M. Night Shyamalan’s back on top the box office charts with his new psychological horror film, Split. The PG-13-rated thriller written, directed, and produced by Shyamalan stars James McAvoy as a man with 23 personalities. Split earned a B+ from audiences, according to Cinemascore, and currently sits at 76% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Vin Diesel’s return to the xXx franchise in the leading role of Xander Cage wasn’t greeted with the same sort of box office success as the original xXx film released back in 2002. That film grossed $44 million domestically over its opening weekend and $277 million overall worldwide before exiting theaters. 2002’s xXx was made for $70 million-ish while this third film of the franchise had an estimated $85 million budget. The second film of the series, xXx: State of the Union, had Ice Cube in the lead role instead of Diesel. xXx 2 rang up $12 million over its first weekend in release and just $71 million total by the end of its theatrical run.

A Dog’s Purpose had been the favorite to take over the number one spot for the January 27-29, 2017 weekend, however after the video surfaced of a German Shepherd being forced into rough water, the comedy/drama will likely see a much lower than expected box office take.
