‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Episode 6: Behind the Scenes Video of the Frozen Lake

The 13 minute behind-the-scenes featurette from HBO’s Game of Thrones showcases how the frozen lake scene was shot in season seven episode six titled ‘Beyond the Wall.’ In the lengthy video, series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss talk about the complex staging of the scene, the choreography, shooting in the ice and snow, and how the characters who accompanied Jon Snow (Kit Harington) were chosen.

“Our story is seven guys on a rock being attacked by wights and trying to tell a clear story of your task is to defend the perimeter and as you lose, your perimeter is going to fall back and fall back. ‘How do you hold order against pure chaos?’ It’s herding kittens,” said episode director Alan Taylor explains staging the battle in the middle of the lake. “You can’t see anything except people whacking each other. It takes some effort to talk to the cast and say, ‘No, the story is here’s the line and we have to show that it’s not being broken, or that it is being broken.'”

D.B. Weiss admits that even though he was a writer on the episode, he watched it and thought Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) was going to die. “Somehow he managed to override my rational brain and make me think Tormund was going to die.”

David Benioff says there’s nothing like shooting on location, if at all possible. “Iceland exists and it’s real and it’s cold as hell. It’s beautiful and there’s just nothing like having that reality on screen,” explained Benioff.

“There’s an extent to which nothing ever surprises you on this job anymore. But this…you still can’t help but be impressed by this. It’s nuts,” said Joe Dempsie who plays Robert Baratheon’s illegitimate son, Gendry.

As for that undead polar bear, Weiss and Benioff revealed the visual effects team was not in the least bit happy about having to create it. “What we had to go through to get the zombie polar bear was writing the zombie polar bear into every season of the show for about four seasons,” said Weiss. Benioff added, “We thought they’d be so excited to do a zombie bear, and it was kind of like, ‘Oh my god, they’re serious about doing this f*cking bear.'”

“Only to have Bernie and the visual effects guys tell us in the nicest possible way, ‘F*ck you. We cannot afford a zombie polar bear,'” said Weiss. “This year made perfect sense that you could have one of these things out there. We really put our four feet down and we said, ‘Goddammit, we want a zombie polar bear.'”

The behind-the-scenes video shows how the scene was shot in multiple locations in Iceland and Belfast, and how the massive frozen lake was staged and the ice was created. 3,500 bags of snow were used to cover the cliffs surrounding the fake lake. “It’s a really cool set,” said Kit Harington. “It’s an amazing set. They cemented a whole quarry to flatten out to make it look like an ice lake.”

“The amount of workmanship is incredible,” added Rory McCann (‘The Hound’). “We’ve had to run across that ice and it just looks so real. It’s fantastic.”

The 13 minute video also reveals how the dragon rescue scene was shot, footage of Emilia Clarke riding Drogon, and burning the wights with the dragon’s fire.

‘The Flash’ Season 4: Todd Helbing Interview on Team Flash and Barry’s Return from the Speed Force

Executive producer Todd Helbing promises the fourth season of The CW’s The Flash will return the series to a lighter tone after what he admits was the show’s darkest season with season three. Helbing and The Flash cast, including Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Candice Patton, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Carlos Valdes, and Keiynan Lonsdale, discussed the upcoming fourth season while at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con, participating in a panel crowded with fans and in a slightly quieter press room for roundtable interviews. During our interview, Helbing also talked about the season four villain: The Thinker.

How much time is Barry going to be spending in the Speed Force? Will you be bringing him back quickly?

Todd Helbing: “When we pick up the season it’s six months later, so he’ll have been in there at least six months. But, I can’t really reveal that yet – but he’s The Flash and the show is The Flash so we want to get The Flash back on the show.”

Will we see him inside the Speed Force or will it start with his return from the Speed Force?

Todd Helbing: “I can’t really go into that. It’s just really tied into how he escapes.”

What can you say about the season’s crossovers?

