The CW’s Beauty and the Beast will come to an end after its fourth season. The network hasn’t announced when season four, which was greenlit before season three aired, will premiere but stars Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan took to Twitter to confirm that a fourth season is still planned. Kreuk and Ryan thanked their passionate fans (known as beasties) while commenting on the final season news:

Season three’s ratings were down from season two, but the show continues to have a strong presence on social media. In addition to Ryan and Kreuk, the Beauty and the Beast cast includes Nina Lisandrello and Austin Basis.

The season three plot: “Cat and Vincent are able to focus on their love, finally free from Muirfield, manhunts and beasts, However, that love will be tested as new and more dangerous threats await. When they learn that innocent victims are being used to test the boundaries of the impossible, Cat and Vincent will uncover a deeper conspiracy, one which Vincent can fight only by turning to the beast he carries within. But unleashing the beast will risk Vincent’s life – along with his and Cat’s love – as they struggle to build a normal life together.”

‘Gotham’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap and Review: Strike Force

Gotham Michael Chiklis and Ben McKenzie
Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis), Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie), and Bullock (Donal Logue) in ‘Gotham’ (Photo © 2015 Fox Broadcasting Co.)

“I’m Nathanial Barnes, your new boss,” says Capt. Barnes (Michael Chiklis) as he smashes a chair to get the GCPD’s attention in season two episode four of FOX’s comic book-inspired crime series Gotham.

Capt. Barnes seems to be a ‘take the bull by the horns’ kind of leader, firing a handful of detectives he knows to be lazy or on the take – or both – right off the bat. He then brings Gordon (Ben McKenzie) into his office, and after a brief conversation and bonding over both being former military men, Barnes tells Jim that he is his number two.

At Penguin’s headquarters, Oswald (Robin Lord Taylor) is meeting with all his lieutenants and other underworld contacts, discussing setting in motion a few new rules on how the city’s business is to be run and that no one is to kill or create havoc without first getting permission from Penguin himself. The antics of Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) and the other escaped convicts have left the city in a current stage of fear which is bad for business. As Gotham’s underworld denizens leave the meeting, Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) enters telling Penguin her brother is very interested in meeting him alone.

Back at Theo’s home, it seems his plan to become the next mayor of Gotham is working. The local news is already buzzing about three candidates, including Theo (James Frain) who hasn’t officially put his hat in the ring yet. At his meeting with Oswald, Theo reveals that it was he who did indeed free Jerome and the other convicts so he could seem to be the hero Gotham needs. He shows Penguin a model of a new and improved Gotham with new taller and grander skyscrapers in place of the current low-budget housing. Theo wants Penguin to be his “destroyer” and help him move Gotham toward his vision.

Not being interested in being Theo’s muscle and reminding both Theo and Tabitha that only a year ago he was holding an umbrella for Fish Mooney and now he’s the king of Gotham, Oswald warns them not to underestimate him. As he turns to leave, Theo and Tabitha show Oswald a video feed of his mother chained to a bed and looking extremely scared. Theo tells Oswald if he murders the other two mayoral candidates and makes a failed attempt on Theo’s life so as to rule him as being behind the hits, he’ll let his mother live.

The next day, Barnes and Gordon meet up at the police cadet academy where Barnes reveals to Jim his plan both to fight crime in Gotham City and not deal with corrupt cops. They’re going to create a new Strike Force made up of just-graduated cadets, the cream of the crop. Barnes and Gordon pick four very different but talented cadets and the crime-fighting strike force is born.

Meanwhile, Theo receives the Gotham City Medal of Valor for his bravery against Jerome and during his acceptance speech, a fake attempt is made on his life by the worst drive-by shooting in cinema history. Theo then decides that enough is enough and that he will run for mayor of Gotham City with the crowd cheering and applauding his decision.

