‘Unfriended’ Interview: Shelley Hennig, Will Peltz, and Nelson Greaves

The basic concept behind Universal Pictures’ Unfriended was to create a horror film in which the story plays out via computer screens. Producer Timur Bekmambetov is a regular Skype user, even going as far as to Skype with Unfriended writer Nelson Greaves while Bekmambetov was actively directing a scene in another movie. “Timur understood from the very beginning that a movie could take place on a computer desktop,” explained Greaves at the 2015 WonderCon in Anaheim, CA. “It was his idea from the beginning. One night we’re talking late at the office and suddenly it snapped, ‘It’s a horror film! Use the limitations and restrictions of a computer desktop the same way that the Blair Witch Project used the limitations of the same camera.’ And suddenly, it just made sense for us.”

The audience can connect to what’s going on on-screen because the basic situations and setups are so relatable. The target audience knows about Facebook, Twitter, and Skype, and that helps to put the viewer into the shoes of one of the characters on screen. “The reason it works and I think the reason it’s scary is because of the authenticity of it,” offered Greaves. “You come to see the movie and you say, ‘Hey, I know that. That’s my desktop. That’s how I use this program.’ Without that, the movie wouldn’t work.”

Shelley Hennig says that she’s always been careful about what she put out on social media, so working on Unfriended hasn’t dramatically altered her approach to tweeting. “I’ve always been super private on social media. I put out what’s important to me and to promote the TV show that I’m on or the movie that I did. I use it as a business. I don’t really use it for personal things, so nothing’s really changed for myself. But I am a little more cautious for other people.”

“I think one of the scariest things about our movie and one of the best experiences about it is waking up the next day, signing on to your computer and suddenly being like, ‘Wait a second… Suddenly I don’t feel safe here.’ And after seeing the movie when you hear the sound of a Facebook notification, your skin suddenly bristles and you’re suddenly getting chills,” said Greaves. “When you get an incoming Skype call, suddenly jumping at the sound of an incoming Skype call. And I think people will come to see this movie and they will never look at their computers the same way again.”

The shooting process was complicated as three days into production they changed things up and decided to shoot the movie in long takes with the actors having to react to what was going on. After first shooting the script exactly as it was, they watched it and felt it was a little stale. “We started to realize we had to switch things up. ‘Let’s keep people on their feet. Let’s get real reactions to real horrific things happening.’ And from that point on we did long takes exclusively,” revealed Greaves. “Most of the takes were about 30 minutes long. The one that’s in the movie, the hero take that is the movie, is a full 85 minutes long.”

The decision to do the lengthy takes meant that the actors were put in different rooms in a house, each with their own computer screen, and each shooting their own scenes without being able to see or work with their co-stars. Will Peltz agreed that it was a bit crazy to work on, adding, “It’s exhausting but it’s very helpful as an actor to start in one place and end in another – and to have that very clear ending. And not to start down it, stop, and start up again and find that emotional point that you’re going through. It’s challenging, it’s very exhausting, but going through so many of those takes in a day I felt like was really a unique way to work. It was definitely conducive to the reality of the film.”

“If you think about it, at the end of the day it is a horror film so some things are fantastical and hard to believe. But when you start at the beginning and go all the way through, you’re in it. It takes a lot to come out of it. So I originally asked if we could do it in one take because it was getting difficult for me to start and stop. Doing it all in one, I think we all benefited from it. Everybody was so good at improv’ing and we’d done six days rehearsals,” explained Hennig. “We knew Nelson’s story and he would let us play. We had ear pieces and if he let us play for too long, he would just name the topic of the part of the script that we had to get back to, and he got us back on track.”

“At the end of 85 minutes, the characters have been in a horrific state for 25 minutes. The first time you jump at a scare is very different from how you act after you’ve been in the torture chamber for 35 minutes,” added Greaves. “In that big take at the end, Shelley and the rest of the characters are…it’s almost like an insanity. It’s almost like they’re no longer able to process things. It’s not just jumping at scares. It’s more truly authentic I think to a real experience.”

Unfriended is directed by Levan Gabriadze and opens in theaters on April 17, 2015.

One day after Veep and Silicon Valley premiered their fourth and second seasons, respectively, HBO has announced both shows will return for another season. The half-hour comedies kicked off their current seasons immediately following the premiere of Game of Thrones fifth season, drawing in big numbers and earning early renewal orders.

Veep and Silicon Valley are terrific series, and I’m immensely proud that they will return to HBO next year,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “Along with Game of Thrones and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, both of which have already been renewed for 2016, they give HBO a stellar Sunday night like no other.”

Veep stars Emmy-winning Julia Louis-Dreyfus as President Selina Meyer and, no, HBO isn’t changing the name of the series to reflect her new position as the first woman U.S. President. The season four cast also includes Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Reid Scott, Matt Walsh, Timothy Simons, Sufe Bradshaw, Kevin Dunn, Gary Cole and Sam Richardson.

