NBC’s La Brea season two episode 12 ended with Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) blowing up the tower. Episode 13, “The Journey Part 1,” confirms the building’s been destroyed but, miraculously, everyone escaped. Only Levi was slightly injured.

Back at the camp, everyone’s dealing with the fact their only way home is gone. Ty’s returned to the fort and Paara, and a bloody nose indicates his cancer’s progressing.

Sam (Jon Seda) holds a community meeting and announces that since they are there for the duration, they need to form a government. Lucas (Josh McKenzie) tosses his hat into the ring – as does Sam – and Judah appoints himself election commissioner.

Gavin (Eoin Macken) is in a surprisingly good mood, considering the circumstances. He’s decided to focus on Eve and the kids. However, when he and Eve (Natalie Zea) kiss, she accidentally slices her hand. Gavin reveals she had that cut in his vision of her death – and it was fresh.

Eve and Gavin tell the kids what’s happening, suggesting they just keep living their lives. Gavin is sure they’ll figure this out.

Meanwhile, Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) is hanging out at the fort since the clearing people don’t want him around. Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) brings him lunch, and Levi suggests they take a walk in the fresh air. (The fort is outdoors, so the air is just as fresh where Levi’s sitting as outside the enclosure, but, okay.)

They walk and although Ty’s a therapist, he reminds Levi he’s not his therapist. Ty’s bleeding continues, and it makes no sense he’s exerting himself on this walk. He informs Levi that he can’t get the pills that would have saved his life because of him. He leaves Levi alone to think about his actions.

Sam’s working on his speech when Riley notices her dad doesn’t have his wedding ring. (We saw him playing with it minutes ago, but Riley didn’t see that.) Lucas is also practicing his speech and Veronica thinks it’s cute that he’s putting all this effort into trying to become a leader.

Veronica thinks the coordinates might still get them home, and Lucas is sure she’s figured it out. Lucas notices her hands are clammy, but Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) interrupts them before they can discuss Veronica’s health.

Levi’s wandering around when he stumbles into Kira. She and some others from the building also survived and she wants his help retrieving a 10,000 BC survival kit Taamet buried in the village. She thinks he owes it to everyone he displaced, and Levi suggests a trade. He’ll get the box if she gives him the treatment for Ty’s cancer.

Gavin visits Silas at the fort and Silas explains Paara is holding him accountable for his past nefarious actions. Gavin shows him Moore’s journal and Silas is shocked by what he reads. He believes Moore must have had a machine here in 10,000 BC and that it is still around. Gavin latches onto the idea of finding it and going home.

Silas believes Moore’s machine won’t create sinkholes like the Lazarus Project. He also knows Moore was incredibly secretive, so it will be well hidden.

Back in the clearing, speeches have been made and it’s time to vote. But wait, Gavin arrives with news that Moore built another portal and it’s only 15 miles away. They know its location because Veronica deciphered Aaron’s clue in the back of the journal. It’s possible they still have a way home! Woohoo!

Anyone who wants to go should gather their stuff and meet up in an hour.

Riley praises Veronica for figuring it out and then notices she doesn’t look well. Riley thinks it might be from the toxins in her system from the sting and heads over to look through supplies for pain relievers. While she’s gone, Veronica takes something from Riley’s backpack.

A large group of clearing dwellers begin their 15-mile walk while Levi digs up Taamet’s box at the fort. Silas joins him and threatens to call the guards if Levi doesn’t tell him what’s going on. Levi’s forced to fill Silas in on his meeting with Kira, and Silas wants in. If he helps Levi save Ty’s life, Paara might let him off the hook.

Once they’ve made it away from the fort, they decide to open the box and Levi looks around for something to break the lock. Silas runs off with the box while Levi’s back is turned.

Unfortunately for Silas, he isn’t exactly a fast runner and Levi quickly catches up with him.
Silas insists he’s going to use the box to get close to Kira and get revenge for Caroline’s murder. Levi insists revenge won’t fix the pain. After destroying the tower, he still feels the loss of his daughter. Silas thinks they can get revenge and Ty’s pills.

The clearing people take a break in their walk while Sam and Gavin look for a way around a steep hill. Izzy uses the break to tell her bro to make up with Riley.