Not seeing any quick way out of his situation, Penguin gets Butch (Drew Powell) to help him enter the campaign headquarters of Janice Caulfield (Saundra Santiago) late one-night wearing masks covering their faces. While Butch keeps two young volunteers quiet and still, Penguin murders Caulfield. Butch, trying to distract the horrified volunteers, says, “Sorry to ruin your evening,” and as he and Penguin depart Butch takes their roster list and says, “We have your names and we know where you live. For your own sake, keep quiet.” When Gordon and Bullock (Donal Logue) arrive on the scene the next day they quickly deduce the killer is the {enguin when one of the witnesses says he was a small man who walked funny.

Gotham Sean Pertwee and Camren Bicondova
Alfred (Sean Pertwee) and Selina (Camren Bicondova) in ‘Gotham’ (Photo © 2015 Fox Broadcasting Co)

Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is getting used to being back at school and has Alfred waiting for him around the corner to pick him up so as not to attract attention to himself.

While waiting, Alfred (Sean Pertwee) senses he’s being watched and turns to see Selina (Camren Bicondova) perched on a wall waiting to pay Bruce a visit. When she jumps down, Alfred slaps her across the face hard. He tells her he knows she is responsible for his old friend’s death and that he doesn’t know what she wants with Bruce but that master Bruce is better off without her. Shocked and holding back tears, Selina tries to play it off like it doesn’t matter to her one way or the other as she climbs the wall and leaves. When Bruce arrives Alfred gives him a change of clothes and expects him to run back to Wayne Manor, which is six miles away…Bruce did promise Alfred he would begin training again.

Theo invites Bruce for dinner, and Bruce only accepts so he can thank Theo for saving his life. While talking a little about Bruce’s parents and Wayne Industries Bruce can’t help but notice a young blonde outside the window playing in the fountain. Theo reveals that the young lady is his ward and asks if Bruce would like to meet her to which Bruce says yes.

Back at the GCPD, Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) gets the courage from his other self, the one he argues with from time to time (and encourages him to kill those in his way), to ask out Miss Kringle (Chelsea Spack). She’s intrigued with Mr. Nygma’s newfound confidence and accepts. Nygma cooks up a meal at his place and the date goes fairly well. The two seem to be hitting it off except when Edward slips up and says he’s glad officer Dougherty is dead. Kringle corrects him, saying, “No, he left town,” and Nygma recovers by responding, “I meant he’s dead to you.” The two end up kissing and seem to be beginning a romance that unfortunately is doomed to end badly. Nygma doesn’t realize that the voice in his head is actually a stronger alternate personality.

Going after the second candidate for mayor becomes much more problematic for Penguin who sends expert hitman Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) after the well-protected target. Eliminating almost all of the armed bodyguards, Zsasz finds himself dealing with Gordon, Bullock, and the newly formed strike force. After wounding one of the new officers and getting shot himself Zsasz is forced to escape the scene before completing the hit. On seeing Zsasz during the shoot-out Gordon now knows for sure that it’s the Penguin who’s behind the killings.

On the streets of Gotham, Selina is sitting on a corner still moping over the slap and what Alfred said to her. She just can’t get it out of her head or keep back the tears that come from realizing she might have lost Bruce as her friend forever.

Back at Penguin’s abode, Gordon pays him a visit letting him know that he knows Penguin is behind the killings and he doesn’t understand why. “You’re the king of the underworld. Why do you care about the mayor’s race?!” yells Gordon. Jim also tells Penguin there is a new boss at the GCPD and if he decides to go after Oswald, they will no longer have a friendship. Penguin reminds Gordon about the favor he did that went bad in collecting the debt for Oswald and asks how Capt. Barnes would react if he discovered it. Gordon tells Penguin he’ll face whatever comes his way and Oswald responds, “As will I…”

Loud, brash, and violent, season two episode four titled “Strike Force” brings into focus a little clearer the mind of Gotham’s new mastermind villain and introduces a tough new boss and mentor to Jim Gordon. The over-the-top almost laughable introduction of Capt. Barnes to the Gotham City Police Department is reminiscent of the drill sergeant in the film Full Metal Jacket. The episode demonstrated that it’s a new day for the GCPD with Michael Chiklis perfectly cast as a tough, seemingly incorruptible boss leading the charge against the criminals of Gotham. His scenes with McKenzie crackle with energy. The two actors have almost instant chemistry.

