New ‘Suffragette’ Poster and Video Honor Women’s Equality Day

Suffragette Poster and Video Honor Women's Equality Day

Focus Features has issued a new poster for the dramatic film Suffragette in honor of Women’s Equality Day. August 26th is Women’s Equality Day and recognizes the day in 1920 when the US government finally gave women the right to vote. Suffragette, directed by Sarah Gavron and starring Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, and Helena Bonham Carter, is inspired by women who put themselves on the line in order to help ensure women would be given voting rights. The film has a female director, female writer (Abi Morgan), and female producers (Alison Owen and Faye Ward). The cast also includes Anne-Marie Duff, Romola Garai, Natalie Press, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson.

Suffragette will open in theaters in LA and NY on October 23, 2015 before expanding to additional cities.

The Plot:

Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women’s civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation. Inspired by true events, Suffragette is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives.

NBC’s ‘Spartan Race’ Casting Details

Casting Begins on NBC's Spartan Race

NBC’s opened up casting on its new competition series Spartan Race, based on what’s considered to be one of the best obstacle course races. Spartan Race (the working title) comes from American Ninja Warriors‘ producers, but unlike that series, this new competition series is made up of teams rather than individuals attempting near-impossible physical feats on their own. The network is now looking for potential participants who can handle the physical demands of the competition.

Per NBC: “Spartan Race is the ultimate in team competition. Friends, families and co-workers must work together and push each other to their mental and physical limits as they race across specially designed Spartan courses engineered to test their determination, endurance, and will. Teams of five — comprised of two men, two women, and an elite Spartan athlete — will battle over mud, water, and fire for a chance to win a large cash prize.”

Spartan Race is the leading obstacle race company had holds events in 20 countries. Over one million people have participated in races that cover more than three miles.

If you think you have what it takes to compete, visit www.spartancasting.com for details on how to apply.

The Flash, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin Posters

The CW’s just unveiled new posters for two returning shows and one new comedy series. The network has released new posters for season two of The Flash, season two of Jane the Virgin, and season one of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The new posters feature Grant Gustin in his season two costume of the comic book-inspired series, Gina Rodriguez holding her newborn baby, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom looking a little crazy.

Jane the Virgin premieres Monday, October 12 at 9 pm ET/PT

For those who haven’t heard about the new addition to The CW lineup, here’s the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend plot: “Rebecca Bunch (Bloom) is a successful, driven, and possibly crazy young woman who impulsively gives up everything – her partnership at a prestigious law firm and her upscale apartment in Manhattan – in a desperate attempt to find love and happiness in that exotic hotbed of romance and adventure: suburban West Covina, Calif. (it’s only two hours from the beach! Four in traffic).”

Pharrell, Demi Lovato Set for MTV Video Music Awards

Pharrell, Demi Lovato Among VMA Performers

MTV’s added Pharrell Williams, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots to the list of performers set to take the stage during the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. The Weeknd was previously confirmed for the show and Miley Cyrus will be doing her tongue-sticking-out best to host the awards show. MTV will air the VMAs live at 9pm ET/PT (tape delayed on the West Coast) on Sunday, August 30th.

Kanye West will be accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award which should provide one of the event’s more interesting segments. Will any of the famous celebrity attendees pull a Kanye and interrupt West as he accepts an award which easily could have gone to dozens of other influential artists? Or will Kanye be allowed to deliver an acceptance speech without someone else taking the stage to steal his moment? It’s a matter of class vs karma.

This year’s VMAs are executive produced by Jesse Ignjatovic, Van Toffler, Stephen Friedman, Amy Doyle and Garrett English. Hamish Hamilton is directing.

‘No Escape’ Movie Review

No Escape Movie Review
Owen Wilson and Lake Bell in ‘No Escape’ (Photo © 2015 The Weinstein Company)

No Escape is a highly disturbing, pulse-pounding action thriller that finds Owen Wilson transforming into an unlikely everyday superhero dad able to scale tall buildings almost in a single bound to keep his wife and two young daughters safe from a vicious mob. Actually, make that not just a vicious mob but an entire country out to kill all Americans because they’re involved with a company that’s done the country wrong.

