‘Only Murders in the Room’ Releases “Angel in Flip Flops” Music Video

Episode four of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Room season two featured the catchy pop tune “Angel in Flip Flops,” described as a hit by Charles-Haden Savage way back in 1989 (and only in Germany). Written by series co-creator and star Steve Martin and Kirker Butler, the official music video features an animated Martin singing about an angel in flip flops wearing short shorts and a tank top.

“I am as proud of ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ as I am of any work I’ve done that is not that good,” stated Martin.

“When the notion came up in our writers’ room of Charles-Haden Savage, at the height of his success with his original Brazzos series, maybe having recorded an album that did really well in Germany before the Berlin Wall fell, we knew we had to talk further about it – immediately! And so we did – and when we shared this idea with Steve Martin – well, I think it was a day (if even?) before Steve had a title and a tune making its way through his genius mind and we were more than off and running,” explained co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman. “Steve dove in with Kirker Butler to craft a late 20th century classic and then, incredibly, along came Paul Shaffer to arrange that classic that is now our ‘Angel In Flip-Flops.’ We’re all hoping for a revival of interest in the tune, of course — in Germany, and all parts of the world without walls!”

The critically acclaimed, award-winning series premiered on August 31, 2021. Season two debuted on June 28, 2022, with new episodes of the 10-episode season arriving on Hulu on Tuesdays.

Series stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez executive produce along with John Hoffman, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal.

However, three (unfortunate) complications ensue – the trio is publicly implicated in Bunny’s homicide, they are now the subjects of a competing podcast, and they have to deal with a bunch of New York neighbors who all think they committed murder.”

‘Becoming Elizabeth’ Episode 6 Recap: “What Cannot Be Cured”

Becoming Elizabeth Episode 6 Recap

Edward Seymour visits his brother, Thomas, who’s being held in the Tower for attempting to kidnap King Edward as Starz’s Becoming Elizabeth episode six opens. Thomas (Tom Cullen) refuses to explain his actions and Edward’s forced to leave without obtaining any details on his brother’s plan.

Edward Seymour (John Heffernan) joins King Edward (Oliver Zetterstrom) while he’s falconing, and the king’s confused as to why Thomas and Elizabeth would move against him. He’s worried about the extent of the conspiracy and saddened he was betrayed by people he thought loved him.

King Edward also doesn’t understand why his people are rebelling and slitting the throats of the nobles. Edward Seymour’s unable to get him to understand they’re upset about religious reformation.
The King’s in such a rotten mood that he demands the falcon be skinned alive.

Princess Elizabeth (Alicia von Rittberg) has been anxiously awaiting her interrogation and when John Dudley (Jamie Parker) arrives at Chelsea Manor, she demands to know when he’s going to question her. John believes he’s in for a battle of wills and apologizes for delaying her interrogation. He did so so that they could get an unwilling Kat Ashley to confess.

Kat revealed everything she knew about Thomas Seymour’s actions while he was married to Catherine Parr, including how reckless he was around Princess Elizabeth. John Dudley asks what she and Thomas did when there weren’t any witnesses, and Elizabeth claims nothing untoward happened.

Princess Elizabeth denies knowing Thomas Seymour’s plans and says the fact he acted in such a way toward her brother proves she never really knew him. Elizabeth acknowledges she understands she’s in a fight for her life and demands any evidence John Dudley has against her.

John explains he’s aware Thomas wanted to kidnap King Edward and marry her, and Kat confirmed the marriage plans. Elizabeth stands firm in her denials of knowing what Thomas Seymour had planned, but John needs further information proving Thomas is guilty.

Their verbal battle reaches the stage where Elizabeth finally understands that in order to save herself, John Dudley needs hard proof of Thomas’ guilt. Only one of them can be innocent, and John asks for her to say what it is that she needs him to know.

Princess Elizabeth confesses Thomas acted inappropriately around her, and occasionally Catherine joined in. Kat had nothing to do with it and is completely innocent. Elizabeth claims she acted as she saw fit at the time; she can’t deny that.