Todd Helbing: “The only thing really is this year it’s going to be a true four-parter that will start on Supergirl. It’s not going to start on the last scene this time; it’s going to be a true four-parter. You know, we’re kicking around ideas of what the story is going to be.”

Will Team Flash be still as strong as when Barry left or have they faltered in his absence?

Todd Helbing: “They’ve been doing the best they can. Everybody has sort of stepped up. Iris has taken the mantle as team leader. Vibe and Kid Flash have stepped up and they’re the resident superheroes that are taking on all the villains and they’re working really closely with Joe. Everybody has come together to pick up the slack.”

Last year you had the musical crossover. Is there something unusual you’re planning for this year?

Todd Helbing: “We love to get these guys singing anytime we can. Our cast is so tremendously talented. But I think as far as a full musical this year… One thing is we do the crossovers every year, that’s a big thing – a big event. We want to keep the specialness of the musical so if you start to do these things every year, they’re not going to seem special, I think. But if we can get these guys singing, we’ll do it.”

Can you talk a little bit about the big picture and the tone of the season?

Todd Helbing: “So, last year the show got pretty dark. Showing what happened to Iris in the future and maintaining that suspense and that build up, it became difficult to do. And it was also so dark and that’s about as dark as we ever want the show to go. So, we really are concentrating on lightening it up a little bit – or a lot. I think the first couple scripts especially are unbelievably funny. We’ve a lot of funny people on our writing staff and so it’s all working great. And to see the cast and the characters light this year is a lot of fun. It’s probably the most close to season one that we’ve been, for sure.”

Will the Caitlin/Killer Frost storyline be totally separate from the rest of the team?

Todd Helbing: “No. I mean all I can say about that is that if you’re a fan of Caitlin Snow, you’re going to be very happy with this season. And if you’re a fan of Killer Frost, you’re going to be very happy with this season.”

Is Tom Felton coming back?

Todd Helbing: “No, he is unfortunately not coming back.”

Can you talk about the new villain?

Todd Helbing: “Yeah, it’s The Thinker. Last year we said his name twice, Clifford DeVoe. And he is the smartest guy on the planet. You know, the phrase we keep saying is that it’s the fastest man alive versus the fastest brain.

It’s a lot of fun. This season in particular we’ve planned out a lot of the moves and it’s really because when you’re dealing with somebody as smart as this guy, to figure out his plan has been a lot of fun but it’s not something that we can just do on the fly. So, we have all the major goalposts that we’re going to hit. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Is there anything ambitious to pull off in season four in the way that you pulled off Grodd or King Shark?

Todd Helbing: “Yeah. I mean, look, I don’t know if we’re going to be going to Gorilla City again. I think that stretched the capacity for what we can do on a television budget. But anytime we can have Grodd, and King Shark to me is my personal favorite villain, so I don’t know. I don’t want to tell you guys something that doesn’t end up happening but I’m personally going to push very hard to get King Shark and Grodd together.”

Logan Lucky wasn’t so lucky at the box office, ringing up just $8 million domestically while opening in 3,000+ theaters. The disappointing box office take was only enough to snag a third place finish for the caper comedy from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig. The slow end-of-the-summer weekend found The Hitman’s Bodyguard with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson taking the top spot despite earning mostly negative reviews from critics. The Hitman’s Bodyguard sits at 39% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes while Logan Lucky, ignored by audiences, generated overwhelmingly positive reviews and has a 93% fresh rating.

With no real major releases opening over the August 25-27, 2017 weekend, expect the box office numbers to plummet to the lowest of the year. Fortunately, Warner Bros. Pictures’ It will revive the box office when it arrives in theaters on September 8th.

‘Dirk Gently’s Season 2: Hannah Marks and Jade Eshete Interview on Dirk’s Narnia

BBC America’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency stars Hannah Marks and Jade Eshete say the second season of the entertaining and more-than-occasionally bizarre series will feature fantastical characters and storylines never before explored on television. Hannah Marks (‘Amanda Brotzman’) and Jade Eshete (‘Farah Black’) were paired up to discuss the show’s much anticipated second season at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con and while they didn’t give away anything that could be considered a spoiler, Marks and Eshete did talk about what fans of Dirk Gently’s can look forward to when season two premieres this fall.

