CinemaCon: Sony Shows Off ‘Spectre’, ‘Pixels’ and ‘Goosebumps’ Footage

CinemaCon Sony Presentation Recap
Daniel Craig in ‘Spectre’

Sony Pictures’ presentation at the 2015 CinemaCon in Vegas kicked off with President of Worldwide Distribution Rory Bruer talking about the company’s vision while also tossing out a few jokes about the troubles caused by hackers in 2014. Bruer and Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman both thanked the exhibitors for sticking by Sony throughout the year, especially during The Interview controversy. And in a recurring theme, both stressed the importance of getting Sony’s films before movie fans on big screens as they’re meant to be seen.

The studio bucked the trend of bringing in actors to talk about the upcoming theatrical releases and instead had directors of their upcoming slate of films come in and speak to the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) members during the Sony presentation on April 22nd at the Coliseum at Caesars Palace. Here’s a recap of Sony’s presentation:

The Walk: Robert Zemeckis was the first director to be introduced, on hand to discuss The Walk starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and show off a new trailer. Zemeckis said it was great to be back at CinemaCon, telling the theater owners that he prefers to see movies on a really, really big screen – the bigger, the better. He said he was passionate about directing The Walk, which is based on the true story of Philippe Petit’s 1974 illegal high-wire walk between New York’s Twin Towers. Zemeckis also stressed that he wants the film to be seen in IMAX 3D in order to get the full effect of the story. The new footage showcased Gordon-Levitt and included some shots that might be difficult to watch for those who are afraid of heights.

Pixels: Introducing director Chris Columbus, Bruer said Pixels is one of the most streamed trailers of all time. Columbus said Adam Sandler told him to look at the script and he immediately fell in love with it, saying it’s a big summer movie that’s not a sequel, doesn’t feature anyone wearing spandex, and isn’t based on a board game. He also said that he loved having the chance to work with two incredible casts. One featuring Sandler, Peter Dinklage, and Josh Gad, and the other made up of classic video game characters including Pac Man and Donkey Kong. “Each video game character could have a movie on their own,” joked Columbus before showing never-before-seen footage that featured Donkey Kong, much more of Dinklage’s character, and highlighted the humor.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk: Ang Lee just started production on the film in Georgia and wasn’t able to make it to Vegas. Instead, he sent along a video message with details on the film starring Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, and Kristen Stewart. Lee said he’s redefining what is possible in filmmaking with Billy Lynn’s, shooting on Sony cameras in 3D at 120 frames per second. He’s the first to do it and believes the future of filmmaking is exciting and will provide audiences with a new type of cinematic experience. (no footage was screened)

Hotel Transylvania 2

Hotel Transylvania 2: Genndy Tartakovsky kicked off his portion of the presentation by saying how honored he was to be sharing the stage with legendary filmmakers. He said it took him back to the ’70s when he first came to America and saw his first movie in a theater, Jungle Book. That film transported him and made him fall in love with movies, and it’s what made him want to become an animator and director. And when Hotel Transylvania premiered in theaters, he sat in the audience and listened to the reactions, happy that all generations were laughing at the same jokes. He’s excited to return to Hotel Transylvania with this sequel, and said new cast member Keegan-Michael Key is hilarious.

Tartakovsky also admitted to being intimated by having Mel Brooks as part of the sequel’s cast and was nervous about directing him. The film’s about 12 weeks from being finished, and the footage screened, much of which is in the previously released trailer, was not the final product.

Goosebumps: Producer Neal Moritz and director Rob Letterman represented Goosebumps at CinemaCon, with Moritz using part of their time to thank the theater owners for their support of Furious 7, and he made the crowd repeat his new favorite word, “billion”. Turning his attention to Goosebumps, Moritz said he’s proud of the film and believes it will launch the studio’s next big franchise. Letterman, who was a newbie to CinemaCon, said he was inspired by watching Amblin films as a kid and stole some ideas from those films to put into Goosebumps. A work-in-progress clip with the abominable snowman and the Wolfman was screened, and it was met with enthusiastic applause.