There are two stand-out performances in this episode that need to be pointed out, with the first being delivered by Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin. The audience can’t help but feel for the king of the underworld when he sees his mother looking scared and helpless on the video monitor, and the scene when he finally trusts Butch and tells him why they are killing the candidates for mayor is extremely effective.

The second impressive performance is given by Carmen Bicondova as Selina. Even though she only has two very short scenes, they’re very powerful and full of emotion. The shock and hurt she shows being slapped by Alfred and then holding back the tears while being told so brutally that Bruce is better off with her out of his life rings so true. Later in the episode when she’s just sitting on a street corner brooding and unable to get Alfred’s words out of her ears, and still trying to hold back tears, realizing she may have just lost her friend and first crush forever, is touching.

With Penguin looking to be Theo’s new puppet, Gordon having his own strike force, and a new no-nonsense boss running the GCPD, Gotham season two is shaping up to be a much bigger show than the first season.

‘Fargo’ Season Two Episode One Recap and Review: Waiting for Dutch

Fargo Patrick Wilson Photo
Patrick Wilson as Lou Solverson in ‘Fargo’ season two (Photo: Chris Large / FX)

In season one of FX’s Fargo, which was set in the same world as the Coen brothers’ Fargo the movie but didn’t involve the same characters, detective Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman) was involved in the search for the truth behind a series of murders. Molly’s dad, Lou (Keith Carradine), was retired from the state troopers and provided a sounding board when she needed a fresh take on the evidence. In season two of Fargo, Lou is front and center (and younger), tackling a case he talked about in season one, a horrible case that involved multiple murders.

Season two’s Lou Solverson is played by Patrick Wilson (Zipper, The Conjuring), Molly is just six years old, and it’s 1979. But Fargo wouldn’t be Fargo if it played things straight, so season two kicks off with the classic MGM black and white lion logo followed by a bizarre scene from a fictional Ronald Reagan Western called Massacre at Sioux Falls. An actor who’s supposed to be an Indian is waiting in the cold, surrounded by extras playing dead soldiers. The action is on pause while Ronald Reagan has more arrows put into him off-screen, and that’s why this Fargo episode is titled ‘Waiting for Dutch.”

Fade into a montage of clips from the ‘70s featuring President Jimmy Carter, cars lined up for blocks due to the gas shortage, Jim Jones, and Ted Bundy. And as with season one and the film, we’re told this tale is based on true events but that the names have been changed. “Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.”

Rye Gerhardt (Kieran Culkin) is late meeting his brother and he’s behind on his collections. His big brother Dodd (Jeffrey Donovan) reminds him of his low man on the totem pole status in their family. “You wear short pants until you prove you’re a man,” says Dodd, warning Rye that he has one day to come up with the protection money he was supposed to have collected.

At the Gerhardt home, matriarch Floyd (Jean Smart) is going over the books with the family and it’s coming up short. Another outfit is cutting in on their turf, and it’s affecting their income. Dodd says he’ll handle it, and patriarch Otto (Michael Hogan) says he’ll grind their bones to make his… We know what’s he going to say, but he has a stroke before he can finish his threat.

Rye goes to the typewriter store because he’s working on a side deal. There’s a new self-correcting typewriter about to hit the market and the store owner is offering Rye a way to get in on what’s sure to be a cash cow if he forgives the store’s debt to his family. Rye’s all in but has to convince a judge to unfreeze the store owner’s bank account before the deal can move forward.