This is quirkiest show on television

Hannah Marks: “Oh, you just wait!”

It must be incredible getting those scripts. What was it like each time you read a new one?

Hannah Marks: “I had to read them probably three times every time we got a new script because I wanted to make sure I was understanding everything that was happening. Max (Landis) is so complex and layered in his writing, and it’s an honor to get to do his material. But, you definitely have to read it a few times.”

Jade Eshete: “Yeah, I just finished reading the last episode of this season…”

Hannah Marks: “I haven’t ready it yet – no spoilers!”

Jade Eshete: “I won’t do it! But, what I will say about reading the scripts is there were times I literally had to stop myself. I would see things as I’m turning a page, I would see something on the next page and go, ‘No! Wait, wait, wait, stop, slow down. You’re only on this page, don’t…’ You always feel the need to jump ahead because it’s so exciting.”

Hannah Marks: “Also, Max writes with this giant font, so it’s like…this is a bad example…but, ‘The person is human SHISH KABOBED,’ or whatever.”

Jade Eshete: “Shish Kabob is in a huge font.”

Hannah Marks: “So, you have to scroll ahead. It’s really thrilling reading the scripts.”

You can’t tease anything about the next season?

Jade Eshete: “We can talk about certain things in the next season.”

Can you talk in abstract terms about what the most bizarre, quirky thing you found yourself doing in season two was?

Hannah Marks: “I can’t. Everything in my storyline is a spoiler, but I’ll talk around it. I have a scene partner who also has an actress who plays her hands. And one of the actresses that played one of her hands missed her flight, so I’ve been shooting with a character who has one hand. Just for an example of the type of world that we’re working in right now. Super unique and always with a new kind of creature or character this year.”

Jade Eshete: “Yeah for me, I’ve got to talk around it, sorry, there was one scene where it’s a huge amount of people, the largest amount of people that I think we’ve ever worked with on Dirk Gently. The things that transpire within this group of people are pretty gnarly. That’s the only thing that I can say. The things that happen there and how it ends are kind of I would never have thought that I would be doing those things. (Laughing) It makes no sense to you, I’m so sorry.”

Hannah Marks: “Yeah, it’s stuff I’ve never seen on a television show before, especially the fact that we go to this world called Wendimore. That’s the main thing that we can talk about which is basically Dirk Gently’s Narnia. Totally magical land with fantasy creatures, which is not something that we had last year at all.”

Jade Eshete: “Exactly. Last season was kind of more the body-swapping, time travel. This season it’s more magic, fantasy.”

Hannah Marks: “We change genres completely.”

Dirk Gently is a hard show to explain. How do you describe it to anyone who hasn’t caught onto the series yet?

Jade Eshete: “I would say what Dirk means for me… I thought about it this morning. If I wasn’t on this show, would I watch this show? Is it a show that I would necessarily tune into? I think about my friends who run the gamut, actors, non-actors, whatever, and now that it launched today on Hulu, all my friends are like, ‘I’m watching it on Hulu! It’s so awesome!’

They’re all from all different walks of life, loving the show. They’re seeing what I saw from that first pilot episode was Dirk, I think, gives people the permission to celebrate their weirdness, celebrate their oddities. These are things that I think we try to hide and not really embrace. And so, I think Dirk pretty much showcases that stuff and says here are all these weirdos and they’re the leads of this show – and they’re amazing. I think it gives them this confidence. I don’t know. I feel like people are really empowered after watching Dirk. So, that’s what I would say for people who haven’t really seen it as yet, that’s what they will really connect with because that’s what I did.”

