Mank has been topping a lot of nominee lists yet hasn’t been a big winner thus far. David Fincher and the cast are hoping that all turns around after leading the list of 2021 Oscar nominees. The 93rd Academy Awards nominations, announced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas, found The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 following behind with six nominations each.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences always releases a “sidebars” fact sheet along with the nominations. This year’s key facts include:
- Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) are the sixth and seventh women to earn Best Director nominations. This year mark’s the first time two women have competed in the category in the same year.
- Emerald Fennell is the first woman to be nominated for her feature film directing debut.
- Chloé Zhao is the first woman of color to be nominated for directing.
- Leslie Odom, Jr. is the fourth person (and first man) to receive acting and song nominations for the same film.
- Chadwick Boseman, who died on August 28, 2020, is the seventh performer to receive a posthumous nomination. Peter Finch (Network) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) won posthumously.
- Anthony Hopkins is the only acting nominee who was also nominated last year. There are 11 first-time acting nominees and five of the acting nominees have won Oscars.
The 2021 Oscars will take place on April 25, 2021. This year’s ceremony will look different from previous years as the ceremony will be held at two locations: Union Station Los Angeles and Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. The broadcast will air live on ABC beginning at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