Silicon Valley starring Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Josh Brener, Martin Starr, Kumail Nanjiani, and Zach Woods was created by Mike Judge and Alec Berg. Season two also features Amanda Crew, Matt Ross, Suzanne Cryer and Jimmy O. Yang.

The next installment in FX’s American Horror Story has snagged returning AHS player Sarah Paulson. The network confirmed today that Paulson will be a part of the American Horror Story: Hotel cast. Paulson has been involved in every AHS season, kicking off with Murder House and continuing with Asylum, Coven, and Freak Show.

There’s no word yet on who Paulson will be playing this time around, but it’s almost guaranteed it will be less taxing on her than playing Siamese twins was in AHS: Freak Show.

Paulson joins a cast that includes Kathy Bates, Lady Gaga, Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson, Wes Bentley, and Chloë Sevigny. Filming on season five of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series will begin this summer, with FX eyeing an October premiere date.

Being a part of the American Horror Story ensemble has earned Paulson two Emmy nominations, and in 2011 she picked up the Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries for her work in AHS: Asylum.

Together with them and Disney, there are many reasons why I am so excited about this joint venture.”

‘iZombie’ Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright Interview

Series co-creators/executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright joined iZombie cast members Rose McIver, David Anders, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, and Robert Buckley at the 2015 WonderCon to talk about the new series that’s turned out to be a big hit for The CW. Airing on Tuesday nights at 9pm ET/PT, iZombie has caught on with audiences, and even Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, the creative minds behind the Vertigo comics that inspired the series, have responded positively to the way the characters have come to life on the small screen.

iZombie follows Liv Moore (Rose McIver), a medical resident who was turned into a zombie while at a party and who now works at the coroner’s office in order to have easy access to brains. Her medical examiner boss (Rahul Kohli) knows she’s a member of the undead, and not only is he fascinated by that fact, he’s also sworn to keep the truth a secret. Complicating matters are an ex-fiance (Robert Buckley) who has no idea why she broke off their engagement and a police detective (Malcolm Goodwin) who thinks she’s psychic and that’s how she’s able to solve recent homicides. (It’s actually through visions she has after eating the brains of the murder victims.)

At WonderCon, Thomas (Veronica Mars) said the series has presented him with challenges he’s never faced before, including working with large amounts of blood, violent scenes, and extensive visual effects. “We’ve got zombies and blood and shotguns and people in expensive zombie makeup,” explained Thomas. “We did our first full-fledged […]Romero zombie, and I’m like, ‘This is like a $20,000 hit to do that.'”

Ruggiero-Wright joked that in The Walking Dead, they actually kill people and make them zombies because it’s cheaper. “And people are willing to do it! They’re like, ‘I just want to be on the show. I’ll die,'” said Ruggiero-Wright, laughing.

If you’ve been watching the show, you know the zombie stuck in the well looked different from either Liv or the other main zombie, Blaine (David Anders). It’s all because of brain eating, confirmed Thomas. “If Liv quit eating brains, that’s what she’d become. Marcy is the cautionary tale. If Liv could not get her hands on brains, or if any of them who want that specter, that fear…we don’t know exactly how many – well, we know how many zombies are wandering around Seattle, but Liv doesn’t. If they quit eating them, that is what they become. And the potential not only for Liv to see her fate but the potential for a zombie apocalypse, we wanted to put that in people’s minds.”

So, how soon will the audience find out how many zombies are actually out there? “You won’t find out this season,” replied Thomas. “You will know there are more. You will meet more zombies.”

“But you won’t have an exact head count,” added Ruggiero-Wright.

But Ruggiero-Wright and Thomas did promise that by the end of the season, the audience may come a little bit closer to understanding what triggered the zombie outbreak. “We’re going to go down the path with Ravi developing the cure. That’s going to happen,” revealed Thomas. “You’re going to learn a lot more about Blaine’s business model. In fact, you’re going to be learning about Blaine’s business model very soon.”

After a little discussion between the two about what can be disclosed about Blaine at this point in the series’ first season, Thomas said, “Blaine has a business model. He finds wealthy people who can pay top dollar for brains, turns them into zombies, and then charges them for delivery.”

“It’s like creating drug addicts,” said Ruggiero-Wright.

“And part of the question is, where is he getting those people? And he tends to try to get people who will not be missed. And those people, and you’ve seen a bit of this as well, tend to be the sort of people that Major works with in his job at a home for runaway teenagers. So everything builds toward a showdown,” said Thomas.

Thomas also revealed that over the course of the season, the episodes will become less murder case-of-the-week driven. “There’s so much fun in the zombie mythology… I’m not saying that we threw out the case of the week, I would just say that maybe five or six pages at the beginning of the season have now been shifted over to the zombie world, the zombie mythology.”

