‘Logan Lucky’ Movie Review

Logan Lucky cast

“I am in-car-cer-a-ted,” says Joe Bang (Daniel Craig). “Yeah, we got a plan to get you out,” replies Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) as he and his brother, Clyde (Adam Driver), are getting ready to try to pull off a heist and are in desperate need of Bang’s talents in the comedy caper film, Logan Lucky.

Jimmy Logan is a dedicated father to his daughter, Sadie (Farrah Mackenzie), but when he loses his construction job due to insurance issues and his ex-wife, Bobbie Jo (Katie Holmes), tells him she and her husband are moving across state lines, he becomes determined to get enough money to fight for custody. The problem is he doesn’t have a dime to his name. Undeterred, Jimmy recruits his one-armed brother, Clyde, to help him put together a small crew to pull off a complex heist.

While Logan was working construction and building new underground tunnels for NASCAR, he discovered where they store the money and how they move it during the races. Realizing they’ll need the talents of a professional thief who knows how to blow up bank vaults, the Logan brothers visit Joe Bang in prison to talk him into joining them. Once they reveal their plan to get him out of prison and then back into it without the guards and prison staff noticing, Bang decides to throw in with the brothers provided they also bring in Bang’s two brothers to help as well.

Reluctantly, the brothers agree. They also bring in their kid sister, Mellie (Riley Keough), to help. With their crew assembled and a plan worked out, the Logan brothers move forward with their robbery during the legendary Coca-Cola 600 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and featuring a first-rate cast, Logan Lucky is a clever, well-written, and hilarious caper film that has twists and turns no one will see coming. It’s a laugh-out-loud, charming, and at times sweet movie with likeable characters brought to life by A-list talent.

Channing Tatum shines as Jimmy, the down-on-his-luck father who only wants to stop his ex from taking his daughter further away from him. He only plans the heist as a way to keep his little girl close to him. Channing’s Jimmy is the heart and soul of the film. Tatum also has great chemistry with Adam Driver who plays his loyal, one-armed brother Clyde who at first wants nothing to do with the caper, telling his brother that his life of crime is over. Clyde ultimately gives in simply because they’re incredibly close and would do anything for each other.

It’s Daniel Craig, however, who steals (pun intended) the film with his entertaining performance as Joe Bang, the “bank vault expert” who, without the brothers, has no hope of pulling off a heist. Every scene with Craig crackles with energy and his deadpan delivery of funny lines hits perfectly every time. The most entertaining scenes include Craig.

Riley Keough is sexy and sassy as little sister Mellie who has more smarts than her two brothers put together but refuses to let them try this crazy scheme without her help. She’s probably the most sane and sensible character in the film.

With excellent directing, a superb cast, and a smart, original and very funny script, Logan Lucky is one of the best comedy heist films to come along in years. It’s also one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Don’t let yourself be robbed of a good time at the movies, go see Logan Lucky.

‘The Gifted’ – Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White Interview on Playing Mutants

Natalie Alyn Lind (‘Lauren Strucker’) and Percy Hynes White (‘Andy Strucker’) play mutants in the new Fox series, The Gifted, set to premiere on October 2, 2017. The series takes place in the X-Men universe and in addition to Lind and White, stars Stephen Moyer (‘Reed Strucker’), Amy Acker (‘Caitlin Strucker’), Sean Teale (‘Eclipse’/’Marcos Diaz’), Jamie Chung (‘Blink’/’Clarice Fong’ aka ‘Clarice Ferguson’), Coby Bell (‘Jace Turner’), Emma Dumont (‘Polaris’/’Lorna Dane’), and Blair Redford (‘Thunderbird’/’John Proudstar’).

Teamed up at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con to discuss the show’s first season, Lind and White shared details on their characters while attempting not to give away any spoilers.

Both of your characters have powers?

Natalie Alyn Lind: “My character when we start off the show she is a teenager going through every day teenage stuff. But what you realize as the series continues is that she is actually a mutant and has known that she’s a mutant for years and has kind of kept it to herself for years because she doesn’t want to tell anybody in her family or her friends because people see mutants as threats, as weirdos, as these weird people that just need to be separated from everybody.

And our father in the show, Reed Strucker, he is a mutant prosecutor. He likes to take mutants and put them in jail and put them in this detention center that you never get out of. So, when she finds out she has powers she keeps it on the low until something happens with her brother, Andy, where her powers kind of manifest and have to come out and show the world that she’s secretly a mutant. Which I actually like – I don’t know why she didn’t like it! But, yeah, I think being a mutant would be pretty cool.”

Is this revealed in the first episode?

Percy Hynes White: “Yeah.”

