‘Preacher’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: Dallas

AMC’s Preacher season two episode four ended with Jesse (Dominic Cooper) learning Viktor, the man he was in the middle of choking, is Tulip’s husband. Episode five begins exactly where four left off, with Jesse in the middle of a rage-fueled freak-out after learning Tulip’s huge secret. Tulip (Ruth Negga) attempts to explain she was trying to get a divorce, but Jesse just can’t seem to stop attacking Viktor (Paul Ben-Victor). Tulip reminds him they split up after Dallas and as she tries to get Jesse to calm down, she notices all of Viktor’s men have been frozen.

Jesse hauls Viktor down to the torture room and replaces the strung-up dead body with Viktor’s live but unconscious one. Jesse hasn’t said a word while Tulip won’t stop talking, begging him to stop. Jesse finally uses the voice to command Tulip to leave.

A flashback shows Tulip and Jesse in Dallas during a heist gone wrong. It also reveals she’s worried about the baby as she clutches her stomach.

Flash-forward three months after the flashback and Jesse’s a couch potato, drinking beer, watching TV, and hanging out with his buddy, Reggie. Tulip arrives home, dressed up from work, and reminds Jesse they have a guest coming for dinner. She kicks Reggie out and in a blunt yet friendly tone, Tulip suggests Jesse – who looks frumpy – take a shower because he stinks.

Over dinner, Tulip explains to her friend Dani she’s training to be a realtor and Jesse’s bartending. Dani’s not impressed and asks when they’re coming back to work for her. She has an insurance scam she’d like them to handle or maybe they can kill her husband. Tulip reminds her they’ve already made it clear they won’t do that, and they’re both committed to staying clean now. Dani hates Tulip’s cooking but loves how good they are at scams and other illegal activities. As Dani gets up to leave, Tulip asks if she’s heard any news on Carlos. Dani hasn’t.

After Dani leaves, Tulip and Jesse do a home pregnancy test. They exchange their “to the end of the world” promises and then the scene switches back to Viktor hanging in the torture room.

Meanwhile at Dennis’ house, Tulip introduces her stepdaughter, Allie (Stella Allen), to Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun). As Tulip makes dinner, Allie reveals to Cassidy she’s having a bad day because Jesse is currently at her house killing her father. Tulip, unconvincingly, says they’re just talking.

After sending Allie in to chat with Dennis, Tulip punches Cassidy in the face. She’s pissed he told Jesse where she was, but Cassidy explains he did it out of concern for her safety. However, Tulip thinks he had an ulterior motive and he admits he messed this one up.

Cassidy asks why Tulip married Viktor and she doesn’t want to talk about it. She claims it’ll be over between them if Jesse kills Viktor, so Cassidy heads out to clean up his mess.

Viktor confesses to Jesse that he always wondered what Tulip was hiding and now he’s figured it out. Calling Jesse an asshole, Viktor knows Jesse is the one who put Tulip through hell.

Another flashback shows Jesse buying beer and another pregnancy test which leads to negative results. A cycle of purchasing beer and tests followed by sex repeats for days on end until one night Jesse prays over the pregnancy test, asking God to let them be pregnant. It doesn’t work but they keep trying and Jesse and Tulip even attend church, thinking it will increase their chances of having a baby.

One day while hanging out on the couch, smoking and watching TV, Jesse and Reggie set off the smoke alarm. When Jesse turns it off, he discovers a plastic bag inside the air conditioning vent.

Tulip arrives home from her real estate job and quickly learns Jesse’s on to her. She only lasted three weeks selling real estate and has gone back to working for Dani without telling him. She hated her legitimate job and went back to the only thing she thinks she’s good at. They argue over what went down with Carlos at the heist three months prior and then Jesse whips out a package of birth control pills, pissed it’s another thing Tulip’s been lying about. She apologizes and says this life he wants feels wrong to her. She can’t go straight; she doesn’t know how to. Tulip asks if having a crap life and a crap job makes him one of the good guys and will earn him forgiveness for what he’s done. Jesse doesn’t respond and she pushes the insults further, telling him he’ll never be forgiven. Jesse takes out his anger on poor Reggie who opens his mouth at the wrong time. Jesse beats him senseless while Tulip looks on, disgusted.