Rye goes to the courthouse and tails the female judge to Luverne, Minnesota’s Waffle Hut where he takes a seat at the counter and watches her. The attentive waitress is freaking him out and he orders a coffee and proceeds to pour what looks like a cup of sugar into it. The only other customers in the Waffle Hut leave and now it’s just Rye and the judge. He plops down in the booth opposite her and before he opens his mouth she tells him no. She’s not buying whatever it is he’s selling. Rye tells her anyway that he needs her to change her mind about something – or else. She says no way by way of a shot of bug spray right in Rye’s face.

He gets up and stumbles, but still manages to pull out his gun and shoot her. The cook comes at him with a pan so he shoots him, too. That leaves the waitress, who can’t be left alive as a witness.

Meanwhile, the judge is only mostly dead and manages to stab Rye in the back before he fires three more shots into her. Now everyone’s dead and Rye is left alone in the Waffle Hut to try and get the knife out of his back. He cleans out the cash register before noticing the waitress has stumbled out of the restaurant. She wasn’t quite dead either. He follows her outside, has to reload, and shoots her in the back. He sees lights coming at him and it appears he’s being buzzed by an alien spaceship. While Rye’s standing in the road in the snow staring up at the sky, a car runs smack dab into him. It drives off with his body on the hood and his head through the windshield.

Lou’s reading a bedtime story to Molly while his wife Betsy (Cristin Milioti) is doing the laundry. It’s a quiet night at the Solversons until the phone rings with the news of a triple murder at Waffle Hut.

Lou arrives at the Waffle Hut, looks around the murder scene, and starts taking notes. In walks Sheriff Hank Larsson (Ted Danson), Lou’s wife’s father. He knows the cook but doesn’t recognize the judge. They think she might be a tourist. He asks about Betsy and Lou says she’s doing okay but has been busy trying out new recipes that don’t always work. Outside, they look at skidmarks in the road but Hank’s not sure they’re connected to the murder. Lou figures out the shooter has a couple of wounds and bled on the way to kill the waitress outside, but he doesn’t know why the killer didn’t take his own car. They look up and see a shoe in the tree which should have provided them with the clue that the killer was hit by a car and knocked out of his shoes (why does that always happen?). But they don’t put the tree shoe and the skidmarks together.

Fargo Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons
Kirsten Dunst as Peggy Blomquist and Jesse Plemons as Ed Blomquist in ‘Fargo’ (Photo: Chris Large / FX)

The next new character to be introduced is Ed Blomquist (Jesse Plemons). He works at a butcher shop and gets to take home some free pork chops because the customer never picked them up.

At the V.W. hall, Karl Weathers (Nick Offerman) is explaining the military-industrial complex to a young guy who has no idea what he’s talking about. Lou sits down at their table, and Karl wants him to tell the guy about the military-industrial complex. Lou says he just came from a triple murder and that Hank thinks it’s a robbery gone bad. Karl thinks it’s a conspiracy like Kennedy and Oswald, but Lou says it’s just a diner in Minnesota. Lou has to get home because Betsy had her chemo today and Karl is pissed at the world that a good woman like Betsy has such a devastating medical issue.

Ed arrives home to his wife, Peggy (Kirsten Dunst), with his free chops. She’s cooking dinner: hamburger helper and tater tots.

Lou returns home and Betsy wonders if maybe there was an accomplice in the getaway car. Her dad called to talk things through before going to bed. Molly made Lou an ashtray at school, and Lou jokes, “She knows I don’t smoke, right?” But the smile leaves his face as he silently considers Betsy’s health issues.

Peggy’s excited about an upcoming seminar that will help her re-examine old reflex patterns. Ed tells her his boss is interested in retiring and wants him to take over the shop and maybe Peggy will take over the salon one day unless she has a few kids. She says they’re trying, but he says they’re not trying very often. He thinks they would have amazing kids. Suddenly there’s a noise and Peggy knocks a glass off the table to disguise it. There’s still banging coming from the garage and Ed opens the door to investigate.