Natalie Alyn Lind: “It’s actually revealed in the trailer. That’s the only reason I can say that. Doing interviews like this is extremely difficult because I don’t want to get in trouble. (Laughing) I want to keep my job.”

I’d imagine standing up to a bully feels terrific. But when you have these powers is it sort of damned if you, damned if you don’t?

Percy Hynes White: “Yeah. It’s very easy for it to escalate out of control and for the revenge to turn into something that’s like… It just turns into my fault.”

Natalie Alyn Lind: “Especially when you don’t know how to use your powers.”

Percy Hynes White: “Totally. Andy can’t control it, especially at first. I think once he learns to control his powers, he’s going to make better decisions on how to use them.”

Natalie Alyn Lind: “Or bad decisions and take down the entire world.”

Percy Hynes White: “You never know.”

What was it like working with Bryan Singer?

Percy Hynes White: “Cool. He’s a cool guy.”

Natalie Alyn Lind: “I think it’s really cool because he has such an eye, and he’s obviously such a part of the X-Men universe and understands it better than anyone. Him and Derek (Hoffman) and Lauren (Shuler Donner) – they’re all a part of this universe. This is what they’ve been in for years. So really bringing their eye into our pilot is incredible because everything you see, it’s very similar to the movies but we have our own spin on it. It’s different but you still have that comic book eye, that comic book feel to it. It’s really cool.”

How intense are the action scenes for you?

Natalie Alyn Lind: “I think one of the cool parts about our show is that lot of the stuff that you see on screen, like for the first episode, we never once used a stunt double for any of us, I think. I know I didn’t have a stunt double.”

Percy Hynes White: “I almost popped a vessel in my eye, I had to do so much screaming. My power is screaming. I have to go, ‘Ahhhhhhhhhh!’”

Natalie Alyn Lind: “For the last two months I’ve been in stunt training. One of the first things I told Matt (Nix), our showrunner, is that I want to be able to do as much as I can. I’ve been in stunt training the last two months just trying to…”

Percy Hynes White: “I’ve been in couch training the last two months.”

Do you know what the differences are between your television characters and the comics?

Natalie Alyn Lind: “We are a family of secrets and we cannot reveal anything. […] As the series continues, our characters will develop. If you are a fan of the comics, the Struckers do exist. I’m not going to say that they don’t. If we have any association with them…maybe, maybe not. You’ll just have to watch the series and find out.”

Production is now underway on Focus Features’ period drama Mary, Queen of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn, Hanna) in the title role and Margot Robbie (The Legend of Tarzan, Suicide Squad) as Queen Elizabeth I. Focus Features just released the first official photo of Ronan in character as shooting begins in England and Scotland. The Working Title Films production is directed by Josie Rourke who’s making her feature film directorial debut with Mary, Queen of Scots.

Oscar nominee Beau Willimon (The Ides of March) adapted John Guy’s biography My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots for the screen. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Debra Hayward are on board as producers. Alexandra Byrne is the costume designer, Jenny Shircore is the make-up and hair designer, Chris Dickens will edit the drama, James Merifield is the film’s production designer, and John Mathieson is the director of photography.

“We are privileged to be collaborating with our partners at Working Title on this stellar production, and with Josie as she makes the exciting move from stage to screen work. With two of today’s most vital actresses bringing to life two female titans, Mary, Queen of Scots will be one of the movie events of 2018,” stated Focus chairman Peter Kujawski.

The Mary, Queen of Scots cast also includes Jack Lowden (Dunkirk), Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk), Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen), Brendan Coyle (Me Before You), David Tennant (Doctor Who), and Guy Pearce (Memento).

The Plot: Mary, Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth 1. Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 2: Duffer Brothers Interview on ’80s References and the Halloween Theme

Netflix’s critically acclaimed, award-winning Stranger Things returns for a second season on October 27, 2017 and in support of the show’s upcoming season, the cast and series creators/writers/directors Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer participated in a panel at the San Diego Comic Con. In addition to attempting a spoiler-free discussion with fans in a jam-packed hall at the San Diego Convention Center, the cast and the Duffer brothers hit the red carpet to talk about what’s in store when season two is available for a weekend of binge-watching this October.

Where does season two pick up?

Ross Duffer: “It’s about a year later.”

Matt Duffer: “A few days before Halloween.”

Ross Duffer: “Right before Halloween. You know, our characters are trying to go about their lives trying to pretend everything’s normal when of course it’s not. They had this very traumatic experience and we start to see how that continues to affect them moving forward.”

When you picked Halloween to start, was Netflix on board with having you premiere in October?

Matt Duffer: “Well, we looked at the date, like when could we realistically finish this? There was going to be a lot of visual effects. We know the speed at which we tend to work and write. It looked like we could realistically finish around Halloween. That seemed like a real date. And then we thought that’s great, we’ll set it around Halloween and make it kind of a thematic thing. I think Halloween is perfect for the show. I love Halloween. We got to dress all of our kids up. We had to decide what that was. Very quickly we thought they’ve got to all be Ghostbusters.”