The next day as Tulip’s preparing for her job with Dani, Jesse mentions his dad’s church is still in his name. It’s empty and it’s his, so he’s decided to go back to Annville and be a preacher. She wishes him luck and leaves.

Cassidy shows up at Viktor’s place where Viktor’s men are still frozen in place. He finds Jesse in Viktor’s bedroom and asks how he’s doing. Cassidy knows it’s been a long day, admitting he’s checked in and noticed Viktor’s still alive but hanging from the ceiling. He keeps up a running commentary, even revealing he was rich a long time ago and enjoyed it. Cassidy says Tulip fell in with Viktor after she had a falling out with Jesse – and that was it. “She doesn’t love him and she never did because she loves you, you stupid idiot,” says Cassidy in a very calm, soothing voice.

Jesse wonders why after all the lying Cassidy’s done, he’d ever trust him. Cassidy, doing a convincing job of acting ashamed, says he hated keeping secrets from his friend. In one of the most emotionally intense scenes of the series, Jesse realizes Cassidy’s there to talk him out of what he’s going to do and to be a hero. Cassidy claims he’s between a rock and a hard place, and Jesse asks him once again why he should trust a lying, junkie vampire who thinks everything’s a joke.

Cassidy agrees he’s a bastard and he tries to convince people of that, but if he was in Jesse’s situation he would have killed Viktor. He wouldn’t have been restrained at all and isn’t there to talk Jesse out of hurting Viktor. Cassidy says he’s with his friend, no matter what he decides to do.

Jesse believes Tulip would leave him if he killed Viktor, but Cassidy doesn’t think so.

After Cassidy takes off, Jesse heads back to the torture room. Jesse sharpens an axe while he explains he believes Tulip married Viktor because she wanted to be a criminal, have money, and enjoy this lifestyle. However, Viktor begs to differ. He thinks Tulip did it because Jesse’s an asshole and he was nice to her. “Just thought you should know,” says Viktor, egging Jesse on to kill him and get it over with since it’s too late to change his mind.

Jesse considers that for a brief moment and then swings the axe.

Cassidy returns to Dennis’ place and informs Tulip Viktor’s alive…for now. He doesn’t exactly lie when he says he told Jesse to do the right thing, and Tulip’s happy Jesse was listening to Cassidy. Just then Jesse arrives home and grabs a beer while glaring at Tulip and Cassidy. He reveals he took Viktor down, spilling this bit of news right as Viktor’s daughter walks in the room. Tulip sends her back out and says, “You son of a bitch!” to Jesse. Jesse doesn’t understand why Tulip’s upset and says once again, “I took him down.”

Tulip finally asks what he means and Jesse explains he cut the harness down from the ceiling and didn’t kill him. He also admits he wanted to kill him but instead he got the divorce papers. Tulip gives him a big kiss while Cassidy heads off to tell Allie her dad’s alive.

Jesse and Tulip admit they’re bad for each other.

A flashback shows Tulip and Viktor playing Monopoly, playfully arguing about the game. Viktor gives her a kiss on the head and says, “I married a hard woman, but I love her anyway.” Tulip smiles and thanks him, but doesn’t say she loves him back. After he leaves, she gets a call from Dani. Tulip declines her offer of employment, saying Viktor gives her plenty of work. She tells Dani she’s happy, but then her demeanor changes as Dani delivers the news that she found Carlos. Tulip asks if Jesse knows.

Viktor returns to finish the game but Tulip’s gone. Her drawers are pulled out and Viktor realizes she’s left him.

