Sherrill killing the man. Sherrill suggests that Bass needs to wrap his head around the idea that they’re currently waltzing with the devil.

Sherrill can’t stop flapping his lips and insults Billy, calling him a little red boy and speaking ill of his mom. Billy’s had enough of Sherrill and is ready to kill him, and Sherrill suggests that he go for it. Bass ends the standoff with a single bullet fired into the air.

The following day, Bass arrives at Ranger Esau Pierce’s estate and is forced to leave his guns at the gate before meeting with Esau. On the ride to the house, Bass sees slaves toiling in the field, with armed men watching over them.

Bass informs Esau he’s there to collect the $50 difference between a payday for a pair of boots and a live prisoner. Esau welcomes him in, and Bass comes face to face with a massive dinosaur skull. Bass points out that this mansion’s awfully expensive for a man on a Texas Rangers salary.

Esau’s safe is loaded with cash, and he claims he’s a successful cattle rancher on the side. He hands Bass $100 and reveals he purchased the land from a mining company that never hit it rich. Bass shuts down the small talk and mentions Mr. Sundown.

Jennie Lauren E. Banks) and the kids, except for Sally, listen to Esme (Joaquina Kalukango) speak at church. Afterward, Deputy Rogers (Justin Hurtt-Dunkley) and Esme flirt, and Rogers asks to walk her home. Esme accepts.

Jennie’s driving the wagon home when they come across a white man sitting alone in a wagon. As they approach the front of their home, Jennie’s shocked to see George Reeves’ wife, Rachel (David Oyelowo’s wife, Jessica), sitting on the porch next to Sally. Jennie has a flashback to her time as a slave at the Reeves’ plantation and of being forced by Rachel to return to work the day after she gave birth to Sally.

Jennie doesn’t want to entertain Rachel, but the woman won’t leave. Rachel insists that her husband’s helping to pass new laws, and that soon the Reeves will be turned out of their own home. She’s willing to take Jennie’s children back as slaves, and Jennie can’t control herself and slaps her face, calling her a wretched woman.

Jennie takes off and pays a visit to Esme, revealing she’s now ready to follow Esme’s lead. She believes if they don’t fight back, the laws will be changed and slavery will return.

Esau serves Bass a delicious steak for dinner and notes that it’s warm inside his house. He opens a window that looks out onto Bass’s former (and presumed dead) prisoner, Jackson “Jackrabbit” Cole (Tosin Mordhunfola), tied up and in pain. Bass won’t be drawn into Esau’s game, and Esau admits he admires everything about him. Bass claims he’s only interested in learning how Esau earns his money because he wants to get in on his grift.

“No king can build a kingdom alone,” says Bass.

Esau insists he doesn’t care about race; he views prisoners as animals. He arrests all thieves and killers, but Black bodies are worth more alive and sold than the reward for bringing them in to hang. He doesn’t mind that the myth of Mr. Sundown is flourishing.

The Black men working his fields are all wanted men assumed to be dead. Their labor allows his cattle farm to flourish. Esau believes being alive and working for him is better than swinging in a noose.

Bass is led to Esau’s barn and sees the wolf Esau had tied to the wagon when he dropped off Jackson is still in Esau’s possession. It’s starving and aggressive, and Esau instructs Bass to toss it a live bunny – which he does.

Esau asks Jackson if he believes in what he’s doing. The man’s obviously in a great deal of pain as he replies, “Yes, sir.” Esau tosses the keys to Bass, and Bass unshackles the man. Jackson immediately drops to the ground, exhausted and injured.

Esau’s men aim their rifles at Bass as Esau tells him it’s time for him to return to being a slave. Bass is stunned and removes his hat, which is a signal for Billy and Sherrill to shoot. The newly freed Jackson rescues Bass from being choked by one of Esau’s men.

Billy and Sherrill chase down Esau’s men as they scatter.

Bass grabs the man’s rifle and follows Esau’s path, stealthily making his way into the barn.

Meanwhile, out in the pitch-dark woods, Billy and Sherrill take down one of the men, but unfortunately, Sherrill’s injured when he steps right into a bear trap. He tells Billy to let him be, but Billy doesn’t listen. As he’s working to free Sherrill, a man takes a shot at Billy. Even gravely injured, Sherrill’s a better shot and kills the shooter.