After Catherine died, Thomas proposed to her but she wanted to obtain the approval of her brother and the council while Thomas did not. If he did what he’s accused of, then Thomas deserves to die.

As John Dudley’s leaving, Elizabeth asks if she proved her innocence. “You told me what I needed to know,” replies John.

Rebels continue to ambush lords and ladies on the road, slitting their throats and stealing their possessions.

The council meets and Henry Grey (Leo Bill) demands justice, citing Thomas’ actions as adding fuel to the rebellion’s fire. John Dudley reveals Princess Elizabeth said Thomas is guilty, and Edward Seymour reacts by ordering Dudley to track down the rebels. As for what will happen to Thomas, Edward hasn’t decided yet.

John Dudley chases after Edward as he leaves the meeting, confused as to why he needs to be the one in charge of stopping the rebels. John believes Edward’s a fool and that he refuses to admit Thomas has committed treason. “He is a villain. Can you not see that?” asks John.

Edward stalks off while John continues to follow, pleading with him to understand the gravity of the situation. They argue over who should squash the rebellion, and John expresses his belief that Edward is responsible for it in the first place because he’s stoked the religious reform. His actions have set the country on fire. John thinks Edward Seymour needs to go do what he does well – fight. He’s not suited for negotiations and diplomacy.

Edward’s heard enough and demands John Dudley obey him. After all, he’s the Lord Protector as well as the king’s uncle. Edward yells an order for John to show mercy to the rebels at John’s retreating back.
Robert Dudley (Jamie Blackley) asks to say goodbye to Elizabeth before they head out. John reluctantly agrees and instructs his son to tell the guards and Elizabeth that she’s free to go.

Elizabeth is shocked to learn it was Robert Dudley who took down Thomas Seymour as he was attempting to escape. Robert suggests Elizabeth not cry for Thomas, and she points out she isn’t crying; she’s just only sad over what’s transpired.

Robert informs Elizabeth she’s no longer under arrest and that he’s leaving to go to Norfolk to put down the rebellion. She begs him not to go and he asks her to look at his bruised, injured face. He hates that she can’t see Thomas for what he is.

Henry Grey, Bishop Gardiner, and other members of the council meet with King Edward while he’s bathing. They call for Thomas Seymour’s execution and have come up with 33 charges against him. King Edward remains in a foul mood and asks what Edward Seymour has to say about this. The order to executive Thomas would require both King Edward’s and the Lord Protector’s signatures.

A few minutes later, King Edward signs the order.

Next, Henry and the men present Edward Seymour with the order. If he doesn’t also sign, then he can step down as Lord Protector. “We have rebellions across the country…we have a war in Scotland…and you’re concerning yourselves with this?” asks an angry Edward.

They suggest if he doesn’t sign, it will be a show of weakness.

Princess Elizabeth pushes her way through guards and bursts into King Edward’s room. Princess Mary (Romola Garai) is already there, and Elizabeth gives her brother a hug before asking him to have goodwill toward her. She assures her brother she didn’t conspire against him and wouldn’t marry without his permission.

Mary calls her sister a fool for not joining her at Framlingham and avoiding this situation. “You are too headstrong,” says Mary. “There’s always a price.”

King Edward believes Thomas should spend his life in the Tower, but Princess Elizabeth is certain traitors deserve death – no matter who they are. Princess Mary appears to reassess her sister and Edward doesn’t respond.

Bishop Gardiner and Henry Grey conspire to remove Edward Seymour from the position of Lord Protector. Henry believes all members of the council should be equal, as per King Henry VIII’s will. But Gardiner has other ideas.

Gardiner leads a secret meeting with Princess Mary and suggests she become the new Lord Protector.

Meanwhile, John Dudley and his sons, along with other men, arrive at Stanfield Hall in Norfolk after passing dead bodies of lords and ladies on the road. John Robsart and his family welcome then to Stanfield, and later over dinner John Dudley declares that the leader of the rebels, Robert Kent, will hang.

John explains the Lord Protector ordered him to show mercy to Robert Kent’s followers. John Robsart’s pretty daughter Amy (who has caught Robert Dudley’s eye) disagrees, wondering if they’re just supposed to ask the people who plow the fields not to murder them.