Returning to real-time, Viktor’s home and in his bedroom reading the newspaper. When the doorknob moves, he grabs his gun but it’s only Allie. She curls up with him and they read the paper, but that’s interrupted by a ruckus from downstairs. Gunshots are accompanied by screaming and then one of Viktor’s men falls through the bedroom door as Viktor tells his daughter to hide. Viktor fires at The Cowboy but of course, nothing happens. The Cowboy says, “Preacher,” and when Viktor doesn’t answer, he shoots him. The Cowboy finds Allie hiding in the closet and she saves herself by revealing she knows where he can find the preacher.

Oscar nominee Alec Baldwin (The Cooler) will star in NBC’s upcoming live production of A Few Good Men, signing on to play Col. Nathan Jessep in the 2018 live television event. Baldwin will also be involved as an executive producer along with Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, and Aaron Sorkin. A Few Good Men marks NBC’s first live production of a Broadway drama in more than five decades.

Aaron Sorkin wrote A Few Good Men in 1989 as a stage production which was made into an Oscar nominated feature film in 1992. Jack Nicholson earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role in the dramatic thriller, and the film also earned Best Picture, Best Editing, and Best Sound Academy Award nominations. Sorkin will be writing the teleplay for the NBC production.

“Alec Baldwin is the gift that keeps on giving at NBC, and we’re excited to have him starring in Aaron Sorkin’s towering work as we expand our live theater imprint beyond musicals,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “No stranger to live television, Alec is the most multi-faceted actor in the world and his range is incomparable. He will put his own inimitable stamp on the role of Col. Jessep in a play that is still as surprising and relevant as ever, from one of the most gifted writers working today.”

“Alec is one of our greatest actors. Having him play this role — live onstage for a television audience — is a dream come true. This will be a brand new take on Nathan Jessep and I expect that Alec is going to bust through TV screens and right into living rooms,” added Sorkin.

Baldwin was just nominated for two Emmys: one in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for portraying Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, and one for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for hosting Match Game.

The Plot: Set in 1986 and taking place in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, A Few Good Men centers on newbie military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee, who comes up against the formidable Col. Jessep when he is asked to defend three Marines on trial for murder. Tom Hulce (Amadeus) was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Kaffee on Broadway. The film adaptation starred Tom Cruise as Lt. Kaffee and Jack Nicholson as Col. Jessep.

Box Office Report: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Takes the Top Spot

War for the Planet of the Apes toppled Spider-Man: Homecoming from its short-term perch at the top of the box office chart. The final film of the new Planet of the Apes trilogy opened barely ahead of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ $54 million and $15 million behind 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but still posted respectable opening weekend numbers. War for the Planet of the Apes‘ $56 million was easily enough to knock Spidey out of first in its second weekend in theaters. The weekend’s other wide release, Wish Upon, couldn’t muster double digits in its first three days in release.

Ticket buyers awarded War for the Planet of the Apes starring Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson an A-, according to Cinemascore. Critics were equally as generous, with the third Apes movie currently sitting at 95% fresh (189 fresh, 11 rotten) on Rotten Tomatoes.

War for the Planet of the Apes may only reside in the #1 spot for a week as it faces stiff competition from Christopher Nolan’s latest film next weekend. Dunkirk, one of the best movies of the year, will open in theaters on July 21st as will Valerian and the City of a Thousands Planets and Girls Trip.

Box Office Top 10: July 7-9, 2017

  1. War for the Planet of the Apes – $56,500,000
  2. Spider-Man Homecoming – $45,200,000
  3. Despicable Me 3 – $18,947,740
  4. Baby Driver – $8,750,000
  5. The Big Sick – $7,600,000
  6. Wonder Woman – $6,885,000
  7. Wish Upon – $5,586,748
  8. Cars 3 – $3,167,000
  9. Transformers: The Last Knight – $2,780,000
  10. The House – $1,795,000

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Episode 1 Recap: Dragonstone

HBO’s Game of Thrones season seven begins its shortened run with episode one airing July 16, 2017. The previous six seasons premiered in late March or April, but Game of Thrones fans were forced to endure a much longer wait for the debut of the seventh season. Let’s hope the wait for this seven episode season has been worth it.

