Fox has signed up Broadway star Aaron Tveit to play Danny Zuko in the live music event Grease: Live. Tveit joins a cast led by Julianne Hough as Sandy, Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, and Keke Palmer as Marty. The network also announced Carlos PenaVega will be playing Danny’s BFF, Kenickie.

Grease: Live will be directed by Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski. Kail will handle the stage direction while Rudzinski is the live television director. Based on the Grease musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, this live TV version will be adapted by Robert Cary and Jonathan Tolins.

Fox has set a January 31, 2016 airdate.

“I’m thrilled and honored to be joining this incredibly talented team of actors in reimagining this classic and beloved musical,” stated Tveit. “Playing ‘Danny Zuko’ is a dream role and I can’t wait to be a part of all the fun that comes along with performing live on television.”

Tveit’s credits include the film adaptation of Les Miserables and roles in TV’s Graceland, Gossip Girl, The Good Wife, Ugly Betty, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

PenaVega played Carlos Garcia in Big Time Rush, and had roles in Spare Parts, E.R., and Summerland.

Avan Jogia Interview – ‘Tut,’ Playing an Egyptian Pharaoh, and the Research Process

Avan Jogia in Tut
Avan Jogia stars in Spike TV’s ‘Tut’

Spike TV’s set to air the fascinating mini-series Tut beginning on July 19, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT. The mini-series will play over three nights and stars Avan Jogia (Twisted) as the Boy King, Tutankhamun. Sir Ben Kingsley co-stars as Tut’s trusted adviser, Vizier, with Kylie Bunbury, Sibylla Deen, Nonso Anozie, and Alexander Siddig in supporting roles.

The Plot: Spike’s Tut recounts, for the first time on television, a dramatized saga of one of history’s most extraordinary rulers, Tutankhamun aka King Tut, his rise to power and his struggle to lead Egypt to glory, while his closest advisors, friends and lovers scheme for their own nefarious interests. Thrust into power after the murder of his father, Tut is forced to marry his strong willed, ambitious half-sister (Deen) in order to maintain the dynasty.

In love with a commoner (Bunbury), he struggles to protect her from the jealous queen. And although Tut rules as Pharaoh, he is exploited by a shrewd Grand Vizier (Kingsley), a ruthless military General (Anozie) and a scheming High Priest (Siddig) who look down on him as someone they can control. But through unexpected twists and turns, Tut strives to overcome the odds, rising from a manipulated prince into an unlikely hero who triumphs over his enemies both from within and without leading his kingdom to glory.

In support of mini-series’ premiere, I had the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with Tut‘s star Avan Jogia. Jogia is captivating in the role, and even though we all know King Tut died at a young age, his performance will leave viewers hoping for a different outcome.

Avan Jogia Exclusive Interview

What research did you do into the period and into King Tutankhamun?

Avan Jogia: “I obviously delved into his life as we know it from a historical standpoint. His death has been in contention since his discovery. And then also just looking at his life and I looked at the Egyptian society, how it was structured. It didn’t change for 3,000 years, but he had a very interesting part of the story.

He is born into this structure that has been in place and unchanged for a very long time, and his father was probably the first person to really upset the order of things. There’s this weight upon him. What is he going to do as the next in line, the next pharaoh? So, I did as much research as I could from an academic standpoint but also just looked at the way people of power have been treated throughout different eras and what it means to be a ruling figurehead.”

Was there anything in particular in your research that really helped you get into him?

Avan Jogia: “That’s interesting. I mean, just taking the throne at such a young age and looking at the violence, how easily death comes to people of that era, whether it’s through sickness or whatnot. Just that idea that the clock is very much ticking on you and what you’re going to achieve as a ruler. It’s almost like you have to expedite your desires and ambitions and try to get them because you only have a limited time to be remembered by history.

That was always interesting to me, too, and that was something from the script that locked it in for me because there’s this character who, in the script, is in the battles with his armies. Now, we don’t know if that’s true. We don’t have that information yet. There are suggestions that maybe he rode chariots and stuff, but we don’t have any firm evidence. But for our story, that’s what happened. I had to think of someone when you’re a boy, and you’re going to war, what is going to keep you alive? If you’re not a very skilled warrior, what’s going to keep you alive? It’s just ruthlessness and will, and I took that outside of his war life and then also took that into his palace life. This kind of ruthlessness and will to be remembered. A will to not be denied his bloodright.”

Prior to working on this project, did you know anything about Tut?

Avan Jogia: “Yeah, I’ve always been a huge admirer of ancient cultures. I was very big, as a child, very big into Greco-Roman history and mythology, and so Egyptian mythology always interested me. But I never really delved into it the way that I have done now. It’s the god structure. It’s a very interesting culture. It’s the longest-ruling empire the world has ever known. It’s mind-boggling.”

