Netflix and Constantin Film have announced deadmau5 will be the creative force behind the film score for Polar. Polar will mark deadmau5’s first time handling the score of a film.
deadmau5 confirmed the news via Twitter. “well, the mouse is outta the bag…working on my first film score for @constantinfilm @Netflix’s #Polar. In honor of @theofficialmads character, I’ll be wearing an eyepatch the entire time #blackkaiser.”
Polar was written by Jayson Rothwell (Silent Night) and is directed by Swedish filmmaker and drummer Jonas Åkerlund (Lords of Chaos). The film’s a Constantin Film/Bolt Pictures co-production, in association with Dark Horse Entertainment, and has Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange, Rogue One), Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers, Beastly), Matt Lucas (Alice In Wonderland, Doctor Who), and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) in starring roles.
The action drama’s being produced by Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer (Resident Evil franchise), Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil franchise, Death Race), and Hartley Gorenstein (Room). Constantin Film’s Martin Moszkowicz and Mads Mikkelsen, and Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg, are executive producing.
Netflix has planned a 2019 release. Constantin Film will be in charge of Polar‘s release in Canada, Germany, and China.
deadmau5 is considered to be one of the world’s most respected electronic music producers. He’s released seven critically acclaimed albums, has won Juno awards, and has earned multiple Grammy nominations.
The Polar Plot:
“Polar is based upon the Dark Horse action noir graphic novel Polar: Came From the Cold by Victor Santos. The world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla, aka The Black Kaiser, is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced. The action, mystery and intrigue will be set entirely to a custom body of menacing productions by deadmau5.”

Warner Bros Pictures officially confirmed filming is now underway on the standalone film, Joker. Three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, Gladiator, and The Master) is taking on the title role in the dramatic film which was co-written, produced, and is being directed by Oscar nominee Todd Phillips (Borat).
The cast of the 2019 release includes two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro (Raging Bull, The Godfather: Part II), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow, Molly’s Game), and Frances Conroy (American Horror Story, Castle Rock). Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions, Barry), Douglas Hodge (Red Sparrow, Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (Maron, GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), and Shea Whigham (First Man, Boardwalk Empire) are also part of the cast of the standalone film.
Director Phillips, best known for The Hangover comedy movies, co-wrote the film with The Fighter‘s Scott Silver, based on characters from DC. Phillips’ and his The Hangover star Bradley Cooper’s production company, Joint Effort, is involved in producing Joker. Emma Tillinger Koskoff also produces, and Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

Nick confesses we can’t fight outside threats without her help, and Captain Marvel replies, “I’m not what you think I am.”
In addition to Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, the cast includes Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (The Book of Henry), Lashana Lynch (Brotherhood, Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá, Sugar), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), Mckenna Grace (I, Tonya), Clark Gregg (Live by Night, The Avengers), and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).

The 2018 Emmy Awards audience rarely provided any evidence they were indeed alive, most of the jokes fell flat, and the vibe was decidedly low-key. Other than a marriage proposal during an acceptance speech, the 70th Annual Primetime Emmys was a forgettable affair. The show kicked off with a song about diversity before commencing to prove there’s still much that needs to be done in terms of racial equality.
The night’s big winner was Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which earned Emmys in categories including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress in a Comedy, Supporting Actress in a Comedy, and writing and directing Emmys for Amy Sherman-Palladino. FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story also had a big night, earning the Outstanding Limited Series Emmy as well as wins for lead actor Darren Criss and director Ryan Murphy.
FX’s The Americans ended its runs with two Emmy wins for lead actor Matthew Rhys and for writers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. HBO’s Game of Thrones was named outstanding drama and Peter Dinklage earned another Emmy in the supporting actor category. Netflix’s Godless, HBO’s Barry, and Netflix’s The Crown also each earned two Emmy wins.

Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War) and Jamie Dornan (the Fifty Shades films) are said to be in negotiations to take on starring roles in Synchronic. The film’s described as a sci-fi thriller and has Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead on board as directors.
“Being huge fans of the nuanced, brilliant work of Anthony and Jamie, this is a filmmaker’s wildest dream come true,” stated Benson and Moorhead. “They each possess an extraordinary depth of personal experiences, humor, and pathos that brings a massive wellspring of humanity to the battle-scarred partnership being portrayed. We’ve found the perfect collaborators to tell a bold, frightening, heartstring-tugging story.”
Benson and Moorhead previously collaborated on The Endless, Spring, and Resolution. The Endless starring Benson, Moorhead, and Tate Ellington currently sits at 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. 2015’s Spring with Lou Taylor Pucci also received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with Empire Magazine saying, “The storytelling is unfussy but still implies backstory and emotional connections that take a while to become clear.”
Benson wrote Synchronic and produces with Moorhead for Rustic Films. David Lawson Jr is also on board as a producer. XYZ Films is handling the thriller’s international sales, and co-handling domestic rights with UTA.
“This is the fourth collaboration between XYZ and these phenomenal filmmakers. Their body of work thus far speaks to their confidence to go against the norm and tell genuine stories that cross genre. We’re honored to work with them again to bring Synchronic to audiences around the world,” said XYZ Films’ Nate Bolotin.
Anthony Mackie’s credits include The Hate U Give, Detroit, All the Way, The Night Before, Our Brand is Crisis, and Pain and Gain. He’s currently working on The Woman in the Window, a crime drama directed by Joe Wright and starring Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, and Gary Oldman.
Jamie Dornan starred in the three films of the Fifty Shades franchise, based on the bestselling books by E.L. James. Dornan also starred in The Fall, Anthropoid, and The 9th Life of Louis Drax. He recently finished work on Robin Hood with Taron Egerton, My Dinner with Herve alongside Peter Dinklage, and A Private War with Rosamund Pike.
The Synchronic Plot:
“The film follows two New Orleans paramedics (Mackie and Dornan) whose lives are ripped apart after encountering a series of horrific deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects.”
Netflix just released the trailer along with a poster and photo for the horror/thriller, Apostle, which comes from The Raid writer/director Gareth Evans. In the first official trailer, Dan Stevens‘ character warns, “Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they ravening wolves.”
In addition to Dan Stevens (Legion, Beauty and the Beast), the Apostle cast includes Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Mark Lewis Jones (Child 44), Bill Milner (The Lodgers), Kristine Froseth (Sierra Burgess is a Loser), Paul Higgins (Line of Duty), and Michael Sheen (Good Omens).
Aram Tertzakian and Ed Talfan served as producers. Gareth Evans’ behind the scenes team includes director of photography Matt Flannery, production designer Tom Pearce, and costume designer Jane Spicer. Evans edited the film and Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal handled the music.
The film will have its world premiere at the Fantastic Fest in Austin on Friday, September 21, 2018. Netflix has set an October 12, 2018 global streaming release date.
The Apostle Plot:
“London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives under the leadership of the charismatic Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen). As Thomas infiltrates the island’s community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult’s ranks nonetheless – and uncovers a secret far more evil than he could have imagined.
Written and directed by Gareth Evans, Apostle is a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.”

