Wicked and Conclave lead the list of the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards, earning 11 nominations each, followed by Dune: Part Two and Emilia Pérez with 10. The top four nominated films will go head-to-head in the Best Picture and Best Director categories.
The Brutalist picked up nine nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Adrien Brody), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce). Anora and The Substance received seven nominations, with Sing Sing and Nickel Boys scoring five nominations. Nosferatu, Challengers, and Gladiator II earned four nominations, and A Complete Unknown and A Real Pain collected three nominations each.
Winners will be announced during the Critics Choice Awards gala airing live on E! on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 7pm ET/PT. UPDATE: The Critics Choice Awards have been postponed due to the devastating fires throughout Los Angeles. The new date is January 26th. UPDATE #2: The CCAs have moved again, settling on Friday, Friday 7th.

The team behind Friday Night Lights returns for a new adaptation of the popular drama. Set up at Peacock, original FNL showrunner and executive producer Jason Katims will guide the new take in the same capacity. Peter Berg, director of the 2004 film based on H.G. Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, developed the original series and will executive produce.
Additional executive producers include Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer (producer of the original film) and Kristen Zolner. The series is in the development stage and has Universal Television attached to produce.
“Following a devastating hurricane, a rag-tag high school football team and their damaged interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship, becoming a beacon of light for their town,” reads Peacock’s synopsis.
The original Friday Night Lights series premiered in October 2006 and ran for five seasons. The series starred Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, and Brad Leland, and earned three Primetime Emmys.
Remember back when Madam Web came out and we all hoped Sony would do better with its Marvel properties with Kraven the Hunter? Yeah, we need to keep hoping. It seems as if Sony just doesn’t even care about these Marvel movies anymore.
Kraven the Hunter is about a Russian man named Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson from Nosferatu) who survived a lion attack as a boy when a girl named Calypso (Ariana DeBose from I.S.S.) gave him a special elixir. The potion not only saved his life, but gave him incredible strength, speed, and agility. As a grown man, he decides to use these new skills to become Kraven the Hunter, a vigilante who goes after the worst of the worst criminals.
Unfortunately for Kraven, his father, Nikolai (Russell Crowe from The Exorcist), is himself one of these worst of the worst, and soon enough, The Hunter, with help from Calypso, finds himself embroiled in a plot to save his brother, Dmitri (Thelma’s Fred Hechinger), from going down the same path as their father. This puts Kraven at odds with supervillains like Rhino (The Brutalist’s Alessandro Nivola) and The Foreigner (Christopher Abbott from Poor Things).
Directed by J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, Margin Call), Kraven the Hunter was written by Richard Wenk (the Equalizer movies) along with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (who both also worked on the screenplays for Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone). The character is based on the Spider-Man nemesis of the same name, but Kraven the Hunter hardly feels like a Spider-Man movie. The webslinger does not make an appearance, although some of his other adversaries do, and Calypso is seen at one point reading the Daily Bugle’s website. So, we’re in the same universe. But it’s not the same kind of movie.
Kraven is one of the cooler and more formidable Spider-Man villains, so Kraven the Hunter feels a bit like a wasted opportunity. The story itself is silly, but the film’s treatment of that silliness is deadpan serious, so there’s an odd tonal competition. Rather than completely giving itself over to the cornball comic book-ness of the plot, the movie tries to be a hard-boiled thriller. It doesn’t understand its own assignment.
Except for Russell Crowe. As Nikolai Kravinoff, Crowe gets it. His stoic expressions and Boris Badenov accent are totally in on the joke that the rest of the movie doesn’t know that it’s telling. While his castmates, even the guys playing shapeshifters and human rhinoceroses, are trying to find their thespian motivations, Crowe is chewing every stick of the scenery he steals.
The script itself doesn’t do the actors any favors. Just as was the case with Madam Web, much of the dialogue feels emotionless and generic, almost as if it was written by AI. Which, honestly, in this cinematic climate, wouldn’t be too much of a surprise. But it also could just be that not even the writers care too much about these characters anymore aside from making a movie to hold onto the rights.
The filmmaking is inconsistent as well. Some of the stunt work is exciting, just as one would expect from a movie like this, but even the fight scenes are drowned in computer-generated effects. And the CG is bad. Really bad. The CG animals that Kraven protects and befriends are particularly unconvincing. It would be a struggle to find a movie with worse CG lions and bison than Kraven the Hunter.
Kraven the Hunter doesn’t quite know what kind of movie it’s trying to be. It functions as an origin story for Kraven, but never really digs into the nuts and bolts of the character, it just shows a bit of his backstory before it sends him off on a side quest. Certain aspects, such as his relationships with Calypso and Dimitri, are underdeveloped, so by the time the audience needs to care about these characters, they don’t. Hand-to-hand combat only goes so far. Audiences need to care about a story, and in the case of Kraven the Hunter, they don’t. It’s a mess.
Kraven is a great character, and even this Aaron Taylor-Johnson incarnation has potential. There are all sorts of directions Sony can go with this antihero. They can pit him against Spider-Man, team him up with Spider-Man, toss him into a Sinister Six movie, or even explore his children who picked up his hunting habits in the comics. But whatever they wind up doing with Kraven the Hunter, let’s just hope it turns out better than Kraven the Hunter.