Amy and Robert flirt after dinner, and John Dudley teases his son about moving on quickly.

Becoming Elizabeth Episode 6 Recap

Edward Seymour pays another visit to his brother in the Tower. Thomas is in the middle of writing a letter that isn’t a confession but rather what Edward labels as “poetry.” Edward explains there won’t be a trial and Thomas is shocked, demanding to know why not. Edward confirms they spoke to Thomas’ men and have obtained confessions. They know what Thomas had planned, and Edward demands to know what he was going to do with King Edward.

Edward Seymour confirms Thomas has been found guilty of treason and people (including every member of the council) are calling for his head. Thomas doesn’t believe King Edward would allow it, but Edward tells his brother the king has signed the order.

Thomas continues to play the victim and blames his brother for everything that’s happening. He thinks Edward has won again, and then asks if his brother is going to allow them to execute him. Edward says he is, even though the pain of that decision will remain with him every day.

Edward begs his brother to accept what he’s brought upon himself and prepare his soul for death. Edward promises to take care of Thomas’ child after his execution.

After his brother leaves, Thomas writes a note to Elizabeth and hides it in his shoe.

Morning arrives and Thomas’ clothes are laid out for his execution. He whispers a request to his servant, Richard, as he dresses, telling him about the note and requesting he deliver it to Elizabeth after his death.

Princess Mary confronts Edward Seymour as he’s on the way to his brother’s execution. She reminds him of the damage he’s done and the lies he’s told about her. She asks if he’ll attend the execution as a brother or as the Lord Protector. Edward says he’s not allowed to be both so it will be as Lord Protector.

Princess Mary reveals she’s been asked to take over as Lord Protector because the council thinks he’s been compromised. She vows to protect her brother and when she walks away, Edward rushes off and grabs King Edward. The current Lord Protector explains Princess Mary is plotting against them and King Edward isn’t safe in the palace. (It’s ironic he’s doing exactly what his treasonous brother attempted to do.)

Edward Seymour hands his son, Edward, a letter to take to John Dudley in Norfolk as fast as possible.
Princess Mary visits Elizabeth, knowing she shouldn’t be alone during the execution.

Edward Seymour and King Edward make it to the river and board a small boat while simultaneously Thomas Seymour arrives at his execution. A crowd has gathered and they jeer him, and Thomas is saddened his brother didn’t even bother attending the execution. He doesn’t make a final statement but instead reminds Richard to keep his promise and deliver the note.

Richard betrays his trust and tells the guards that Thomas has hidden a letter in his shoe. Thomas goes to his death knowing Elizabeth won’t read his note. It takes two blows from the executioner’s blade to remove Thomas’ head.

Princess Elizabeth quietly cries as the bells toll. Princess Mary says, “What cannot be cured must be endured.” Mary speaks gently to her sister, but Elizabeth doesn’t want to be treated like a child and sends her sister away.

John Dudley’s back at Stanfield Hall after tracking down rebels when young Edward Seymour arrives with his father’s letter.

Robert Kent, the leader of the rebellion, is strung up and Robert Dudley delivers a speech to the captured rebels. Robert says they should share the same fate as their leader but instead they’ve been granted mercy. John Dudley listens to his son’s speech and shakes his head when Robert suggests they thank God for the Lord Protector’s mercy.

The letter has angered John Dudley to such a degree that he orders all of the captured rebels to be hanged.

Robert heads to the barn away from the crowd in disbelief. Amy joins him and doesn’t understand why he’s upset. She thinks John, Robert, and the others just saved her family, and unexpectedly she leans in and kisses Robert. She quickly backs away, begging him not to tell her father.

King Edward blames Edward Seymour for everything that’s happening minutes before John Dudley and his men show up.

The Lord Protector hurries outside and apologizes to John for losing his temper, but John is there to retrieve King Edward and try and set the country right. John promises they’ll work together – he as the new Lord Protector and Edward as the former one.

John Dudley proclaims his duty is to his King and his realm.

