The opening to Netflix’s Ozark season four episode 10 takes us back to that heartbreaking moment when Wendy (Laura Linney) had her own brother killed in season three. Ben (Tom Pelphrey) is sitting in the diner waiting for Wendy to come back from the restroom. When she doesn’t return, he heads outside and finds Navarro’s man waiting for him.

After pleading for his life, Ben has no choice but to go with him. As they drive, Ben begins to have a breakdown. When he finally pulls himself together, he tells this hired killer about his childhood, about how Wendy loved him more than anything. He asks the man to tell Wendy he’s sorry and that he forgives her. The man forces Ben into what appears to be an abandoned barn and kills him.

As the audience sees Marty (Jason Bateman) traveling to Mexico, we hear Navarro’s voice telling Marty his man Nelson will protect him and his priest will give him legitimacy. However, the rest is up to Marty. Marty will have to make them trust and fear him. He’ll have to convince them he’s not just some messenger boy.

As Marty’s shown to his room we hear Navarro say, “Oh, and they will kill you.”

Wendy receives a call from Marty assuring her he’s fine and she excitedly tells Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) her dad just called and that he’s okay. Charlotte’s only response is a glare.

Marty enters a room where Navarro’s men are waiting and begins by letting them know he was with their boss yesterday. Omar sent him there to inform them Javi Elizondro is dead. Javi’s mother, Camila (Omar Navarro’s sister), is in the room and one of Navarro’s men assumes it was the rival cartel that took him down. Marty corrects them and says Navarro did it.

Marty reveals Javi was a traitor and was making a deal with the US government to bring down their cartel. Also, Javi’s the one who got Navarro arrested.

When they ask who’ll run things now, Marty assures them Navarro will. Of course, they want to know how he’ll do that from prison. Marty dons his boss pants and lets them know he’ll get Navarro out of prison. Understandably, they want to know how he’s going to do that. Marty declares it will happen because that’s what he wants.

“I wanted Navarro to win the cartel war. Who won the cartel war? Now I want him out of prison, so I’m going to get him out of prison,” says Marty.

Right before Marty leaves the room, he tells them he’s going to want to meet with them individually to discuss their business in each of their territories. They’ll need to bring their accountants and their books.

Camila (Veronica Falcón) stops Marty as he’s leaving the meeting and he expresses his sorrow about the loss of her son. Marty claims he doesn’t know how much he can tell her but he can say it was quick. She admits because of the way Javi would talk about her brother she knew this day would come. She lost her father and her husband to this life as well and asks if Marty’s sure he can really get her brother out of prison. He is, and explains about the SDN list and that his wife is working through her foundation to get him off that list and moved back to Mexico.

Wendy shows up at Ruth’s (Julia Garner) trailer and tells her she hasn’t thought this through (meaning Ruth going into business with Clare). Ruth assures her she doesn’t need her advice. Wendy wonders what will happen if Clare likes her product so much that she wants more. Wendy also questions whether Ruth’s prepared to grow illegal opium, asking if that’s what she wants her life to be.

Wendy tries to get Ruth to partner with the Byrdes, explaining that the deal would have to include Ruth telling Clare she has to go through with the donations to the foundation. Ruth asks why she would do that and Wendy replies, “Because you owe us.” That’s rich coming from Wendy since Ruth’s family was killed because of the Byrdes…but sure, Ruth owes them. Ruth refuses to do it.

Acting out of anger, Wendy goes to the sheriff’s office to rat out Ruth and finds a new person in the office, Deputy Wycoff (Brad Carter), as Acting Sheriff. She explains she wants to report a crime before it happens, playing on the fact that sheriff is a political position.

He acts on the tip and heads to the Lazy-O Motel to look for Ruth but instead finds an awkward Sam Dermody (Kevin L. Johnson). Deputy Wycoff informs him that he’s heard Ruth used to be in business with Darlene. Sam claims not to know; he just checks in guests. He asks Sam if he does the books for the motel and Sam points him in the right direction to who does.

Deputy Wycoff pays Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) a visit and is surprised to find out that he’s Ruth’s bookkeeper. He wonders if Jonah’s mom knows about all of this and tells him he needs to ask some questions, like what kind of bookkeeping he does. Jonah gives him the basics. Deputy Wycoff asks if he ever did any bookkeeping for Darlene or if Ruth ever asked him to do anything for Darlene. At just that moment Nathan (Richard Thomas), Jonah’s grandpa, comes walking up wanting to know why Wycoff’s questioning a minor without a guardian present. Wycoff notes that now that Nathan’s there, they can go inside so he can continue to ask Jonah questions. But, in this case, it’s grandpa to the rescue! He tells the deputy he doesn’t think so. And, besides that, he and Jonah are just about to go to lunch.

Marty’s going over financial reports with a few of Navarro’s men when he gets a call from Wendy asking if he’s doing okay. After filling her in on how it’s going in Mexico, he asks how it’s going with Clare. She confirms Ruth wouldn’t help (gee, wonder why?) so she tipped off the new sheriff. The look on Marty’s face indicates he’s not thrilled about that but, of course, he doesn’t say anything. Wendy informs him she’s going to pay Jim Rattelsdorf a visit. Marty’s surprised by this considering that Jim told them he never wanted to see them again.

