‘Animal Control’ Episode 1 Preview: Photos, Cast, Plot and Air Date

Fox’s new single-camera workplace comedy Animal Control joins the network’s primetime lineup on February 16, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT. The series stars Emmy Award nominee Joel McHale (Community) and marks the network’s first wholly-owned live-action comedy.

In addition to Joel McHale as Frank, the season one cast includes Michael Rowland as Fred “Shred” Taylor, Vella Lovel as Emily Price, Ravi Patel as Amit Patel, and Grace Palmer as Victoria Sands. Alvina August plays Dr. Summers, Kelli Ogmundson is Dolores Stubb, and Gerry Dee is Templeton Dudge. McHale serves as an executive producer along with Bob Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Rob Greenberg (Frasier), Dan Sterling (King of the Hill), and Tad Quill (Scrubs).

“Weasels and Ostriches” Plot: Shred encounters a wild weasel in an attic. Frank slips his Slim Jim in Shred’s back pocket as they approach a dozen ostriches.

The Plot, Courtesy of Fox:

The series follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale stars as Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals. Humans…not so much.

Frank is assigned a new partner, Fred “Shred” Taylor, an optimistic rookie Animal Control officer. They both report in to their sweet-natured and endearingly awkward boss Emily Price. Amit Patel and Victoria Sands are also partners in the Animal Control office – though they could not be more opposite. Rounding out the precinct is veterinarian Dr. Summers, receptionist Dolores Stubb, and Templeton Dudge an Animal Control officer from a neighboring precinct with a real chip on his shoulder.

‘Great Expectations’ Limited Series Sets March Premiere

Great Expectations Poster

FX has finally set a premiere date for its Great Expectations limited series from writer/executive producer Steven Knight (See, Peaky Blinders, Taboo). The six-part adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel will premiere on Sunday, March 26, 2023 on Hulu with the release of the first two episodes.

The cast was announced in February 2022 and the first two official photos arrived in July 2022. FX chose to announce the premiere date on Charles Dickens’s birthday. (Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Landport, Portsmouth, United Kingdom.)

The premiere date announcement was accompanied by the series’ poster, along with a description of what the artwork represents:

“The newly released key art, true to FX and Steven Knight’s style, features one of literature’s most iconic characters, Miss Havisham ensnaring her pawns, Pip and Estella, in the headdress she still wears from her wedding that never was. Entangled in Miss Havisham’s bitter web are memorable elements from the tale including the decaying Satis House, clocks stopped at 20 minutes to nine, as well as the prison ship and manacles that led Magwitch to Pip, thus beginning the story of Dickens’s beloved Great Expectations.”

The six-episode series stars Fionn Whitehead as Pip and Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham. The cast also includes Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ashley Thomas, Johnny Harris, Hayley Squires, Owen McDonnell, Trystan Gravelle, Laurie Ogden, Rudi Dharmalingam, Tom Sweet, Chloe Lea, and Matt Berry. Tom Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, and Kate Crowe serve as producers, and Brady Hood and Samira Radsi direct.

The limited series is produced by FX Productions in association with the BBC, Scott Free, and Hardy Son & Baker.

The Plot:

Great Expectations is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham shows him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be.

A damning critique of the class system, Dickens’ novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.

Showtime Takes Another Stab at ‘Dexter’ with an Origin Series

Dexter New Blood Poster

Showtime’s taking a deep dive into the world of Dexter, the serial killer who kills serial killers, with an origin series and more of Dexter: New Blood. The origin story, currently titled Dexter: Origins but that may change, will examine Dexter Morgan’s backstory.

Per Showtime: “Dexter: Origins will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter. And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.”

Dexter starring Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter premiered in October 2006 and wrapped up its eight-season run in September 2013. In November 2021, Showtime launched the follow-up series Dexter: New Blood which caught up with the serial killer in hiding. The 10-episode season introduced Dexter’s teenage son, Harrison (played by Jack Alcott).

“The Dexter saga has been an undeniable creative and popular success for Showtime, both in its original, groundbreaking form and the record-setting Dexter: New Blood,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Showtime and Paramount Media Networks. “The series is a rich foundation for other shows in the lane of complex, subversive antiheroes that Showtime has always done so brilliantly. Clyde (Phillips) is deep into compelling stories and characters that will satisfy the cravings of our multifaceted audience.”

Emmy nominee Clyde Phillips is executive producing Dexter: Origins. “I couldn’t be more excited about exploring and expanding the universe of Dexter. It’s a privilege to contemplate going even deeper with these complex and iconic characters – and the stories, themes and possibilities they inspire. I’m thrilled that Chris and my friends at Showtime want me to help them grow this truly unique and amazingly successful franchise.”

Showtime describes Dexter: New Blood as a new incarnation of the 2021-22 drama that’s Showtime’s most-watched series in its history. “The drama focuses on Dexter’s son Harrison, who survived his tumultuous reintroduction with his father and flees to New York City where he must wrestle with his own violent nature and whether, like his father, he too is compelled to kill. Dexter: New Blood will explore the kinds of themes and scenarios seen in the original series on Showtime but through a new lens.” – per Showtime.

The network’s also considering adding to the Dexter universe with series centering on other characters.