Well, wouldn’t you know it? Peggy is the one who was driving by the Waffle Hut and slammed into Rye after he finished up his killing spree. The car is a mess with a huge hole in the windshield and blood all over the hood, and Peggy lies that she hit a deer. But, the banging continues and Ed asks if she brought the deer home still alive. Grabbing a flashlight, Ed sees Rye, bloody and trying to escape the garage. He comes at Ed with a knife but Ed grabs a gardening tool and kills him.

Peggy says when she first hit Rye she thought he was dead, so she drove home with him sticking out of the windshield. Ed wants to know why she didn’t take the stranger to the hospital or police and was just calmly making dinner when he got home. Peggy thinks that because it was a hit and run she’ll be in big trouble and suggests running away to California. But Ed wants to buy the shop and start a family so Peggy says that means they’ll have to clean it up and pretend it didn’t happen or their future is over. Ed says, “Okay, then we clean it up.”

So, how do you get rid of a dead body? They toss it in their freezer.

Episode one of season two finishes up with the introduction of the Kansas City mob. Mob boss Joe Bulo (Brad Garrett) is making a presentation to his gang about the possibility of absorbing the Gerhardt family syndicate out of Fargo, ND. The Gerhardts control trucking and distribution and because Otto had a stroke, Joe doesn’t know who is in charge. It could be his wife, Floyd, who Joe admits is tough “but a girl.” Or, maybe one of his three sons – Dodd, Bear (Angus Sampson), or Rye – is taking over the family business. No matter who it is, with Otto incapacitated now is the perfect time to “aggressively” acquire the syndicate.

The Bottom Line:

Fans of Fargo‘s first season expected season two to be odd, but did anyone expect the appearance of a UFO? Hopefully, series creator/writer Noah Hawley will fill us all in on what that particular scene was about. It’d also be nice to learn relatively soon why Peggy didn’t seem overly upset about having a nearly dead man draped over her car’s hood as she drove back to her house.

Season two has the same tone and vibe as season one, and episode one of the new season does a terrific job of establishing the key players in the dark comedy/crime drama. It’s a shame we seem to have lost Rye so early on as his dimwitted character uttered some of the best lines of episode one. Still, there’s a wealth of colorful characters introduced, and more still to come, and someone is likely to fill the void left by Rye’s demise.

Living up to the immensely entertaining season one is going to be a difficult task, but season two’s first episode delivered smartly written, fascinating characters and set up a compelling story of murder and rival mobs. After just one episode, Hawley and his new ensemble of actors have hooked us back into the small-town world of Fargo.

John Ridley’s ready to direct a film about the 1992 Los Angeles riots, with Broad Green Pictures partnering with Imagine Entertainment to produce the dramatic film. Ridley wrote the script and according to Broad Green Pictures’ official announcement, filming is expected to get underway on the still untitled project in the spring of 2016.

Brian Grazer (American Gangster) is on board as a producer. Ridley’s credits include an Oscar win for the 12 Years a Slave screenplay as well as creating the Emmy-winning American Crime series.

“This is a seminal event in our country’s history, the reverberations of which are still far too relevant today,” stated Broad Green Pictures founders CEO Gabriel Hammond and Chief Creative Officer Daniel Hammond. “We were blown away by John’s amazing screenplay and we know that under his direction and the aegis of Imagine the film will be truly incredible. This is why we started this company. To make movies like this.”

“We have barely seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of John Ridley’s talent,” added Grazer. “I am confident that he will capture the magnitude of the events that unfolded and the issues that led up to them. He will show the world why the riots cannot and should not be forgotten.”

The Plot:

In April of 1992, America’s worst civil disturbance in the 20th century took place in Los Angeles. Sparked by the acquittal of four LAPD officers tried for the near-fatal beating of black motorist Rodney King and fueled by racial tension, growing despair surrounding the economic climate, and a deep-seated distrust of law enforcement, the riots left the city devastated. Looting and fires ravaged Los Angeles for four straight days leaving more than 50 dead and 2,300 injured, an estimated $1 billion in property damage and the city divided. Based on true events, the film tells the story through the eyes of several key figures involved in the uprising and the events that led to it.