King Edward has emerged outside and asks John if he’s his savior. “I’m anything you want me to be, Sire,” replies John. King Edward smiles for the first time in days.

Princess Mary has joined the council as King Edward arrives to meet with his advisors. Her presence confirms Princess Mary and some members of the council have moved to name her Lord Protector. John announces to all that he is the new Lord Protector, backed by King Edward. No one – including those who championed Mary – objects.

Kat Ashley returns to Chelsea Manor and is caught up in a loving embrace by Princess Elizabeth. She explains she needs to leave Elizabeth’s service, and Elizabeth assures her she never betrayed her.

Elizabeth doesn’t need to push her way through the guards to speak to King Edward this time. She collects Robert Dudley in a big hug before joining King Edward and John Dudley, and meeting her brother’s new dog.

The siblings are left alone to speak, and King Edward reveals John Dudley said she’s to be trusted. Edward hands his sister the note from Thomas Seymour, assuring her he hasn’t read it. She holds it for a moment, calls it the last words of a traitor, and tosses it into the fire unread.

King Edward smiles and hugs Elizabeth, holding her tight.

‘The Boys’ Spinoff is Officially Titled ‘Gen V’

Prime Video’s spinoff of The Boys will now officially be known as Gen V. Prime Video tweeted a one-minute video with the stars of the college-set series in which the cast members claim the spinoff has everything The Boys has including the intensity, the grit, and the humor. They also teased it’ll be a roller coaster and “filled with blood, guts, and everything else.”

“Superheroes, college….what could go wrong?” asks cast member London Thor.

In addition to London Thor, the season one cast includes Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Lizze Broadway. Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, and Marco Pigossi also star.

The Boys star Jack Quaid responded to the announcement, tweeting: “Welcome to the family, GEN V! I know I’m just an old, decrepit millennial but I can’t wait to watch your show!” And series creator Eric Kripke promised we’re not f**ing ready for this new generation of superheroes.

The spinoff is currently in production. Prime Video hasn’t confirmed a targeted season one premiere date.

Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters are guiding the series as showrunners and executive producers. Additional executive producers include Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Craig Rosenberg, Zak Schwartz, Erica Rosbe, and Michaela Starr.

“Much like Mork & Mindy spun-off from Happy Days—which is an insane and true fact—our spinoff will exist in the Vought Cinematic Universe, yet have a tone and style all its own. It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated, and sometimes deadly Young Supes,” stated The Boys’ showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke when the series was initially announced. “Michele and Tara are stone-cold geniuses, we’re thrilled to have them steer this ship, and grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. We love this show and can’t wait for you to see it. Also, Baywatch Nights spun-off from Baywatch, and it had vampires. Vampires!”

Set at America’s only college exclusively for young-adult superheroes (run by Vought International), Gen V is an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. It’s part college show, part Hunger Games – with all the heart, satire, and raunch of The Boys.

Review: ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’

Paws of Fury The Legend of Hank Poster
Poster for Paramount Pictures’ ‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’

A sweet, naïve dog named Hank (voiced by Michael Cena) who dreams of becoming a samurai finds himself in a town full of cats who can’t stand him because…well…he’s a dog, in the kid-friendly animated movie Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.

Inspired by Mel Brooks’ 1974 film Blazing Saddles and co-written by the iconic actor, the film begins with Hank tricked by Ika Chu (voiced by animal advocate Ricky Gervais) into believing he’s been made the new samurai by The Shogun (voiced by Mel Brooks). Ika Chu informs Hank he’s now the hero of a small town named Kakamucho in desperate need of a samurai to protect them from intruders. What Hank doesn’t know is that Ika Chu secretly wants to drive out the town’s cats so he can demolish their village and expand his palace.

Hank happily agrees and travels to the town only to find the citizens – all cats – immediately hate him just because he’s a dog.

Without anywhere else to go and desperate to become a true samurai, Hank turns to Jimbo (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson), an overweight cynical cat who was once a real samurai. At first reluctant but eventually won over by the idea of brutally training Hank, Jimbo takes Hank under his tail and begins to train him to be a true samurai.