The following films screened new trailers without any introductions:

Aloha with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and Rachel McAdams
Ricki and the Flash starring Meryl Streep
The Perfect Guy with Michael Ealy and Sanaa Lathan
The 5th Wave with Chloe Grace Moretz and Maggie Siff
Concussion starring Will Smith
X-Mas with Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie
Money Monster starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Jack O’Connell

Sony played a promo reel featuring films heading to theaters in the future:

Ghostbusters
Angry Birds
Smurfs
Underworld 5
Resident Evil 6
Equalizer 2

And the presentation wrapped up with a new pivotal scene from Spectre which contained a huge spoiler that we won’t reveal. Director Sam Mendes introduced it saying he’s halfway through the shoot and hopes it will match or exceed Skyfall‘s massive box office take.

CinemaCon: Warner Bros Brings Lots of Stars, Lots of Trailers

2015 CinemaCon: Warner Bros Presentation Recap
CHRISTINA APPLEGATE as Debbie Griswold, SKYLER GISONDO as James Griswold, ED HELMS as Rusty Griswold, STEELE STEBBINS as Kevin Griswold, CHEVY CHASE as Clark Griswold and BEVERLY D’ANGELO as Ellen Griswold in New Line Cinema’s comedy “VACATION,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Warner Bros Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation was easily the most star-studded of the 2015 event, with everyone from Magic Mike XXL cast members to Sly Stallone to Man From U.N.C.L.E.’s Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer taking the stage at Caesars Palace to promote the studio’s upcoming slate of films. CinemaCon is the annual gathering of theater owners and studios normally bring out their big guns to help hype their slate of feature films.

Given the fact Warner Bros had more films to promote than any other studio represented at the Las Vegas gathering, it was appropriate they brought in more big-name stars to help build the buzz on their lineup.

Taking the stage to talk about that huge slate was Warner Bros Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara who said he was incredibly proud of his studio’s lineup of films. Tsujihara acknowledged that WB is bucking the trend by increasing its slate of films in production while other major studios are decreasing the films they greenlight. Tsujihara also said the key to the new releases are 10 films from DC, three LEGO movies, and at least three Fantastic Beasts/J.K. Rowling’s projects. The broad slate of films means the studio can continue its relationships with acclaimed filmmakers including Clint Eastwood who scored the biggest box office success of his lengthy career with American Sniper.

After discussing Warner Bros Pictures’ outlook for the future, Mario Lopez took the stage to handle the job of introducing clips and talent from WB’s 2015 and 2016 films. Here’s a recap of Warner Bros Pictures’ film presentation:

Hot Pursuit: Stars Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara were first up, promoting their road trip comedy which finds Witherspoon playing a cop who is charged with protecting Vergara. The pair joked that because they look so much alike it would be easy to confuse who is who. They also traded jokes about not being able to understand one another’s accents and said they had fun shooting the film which, per Vergara, features strong and sexy female characters (she stressed the ‘strong’).

Mad Max: Fury Road: Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult, and Charlize Theron were on hand to show off a trailer for the film. While Hardy portrays the film’s titular character, it was Hoult and Theron who handled the very quick introduction.

San Andreas: Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino were greeted by enthusiastic applause (Johnson’s no stranger to the CinemaCon crowd) as they hit the stage to promote the big-budget disaster movie. Playing to the crowd, Johnson pointed out that most of the people in attendance seemed to have been enjoying Vegas’ free alcohol. He also compared losing his virginity to an earthquake, teasing Gugino that she was there for both events and saying it was the “best 20 seconds of her life.”

Turning their attention back to discussing San Andreas, Gugino said the film’s an amazing combination of elements and is an epic, massive, incredible adventure that’s also about a fractured family. Gugino won the crowd’s support by proclaiming this is a movie meant to be seen in a big theater. Johnson added, “We wanted to make a movie that shook your theater.”

Entourage: The main stars of Entourage – Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon and Jerry Ferrara – joined their director Doug Ellin to briefly chat about how making the movie was like getting back together with your high school buddies. They then revealed a lengthy trailer with a bit of new footage.

Magic Mike XXL: Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, and Joe Manganiello were among the Magic Mike sequel stars to come to the Coliseum stage in Vegas. They were fully clothed but teased the audience with what appeared to be the beginning of one of their strip tease routines. Unfortunately, they stopped before any actual skin was exposed. All of the talent from the films represented had key talking points, and Tatum pointed out that the Magic Mike crew also had been provided info on what to say about their movie. Laughing, Tatum said talking points weren’t really necessary as it’s a film about male strippers – and that’s all anyone really needs to know. A new trailer debuted with the hashtag #comeagain prominently displayed.