Billy can’t get him loose, and Sherrill insists he’s going to die from loss of blood or a fever if he gets out of the trap. He admits he’s prejudiced against Indians but slips his badge into Billy’s hand and tells him he’ll make one hell of a Deputy Marshal.

Sherrill sends Billy off to save Bass. After Billy leaves, Sherrill kills himself.

Bass comes under fire but not before noticing the wolf is no longer on the end of its chain. Bass kills one of the men and continues his search of the barn and the surrounding area for Esau. Esau briefly gets the drop on him, and shots are exchanged. Esau manages to escape.

Bass quietly walks back into Esau’s house, does a quick check on an injury to his shoulder, and heads back out just as Billy’s riding up.

Billy hands off the horse, and Bass rides out after Esau. But first, he tells Billy to free all the prisoners.

Bass catches up to Esau’s on horseback and shoots him in the back, causing him to fall from his horse. Bass quickly finishes him off.

Billy works with the prisoners to make sure each man is freed from their chains. Bass learns that Sherrill has died and shows no emotion at the news. He heads into Esau’s home and empties the safe of as much cash as he can stuff into his bags. Bass also finds a bag of diamonds and holds one up to the light.

Lawmen Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 8

The following day, Billy and Bass lead the freed prisoners away from Esau’s place, which is seen burning in the background. Bass hands Jackson the bags of cash and instructs him to take the freed prisoners somewhere safe – somewhere free, like Kansas.

Jackson says no one will ever know, but today Bass made history.

After Jackson and the prisoners begin their journey, Billy tries to hand Bass Sherrill’s badge. Bass won’t take it. Instead, he informs Billy he’ll tell Judge Parker that he earned it. Bass also surprises Billy with a gift of a diamond, suggesting he head to Checotah and ask his girl to marry him.

It’s pitch dark when Bass returns home to find Jennie sitting on the porch. He falls into her arms and they hug, with Bass swearing every part of him is home forever.

The episode – and the season – ends with Bass seated next to Jennie as she plays the piano. Scenes of Bass’s life play out in a montage. “Unholy War” by Jacobs Banks provides the backdrop as Bass watches his family having fun in the yard.

Beauty and the Beast‘s Kristin Kreuk and Catastrophe‘s Rossif Sutherland are on board to star in Murder in a Small Town, a crime drama based on L.R. Wright’s award-winning “Karl Alberg” book series. The series is an international co-production with Canada’s Sepia Films and will shoot in British Columbia.

Fox is targeting a 2024-2025 primetime season premiere for the psychological drama.

Murder in a Small Town follows Karl Alberg (Sutherland), who moves to a quiet coastal town to soothe a psyche that has been battered by big-city police work. ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Episode 6 Recap: “Terrifying Miracles”

Monarch Legacy of Monsters Episode 6
Mari Yamamoto and Wyatt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ episode 6 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

Apple TV+’s first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters continues with episode six, which, unlike episode five, revisits the past and brings Keiko, Bill, and a younger Lee Shaw back into the story. And after an episode that was devoid of monsters – except for a brief glimpse at Godzilla – episode six serves up new scenes with the gigantic monster.

Washington D.C. – The Summer of 1955

Dressed to the nine, Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) escorts Dr. Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto) to the American Defense Industry Federal Summer Ball. Their goal: convince the powers that be to continue funding Monarch.

Lee’s been promoted to captain, and General Puckett (Christopher Heyerdahl) heaps praise on a man he seems to now consider his protégé. The other officers are eager to hear about Monarch but less eager to speak with Keiko. An officer points out she’s Japanese, and Puckett assures them she’s “one of the good ones.”

(Is it just me or is Wyatt Russell looking and sounding much more like his dad, Kurt, as the episodes go on?)

It’s obvious Lee is into Keiko, and Keiko also seems to be interested in the handsome young officer as they dance. They take a break, and Lee confesses being career military wouldn’t be so bad. He could have a house, a family, and live a normal life. Keiko leans her head on his shoulder as they discuss their favorite things about children.