Was Tut something that when you first read the script or were approached about the project, you knew immediately you were going to jump into?

Avan Jogia: “Yes. As an actor, I’m always looking for – and I think that most actors are looking for – an excuse to immerse themselves or bury themselves with something. I think that when you get handed this kind of script, and it’s written the way that it is, you’re lucky. You’re thankful just to be given the opportunity to immerse yourself in it. I think that that’s a desire of most actors.”

What do you think about this being a mini-series rather than a lengthy series or even a 12-episode limited series? Do you think that the mini-series format is right for telling this particular tale?

Avan Jogia: “For telling this tale? Absolutely. I love the mini-series format. I think that what it does is it allows us to explore the character deeper than a movie could. It allows us to explain subtleties that a movie couldn’t because you have more time. I think that it’s better than an unlimited series, a continuous series because you’re able to trace the arc. You have a destination. You know where you’re going.

I got all 500 pages of the script flopped down on my desk, and I was able to work through all of it in one chunk and knowing where I was meant to be arriving at, I was able to trace an arc more efficiently than you would if you were on a never-ending television show. You have a lot more faith in the writers at that point as to how the arc is going to be on a never-ending television show whereas with the mini-series, you’re given that responsibility and ability to follow that arc from beginning to end because you know both points of destination.”

Can you talk about getting prepared physically for this role?

Avan Jogia: “Well, I’d never done anything like this. The action-hero thing is very interesting, and it’s something I’ve never explored. We did a month and a half of just action, purely fights and stuff like that. We shot it, obviously, all on location in Morocco and when we started shooting the series, it was the end of summer. It was quite hot. 102 degrees in the noon sun and it’s coming down and you’re in an ancient town, and there’s nothing around. There’s no trailer, there’s nothing. There’s nowhere to park anything. It was in the middle of this old town. It was an ancient fort that we rebuilt parts of to make look like a proper structure of the time.

The action stuff was incredibly invigorating for me. Me and my brother used to play with sticks in my backyard and imagine all these kinds of things and fight with swords, and now I’m doing it with a $40 million budget. It’s 360. I’m riding a chariot, I’m jumping off the chariot, shooting bows and arrows. It was really, really cool and something I’d never explored before.”

You’re living the dream.

Avan Jogia: [Laughing] “Absolutely, and that’s one of the benefits or reasons I got into acting. It’s just to be able to explore all these incredible fantasies or imaginative scenarios that I had as a kid and do it for real with all the props and the costumes and the swords and the fighting. It’s fun.”

Speaking of the costumes, just stepping into them must have helped you really get into character.

Avan Jogia: “Yeah. I had the wardrobe team come and dress me every morning because a) the costumes are incredibly intricate and hard to get into, and b) as pharaoh, I would imagine, the idea of not being in control. The human being, in the modern age, you get out of bed and you choose the clothes that you want to wear that morning, that you identify with and you go out and you live the life that you want. Pharaohs didn’t have the decision to wear what they wanted to. There was thousands of years of tradition behind what they were wearing, so the idea of waking up in the morning and being completely controlled from the beginning of the day to the end of the day is something that was really interesting to me.

I had these wardrobe people come in and they were dressing me, and every single piece of wardrobe was handmade for this. Every piece of jewelry was handmade for this. We had an amazing jeweler who was crafting these incredible things with stones, opals. It was just an incredible craftsmanship and artistry to every one of the pieces. So, yes, it’s incredibly helpful as an actor to put on all that gear and then it’s just 360 at that point. You’re looking out at this massive courtyard, everything has been built from scratch, it’s three football field lengths long, it’s 25-foot high columns and you’re wearing all this jewelry and there are 800 screaming people in front and you’re addressing your nation. It’s hard to act at that point. You don’t have to do a lot of acting.”

Why do you think we’re still so fascinated with that era and with Tut?

Avan Jogia: “I think Tut is such a rare case. It’s such an interesting case of why he’s so important. It’s a unique situation. As a pharaoh, he didn’t build the pyramids for instance. He didn’t put up the Sphinx. He didn’t commission the Sphinx. He didn’t do any of the things that are still standing today, but he had the happenstance of being discovered at a time where, in 1922 first of all, it was the first time that globally the news was able to spread in such a fast way with newsreels that had just come out. This discovery in Egypt swept across the globe in a way that it hadn’t done before. News hadn’t spread like that before, especially news that wasn’t war-related.

It was public interest news and then from there, especially with the curse thing and all, all these interesting things surrounding it and I think it’s just a cultural phenomenon because we don’t have any lasting examples of what it would have been like to see all the jewels and treasures of a pharaoh. It’s something we don’t have. We don’t have any evidence of that. There are no tombs that are fully intact of a pharaoh.”