Jim (Damian Young) is obviously not thrilled to see Wendy but lets her in his house anyway. He reminds her he had to watch a psychotic drug lord beat up her husband in his living room and then lie to his own husband as to why he couldn’t meet him for lunch. Jim doesn’t want to work for her but she has a feeling that’s not entirely true. She explains he doesn’t have to worry about Javi anymore because he’s dead and Navarro is the one who killed him. She fills him in on their plan to get Navarro back to Mexico and back to fully running the cartel.

Wendy assures him they can do all of it but to do so she needs the full power of their board of directors. Jim reminds her they won’t fall in line unless she has donations coming in. She wants Jim to help her get donations by getting them all to attend a fundraiser at the casino by the end of the week.

Mel locates the officer who questioned Wendy and Ben. She remembers them and recalls Ben saying the Mexican cartel was after them. Mel asks if it was Omar Navarro and the officer’s shocked Ben’s story might have been true. Mel asks what Wendy said and she remembers her explaining that Ben had a mental illness. The officer agrees to help Mel out by getting him surveillance footage from along the 50.

Ruth rents a U-Haul and notices a black car watching her. After it follows her to the Snell farm, an angry Ruth shows up at the police station and confronts the deputy. She’s upset he spoke with her employees and that he’s having her followed. He reveals he got a big tip that she’s about to make a big mistake. Ruth isn’t stupid and knows he’s in Wendy’s pocket.

Next, Ruth visits Frank Jr. (Joseph Sikora) and confirms she got rid of the gun he gave her. She needs another favor and asks for his help moving heroin because the local cops are onto her. She admits she thinks the Byrdes are messing with her. Frank tells her he never pegged her as a Darlene Snell wannabe; he always thought she was a Marty Byrde Jr. She doesn’t like that comment.

Marty’s going through one of Navarro’s men’s financials when he discovers there’s a cash flow discrepancy. The accountant claims it wasn’t him but his boss beats him anyway.

Meanwhile, Navarro (Felix Solis) is walking down the hall in prison when suddenly he’s shanked by a man several times. He’s injured but ends up getting the upper hand and strangles the man.

Wendy calls Marty to tell him about what happened to Navarro. She reveals he’s in a coma and doesn’t know when he’ll wake up.

Omar’s sister comes to talk to Marty about the attack in prison and it’s obvious he doesn’t want anyone to know Omar’s in a coma. Marty dodges the truth and tells Camila he is strong and he took down the man who tried to kill him. She briefly looks surprised. Marty asks about one of Navarro’s men, Cabrera, and Camila says she’s known him since he was a boy. Marty informs her he caught him cheating the cartel. Camila confesses Javi never trusted Cabrera.

Marty has Cabrera taken to the same hole he was once held in. Cabrera’s tortured but refuses to say he ordered the hit on Navarro.

Nathan visits his daughter and gives her missing persons flyers to put up for Ben. He wonders how Jonah’s doing and if he’s upset. When Wendy looks puzzled, he asks if Jonah told her about the sheriff. He lets her in on the fact the sheriff was interrogating her son at the hotel. She seems pleased Jonah was questioned and asks if Nathan knows what the sheriff was after. He doesn’t know and doesn’t care. His concern is for her son and it should be her concern too.

Back in Mexico, Cabrera continues to be beaten and tortured. Marty stops them and steps outside for a moment. The priest finds him and they have a conversation about God.

Ruth gets in the U-Haul and heads back to the Snell place while still being followed. The cops watch as she loads items into the back of the truck. They stop her at the end of the driveway and she explains she was getting her cousin’s things out of the house. When they open the U-Haul, they don’t find what they’re looking for because Ruth isn’t stupid.

While Ruth’s U-Haul’s being searched Frank Jr’s men are at the barn loading up the drugs.

Jonah’s passing out flyers and Wendy asks for some so she can help pass them out. Wendy then spots her dad’s girlfriend Annalise and Charlotte selling baked goods. Wendy asks for a favor from Charlotte, requesting she attend the fundraising dinner. Even though Charlotte isn’t happy with her mom for making her dad go to Mexico, she agrees to help her out anyway.

Ruth shows up at the search headquarters and asks Wendy if she’s proud of herself. She knows Ben won’t be coming back and yet she’s got her kids out there lying to everyone. Wendy says no one asked Ruth to be part of the search, and Ruth lets her know that indeed someone did ask her to be there – Wendy’s father. Ruth is over listening to Wendy and informs her that her little plan with the sheriff didn’t work and her deal with Shaw is over. She warns Wendy to stay out of her business.

Wendy and Charlotte’s planning session for the fundraising dinner is interrupted when Jim breaks the news the dinner isn’t happening. Shaw Medical pulled out and will not be donating. He reminds her she needs money to get people on her side and they only have one more crack at this.

Wendy leaves another threatening voice message for Clare warning her if she’s not happy then the people she works for aren’t happy. Wendy will give her one more chance to fix this.

Marty continues to have Cabrera tortured while demanding he admits he ordered a hit on Navarro. Cabrera finally admits to messing with the books but swears he didn’t order a hit.

A short while later Cabrera’s had enough and takes the blame, confessing he ordered the hit.

Season four episode 10 ends with Marty telling Wendy about everything going on in Mexico and watching as Cabrera is killed.