As Keiko and Lee are about to escape upstairs, Lee receives an urgent message from Bill Randa (Anders Holm). They join him at Monarch Headquarters, and Bill reveals he thinks they’ve spotted signs of another Titan. Keiko confirms it’s possible it’s a Titan, but they won’t know until they go to Japan and find out for themselves.

Lee reminds them they need to present their budget ASAP, and Keiko and Bill suggest they split up. They’ll go to Japan while Lee remains behind to plead for more money.

Keiko and Bill arrive on Hateruma Island, Japan, and Dr. Suzuki welcomes them to Monster Island. They quickly get down to work, with Dr. Sukuzi insisting his readings are correct, which Bill points out would mean physics is wrong. Sukuzi prefers to think that theoretical physics is incomplete.

He’s been using an invention of his – a gamma ray simulator – to send out signals, and he’s been getting responses. Keiko calls the invention a Titan phone, but Bill thinks it’s equally correct to call it Titan bait.

Bill calls Lee to let him know their mission is the real deal. They can barely hear each other, and Bill doesn’t respond when Lee asks about Keiko. Bill thinks they have a big fish on their line.

Lee intrudes on General Puckett’s family BBQ and requests that he be allowed to join Keiko and Bill. Puckett warns Lee he has decisions to make and that if he makes the right choice, he’ll get to run Monarch his way.

Monarch Legacy of Monsters Episode 6

The Titan phone/bait is activated, and Bill’s disappointed that nothing immediately happens. Lee drives up, even though he’s supposed to be in a meeting securing funding back in the States. Bill realizes he needs to allow Lee and Keiko time alone to talk, and Keiko seems upset that Lee followed her instead of remaining behind.

Lee insists his place is with her and that without her, there is no Monarch. Keiko thinks they can’t get involved romantically because that will place Monarch’s needs behind theirs. “If we can’t put the greater good before our own desires, we risk losing everything,” says Keiko.

Lee says he doesn’t care, and they kiss. Keiko insists he does care.

Their moment is shattered when Keiko realizes the Titan phone out in the ocean has stopped working. Plus, it’s disappeared. They barely have time to react when Suzuki’s invention comes hurtling through the air and crashes near them on the beach.

They’re looking at it and don’t notice Godzilla emerging in the water right behind them! It’s only now that they realize they didn’t kill it. Lee’s upset by the news while Keiko smiles.

As Keiko, Bill, and Lee return from their trip and enter Monarch’s headquarters, Keiko and Lee are still arguing over whether to inform General Puckett of Godzilla’s reemergence. There’s no weapon that can bring Godzilla down in America’s arsenal, and Keiko believes if they tell Puckett what they just saw, he’ll have the military build a bigger, more powerful weapon.

They enter Monarch’s headquarters to discover it’s full of military personnel. There’s been a change of command during Captain Lee Shaw’s unauthorized absence, and Puckett has handed Monarch’s command over to someone else.

Keiko blames all of this on Lee. He shouldn’t have followed them.

Monarch Legacy of Monsters Episode 6
Kurt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ episode 6 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

Delta Junction, Alaska

Lee (Kurt Russell) is being taken somewhere by Monarch guards, head covered with a hood. The vehicle comes to a sudden stop, and Duvall (Elisa Lasowski) bangs on the door, requesting entry. She knocks out the guards, frees Lee, and demands to know why he believes he knows more about the Titans than the finest minds at Monarch.

Lee confesses he’s making up for not doing enough when he had the chance. He’s been telling Monarch what’s going to happen for years, but they don’t believe him. They just assume he’s crazy.

Duvall claims she only works for Monarch because she’s determined an attack will never happen again. Others at Monarch feel the same. Duvall thinks Lee has the answers she’s been searching for.

Over at the Alameda Point FEMA housing, May (Kiersey Clemons) and Kentaro (Ren Watabe) aren’t nearly as enthusiastic about Cate’s (Anna Sawai) plan to head to the middle of the Sahara. The trio are absolutely shocked to discover Lee and Duvall have made themselves at home inside Cate’s trailer.

They’re not happy to see Duvall, but Lee explains she’s now on their side. Lee and Duvall believe G-Day times 1000 is on its way and that Hiroshi is trying to stop it. Despite Lee’s assurances, Cate and Kentaro want nothing to do with Duvall. Lee insists she’s with them now and no longer taking orders from Monarch.