And one last question, can you discuss working with Sir Ben Kingsley?

Avan Jogia: “Absolutely. Ben was, first of all, an obviously amazing actor and someone I’ve idolized growing up and incredibly generous to me during the whole process. The structure of the script really is important to him and he did everything in his power to help me feel and put me in that place of being the pharaoh and chief of the Egyptians. He helped me get there and put me in that place and also, he’s just a very generous actor and completely committed to his work. That’s an infectious thing. It’s an infectious thing to have someone that committed to the job. It was definitely helpful for me.”

Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Dougray Scott Star in ‘London Town’

Filming is currently underway on the punk rock film London Town starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Daniel Huttlestone, Dougray Scott, and Natascha McElhone. The Joneses‘ Derrick Borte is directing from a script by Kirsten Sheridan, Sonya Gildea, and Matthew Brown, with filming taking place around London.

Commenting on the Dutch Tilt Film and Culmination Productions film, executive producer Lee Vandermolen said, “London Town richly illustrates how music and your first record can change your life forever.”

The Plot:

The film tells the punk-era account of a teenage boy Shay (Huttlestone) who ventures into central London from its bleak outskirts to find his estranged mother, inspired both by the music she left behind and the burgeoning punk music scene into which she’s plunged. From learning how to love to supporting his family to becoming a man, Shay’s journey features the iconic music of The Clash.

London Town takes place in 1978, at the dawn of Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative revolution in England. Fourteen-year-old Shay (Huttlestone) has to grow up quickly as he takes care of his six-year-old sister while his father Nick (Scott) works two jobs to barely stay afloat. When his estranged mother Sandrine (McElhone) sends him a cassette of The Clash’s “White Riot,” Shay’s world opens and he goes to London to find her.

In the process, he meets a young punk girl, Vivian who shares his love for their music. As Shay falls in love, his father has an accident and is hospitalized. Shay must take over both his father’s jobs and is able to reconnect with his mum, but she is at heart the flawed, free-spirited woman who left him years earlier. Soon, Shay’s new world starts to crumble and he is faced with major decisions that may save him in the end.

First-time feature film director Paul Duddridge’s Mothers Day has just landed Courteney Cox and Roselyn Sanchez. Cox and Sanchez join Susan Sarandon, Sharon Stone, Christina Ricci, Paul Wesley, and Eva Amurri Martino in the ensemble cast. Paige Cameron’s writing the script and Nigel Levy is co-directing, with Danielle James and Amy Williams producing.

Filming is currently underway in Los Angeles.

The Plot: In Mothers Day, interwoven stories of what it is to be a mom are tied together through the story of hip and happy single gal Rigby Gray, a rock photographer who is riding a career high when an unlikely and unexpected pregnancy forces her to turn her lens inward. As Rigby slowly comes to terms with what it might mean to change her life forever, she discovers with fresh eyes her own relationship with her estranged mother and, through a series of photographs documenting motherhood in all its varieties, she considers what it means to be maternal at all.

Mothers Day is a celebration of the unparalleled love between mothers and their children, the myriad of ways we connect in our modern-day world, and explores the most important foundational relationship in our lives – the one with our mother.

‘Hawaii Five-O’ Starts Season 6 with a Blessing

Hawaii Five-O Season 6 Starts Shooting

The tradition continues on the set of CBS’ Hawaii Five-O, with the start of a new season once again kicking off with a Hawaiian blessing. The cast and crew gathered at the start of the production on season six to take part in the traditional ceremony and to pay respect to the islands’ culture. Among the cast members who participated in the season six blessing ceremony were Alex O’Loughlin, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, Chi McBride, Jorge Garcia, Teilor Grubbs, Dennis Chun, Ian Anthony Dale, Shawn Garnett and Christopher Sean.

According to CBS, the ceremony was officiated by Kahu (Officiant) Kordell Kekoa on July 8, 2015. Producers and crew members also were part of the blessing which centered around the Hawaiian word for six (‘eono).

The new season of the dramatic series kicks off on Friday, September 25, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT.

The Plot: Hawaii Five-O is a contemporary take on the classic series about a new elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the Islands’ sun-drenched beaches. Detective Steve McGarrett, a decorated Naval officer-turned-cop, returned to Oahu to investigate his father’s murder and stayed after Hawaii’s former governor persuaded him to head up the new team: his rules, no red tape and full blanket authority to hunt down the biggest “game” in town. Joining McGarrett is Detective Danny “Danno” Williams, a relocated ex-New Jersey cop – a working man in paradise who prefers skyscrapers to the coastline – but who’s committed to keeping the Islands safe for his young daughter; Chin Ho Kelly, an ex-Honolulu police detective and former protégé of McGarrett’s father who was wrongly accused of corruption; Dr. Max Bergman, the quirky coroner; Chin’s cousin, Kono Kalakaua, a beautiful and fearless native; and Captain Lou Grover, who formerly headed Hawaii’s SWAT unit. Joining them is Jerry Ortega, a former classmate of Chin’s and the Island’s local conspiracy theorist. The state’s brash FIVE-0 unit, who may spar and jest among themselves, remain determined to eliminate the seedy elements from the 50th state.