Riley helps one of the clearing people who needs a wound dressed, but she doesn’t have the proper bandage. She rummages through her dad’s backpack and finds divorce papers. Sam discovers her reading them and confesses he took off his wedding ring. It’s complicated, and he suggests now’s not the time to have this discussion.

The walk begins again, and Scott realizes Judah’s happy. Scott never asked about Judah’s life back home; it turns out he has a hot wife and a hot tub. And…Scott’s not listening now, either. He’s distracted by a dead body under a bush and summons the group to check it out.

It turns out there are multiple dead bodies and it appears they were attacked by an animal.
If it wasn’t for Scott seeing dead people, Gavin might not have realized they were about to walk by the spot the coordinates were leading them to. Wait, what? They would have just kept on walking if Scott hadn’t spotted a body?

They spread out and look around the area and Scott finds a teddy bear, so they must have had a kid with them. Scott also finds a locket with a symbol that he realizes matches the symbol on the business card of the people he was supposed to meet for a job interview the day he fell into the sinkhole. He has no idea what it all means. (Join the club, Scott.)

Sam spots a lockbox set into a rock and Gavin hands over the key he found near Moore’s dead body. It fits, and the box contains a map of a cave system where the portal’s probably located.

Riley and Veronica talk and walk, and Riley reveals she knows Veronica stole a pregnancy test. Veronica’s worried she doesn’t know how to be a mom, and Riley gives her a pep talk. Veronica decides to tell Lucas and then take the test.

A kid pops her head out of the woods and then runs off. Scott locates her and hands over the stuffed bear to prove he can be trusted and isn’t a bad guy. Izzy spots one of the red flowers on the kid’s shirt and runs off a short distance. Her family follows and are shocked to see a sea of red flower trees in between them and Moore’s portal.

Sam thinks Eve might not be the only one in danger and suggests a few go to the cave to make sure it’s safe. Sam will check things out with Gavin, Josh, Izzy, and Judah.

Elsewhere, Kira and two armed guards meet with Levi to do the exchange. Before she hands over Ty’s pills, the guards use a Geiger counter on the still-locked box. When it’s opened, Kira confirms the contents are fuel rods for machines that manipulate time. Levi points out he destroyed her machine and Kira says he only destroyed the first one. The journal indicates Moore built another.

Levi realizes the box is Moore’s, not Taamet’s, and that she lied. The guards pull their guns on Levi and are quickly killed by Paara and her warriors. Silas is with Paara’s group as Paara orders Kira to be taken to the village. Paara retrieves the pills and decides that since Silas helped Ty, he deserves another chance.

Scott tries to get the kid to talk and it turns out her name’s Petra and she speaks German. Fortunately, Scott took two semesters and manages to communicate with her.

Lucas admits to Veronica that he thinks he should stay in 10,000 BC because he’s a better man here than he was up there. Veronica suggests working on it together, but Lucas doesn’t think he can be the person she expects him to be back in LA. Veronica puts off telling him she might be pregnant.

A storm is about to hit, and Scott asks Petra about a cave. (Is the word “cave” so common that Scott remembers it from two semesters of German?) Petra reacts in fear and repeats “monster” in English. He quickly draws a picture of a massive lizard killing a stick figure. Petra also reveals the lizard lives in the caves where Gavin’s group is heading.

Eve and Riley grab their bags and head out to warn them.

Gavin’s group notices the cave has been retrofitted except for the massive claw marks in the walls. The marks don’t stop them; they head further into the cave.

Back at the fort, Ty thanks Levi for saving his life. Levi’s decided that he might be able to atone for his past actions by bringing the clearing people the box with fuel rods. Ty’s already feeling better and volunteers to go with him.

Gavin’s group comes upon a door just as Eve and Riley run up. Eve explains there’s something dangerous in the cave and Gavin points out there’s a tree with red flowers right next to the door. Gavin has the vision of Eve lying dead, cut in her palm, with red flowers falling on her body just as the prehistoric lizard growls.

It quickly launches an attack and Gavin knocks Eve aside, causing her to drop her spear. The lizard hits Gavin and knocks him out of the way, but Eve – in full-on momma bear mode – picks up the spear and stabs the lizard, killing it.

Everyone’s safe except for Gavin, who landed on a stalagmite that pierced his abdomen.