Season seven’s first episode, “Dragonstone,” begins with Walder Frey (David Bradley) calling his men to order. Every Frey is gathered in the dining room and wine is distributed so they can toast to the family and to heroes. Glasses are raised, the toast is made, and everyone except Walder and the girls in the room drink. He acknowledges they’re the men who helped slaughter the Starks and recalls they butchered a pregnant woman, a mother of five, and slaughtered all of their invited guests. “But you didn’t slaughter every one of the Starks,” says Walder.

Of course, this isn’t Walder but is in fact Arya in disguise. The men drop dead from the poisoned wine as Arya (Maisie Williams) rips off the Walder mask. Arya tells the girls she left standing to inform everyone the North remembers and that winter came for House Frey. Arya, satisfied with her work, walks through the dead men and out of the castle.

Cold winds blow over a field as the White Walkers slowly advance. Winter snow swirls around them and even Wun Wun is with the horde.

Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick) make it to the gate at the Wall, and Bran reveals the Night King is coming for them all. Eddison Tollett (Ben Crompton), now Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, allows them through the gate.

Meanwhile, Jon (Kit Harington) has gathered the families of the North and asks everyone to look for dragonglass because it will be needed to kill the White Walkers. He also declares women and boys need to learn to fight since everyone will have to pitch in to survive this upcoming battle. Lady Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) readily agrees, saying they’ll train everyone on Bear Island.

Jon says the Wall needs to be better defended and Eastwatch-By-The-Sea is the first castle that needs to be reinforced. Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) steps up and agrees he and his wildlings will protect that castle. A debate rages over whether the Umbers and Kastarks should lose their castles because they fought against the Starks. Sansa (Sophie Turner) is of the opinion, which is well received, that those who remained loyal should take charge of the Umber and Kastarks castles, but Jon doesn’t agree. He has no desire to punish sons for their fathers’ sins and won’t take family homes away. He declares this is his decision and it’s final.

Jon calls out young Ned Umber and Alice Kastark and they move forward in the crowd. He asks them to pledge their loyalty to House Stark and they immediately do so. “Yesterday’s wars don’t matter anymore,” says Jon, adding that everyone needs to band together to win this war.

After the meeting, Jon and Sansa have a heated discussion about arguing in front of the men. She mentions Joffrey’s leadership style and Jon takes offense. She soothes his anger by saying he’s far from Joffrey and is a respected, natural leader. They discuss their father and Sansa reminds him their dad couldn’t protect her and neither can he. She says both Robb and her father made stupid mistakes and lost their heads. Sansa suggests it wouldn’t be a bad idea if he actually listened to her.

A raven arrives with a message from Queen Cersei. Cersei demands Jon come to King’s Landing and bend the knee or else. Sansa believes they need to take care of Cersei, but Jon wants to devote all of their attention to taking on the Night King. Sansa warns him not to underestimate Cersei, admitting she learned a great deal from her while at King’s Landing.

Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei (Lena Headey) examine a map of the world painted on the floor. She wonders why Jaime’s been quiet since he returned, and even asks if he’s afraid of her. She talks about Daenerys Targaryen naming Tyrion as her Hand. Cersei’s angry her traitorous brother gives their enemies counsel and asks Jaime where he thinks Daenerys’ ships will land. Jaime is convinced it will be Dragonstone.

Cersei walks around the map, listing all of their enemies. “We can’t win a war if we can’t feed our men and our horses,” says Jaime. He reminds her the Lannisters are viewed as being the losing side of this battle and no one will come take their side. He doesn’t understand why she cares about launching a dynasty when all of their children are dead. When Jaime asks to talk about Tommen, Cersei abruptly declines. She doesn’t want to discuss their dead children since she and Jaime are the last Lannisters that count.

