Oscar nominee Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) has signed on to star in Netflix’s The Four Seasons. The comedy series, which will start production later this year, was created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Fey will star in the series and serves as a writer and executive producer.

The series is based on the 1981 film starring Alan Alda and Carol Burnett. Alda wrote and directed the Universal Pictures release which earned a fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

“In this heartfelt comedy about three 40-something couples who frequently vacation together, life’s ups and downs take their toll. Their perfect dynamic is forever changed when one friend leaves his wife for a much younger woman,” reads Universal’s film synopsis. “The lines are drawn when they are forced to take sides regarding the new couple, reminding US that friendship is like the seasons; forever changing.”

Netflix hasn’t confirmed how close the series adaptation will stick to the film’s plot.

The Four Seasons is a Little Stranger, Inc. production, with Alan Alan and Marissa Bregman involved as producers. Executive producers include Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, Tracey Wigfield, David Miner, Eric Gurian, and Jeff Richmond. Fey, Fisher, and Wigfield are writing the first season.

The new comedy continues Fey’s relationship with Netflix, a partnership that includes the critically acclaimed Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Girls5eva. Fisher co-created Never Have I Ever and Wigfield created Great News and the 2020 version of Saved by the Bell.