Vacation: I confess I wasn’t excited about the prospect of a new Vacation film after all these years, but the trailer won me over. It was genuinely funny and in keeping with the tone of the original Griswold adventures. Ed Helms and Christina Applegate represented the comedy, with Helms kicking off their trailer introduction by saying, “Vegas…I’ve never been here before.”

Helms recalled how he saw the original film by spending his hard-earned babysitting money on a ticket to watch it in a theater. Applegate countered with her memory of being famous at the time and getting a screener sent to her which she watched with Molly Ringwald. Helms said this new film finds his character and Christina’s getting into more trouble than Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo did in the original movies. Plus, this new Vacation has Chris Hemsworth and his abs. And in the trailer, those abs are put on display as a shirtless Hemsworth poses beside Helms and Applegate’s bed. Of all the trailers screened during the presentation, the Vacation trailer received the loudest applause.

Man From U.N.C.L.E. – Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer were dressed in expensive tailored suits to present a new trailer for the 2015 version of the classic TV series. Looking handsome, Cavill and Hammer said director Guy Ritchie captured the humor of the show and dubbed this new take Man From U.N.C.L.E. for a new generation. Cavill and Hammer had a hard time figuring out who was supposed to say what off the teleprompter, but eventually made it through their introduction in order to show off a new trailer.

Black Mass: Johnny Depp’s busy filming the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie so it was up to director Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart) to promote the upcoming film based on the life of Whitey Bulger. Johnny Depp plays Bulger and at CinemaCon Cooper said he delivers a “performance for the ages.” The trailer was impressive and showed that after a series of missteps, Depp could be back on track. Cooper further explained Black Mass is a film about the bonds of brotherhood and loyalty set around the largest scandal in the history of the FBI.

Creed: Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, and director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) were on hand to discuss the new Rocky film that focuses on Apollo Creed’s son, played by Jordan. Sly revealed that he believed Rocky’s journey was over until he heard Coogler’s idea about passing the torch on to Apollo’s son. Stallone emphasized this is not Rocky 7 but instead is a beginning of a new journey. “My story has been told,” said Stallone. Coogler explained the idea came from his father’s love of the Rocky movies, and said that that relationship with his own father formed his life. And Coogler also said that while he’s releasing this trailer for the CinemaCon audience, he’s still busy editing the movie.

Point Break: Point Break showed off an extreme sports-heavy trailer that proves this isn’t a remake of the 1991 film. A few members of the stunt team were in the audience and stood up to accept applause, while cast members Luke Bracey and Teresa Palmer were introduced but didn’t speak about the movie.

Trailers were also screened for Into the Heart of the Sea, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Pan, The Intern, The Gallows, and We Are Your Friends without cast members in attendance.

New Line Cinema announced filming is now underway on How to Be Single starring 50 Shades of Grey‘s Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Alison Brie, Damon Wayans, Jr., and Leslie Mann. The cast also includes Jason Mantzoukas, Anders Holm, Nicholas Braun, and Jake Lacey.

Christian Ditter (Love, Rosie) is directing from a script by Dana Fox and Abby Kohn & Marc Silverstein, adapted from Liz Tucillo’s book. Drew Barrymore, Nancy Juvonen, Michele Weiss, and Marcus Viscidi are on board as executive producers.

Filming is currently taking place in and around New York City.

The Plot:

There’s a right way to be single, a wrong way to be single, and then…there’s Alice. And Robin. Lucy. Meg. Tom. David. New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, be it a love connection, a hook-up, or something in the middle. And somewhere between the teasing texts and one-night stands, what these unmarrieds all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love. Sleeping around in the city that never sleeps was never so much fun.

J.J. Abrams and Chewbacca Take the Twizzler Challenge

J.J. Abrams and Chewbacca Take the Twizzler Challenge

Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams made out with Chewbecca, but there was a very good reason behind their lip-lock. Jimmy Kimmel challenged the director and his furry Wookie star to participate in the Twizzler Challenge in support of Autism Awareness Month.

The idea is to recreate the famous Lady and the Tramp scene in which the animated canine characters eat the same piece of spaghetti and end up in a kiss, but substituting in a Twizzler for the spaghetti.

After accepting the challenge, and after Abrams wound up with a piece of Chewie’s hair in his mouth, Abrams and Chewbacca challenged Jennifer Aniston and Guillermo to take the challenge.