The American Cinema Editors (ACE) announced the nominees for the 75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards, representing the best editing in films, television, and documentaries in 2024. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Civil War will be competing alongside awards season favorites Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Emilia Perez in the best drama film category. Wicked and The Substance compete in the comedy film category, along with Anora, Challengers, and A Real Pain.
Wicked‘s director, Jon M. Chu, will be recognized with the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, an honorary award given to a filmmaker who “exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch will receive Career Achievement Awards during the 2025 ACE Eddie Awards ceremony.
Winners will be announced on Saturday, January 18, 2025. (The ceremony was moved to March 14, 2025 due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.)

Author and podcast host Steven Rinella dives into some of America’s strangest mysteries on the History Channel’s Hunting History with Steven Rinella. The eight-episode season premieres on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 10pm ET/PT.
Among the mysteries explored on season one are the cattle mutilations in the American West and what really happened to skyjacker D.B. Cooper.

We’ve reached the end. After 14 seasons and 293 episodes, the Reagan family’s story is ending with CBS’s Blue Bloods season 14 episode 18, “End of Tour.” Directed by Alex Zakrzewskiis from a script by Siobhan Byrne O’Connor and Kevin Wade, episode 18 will air on Friday, December 13, 2024 at 10pm ET/PT.
Tom Selleck returns to lead the final season’s cast as Frank Reagan. Donnie Wahlberg stars as Danny Reagan, Bridget Moynahan plays Erin Reagan, Will Estes is Jamie Reagan, Len Cariou is Henry Reagan, Marisa Ramirez plays Maria Baez, and Vanessa Ray stars as Eddie Janko.
“End of Tour” Plot: It’s all hands on deck for the Reagan family, as they race to stop deadly mayhem in the city when the gangs of New York unite together to demand amnesty for the release of their imprisoned members and those awaiting trial, in the historic series finale episode. Academy Award nominee Edward James Olmos guest stars.
Blue Bloods is a drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner, and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as chief. A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son, Danny, a seasoned detective, family man, and Iraq War vet who, on occasion, uses dubious tactics to solve cases with his partner and new mother, Detective Maria Baez.
Erin, the middle daughter, is a New York assistant D.A. who serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father, while also pursuing a run for district attorney. Jamie is the youngest Reagan, a Harvard Law graduate and the family’s golden boy. Unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and follow in the family footsteps as a cop. He’s found a friend and ally in his wife, Eddie, who keeps him on his toes, and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force.
Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) starred in the original 28 Days Later, executive produces the much-anticipated sequel, and is quite possibly a zombie in 28 Years Later. The buzz on social media is that Murphy appears in the trailer, rising from a cornfield at the 1:48 minute point.
While Murphy’s role remains unconfirmed, the trailer does show what the world’s like 10,228 days after the apocalypse.
“Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. The sequel stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. Producers include Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernard Bellew.
28 Days Later was released in June 2003 and grossed $82 million off an $8 million budget during its theatrical run. 28 Years Later will open in theaters on June 20, 2025.
‘DICK CLARK’S NEW YEAR’S ROCKIN’ EVEN WITH RYAN SEACREST’ (Disney)
Alanis Morissette and Blake Shelton have joined the lineup of artists set to ring in the new year on the incredibly cumbersomely-titled Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025. Reneé Rapp, Dasha, DJ Cassidy’s Pass The Mic Live! starring Ja Rule, Luis Fonsi, TLC, Fat Joe, Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh, Ernest, HARDY, Kesha, Laufey, Natasha Bedingfield, and T-Pain will also bid farewell to 2024 during this year’s holiday special.
New Year’s Rockin’ Eve will air live on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at 8pm ET on ABC. Dick Clark Productions and iHeartMedia are partnering again this year to stream the end-of-the-year special on 150 iHeartRadio stations nationwide. Ryan Seacrest returns as host for the 20th year, with Rita Ora joining him in Times Square and Dayanara Torres co-hosting in Puerto Rico.

Netflix and Shondaland just released the first official photo from The Residence, a murder mystery created by Paul William Davies (Scandal) and inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s novel. The eight-episode season premieres on March 20, 2025.
“The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion. Uzo Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp, a consulting detective for the Metropolitan Police Department,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Known for her wry humor, relentless pursuit of truth, and sharp eye for human behavior, Cupp is the most sought-after detective in the world—and an avid birder to boot.