Full of slapstick and adolescent humor, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is an animated re-tooling of Brooks’ film Blazing Saddles seemingly mixed with elements of the Kung Fu Panda trilogy. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as creative or entertaining as those films. The movie lacks any real heart or originality.

The voice cast is strong, with Ricky Gervais stealing every scene as the voice of the true villain Ika Chu. Gervais has great comedic timing and portrays Ika Chu as a sneaky, backstabbing kitty cat who loves only himself and detests everyone else.

Samuel L. Jackson IS Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of Jimbo, the once mighty samurai who now is a big, lazy, depressed cat who needs to help Hank so he can once again become who he was meant to be…a hero. Jackson uses retooled lines from some of his other films, such as Pulp Fiction and Snakes on a Plane, which is sure to entertain the adults while going right over the heads of the kids in the audience.

The computer animation looks good but isn’t anything moviegoers haven’t seen already. The biggest drawback is that there’s zero effort to try to do anything new or original. The story, jokes, characters…it’s all been done better and bigger before.

Still, with slapstick action, some likable characters, and juvenile jokes, Paramount Pictures’ Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is a mildly entertaining adventure that should provide both kids and adults a little escapist summer fun.

Jack In The Box is heavily hip-hop influenced and gives off a ’90s hip-hop vibe. The album contains a total of 10 tracks including the first single, “More,” which was released on July 1st, debuting at number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Track 7 “What If” is sampled from “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” by the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard of the iconic hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Already a fan favorite, “Equal Sign” finds J-Hope showing off his singing voice – a rare treat from the rapper. The song’s powerful lyrics speak to everyone being equal and ask “why is it a sin to be different? Beyond age, Beyond gender, beyond border.”

The smooth flow and narrative in the album can be felt throughout, starting with the first track and concluding with the final track. “J-Hope participated in the overall album making from music, concept, design, and music video, bringing out his own unique colors through the album,” stated Big Hit Music.

Big Hit Music describes the story the album tells as a whole: “The first two tracks, ‘Intro’ and ‘Pandora’s Box,’ tell a story behind the origin of J-Hope’s stage name which comes from Greek and Roman mythology, ‘Pandora’s Box.’ The dual main tracks ‘More’ and ‘Arson’ unfold J-Hope’s authentic stories, from his pure passion to inner shadow and agony, that prove his growth. The album also carries on the essence of BTS who have been validating themselves through music.”

All 10 tracks off of Jack In The Box are currently charting in the top 15 on the All Genres chart on US iTunes, with “Arson” leading the way at number one. Jack In The Box is currently sitting at number two on the All-Genres chart.

Shortly after Jack In The Box dropped, Rolling Stone released an interview with J-Hope in which he expresses his nervousness at being the first BTS member to drop a solo album. “Jack in the Box is filled only with things I personally wanted to do, almost to the point where I worry to myself, “Did I focus too much on solely what I wanted to do?” [laughing] I think that’s where the half nervousness comes from. This album is really meaningful to me, and mostly, I feel proud and excited it’s coming out,” said J-Hope during the Rolling Stone interview.

J-Hope collaborated with the talented artist KAWS for the cover artwork of Jack In The Box.
Talking about their first collaboration together, KAWS said, “I was thrilled when J-Hope invited me to collaborate on the cover artwork for his solo project. We have become friendly the last few years and I’m happy our paths will have crossed at this moment in time.”

‘Alone’ Season 9 Episode 8 Recap: “Gut Feeling”

Alone Season 9 Karie
‘Alone’ season 9 competitor Karie (Photo by: Brendan George Ko / The History Channel)

The History Channel’s Alone season nine episode eight begins with six survivalists remaining in the Labrador wilderness. By the time the episode wraps up, two more contestants have tapped out. One survivalist is forced to leave the game due to medical issues, and the other has multiple injuries and can’t physically continue on his own.

Episode eight, “Gut Feeling,” checks in with all six contestants and moves the season forward from Day 42 to the morning of Day 46.