Hannah Marks: “Yeah, like Jade said. We just watched a YouTube video that this fan made that said, ‘All the lead characters on Dirk Gently are losers and I love it!’ That’s really cool that we are totally the outcasts. We would normally be the side characters on any other show, but in this show we get to save the day. And in very broad ways, everyone is very imperfect.

But beyond that, the show has made me grow as a person and discover new things about myself. I hope anyone watching it will also see that. Beyond that, I do think we are the weirdest show on television – especially second season. I can’t even tell you how…I wish I could tell you. So, if you want to watch something that’s truly different and original and subverting all the tropes that you would normally see, then I think this is the show.”

Jade Eshete: “And I think too something that’s really exciting about season two is that we’ve got so many new characters coming into the mix, and the same way that you fell in love with the characters that were introduced in season one, their storylines and characters are so interesting that you immediately are immersed.”

Hannah Marks: “The show has so much heart, too. So much heart.”

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Episode 6 Recap: Beyond the Wall

HBO’s Game of Thrones season seven episode six picks up with the unlikely group of allies on the hunt to retrieve a White Walker beyond the Wall. Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) is happy to be back in the snow, saying that Winterfell smelled like pig sh*t in comparison. Gendry (Joe Dempsie) has never seen the snow and is a bit freaked out by this icy land. As they walk, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Tormund discuss Daenerys and how she wants him to bend the knee, and Tormund reminds Jon how many people died for Mance Ryder because he wouldn’t swallow his pride and bend the knee.

Gendry is still mad at the Brotherhood for selling him to the Red Witch, and he tells them about being stripped naked and having leeches placed on him. The Hound (Rory McCann) advises him to stop whinging (complaining) because he’s still alive.

Next it’s Jon Snow and Jorah Mormont’s turn for a brief heart-to-heart. They discuss Lord Commander Mormont and Jon’s assures Jorah his father’s death was avenged. Jon Snow recalls that his own father was the most honorable man he knew and he died on the executioner’s block. Jorah (Iain Glen) reminds Jon that Ned Stark wanted to execute him, and Jon’s happy his father didn’t catch Jorah and fulfill the death sentence. Jon then turns over Longclaw, the sword given to him by the Lord Commander, believing it rightfully belongs to Jorah. But, Jorah thinks since he broke his father’s heart by bringing shame on the Mormonts, he doesn’t deserve the sword. He returns it to Jon Snow since the Lord Commander wanted him to have it.

Back at Winterfell, Arya (Maisie Williams) and Sansa (Sophie Turner) have a quiet talk about their father and Arya recalls him watching the boys shoot arrows at each other. Arya picked up a bow left behind and repeatedly shot the same arrow until she hit the target. When she finally hit the bullseye, she heard her father clap. At that moment she realized that although the rules forbade it, she was doing what she was meant to be doing and her father knew it.

Arya surprises Sansa by insisting their father was killed by the Lannisters with Sansa’s help. “What?!” replies Sansa as Arya hands her the note telling her family to bend the knee to King Joffrey. Arya recites what it said, reminding Sansa that she wrote their father committed treason and conspired against “her beloved” Joffrey. In the note, Sansa begged their brother Robb to come to King’s Landing and swear loyalty.

Sansa claims she was forced to write the letter, but Arya doesn’t let her off the hook. Arya asks if she was tortured into penning the note and Sansa replies that Arya doesn’t understand what happened. Sansa blames it on just being a child at the time, but Arya can’t believe her sister was stupid enough to believe the Lannisters. Arya remembers everything about the day their father lost his head, revealing she was standing in the crowd and watched a beautifully coiffed Sansa betray their family. Sansa points out Arya did nothing to stop their father’s beheading, and Arya replies that she didn’t betray the family for her “beloved Joffrey.”

Sansa, now angry, tells Arya she should be thanking her for saving Winterfell. Arya reveals she was training at the time, and Sansa says she was suffering unimaginable things while Arya was “training.” Sansa wants to know what Arya plans to do with the note, and Arya says she hasn’t decided. Arya realizes Sansa’s scared of what would happen if its contents got out. Arya quickly connects the dots and understands Sansa’s fearful of the Northerners turning their back on her and of losing their respect. Sansa tells her little sister this infighting is exactly what Cersei wants them to do.