A film completely devoid of any gray areas, No Escape is an us against them action movie with the ‘us’ made up of four adults and two children (played quite convincingly by Claire Geare and Sterling Jerins), and the ‘them’ everyone else in the film.

In addition to Jack Dwyer (Wilson) protecting the kids, Lake Bell becomes a tigress in full fight mode playing Annie Dwyer, a woman ill-equipped to handle a move to a foreign country (think Cambodia, but it’s never named). For Pete’s sake, this is a woman who brought along her own rice cooker; that’s how completely clueless she is about approaching life in a country bordering Vietnam (which is actually named, so we know they’re near it). Pitching in to save the day is Pierce Brosnan as a hard-drinking, party-hardying womanizer who makes friends with the family pretty much the minute they step off the plane. If you assume that somehow he’ll be involved in helping them later in the film, you’d be correct. That’s not a spoiler because it’s obvious. Blatantly obvious.

And the fourth adult who’s allowed to display a personality in No Escape is a cab driver (played by Sahajak Boonthanakit) who is bizarrely obsessed with pre-cosmetic makeover Kenny Rogers.

Really, there’s nothing to the story although the Dowdle Brothers attempted to inject political commentary into the plot. I say “attempted to” in that if you were to actually buy into the political commentary they’re attempting to sell, you’d flee from No Escape 15 minutes into the movie because of how broadly it paints the good guys, the bad guys, and the faceless mob who are mowed down by bullets without a pause to reflect the implications of their horrific slaughter.

Normally, I’d suggest you pay attention to the exposition and seek to empathize with someone, anyone, in order to get invested in the story. In this case, you don’t need to bother with any of the reasoning behind the actions. You’ll root for the family because they’re strangers in a foreign land just trying to get home after being thrust into a life-or-death battle that wasn’t their doing. You’ll root for Pierce Brosnan and Sahajak Boonthanakit because they’re the film’s comic relief, a team that steps up when the family is threatened.

In no way is No Escape light entertainment. This is an extremely dark film, more so than you could possibly expect from viewing the trailers. When you don’t believe the situation could get any worse for the family, it takes a nauseatingly brutal turn in a direction you never anticipated it could go. The family’s terror is contagious, oozing off the screen and finding its way into your pores even in the relative safety of a darkened theater.

But, again, it’s necessary to take this film at face value. View it as an action-packed thriller that’s not reflective of any actual political views, race, or moral issues and only as the story of a family attempting to find their way out against impossible odds. The Dowdle Brothers have created a suspenseful, heart-wrenching, adrenaline-charged thriller featuring terrific performances from all of the lead actors, young and old.

‘VH1 Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn’ Premiering in 2016

VH1's Family Therapy with Dr Jenn Premiering in 2016

The new reality series VH1 Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn is set to focus on celebrity families and will premiere in early 2016. The celebs who’ll be seeking help from Dr. Jenn Mann in season one include Tiffany “New York” Pollard and mother Sister Patterson, Dina Lohan and Michael Lohan (Lindsay’s parents), Damon Dash and brothers Jeremy Dash and Bobby Dash, reality TV star Bam Margera and mother April Margera, and Teen Mom Briana Dejesus and sister Brittany Dejesus.

Irwin Entertainment produces with Dr. Mann, John Irwin, Damian Sullivan, Tim Eagan, Susan Levison, Jill Holmes, and Fernando Mills executive producing.

The Plot:

Blood is thicker than water – but the harsh spotlight of fame can thin it out for some families. Just ask the Gosselins, The Duggars or The Hogans. While fame and fortune can give you almost everything you desire, it certainly doesn’t buy happiness, heal past wounds or solve deep-rooted family issues. VH1 Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn hopes to shed a little light on the complicated and often misunderstood world of celebrity families who still have to grapple with universal issues – but under a microscope.

In the brand new series, each family is facing complex issues – from not successfully handling the spotlight to harmless sibling banter becoming tabloid fodder to messy divorce proceedings playing out on the national stage.