Karie Lee, Age 57, Sandpoint, ID

Day 42: Karie explains her teeth are turning black because of the cast iron pot she’s using to cook berries. Her fruit leather absorbs the iron, and her teeth are changing color. She uses horsetail to create a tooth powder, hoping it helps. It does, and she’s all smiles as she heads out muskrat hunting.

Karie spends a little time trying to figure out how to hunt in the water without losing her arrow and comes up with a workable solution. She teethers an arrow to her floating line so she can retrieve both it and a muskrat. Karie’s anxious for a meal, but a stationary camera shows a muskrat close by in the water while she’s not paying any attention. (Show of hands of viewers who, like me, yelled at the screen to look up!) Fortunately, she finally notices the animal. Unfortunately, it dives before she gets off a shot.

She returns to her shelter without any food. Karie’s not going to give up on the muskrats but failed on her first hunt.

Karie reminds viewers her goal should she win is to build a wilderness school on land she recently purchased.

Day 43: Karie sings a song she wrote about the area. (The contestants have been doing more singing this season than normal, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing!) She finishes up and turns her attention back to surviving, focusing her attention again on getting a muskrat.

Karie finds a good spot on the bank and waits for any movement. Bubbles appear, and she waits patiently for whatever is about to emerge. A muskrat makes it onto the shore and Karie takes a shot. The arrow hits its mark, and she crawls over to the muskrat while warning it not to go back into the water or bite her.

Karie uses her knife to finish it off and holds up her kill. She’s excited to have dinner, hopes it tastes good, and thanks the animal for its life while stroking the soft fur.

Back at camp, she roasts the muskrat and says it tastes a lot like beaver. (A pound of muskrat has almost 800 calories.) As she eats, snow begins to fall.

Karie’s spent a lifetime preparing for this adventure.

Day 44: Karie’s celebrating Halloween by dressing up as a muskrat, complete with glasses made from muskrat pelvic bone. (Why the glasses? No idea.) She’s created a puppet out of the muskrat fur and performs a little show, confirming the contestants are, in fact, losing their minds.

Alone Season 9 Tom
‘Alone’ Season 9 competitor Tom (Photo by: Brendan George Ko / The History Channel)

Tom, Age 34, Earlysville, VA

Day 43: Tom took a nasty fall on Day 42 and he wakes on Day 43 still in a lot of pain. His back hurts, and he had a sleepless night because he couldn’t get comfortable. Tom’s worried that if he falls again, he could do serious damage.

He’s lost 38 pounds since the first day, but if he gets a beaver, he’ll have a full belly and be able to rest his back for a few days. Tom has realized the challenge isn’t about traps or hunting, it’s about him; it’s about facing his demons.

Tom heads down in the early morning hours to look for a beaver but doesn’t have any luck. Back at his shelter, he boils Icelandic moss, which is rich in calcium, iodine, and potassium. He’s only had lichens and bunchberries the past three days. If he doesn’t get real food, he’ll be in trouble soon.

Although he really should be resting to heal his back, he works on getting clay to seal gaps in his chimney. And, of course, he takes another tumble. Tom goes down hard and it’s obvious he should tap out. This latest fall injures his back and his knee.

Tom grabs his first aid kit and wraps his swollen knee. He believes that if he had food, he would be able to stick it out. But as it is, he can’t even manage to collect firewood.

A Whiskey Jack perches in a nearby tree as Tom makes the call to tap out. He says the area’s amazing and it’s touched parts of him he didn’t even know existed. He’s not done in his heart and mind, but his body is beaten and he needs to leave.

Tom thanks Labrador and everything it gave him. “I hope to take the lessons that I learned and bring them home to make more of my dreams a reality,” says Tom. His dad taught him a lot and was a big inspiration, and he wishes he were still alive to see him take on this challenge.

Alone Season 9 Adam
‘Alone’ Season 9 competitor Adam (Photo by: Brendan George Ko / The History Channel)

Adam, Age 36, Fayetteville, AR

Day 43: Adam prepares his costume since tomorrow is Halloween. He loves making his own costumes and this year he’s created a grouse costume, complete with a bill and feather headdress. The bill’s made of tarp covered in charcoal soot, and Adam seems pretty impressed with his creativity.