Netflix’s upcoming first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set to premiere on October 26, 2018. With the premiere just weeks away, Netflix has unveiled details on the character who will populate season one.
In addition to releasing character descriptions, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina put out photos of the key characters/cast members. The cast is led by Kiernan Shipka and includes Ross Lynch, Miranda Otto, Michelle Gomez, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, Abigail Cowen, Richard Coyle, Jaz Sinclair, Lachlan Watson, Lucy Davis, Gavin Leatherwood, and Chance Perdomo.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Plot:
“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina
SABRINA SPELLMAN (Kiernan Shipka) An empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, Sabrina is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world. Pictured with Lachlan Watson (As Susie Putnam), Jaz Sinclair (As Rosalind Walker) and Ross Lynch (As Harvey Kinkle).
Ross Lynch as Harvey Kinkle
HARVEY KINKLE (Ross Lynch) is Sabrina’s boyfriend. The prince charming of this dark fairy tale, Harvey is the son of a coal miner, a dreamboat and a dreamer, completely unaware of the dark forces conspiring to keep him and Sabrina apart.
Miranda Otto as Zelda Spellman
ZELDA SPELLMAN (Miranda Otto) is Sabrina’s sterner witch aunt. Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina, and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.
Michelle Gomez as Madam Satan
MARY WARDWELL / MADAM SATAN (Michelle Gomez) is Sabrina’s favorite teacher and mentor at Baxter High. When she is possessed by the Devil’s handmaiden, MADAM SATAN, Ms. Wardwell turns into a sultry, cunning manipulator, always trying to lure Sabrina down the Path of Night.
Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Abigail Cowen
THE WEIRD SISTERS; AGATHA (Adeline Rudolph), PRUDENCE (Tati Gabrielle), DORCAS (Abigail Cowen) The three Weird Sisters—a trio of powerful, uncanny teenage witches at the Academy of Unseen Arts who look down their noses at Sabrina for being half-mortal.
Richard Coyle as Father Blackwood
FATHER BLACKWOOD (Richard Coyle) is High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts. Ruthless and ambitious, Blackwood hides a terrifying dark agenda that will put him in direct conflict with Sabrina and other members of the coven.
Jaz Sinclair as Rosalind and Lachlan Watson as Susie
SABRINA’S FRIENDS, ROSALIND WALKER (Jaz Sinclair), & SUSIE PUTNAM (Lachlan Watson) Rosalind, the brash, empowered and outspoken daughter of Greendale’s minister and Sabrina’s best friend at Baxter High. Susie Putnam is one of Sabrina’s friends at Baxter High and a founding member of the school’s newly formed WICCA club. Brave and optimistic despite being bullied at school, Susie lives on a farm at the outskirts of town and deals with a terrifying supernatural threat at home.
Lucy Davis as Hilda Spellman
HILDA SPELLMAN (Lucy Davis) is one of Sabrina’s two witch aunts. More nurturing than Zelda, Hilda’s motherly nature and warm sense of humor belie a wicked, ghoulish streak. She is as adept at brewing spite jars against her family’s enemies as she is at concocting love potions for the students at Baxter High.
Gavin Leatherwood as Nicholas Scratch
NICHOLAS SCRATCH (Gavin Leatherwood) is a young, handsome warlock at the Academy of Unseen Arts who befriends new student Sabrina Spellman. An acolyte of Sabrina’s father’s teachings, Nicholas is drawn to Sabrina, as well, and there are immediate sparks between them.
Chance Perdomo as Ambrose Spellman
AMBROSE SPELLMAN (Chance Perdomo) is Sabrina’s warlock cousin from England. Placed under house-arrest by the Witches Council, Ambrose is forbidden from leaving the funeral home where he lives with the Spellman woman. Witty, puckish, and pan-sexual, he is one of Sabrina’s partners in crime, always up for mischief.