‘Deadpool’ Cast Tweet About Comic Con

Was there ever any doubt that Ryan Reynolds and his Deadpool co-stars would put in an appearance at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con? Not really as Reynolds is a fan favorite at the convention and 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool is an obvious fit, much more so than 90% of the films/TV shows that use Comic Con as a promotional platform. Reynolds and his fellow cast members TJ Miller, Gina Carano, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, and Ed Skrein took to Twitter to announce they’re heading to San Diego, revealing the news in a series of tweets set to The Golden Girls theme song.

Here are the Deadpool cast member tweets in order:

Deadpool, directed by Tim Miller, will open in theaters on February 12, 2016.

The Plot:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

‘Rectify’ Earns an Early Fourth Season Renewal

Rectify Renewed for Season Four
Abigail Spencer and Aden Young in ‘Rectify’ (Photo Credit: Tina Rowden)

The season three premiere of the award-winning series Rectify is set for July 9, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT and prior to its airing SundanceTV has already confirmed it’s committed to a fourth season of the drama series. The network has ordered a fourth season which will air in 2016 as just announced by Charlie Collier, President of AMC and SundanceTV.

“Even in an increasingly crowded field of dramas on television, Rectify has established itself as something special,” stated Collier. “What Ray McKinnon, this incredible cast and everyone associated with the show have been able to achieve is remarkable, and we are so pleased to usher in this third season with an order for a fourth. Rectify has had such a huge impact in establishing SundanceTV as a home for high-quality, intelligent drama. We are excited to continue this important partnership with Ray and the entire team.”

Rectify was created by Ray McKinnon and stars Aden Young, Abigail Spencer, J. Smith-Cameron, Luke Kirby, Clayne Crawford, Adelaide Clemens, Bruce McKinnon, and Jake Austin Walker.

The Plot:

Rectify follows the life of Daniel Holden (Young), who returns to his small hometown in Georgia after serving 19 years on death row. Having spent his entire adult life waiting to die, Daniel must now try to find a way to cope with his past and forge a “normal” life with a future before him. His struggle affects everyone whom he comes in contact with, from his very fractured family, to those working to protect him and those working against him on the side of law and order, and those in his hometown.

Season three of the hour-long drama picks up where season two left off, on the afternoon of Daniel’s plea deal. Will the deal be accepted? Will Daniel be forced to leave town? And when the body of a missing person is discovered, law enforcement once again turns to him for answers.

As Daniel’s sister Amantha (Spencer) attempts to live her own life, she is given an opportunity at a local store that for the first time in a long time has nothing to do with her brother. Meanwhile, Tawney (Clemens) and Ted Jr. (Crawford) struggle to see if their marriage has a future. Janet (Cameron) and Ted Sr. (Bruce McKinnon), also under pressure from Daniel’s actions, will find that their marriage is put to the test as well.

Warner Bros Television Stars Describe Comic Con

Wild, crazy, madness…Those are some of the words used by stars of Warner Bros Television’s primetime shows to describe the annual event that is the San Diego Comic-Con when asked to do so in just three words. Susan Sarandon is reuniting with her Lorenzo’s Oil co-star Nick Nolte for the drama series Graves. Nolte and Sarandon played a married couple in Lorenzo’s Oil and will also be playing a married couple in Graves.

Set up at EPIX, Graves is a half-hour political satire created by Swing Vote‘s Joshua Michael Stern.

EPIX is planning on an autumn 2016 premiere date. Season one will have a 10-episode run, with Stern executive producing as well as directing some of the episodes. Also on board as executive producers are Greg Shapiro, Eric Weinberg, and Keith Eisner.

“We are overjoyed to have Susan join the cast of Graves,” said Mark S. Greenberg, President and CEO of EPIX. “Susan is a phenomenal actor whose comedic talents will bring a depth and richness of character to the role.”

“Our greatest wish has always been to have Susan Sarandon star with Nick Nolte in Graves,” stated Kevin Beggs, Chairman, Lionsgate Television Group. “To have two such brilliant and accomplished actors headline one of the first original series for EPIX is a dream come true.”

The Plot:

Sarandon will play Margaret Graves, the wife of former U.S. President Richard Graves (Nolte), who decides to follow her own political ambitions just as her husband embarks on a Don Quixote-like journey to right the wrongs of his administration.