Adam uses the wooden dock to make insulated shutters for his window to keep out the wind. His carpentry skills are impressive, and the shutters look professionally made.

Day 44: Adam plays both the part of the homeowner and the trick-or-treater as Halloween arrives. He asks and answers questions and offers up berries as a treat. The trick-or-treating Adam teases the homeowning Adam that another house gave him bear meat and warns Adam he’s going to get egged. (Adam has quite the imagination.)

“Does this whole thing make me seem totally insane?” asks Adam. Yes, Adam, it does.

Day 45: Adam wakes feeling extremely homesick and thinks he needs to stay busy to fight it off.

He finds a new river to fish and is excited by the new possibilities it opens up. He then heads into the woods and spots a hare about 20’ away, killing it with his first shot. It’s a huge hare and he plans on cooking rabbit stew.

Later that night, he eats his first-ever wild hare. Snowshoe hares can contain more than 800 calories, so it’s an important meal for Adam. “Today was a caloric gamble that really paid off,” says Adam, adding that it’s been one of the most eventful days of the challenge.

Alone Season 9 Jessie
‘Alone’ season 9 competitor Jessie (Photo by: Brendan George Ko / The History Channel)

Jessie, Age 49, Pagosa Springs, CO

Day 43: Jessie continues to work on Hodge Podge Lodge a month and a half into the challenge. She’s suffering from an upset stomach and burps while she works. She’s felt queasy for a few days but needs to check on the rabbit fur and finish her walls with moss.

Jessie has no idea why she’s belching so much.

A short while later, Hodge Podge Lodge is officially finished! Jessie realizes she spent too much time on her shelter and is down 45 pounds since Day 1.

She feels nauseous as she heads out to check her snares and is worried that she might have giardia. However, she doesn’t have any symptoms other than stomach pain. Jessie thinks she might be feeling the effects of starvation.

None of her snares have anything in them.

Day 44: It’s nighttime and Jessie’s still under the weather. She continues to feel nauseous and doesn’t even feel like drinking water.

She becomes ill and vomits inside Hodge Podge Lodge. Jessie explains she rarely vomits, so she’s concerned she drank water she shouldn’t have or that she has too much acid in her system.

Jessie decides to have a little charcoal to help her stomach before attempting to drink water. It tastes like eating mud but she’s feeling better a while later. She reminds herself to have faith that things will get better and just needs to push through the suffering.

Day 45: Jessie’s miserable again as she hunkers down for the night. Her stomach’s so empty that now she thinks she’s feeling bad due to acid reflux. She consumes more charcoal but it doesn’t help, and she vomits a couple of times.

At 11:48pm she wakes up and vomits again. (I’m surprised she was able to sleep given how loudly her stomach’s rumbling.) This time she vomited just water and now she has a headache from dehydration.

She refuses to tap out and insists she’ll have to be medically pulled. She’s not going to quit.

Day 46: Jessie didn’t confirm her medical check and a safety crew immediately set out to check on her. She’s in bed when they arrive and she claims she’s okay, but if she gets up, she’ll vomit. Jessie explains she can’t keep down water and has vomited nine or 10 times.

Jessie absolutely doesn’t want to quit but her condition makes it impossible for her to remain in the competition. The medical staff believe she has severe inflammation of her stomach lining and it needs to be treated before it does life-threatening damage.

Jessie’s medically pulled from the competition, and she realizes she spent too much time and energy on Hodge Podge Lodge rather than getting food. If she had just tried to connect to nature more, she would have lasted longer.

Jessie’s determined to spend more time on her spiritual growth rather than with her nose to the grindstone in the future.

Alone Season 9 Teimojin
‘Alone’ Season 9 competitor Teimojin (Photo by: Brendan George Ko / The History Channel)

Teimojin, Age 31, Montreal, CAN

Day 43: Teimojin holds up his second squirrel, but he isn’t done hunting for the day. He’s focusing on land animals and he’s been hearing lots of noise.