Past the Wall, Jon Snow’s group continues to pick at each other. The Hound tells Tormund he hates gingers, not wildlings, as they get on each other’s nerves. Tormund repeatedly asks The Hound about being burned in a fire, but then stops when he decides The Hound has sad eyes. Tormund changes the subject and talks about the woman he has waiting for him at Winterfell: Brienne of Tarth. Of course, that’s the person who tried to kill The Hound. Tormund wants to make babies with Brienne while The Hound wonders how Tormund has managed to live this long. “I’m good at killing people,” replies Tormund.

Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) asks Jon Snow about being resurrected by the Red Witch. Beric was brought back to life six times by Thoros (Paul Kaye), yet Jon Snow refuses to believe the Lord of Light was responsible for his resurrection. Jon doesn’t understand why you’d serve a god who doesn’t tell you what he wants. Beric admits he’s fighting for life. “Death is the enemy. The first enemy and the last,” explains Beric. “The enemy always wins, but we still need to fight him.” Beric expresses his belief that he and Jon Snow need to defend those who can’t. That’s their purpose.

The Hound points out a mountain not far ahead that looks like an arrowhead and says that’s what he saw in the fire.

At Dragonstone, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) tells Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) she likes him because he’s not a hero because heroes do stupid things and die. She lists off Drogo, Jorah, Daario, and Jon Snow, and Tyrion points out they all fell in love with her. That shocks Daenerys because she doesn’t believe Jon Snow loves her. She says he’s too little for her, then apologizes to Tyrion the dwarf for that comment.

Daenerys and Tyrion discuss her potential meeting with Cersei, and Tyrion wants her to bring her dragons because he’s sure Cersei’s laying traps. Tyrion advises Daenerys she must inspire fear, but she also has to be different than other Kings and Queens. Jaime promised to keep a grip on the Lannister forces, and Tyrion promised he’d keep her from doing anything impulsive. Tyrion then warns her Cersei will try to provoke her into action and she needs to keep her head about her. He then provokes her anger when he suggests that after she breaks the wheel, they need to make sure it remains broken. Since she can’t have children, they need to figure out who will sit on the Iron Throne after she dies. Daenerys is livid he’s planning for after her death and refuses to discuss succession until she wears the crown.

Once more to Jon Snow’s men we go and we find them struggling through a blizzard. Tormund points out a bear up ahead and it looks enormous. It has blue eyes and charges them, and one of the men who walked ahead is immediately attacked and killed. The remaining men form a circle, swords drawn. The snow thickens and once more the polar bear attacks. More men are bitten as Beric’s sword bursts into flames and he stabs the bear. The Hound stands in front of it, frozen in place as the other men attack. (The Hound can’t approach because the bear is on fire.) He watches as men are bitten and Thoros is badly wounded. Beric uses his flaming sword to catharize Thoros’ wound and he’s able to continue. However, they’ve lost one man.

Sansa meets in secret with Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) and he insists he has no idea where Arya got the note. Sansa’s concerned the note will make the Northerners abandon them, if it gets out. Littlefinger says the men right now are ready to trust her, but Sansa knows they’ll desert the Starks if the contents of the note are revealed. She’s worried Arya will release the note because Arya thinks her sister might betray Jon Snow. Littlefinger suggests Lady Brienne can help with the problem since she’s sworn to protect the sisters. If Arya is planning to harm Sansa, she would have to intercede.