Jaime expresses concern over their lack of allies. He doesn’t know who just killed the Freys but is upset over the loss of those allies.

Shortly thereafter, Cersei reveals she’s invited Euron Greyjoy and his army to King’s Landing. She and Jaime watch Euron’s ships arrive and Jaime questions why she thinks they could possibly count on the Greyjoys. “I know the Ironborn. They are bitter, angry little people,” says Jaime. Then Cersei delivers the shocking news that Euron is coming because he needs a queen.

Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek) speaks in the great hall, describing the treason he endured at the hands of his niece and nephew. He wants to join with Cersei since her family has also committed treason against her. Jaime points out that Euron started a rebellion and burned the Lannister fleet. They exchange barbs and then Euron compliments Jaime on cutting down Greyjoys. If his family wasn’t crushed, then Euron wouldn’t now be the greatest captain of the seas.

Euron reminds Cersei she doesn’t care about the Iron Islands but does care about the Iron Fleet. With it, she can own the seas. In exchange for 1,000 ships, he wants her hand in marriage. She declines his proposal because he’s not trustworthy. She knows he murdered his own brother and Euron suggests she should murder hers. “It feels wonderful,” declares Euron. He says the surest way to her heart is with a priceless gift, so off he goes to get it. He won’t return until it’s in his possession.

Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) is handling Citadel janitorial duties, emptying bedpans and obviously not happy about this particular time in his life. His days are repetitive and endless. He longs to read a book that’s kept locked away out of his reach, even attempting to read it from behind its locked gate.

Sam also helps the Archmaester (Jim Broadbent) with autopsies and uses the opportunity to ask if he can have access to the library’s restricted areas. Sam’s reminded that’s only for Maesters and he’s not one. Sam asks again, saying he’s fought the White Walkers and needs the information on how to defeat them. The Archmaester admits he believes Sam saw what he says he saw, and Sam’s happy to know one person at least believes him. The Archmaester reminds him “the Wall has stood through it all and every winter that ever came has ended.”

Sam waits until nightfall and steals the keys to the restricted area.

Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) gives Podrick (Daniel Portman) a sword lesson while Tormund watches. He’s still interested in Brienne, calling Podrick a lucky man.

Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) and Sansa watch Brienne and Podrick from above, and Littlefinger says he just wants Sansa to be happy and safe. She claims to be safe because she’s home with friends, but it’s obvious she’s not happy. Brienne interrupts their conversation and Littlefinger scurries away. Brienne wants to know why Littlefinger’s still there and Sansa reminds her they need his men. They would have lost without the Vale’s men.

Arya comes a group of men singing, led by Ed Sheeran! She pauses to tell them it’s a pretty song and they invite her to share their rabbit. Arya examines them closely as she takes a seat with the group, revealing she’s heading to King’s Landing. This group is off to help keep the peace because of what happened at the Freys, and Arya asks them about their adventures. They confess they just want to get home, and one soldier says his wife just had a baby and he hopes it’s a girl. They offer her a drink of blackberry wine and she compliments the man who made it. They finally ask why she’s heading to King’s Landing and she replies, “I’m going to kill the Queen.” The men laugh and Arya joins in.

Thoros of Myr (Paul Kaye) and the Hound (Rory McCann) talk about what a horrible night it is to be out on the road. They come across a house in the middle of nowhere and the group decide to spend the night since it looks deserted. The Hound reveals he doesn’t like the look of it (it’s the house where he killed the family while he was with Arya), but the men enter the building anyway. A discussion takes place as to how the people inside died, but the Hound doesn’t give anything away.

The Hound and Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) talk about how long they’ve known each other, and the Hound admits he doesn’t hate him. He does, however, wonder why the Lord of Light keeps bringing Dondarrion back since he’s not the best man. Dondarrion admits he asks himself often why he’s still living and what the lord sees in him. He’s never received an answer.