A grouse gets his attention and he heads off to follow the sound. He kills the bird with his first shot and returns to his shelter. Teimojin explains that in order to shoot a grouse, you need to aim, look 45 degrees away so you’re not facing the bird, and then shoot. Apparently, the bird will think you aren’t paying them any attention. (Are birds really that smart?)

Day 44: On Halloween, Teimojin talks about Samhain (the Gaelic harvest festival) and how it’s regarded as a good time to reach out to people beyond the grave. Each contestant was given diamond willow fungus that’s used for smudging, and Teimojin burns it as he says thanks to his ancestors.

Alone Season 9 Juan

Day 43: The weather’s turning chilly and Juan’s going to focus on fishing for now. The fish seem to have moved further away from the bank where the temperature’s warmer, and Juan thinks he needs to extend his pier. But is that worth the energy and calories expended?

Ultimately, Juan decides it is worth it and sets to work, hoping he doesn’t regret it.

Juan Pablo wants to be the first non-White to win Alone. “As a Latino, I don’t want to be just a person that you just add for the diversity. I don’t want to be a decoration,” says Juan.

He finishes extending his dock and the effort immediately pays off with a small fish. He reels in a few more brook trout and thanks his catch.

Night falls and he cooks the fish, but, oddly, he doesn’t feel hungry. He eats what he can, but his stomach feels like it doesn’t want food; he can’t believe he doesn’t want to eat. A few hours go by and he doesn’t want to force himself, yet he needs the calories.

Juan’s worried he’s going to get sick and vomit if he eats.

‘The Patient’ Trailer: Steve Carell’s Captured by a Serial Killer

FX just unveiled the official trailer for The Patient, a limited series starring Oscar nominee Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) and Domhnall Gleeson (Run). The 10-episode series is described as a psychological thriller, and the trailer reveals Gleeson’s playing a serial killer with Carell as the unfortunate therapist he’s chosen to tell his secrets to.

The cast also includes Linda Emond, David Alan Grier, Laura Niemi, and Andrew Leeds.

The Patient comes from Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the creative minds behind the award-winning The Americans, which wrapped up in 2018 after airing for six incredible seasons on FX. Fields and Weisberg write and executive produce, with series star Steve Carell, Caroline Moore, Victor Hsu, and Chris Long also executive producing.

The Patient premieres on August 30, 2022 on Hulu.

Here’s FX’s official description of the limited series:

The Patient is a psychological thriller from the minds of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg about a therapist, Alan Strauss (Carell), who’s held prisoner by a patient, Sam Fortner (Gleeson), who reveals himself to be a serial killer. Sam has an unusual therapeutic demand for Alan: curb his homicidal urges.

In order to survive, Alan must unwind Sam’s disturbed mind and stop him from killing again… but Sam refuses to address critical topics, like his mother Candace (Emond). Alone in captivity, Alan excavates his own past through memories of his old therapist, Charlie (Grier), and grapples with waves of his own repressed troubles – the recent death of his wife, Beth (Niemi), and the painful estrangement from his religious son, Ezra (Leeds).

Over the course of his imprisonment, Alan uncovers not only how deep Sam’s compulsion runs, but also how much work he has to do to repair the rift in his own family. With time running out, Alan fights desperately to stop Sam before Alan becomes complicit in Sam’s murders, or worse – becomes a target himself.”

‘She Said’ Trailer Delves Into the Harvey Weinstein Investigation

Two-time Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education, Promising Young Woman) and Critics Choice Awards nominee Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) star in Universal Pictures’ She Said, based on the true story of the New York Times reporters’ investigation into now-convicted felon Harvey Weinstein. The film’s based on She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement written by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, and the new trailer introduces Mullian and Kazan as the reporters who methodically pieced together Weinstein’s decades-long pattern of sexual abuse.

The disgraced former head of Miramax is currently serving 23 years in prison for sexual assault and rape. Additional cases are being brought against the man once thought too powerful to be made to pay for his crimes.

Emmy winner Maria Schrader (Unorthodox limited series) directed from a screenplay by Oscar winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida). Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner produced, with Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle executive producing.

Universal Pictures will release She Said in theaters on November 18, 2022.