Out in the snow, Jorah and Thoros talk about Thoros charging through the breach on Pyke years ago. Jorah thought he was incredibly brave, but Thoros says he was just incredibly drunk. Tormund halts the group as they spot a small group of White Walkers. The men follow the group to a river and then attack. Jon Snow slices the leader and the remainder, save one, die. The surviving wight screams as they attempt to bind him, and around them the snowy mountains rumble. They hear the sound of many feet heading their way and Jon Snow quickly sends Gendry back to Eastwatch to dispatch a raven to Daenerys. The group race over a frozen lake as the ice cracks under their feet. They turn to see the army of White Walkers heading their way. Most make it to safety on a small island in the middle of the lake as the ice cracks and swallows many of the White Walkers. The rest of the wights pause and stand in a large circle at the edge of the ice, surrounding the lake.

Gendry, hammerless after handing it over to Tormund in order to run faster, sprints to the Wall.

Jon Snow’s now slightly smaller group stands on the island in the freezing cold while the White Walkers wait on the lake’s edge.

Gendry falls down in exhaustion outside the gate. He’s rescued by Sir Davos (Liam Cunningham) and barely manages to get out that he’s been instructed by Jon Snow to send a raven to Daenerys.

The cast of Netflix’s bingeworthy series Stranger Things made the trek to San Diego for the 2017 Comic Con, taking questions from fans during a packed panel and then stepping onto the red carpet for brief interviews. Stranger ThingsNatalia Dyer stopped to chat about reprising her role as Nancy Wheeler in the much-anticipated second season which is set to premiere on October 27, 2017.

Where is Nancy when season two picks up?

Natalia Dyer: “So, it’s a year later and Nancy is coping with everything that has happened and trying to piece together a sense of normalcy. But, there’s really no way to go back from what happened and so you just have to go forward and figure out what you’re going to do about it.”

How will Nancy live a normal teenage life after experiencing the supernatural?

Natalia Dyer: “Right? That’s exactly it. Being in a small town and not being able to really talk about things that happened, it’s very constricting and confining. I think this season we realize that you can’t really go back. There’s no going back to normalcy after that.”

Do you enter season two with more comfort or more pressure because of what season one delivered?

Natalia Dyer: “I think there’s an element of pressure because we had no idea exactly what the response would be to season one. It was so big and so great that you just hope you kind of live up to the hype in a way. But I also have safety in that I have a lot of trust in the (Duffer) brothers team and in the cast for delivering something great. I think it’s great, but you never know.”

How has your life changed since season one premiered?

Natalia Dyer: “It’s crazy. It’s been a very whirlwind kind of a year, and it’s been amazing and exciting and scary. New crazy things happening all the time, just trying to live in the moment. Trying to take it in.”

Do you have any plans when season two premieres to follow along with people watching it?

Natalia Dyer: “Yeah, I dip into social media a little bit. Honestly, I’m as excited as anybody to see it, to see what happens.”

Watch the full Natalia Dyer Stranger Things interview:

Stranger Things 2: It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the Demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and James Corden Perform ‘Crosswalk the Musical: Hair’

Lin-Manuel Miranda joined James Corden for a special Crosswalk the Musical: Hair performance on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles. “It’s one thing on a stage, air-conditioning, Broadway lights. It’s another thing when people are shouting obscenities out of a window at you because they don’t get it,” said Corden of Miranda’s big Crosswalk the Musical debut.

With cars passing by, Miranda broke into “Aquarius” with the backing of James Corden and his Crosswalk performers. That went over well, with Miranda enthusiastically proclaiming this was the best thing he’d ever done. “When it’s a red light for the cars, it’s a green light for my soul,” said Miranda.

Next up was a peppy performance of “Hair” complete with psychedelic backdrops. However, neither “Hair” nor “Aquarius” were able to top Crosswalk the Musical: Hair‘s rendition of “Let the Sunshine In.”

“In the original production of Hair, the entire cast got naked. But both CBS and the entire state of California have told us we can’t be nude in a crosswalk. Then again, people told me that Alexander Hamilton wasn’t a Puerto Rican rapper with beautiful brown eyes,” explained Miranda before taking to the streets one more time. Joining James Corden to duet on “Let the Sunshine In,” Miranda and Corden stripped off their coats to reveal pretty much everything. Private parts blurred, they belted out the classic tune, with James Corden dancing through the cars and Lin-Manuel Miranda naked and gyrating on a car’s hood.

