Gavin, Sam, and Levi make plans to hijack the shipment of black rocks as NBC’s La Brea season two episode five kicks off. Sam (Jon Seda) asks all the right questions – it’s good to see Gavin’s involved him in the planning stage – and they figure out where to spy on the Exiles before they put their plan into action.

Eve (Natalie Zea) says her goodbyes to Ty (Chiké Okonkwo) before she heads out with the group. He’s packing up to move to the fort, and she assures him it’s the right decision. He should be with Paara. Before they part, Ty reminds her it’s worse to let the situation fester; she should make a choice between Levi and Gavin.

Eve and Gavin (Eoin Macken) stop by for a last hug with Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) before taking off. Gavin fills her in on Aldridge’s final words and she’s shocked his mom – who she’s never met because everyone assumed she was dead – is going to help them, even though she’s in 1988.

Izzy demands to go with them to the Exiles’ caves. She won’t take no for an answer.

Finally, the group heads out and it includes the aforementioned people as well as Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney) and Lucas. Scott and Lucas (Josh McKenzie) talk as they walk, and Scott’s upset that now everyone is in danger. He blames himself.

Gavin and Eve also talk, and Gavin wishes he could take back everything that went wrong between the two of them. He’s not going to give up on the possibility they’ll get back together and is sure she still loves him.

Eve says nothing.

Virgil makes quite the entrance, stumbling down a hill. He escaped the Exiles with news that the caves are being shut down and all the prisoners are being taken to a different location. Plus, he saw more guards than he’s ever seen before right before he escaped.

Virgil warns that going back to the caves is a suicide mission.

Of course, that doesn’t deter the group. They climb to a lookout point and watch as the wagon’s loaded with black rocks. The prisoners are being readied for a move inland to a place Virgil describes as hell on earth.

There’s a quick discussion about what to do next and it’s decided they’ll split into two groups. Levi, Scott, and Lucas will work on rescuing the prisoners. Sam, Eve, Gavin, and Izzy will hijack the rock shipment. Virgil will head back to the clearing; he’s been through enough.

Ty makes it to the fort and draws everyone’s attention. Paara assures him they’ll get used to his presence in camp. They’re not used to seeing her with a man since her husband died.

Back at the Exiles’ camp, the hijackers plan to wait until the wagon’s on the road and then pick the perfect moment to launch an attack. However, they’ve only gone a few feet when they fall into a booby trap and the door closes behind them. The cave they’re in is filled with giant spiders!

Gavin finds a hole in the wall as Sam holds the spiders back…sort of…with his lighter. They all make it through the wall and close the hole, safe…for now.

They can’t go through the back exit because it’s been closed off. Instead, they’ll have to go through the main gate. Sam volunteers to go check out the guards while Gavin stays with his family. Izzy thinks this is the exact right time to have a conversation about their family. Izzy reminds them both that the visions weren’t her dad’s fault and now he’s trying to make up for things. Sam picks that moment to return with a possible plan. Four guards remain in the caves and there are more outside the gate.

Their best option is to knock out the four guards, steal their clothes, and walk out the gate. They will then be able to hijack the wagon before the Exiles figure out what’s happening.

They take one guard down and the noise draws the remaining three. With the element of surprise on their side, they knock out the threesome with shovels.

Two more guards arrive as they’re changing but leave without noticing what’s going on.

There’s a moment when Eve and Gavin almost kiss, but they don’t because Eve pulls away.

The rescue group is outnumbered but Levi realizes they’re heading north toward Paara’s village. Maybe they can recruit some fighters to help them free the prisoners. Levi takes off toward the village while Scott and Lucas are left tailing the prisoners.

Scott panics when he realizes his vaping days are over. He’s run out which means he’ll have to endure 10,000 BC clean like everyone else.