The Hound says it’s just his luck he ended up with a band of fire-worshippers, but Dondarrion thinks it’s divine justice. Thoros tells the Hound to look into the flames if he wants to know how Dondarrion was brought back to life. The Hound does and has a vision of a wall of ice. The Wall of ice, to be precise. Where the Wall meets the sea there’s a castle, and then the vision shows him a mountain that looks like an arrowhead with the dead marching past. He sees thousands of White Walkers in the flames.

“Do you believe we’re here for a reason?” asks Dondarrion after the Hound describes what he saw.

The Hound buries the dead from inside the house and Thoros asks if he knew them. The Hound replies, “Not really,” as he and Thoros finish burying them. The Hound begins to say a prayer over the grave, telling them they deserved better.

Sam studies the stolen book as Gilly (Hannah Murray) and Little Sam sit nearby. Gilly tells him to get some sleep but then picks up a book. Sam explains the Targaryens used dragonglass to decorate their weapons without even knowing its true value. Sam then finds a map of Dragonstone and gets excited when he discovers it shows a mountain of dragonglass. He immediately pens a message to Jon.

Back at his normal duties the following day, an arm reaches through the small opening in a door as Sam goes to empty a bowl. The arm, covered in greyscale, belongs to Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen). He asks if Daenerys Stormborn has arrived yet.

Dany (Emilia Clarke), Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), Lord Varys (Conleth Hill), and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) stare at the shore as the dragons fly ahead to land. A small boat delivers Dany to the beach where she walks ahead and then kneels to touch the sand. She looks up at the castle and then makes her way to the massive stone dragon heads guarding the closed gate. The gate is pushed open and Daenerys Targaryen has officially arrived at her ancestral home.

Inside, she makes the long walk into the throne room, taking a moment to stare at the throne before entering what looks like the war room. A carving of a dragon graces the wall as Dany stands at the foot of a map of Westeros left behind by Stannis Baratheon. Daenerys turns to her council and asks, “Shall we begin?”

Whittaker also wanted fans to know they shouldn’t be scared by the fact the Doctor is a woman, and she says she expects to get phone calls from four Doctors (Matt Smith, Chris Eccleston, David Tennant, and David Bradley) who she calls friends offering advice. “Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one,” explained Whittaker.

The outgoing Doctor, Peter Capaldi, added, “Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker’s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She’s going to be a fantastic Doctor.”

“I’m so thrilled that Jodie Whittaker said yes to playing the Doctor. I’ve been a fan for years and always hoped to work with her. She is an actor of great emotional range and inhabits every role with complete passion and conviction. Just thinking about what she will bring to the Doctor makes me as excited as a kid at Christmas. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Doctor Who executive producer Matt Strevens.

Filming has begun on Disney’s live-action version of the beloved animated film, Dumbo, with Tim Burton in the director’s chair. The “reimagined” version of the Oscar-winning film stars Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Michael Keaton (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Eva Green (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Nico Parker, Finley Hobbins, Roshan Seth, DeObia Oparei, Sharon Rooney, and Douglas Reith. Ehren Kruger (The Ring, Ghost in the Shell) wrote the screenplay and produces along with Katterli Frauenfelder, Derek Frey, and Justin Springer.

Dumbo was always one of my favorite Disney films,” stated Burton. “We’re trying to give it the same heart, feeling and emotion that we all loved about the original.”

The original animated film opened in theaters on October 23, 1941. The live-action version, which will be shot at Pinewood Studios and Cardington Studios in England, will arrive on March 29, 2019. Per the studio, Dumbo will be “utilizing state-of-the-art visual effects to portray the big-eared elephant and many of his animal counterparts.”

The Plot: Disney’s new live-action feature film Dumbo introduces Holt Farrier (Farrell), a former circus star who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from the war. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children (Parker and Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.