“I’ve never felt so free!” screamed Miranda on the sidewalk, surrounded by his fellow Crosswalk the Musical cast members.

The nine-minute video ended with Miranda and Corden giddy about the performance. “After performing out here in front of all those cars, I don’t know how you’d go back to Broadway. Everything else is boring,” said Miranda. Corden replied, “He gets it, you know? He gets it,” before linking arms with an equally nude Miranda and walking away with his new naked best friend.

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Season 3: Tala Ashe Interview on Playing Zari and Joining ‘Legends’

Tala Ashe will be an important part of the mix when The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns for its third season on October 10, 2017. Ashe joins the cast as Zari and during roundtable interviews at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con, she talked about how her character will interact with the Legends and how she’s approaching the role.

How is Zari introduced into Legends of Tomorrow?

Tala Ashe: “She’s from the future; she’s from 2030. She’s going to meet the Legends in 2030. She’s a woman who speaks her mind. She’s powerful. She’s a hacker activist. She’s sort of seen the fallout from events that started in 2017, the rise of populism, the refugee crisis. She’s encountered and experienced this very bleak future. So, she feels that the Legends should not just fix history, they should improve history. They don’t exactly see eye-to-eye at the beginning. The journey of the season is going to be how she becomes a part of the team.”

How is she going to interact with Nate, since he’s a historian and is all about preserving history?

Tala Ashe: “That’s a good question. I don’t know exactly about Nate, but that would make sense. I think she’s going to butt heads with a lot of the Legends. I know that she and Ray are going to have… Again, I think they’re philosophically different. Zari is not a glass half empty (person), but definitely Ray is a glass half full type. So, I think she’s really going to challenge the Legends. At the end of last season there was a little bit of like, ‘We did it!’ for like a second. And then usually someone, in this case me, is like, ‘Actually, the future is terrible. You guys did not fix everything.’ So, yeah, she’s going to be challenging to them and then ultimately part of the team, which will be interesting to watch happen.”

With all the characters they could have brought into the show, do you feel the choice of bringing Zari is because of the times that we live in?

Tala Ashe: “I can’t speak for Phil (Klemmer) or Marc (Guggenheim), and I will say that we have decided to leave the name of Isis behind because it seemed like the sensible thing to do in our current climate. And, of course, the character will be informed by that. I think it’s a really amazing opportunity. I really commend Phil and Marc for choosing to bring in a character like this who is just like us. I think normalizing a Muslim American character, a character who is just as American as she is Muslim, I think that’s really a powerful thing to do right now on television and in the media.”

Will Zari be warning the Legends about not going back in time to periods that were bad for her?

Tala Ashe: “I wonder. I think her being Muslim American is a part of the many things that she is, the tapestry of who she is. I’ll be interested to see (what happens). I don’t know how it’s going to play into it. It’s going to be interesting to see what time periods are challenging for her.”

Did you delve into the comic book history of Zari/Isis or because you’ve left the name Isis behind, do you feel freer in leaving a lot of the stuff that exists behind?

Tala Ashe: “What I think is so cool about what the whole Arrowverse has done is because they have time to develop these characters, the characters can become a real thing. And so I’m sort of planning to take what is helpful to me in creating my version of Zari, and I think Marc and Phil are doing a similar thing. I’m excited to see what we come up with for the Legends version of Zari. But, yeah, I’m doing as much research as feels sort of helpful and not hurtful.”

Since the character is from the future, have you thought about what it will be like in that time for Zari?

Tala Ashe: “Gosh, it’s a little scary to think about, and from what I know it’s not a great future. Yeah, I have been thinking about it. Without getting too dark, I’ve sort of been exploring in my imagination what’s sort of the worst version of where we’re headed, you know? As hard as that is to imagine and scary to imagine, I think it’s going to be helpful for my work. I should think more about that, even.”