Scott and Lucas realize they’re about to lose the prisoners. The guards are marching them toward a raft and once they set sail down the river, they’ll be out of sight. Lucas wants to stop the guards now, but Scott holds him back. Scott explains he lost his brother when he was 13 because he failed to act and has deep anxiety issues. He’s constantly worried he can’t protect the people he loves.

Lucas suggests they can act now and save the prisoners. Scott couldn’t save his brother, but he might be able to save these strangers.

Lucas gets the guards’ attention and then takes off running. Meanwhile, Scott heads over to set the sail on fire. The guards turn their attention from Lucas to Scott as he runs his little legs off. He gets away thanks to Paara’s people’s archery skills.

Levi made it to the fort and Paara’s people came through in the clutch.

And now we check in with the hijacking group. Disguises donned, the foursome load up a wagon and head to the gate. Taamet (Martin Sensmeier) seems suspicious but lets them through anyway. Right after they leave, a guard finds the naked Exiles tied up. Taamet goes with a group to hunt them down.

Five Exiles give chase and Gavin makes a quick decision. They head to the trees and abandon the wagon. When the guards arrive, Sam and Gavin leap into action. Fistfights break out, Izzy takes the legs out from under one guy, and Eve hits one in the back. Unfortunately, although the heroes had the upper hand initially, it’s quickly apparent they’re outmatched.

Fortunately, Levi, Paara, Ty, and their group arrive to help turn the tide. Levi rushes to check on Eve and they hold each other tightly. Gavin can only watch.

Taamet manages to run off and Paara and Ty quickly follow. Paara’s about to shoot him in the back when Taamet turns and faces her. She doesn’t take the shot. Just minutes earlier she told Ty her husband was dead…but he’s very much alive and breathing.

Taamet is her husband. (Raise your hand if you saw that twist coming.)

Ty and Paara return to the reunited hijacking/prisoner-freeing group and confirm Taamet escaped. They also reveal Taamet is Paara’s ex. Apparently, he led a rebellion and was forced out of the group, along with his followers.

Taamet formed the Exiles and Paara considered him dead. Now that they’ve attacked the Exiles, Taamet’s group will want revenge.

The group heads toward the secret building with the wagonload of black rocks. Along the way, Scott’s able to toss his vape pen – freed from his anxiety about losing people at last.

Gavin tells Eve his life is nothing without her. He’ll do whatever it takes to win her back.

They get close enough to finally see the towering building. The doors open in anticipation of the black rock delivery.

In The ‘80s…

Caroline Clark’s stunned to learn she’s Josh’s grandmother, but she can see Isaiah in him. Josh describes his dad as a flawed but brave man. And then Caroline has her own shocking news to deliver – Gavin wasn’t born in 10,000 BC; he was born in the future. She traveled to 10,000 BC as part of an experiment hoping to save her world. She’s in 1988 now attempting to fix mistakes they made in the process.

Caroline reveals her work (and that of her colleagues) caused the sinkholes and tidal wave. She jumped to ’88 looking for specific time travel data to complete her work. Once she’s done, she’s heading back to 10,000 BC to stop the sinkholes.

She heads out but not before planning to meet up in two hours to try and get the word out about the impending tidal wave. (The countdown clock to death and destruction is 72 hours and ticking.) Josh reminds her not to try and find Isaiah or it’ll have the butterfly effect.

Of course, Caroline doesn’t listen and contacts Child Protective Services. She goes looking for Isaiah instead of meeting back up with Josh and Riley.

Josh and Riley make it to CPS and watch as Caroline introduces Isaiah to the people who Josh recognizes as his dad’s adoptive parents. They work with Caroline and she set everything up. Caroline tells Isaiah these people are her friends and he’ll have a great life with them.

Tears in her eyes, she says goodbye to her only child.

Josh and Riley catch up with her outside. She explains that since Josh said his dad’s name is Gavin Harris, she was certain where it was that Isaiah was supposed to go. Josh assures her that her friends did a great job raising his dad.

That taken care of, the threesome turns their attention to stopping the tidal wave.