Speaking of Monarch, Tim (Joe Tippett) and Asst Director Natalia Verdugo (Mirelly Taylor) tracked their phones to Hiroshi’s destroyed office but don’t know what they were looking for there. Tim figures out there’s something missing on the wall and traces the path of pin holes where the map used to be. The pattern seems familiar.

Verdugo reveals Hiroshi was booted from Monarch for repositioning deep space satellites to look at gamma rays on Earth. Tim believes he knows what Bill’s files reveal and what Hiroshi is looking for.

Hiroshi’s next stops should be in Central Asia, Cambodia, and the Sahara Desert. Verdugo orders Monarch’s satellites directed to the coordinates Tim has discovered.

Lee’s group drives through the Algerian Desert, with Duvall quietly assuring May she’ll send her home as soon as they finish this mission. They arrive at a temporary camp in the middle of nowhere, and Cate wants nothing to do with the Monarch personnel there. Lee assures her all the Monarch guys aren’t bad, and these are on Duvall’s – and therefore their – side.

Cate’s frustrated that their search for her dad keeps getting sidetracked by Monarch business. Lee reminds her he could have taken her map at any time but didn’t; it’s just that Monarch and the search for Hiroshi overlap.

If Cate doesn’t help out now, millions of lives could be lost. Cate hands over the map and reluctantly remains on board the mission.

They locate the correct coordinates on the map, and Lee believes whatever they’re looking for is nearby. They stand on a ridge and scan their surroundings, and Kentaro spots his dad down below! They shout to get his attention, and instead of coming to them, he desperately signals for them to get away from there. It appears he’s got a smaller version of Dr. Suzuki’s invention in the back of his Jeep.

Lee realizes what’s happening and gets everyone on the move just as a Monarch helicopter appears overhead.

The ground underneath Lee’s group shakes, and crevices open up as Godzilla emerges from under the desert. Everyone tumbles down the side of a hill as their Jeep flies over them, barely missing them.

Once the dust settles, they are face-to-face with Godzilla. The massive creature rises to its full height, and the helicopter can’t move away quickly enough. It hits the creature’s back and crashes.

Godzilla doesn’t attack Lee’s group even though it looks directly at Cate. Instead, Godzilla heads off in the opposite direction.

Tim and the rest of team in the helicopter are presumed to have perished in the crash. Lee takes permanent possession of Kentaro and Cate’s map, insisting they need to find Godzilla’s next location before Monarch does. Cate has no idea what they’re doing. They can’t stop Godzilla, so what’s their mission>?

“Jesus, Cate, I’m trying to help him!” says Lee.

May thinks Lee’s lost his mind. But Lee promises if they come with him, they’ll learn everything. May’s out and wants to go home, while Cate and Kentaro want to keep looking for their dad. Lee points them back toward civilization and drives off with Duvall.

Hiroshi drove off just as the earth started rumbling, and Kentaro’s not sure if he was really waving them away. (He was.) Cate believes it’s possible their dad left to either escape Godzilla or lure him away. Cate’s happy they’re all alive and that they finally confirmed for themselves that he’s not dead.

Cate hopes May has a backup of their map, and May finally admits she sold them out. She told Duvall where they were in exchange for help getting her life back. “I’m the reason that they found us,” says May.

She has a lot of money and offers to help them out however she can. Cate tells her to go to hell and walks away as episode six ends.

The cast of season one included Luke Macfarlane, Tre Hale, Andrew Lopez, and Carla Gallo. Produced by Sony Pictures Television, the critically acclaimed comedy is executive produced by Byrne, Rogen, Stoller, Delbanco, and Conor Welch.

“Since the first episodes of Platonic debuted on Apple TV+, global audiences have been charmed by the hilarious, wildly fun and relatable friendship that Rose and Seth have brought to life through their charismatic performances,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “We can’t wait for viewers to see these characters encounter even more comedic mayhem in season two, thanks to our partners at Sony and to the brilliant minds of Francesca and Nick.”

Per Apple TV+: Platonic follows a platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife (Rogen and Byrne) who reconnect after a long rift. The duo’s friendship becomes all-consuming—and destabilizes their lives in a hilarious way.
