How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World continues to pull in family audiences, keeping its grip on the top spot on the box office chart for its second weekend in a row. Its biggest competition over the March 1-3, 2019 weekend came from the final film of the Madea franchise, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. The ninth film of the successful comedy film franchise had to settle for second place while outperforming pre-release estimates.

The first weekend in March also marked the release of the thriller, Greta, directed by Neil Jordan (The Borgias, The Brave One). Starring Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz, the Focus Features release didn’t earn a lot of love from critics or from ticket buyers. Greta currently sits at 57% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and pulled in a disappointing $4.5 million over its opening weekend.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be relinquishing its box office crown next weekend with the arrival of the much-anticipated comic book-inspired film, Captain Marvel. Opening in 4,100+ theaters, Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson is expected to turn a disappointing box office year around by pulling in at least $130 million.

Box Office Top 10: March 1-3, 2019

  1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – $30,046,000
  2. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral – $27,050,000
  3. Alita: Battle Angel – $7,000,000
  4. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – $6,615,000
  5. Green Book – $4,711,000
  6. Fighting with My Family – $4,691,000
  7. Isn’t it Romantic – $4,645,000
  8. Greta – $4,585,000
  9. What Men Want – $2,700,000
  10. Happy Death Day 2U – $2,516,000

The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins, a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent whose second job is to keep Magnum in line, with the help of her two Dobermans. One of Magnum’s biggest supporters is Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, the unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest. With keys to a vintage Ferrari in one hand, aviator sunglasses in the other, and an Old Düsseldorf longneck chilling in the fridge, Thomas Magnum is back on the case!

Ava DuVernay’s Central Park Five Netflix Series Will Premiere in May

Netflix has confirmed the official title and premiere date for Oscar nominee and Emmy Award winner Ava DuVernay’s Central Park Five limited series. When They See Us, based on the heart-wrenching true story, will air on May 31, 2019.

The limited series consists of four episodes co-written and directed by Ava DuVernay (13th, Selma). DuVernay also executive produced the series with Oprah Winfrey, Jane Rosenthal, Berry Welsh and Robert De Niro. DuVernay’s co-writers include Attica Locke, Robin Swicord, and Michael Starrbury.

“In 1989, five black and brown teen boys were wrongly accused of a crime they did not commit and branded The Central Park Five, a moniker that has followed them since that time. In 2019, our series gives the five men a platform to finally raise their voices and tell their full stories. In doing so, Korey, Antron, Raymond, Kevin and Yusef also tell the story of many young people of color unjustly ensnared in the criminal justice system,” explained DuVernay. “We wanted to reflect this perspective in our title, embracing the humanity of the men and not their politicized moniker.”

The cast of When They See Us includes Emmy Award nominee Michael K. Williams, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga, Emmy Award winner John Leguizamo, Oscar nominee and Emmy Award winner Felicity Huffman, Emmy Award nominee Niecy Nash, Emmy Award winner Blair Underwood, Emmy Award and Grammy Award winner Christopher Jackson, and Joshua Jackson. The cast also features Omar J. Dorsey, Adepero Oduye, Famke Janssen, Aurora Perrineau, William Sadler, Jharrel Jerome, Jovan Adepo, Aunjanue Ellis, Kylie Bunbury, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Storm Reid, Chris Chalk, Freddy Miyares, Justin Cunningham, Ethan Herisse, Caleel Harris, Marquis Rodriguez, and Asante Blackk.

The When They See Us Plot:

“Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The four part limited series will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise. Beginning in the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident, the series will span 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.”