You must have had a lot of ‘80s references you couldn’t fit into the first season. How many of those did you get into the second?

Ross Duffer: “It’s hard. When we’re breaking it we’re not like, ‘What can we reference this scene?’ It’s more like capturing the spirit of what those movies made us feel like when we were growing up. But, listen, ’84 which is when this takes place was a great year. A lot of great movies came out, whether it’s Ghostbusters or Temple of Doom or Karate Kid or Gremlins, so you’ll see some of that. Obviously, Ghostbusters but some of the other stuff plays a role in this season.”

Does it really scratch an itch to be able to write these ‘80s references into the show and have your production designers find them and build them?

Matt Duffer: “It is scratching a lot of itches. I mean, it was like last year we got our bike chase out of the way. This year we’ve got a big supernatural Close Encounters storm. So, we’re getting to do this stuff. It’s a lot of fun.”

Do these kids want to have another adventure?

Matt Duffer: “At this point, no. In the story, no, they’re not looking for another adventure. At this point they want to just be regular kids.”

Ross Duffer: “They want to play Dungeons and Dragons and whatever, watch movies and have a normal childhood. But, of course, that’s not the case.”

So when something happens again, how doubly traumatic is that?

Matt Duffer: “Doubly traumatic.”

Ross Duffer: “By the end of this, they’re going to be really messed up.”

Matt Duffer: “Yeah. It’s not like it was fun and games last year. It gets very scary and very real, quickly.”

In a way are they better equipped for this adventure because they know what’s possible?

Matt Duffer: “Yes, they are better equipped. That’s right. Which is good because it’s a lot more dangerous, what they’re up against.”

‘Supergirl’ Season 3: Odette Annable Interview on Playing Reign

Supergirl villain Odette Annable

Odette Annable (Pure Genius) joins the cast of The CW’s Supergirl season three as the season’s major villain, Reign. Annable made the trek to the 2017 San Diego Comic Con along with the cast of Supergirl, and she did her best to not give away anything that could be considered a major spoiler while participating in roundtable interviews at the sold-out Comic Con.

Supergirl season three will premiere on October 9, 2017.

What can you tell us about Reign?

Odette Annable: “Well, I can’t say much because rule number one, I don’t want to get fired right away and I just started. But, what I can say is that she is one of five Worldkillers. She was bioengineered in a lab from Krypton, just like Kara and Clark. But, her motives are much different than any of the other villains that we’ve seen on Supergirl season one and season two. She’s not out to kill everybody. She’s not out to rule the Earth like other villains have. She has a very specific agenda and her story is really quite heartbreaking. It will be, at least. So, that’s the spoiler that I’ll give. Not really a spoiler, but…”

What about her makes her a worthy opponent to Supergirl?

Odette Annable: “I think – and I hope I’m not speaking out of turn when I say this – but I think they have very similar powers, so in that way. Also, she’s one of five Worldkillers. She’s going to be, I think, Kara’s greatest match so far.”

Is it fun to play the villain?

Odette Annable: “It’s always fun to play the bad girl. Absolutely, yes.”

Do you have a cool costume?

Odette Annable: “I can’t say much about my costume but I will say it’s pretty kick ass, from what I know. I haven’t seen it yet but it’s going to be really, really special.”

How much have you dipped into the comics in creating the character for yourself?

Odette Annable: “I watched – I’m almost finished with season one. I have a baby; I have a two-year-old so that sort of takes up most of my time and I have to prioritize. When I put her down, I’m ready to go to bed. So, I’m in Vancouver right now diving into Supergirl, not only the TV show but sort of everything that surrounds it which is fun. I’m a fan of the genre, but I don’t know much about it.”

Your husband worked with executive producer Greg Berlanti on Brothers & Sisters. Any chance he’ll join you on Supergirl?

Odette Annable: “Oh my gosh, I don’t know. That would be awesome!”

Who should he play?

Odette Annable: “He should kill my character. That would be awesome! Actually, I should kill him. That would work better. No, Greg really does create a sense of family. I worked on Brothers & Sisters for five episodes. Dave and I were almost about to get married and they brought in a new character for Justin to play, and they asked me if I could do it. That’s just a testament to Greg and how he likes to keep it in the family. Working on this show now is really special because it feels like it’s come full circle. And to be given this opportunity, I feel really grateful. These guys are so amazing. You can tell that they’re a very tight knit group and they welcomed me right away. It’s going to be a fun season. I think it’s going to be much different than what we’ve seen so far on Supergirl in a really great way.”