John Stephens on ‘Gotham,’ Villains, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Lucius Fox

John Stephens Interview on Gotham Season 1

Gotham writer/executive producer John Stephens promises the final episodes of season one are going to reveal major changes in key characters. Fox’s Gotham will be back for season two, and as this first season heads toward its finale, characters who’ve been heading toward what we know to be their ultimate fate will move still closer into transitioning into the characters Batman fans expect them to become.

At the 2015 WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, Stephens explained how the writers decided when was the right time to introduce each of the villains we’ve seen make an appearance in Gotham thus far. In a word: “Gut.”

“I mean, really it was kind of an instinct. A lot of it is when we map out the season in the writers’ room when we’re looking at it all, you want their storylines to climax,” explained Stephens. “For example, Penguin’s had a really huge story for this period and he’s going to be resting for a while, so then there’s a great two episode arc to bring in Scarecrow. It’s like all these intersecting sine curves and cosine curves – that’s math – that are going through the season, it’s really just trying to balance everything.

You kind of get those feelings too where you tell a Falcone/Maroni story for like two episodes, which can feel very mob-y mob-y, so then you’re saying, ‘Now I really want my story to feel more supervillainy.’ So, we’ll do a Jonathan Strange or a Red Hood episode, something like that. It really is like a feel.”

As far as providing an overview of what’s going to happen for the remainder of season one, Stephens was more than happy to talk about what’s coming up – without giving too much away.

“There’s going to be a three episode arc that begins in 19 and goes through 21 which is Gordon’s going to be investigating a serial killer that’s going to impact him in a really personal way that’s going to have repercussions all through season two. It’s really damaging. The Penguin story which has been sort of like the rise of The Penguin is going to come to a bloody and dark conclusion in the finale.

We see all of his plans and machinations finally erupt and rip Gotham apart. And we see Gordon’s going to be budding heads with the establishment side of GCPD as well. And then we see other characters who are coming forward and doing things that show sides of them as they take those evolutionary steps forward to becoming the people they’re going to become – Selina, Nygma, and Bruce – all of those characters take that big jump forward of, ‘Oh, I see you’re actually on the path to becoming the person you’re going to be, the person we all know you will be.'”

Speaking of big jumps forward, Stephens said it wasn’t that difficult to hold on to the ultimate outcome for these villains and allow the characters to develop.

“A lot of times in telling the origin story we’ve taken it in steps even further back. In telling the Jonathan Crane origin story we actually focused on the father, not on Crane himself. And, we try to take a lot of lateral steps too. Like, everybody knows the Red Hood story so we just took a different Red Hood story where we try to say, ‘Let’s take all of these and go even further back in time,'” said Stephens.

He added: “Honestly, it’s always one of those things where we say we know we can’t go there, so what’s the most interesting version that we can tell here that would make the journey there? As if we all know that we’re driving to Chicago, but on the way to Chicago, you’re like, ‘Let’s stop in Reno. This is actually going to be a lot of fun. Oh my god, we got shot in Reno.'”

Jada Pinkett Smith’s announced she’s not planning on coming back for season two, but Stephens cushioned that declaration with an “I don’t know if she’s going to come back or not” answer at WonderCon.

“I feel like you guys have to watch the finale and see what happens. We also live in a world in which characters can come back frequently. And also DC has been really flexible about characters who we in the canon know, ‘Oh, they survive because they have to do X later.’ Those characters as we’ll see going forward even in this season, they are not involved. Some of those characters who everyone will expect to survive, will not survive which I think will make things exciting. Because I think when you actually see that the characters actually have a target on their back and you know that nobody is safe, then you can watch that ‘name’ or whatever gets reinvented later on in another fashion.”

But we’re not done with Fish’s story this season, as she’ll be back with all the other characters before the end of season one. “Obviously Penguin’s final rise couldn’t happen without Fish being a part of it. We’ll see the two of them kind of come back together,” revealed Stephens.

Although Stephens was very careful with what he was willing to talk about when asked if there are any particular locations from the Batman lore that we might be seeing soon (like the Batcave), he confirmed that’s a possibility. “Yes, there are some major locations in the lore that we will see this season. I’m not going to say more than that, but you will see it in the next couple of episodes. It’s going to be a part of what I was talking about in those big character steps forward.”

Stephens also enthusiastically confirmed Lucius Fox will appear this season. “He’s played by Chris Chalk who is a great actor and also a fan of the material too which is always great to have on the show. He has a small appearance this year, but he’s going to play a much larger role next season. As we’ve seen young Bruce investigating what’s going on with his family’s company, that mystery will deepen next year and Lucius starts to play a role. Bruce doesn’t know who he is and doesn’t know what his intentions are. They find their way toward a relationship next year, and he helps him uncover the mystery.”
