VH1 is moving forward on a new original movie tentatively titled The Breaks and based on the book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop by Dan Charnas. Charnas’ bestseller, which examines the history of hip-hop, will be adapted for the screen by Charnas and Seith Mann (director of The Walking Dead, Homeland, The Wire). Mann’s also executive producing and directing the film that could, if it works out as VH1 anticipates, launch a series following its debut.
Filming’s expected to begin this spring with VH1 aiming for a fall premiere date.
“The Breaks has the hallmark of a successful VH1 film: a strong, authentic storyline that celebrates a musical moment,” stated Susan Levison, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Production, VH1. “The story covers a seminal time when some thought Hip-Hop was a passing fad – The Breaks will show how it became an enduring force. We can’t wait to share it with our viewers.”
The Plot:
The Breaks (WT) will chronicle the journey of Nikki, David and Deevee, three friends united by their love of hip-hop, as they work to make their big mark in the music industry. The film will travel viewers back to the summer of 1990 in New York City where the music industry’s artists and hustlers intersect in the dance clubs and the street corners of the still crime-ridden city. Nikki Jones is a brilliant recent grad who abandoned a scholarship to law school to pursue her dream of becoming a record exec. Her boyfriend, David Aaron, is the scrappy son of a legendary music producer who is unwilling to rest on his father’s laurels and notorious reputation. DeeVee is an aspiring producer on the hunt to find the next big rapper on the come-up.
Nikki fast talks her way into an internship at the premier hip-hop company, Fouray Entertainment and catches the eye of the label’s infamous founder, while David struggles at the city’s top R&B radio station whose celebrity DJ refuses to program real hip-hop. Meanwhile, DeeVee returns to his roots in the Fort Greene projects to scout for talent and runs into Ahm, a drug dealer with a lyrical gift whose talent could bring them all to the next level. But they will soon discover lives can be broken as fast as legends can be born.

72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (Photo by Art Streiber / NBC)
Tina Fey took part in the Netflix TCA Winter press event at Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California in support of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the new half-hour comedy series she co-created and executive produces with Robert Carlock, and in addition to talking about her new show, she also briefly chatted about another huge project on her plate: hosting the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 11th. Fey will be teaming up with her good friend Amy Poehler for the third time to gently poke fun at her fellow actors as co-hosts of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual shindig.
We’ll have more on our interview with Tina Fey closer to the March 6, 2015 premiere of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but for now here’s what Fey had to say about co-hosting the Globes during our interview at the TCAs:
Are you still nervous about hosting the Globes?
Tina Fey: “Sure. [Laughing] We haven’t written the show yet so we’ve got to hurry up.”
You’ve insinuated that this is your last time hosting the awards show…
Tina Fey: “This is for sure our last time. We did a three-year deal so this is our last one.”
Is there anything you definitely want to do on Sunday then?
Tina Fey: “Bottomless.”
You’ve made jokes about the wardrobe before. Do you have your wardrobe ready?
Tina Fey: “Oh, yes I’m ready to go. I’m bringing it.”
Do you overlap on taste and style choices with Amy Poehler?
Tina Fey: “Amy and I luckily get along very well in that way. We’re both really easygoing about it and we’re both really supportive of like, ‘What do you got? Okay, great. I’ll wear this.’ It couldn’t be a more pleasant pairing in that way.”
Who should be most scared in the audience?
Tina Fey: “Me, if I stepped out into the audience. No one should be scared! We don’t make anyone scared. That’s not how we do it.”
You’ve mentioned the last you ever had to be careful about a joke was on Weekend Update on SNL. Do you remember what that was?
Tina Fey: “Well, I just feel like everything in the early 2000s were just tricky topics. I can’t remember a specific joke.”
How do you make sure you don’t repeat yourself when you host a show three times?
Tina Fey: “There’s new movies, new things to talk about. And then, don’t do it more than three times!”
Warning: there will be spoilers in this Person of Interest article as it’s a recap and review of the 11th episode of season four titled “If-Then-Else.”
“Is something the matter, Miss Groves?” asks Finch (Michael Emerson). “It’s a trap!” replies Root (Amy Acker) as she, Finch, Reese (Jim Caviezel), and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) struggle to save the American economy from plummeting due to the A.I. master computer called Samaritan sabotaging the market numbers in the mid-season four opener of the CBS television crime series Person of Interest.
In part two of what CBS has been promoting as “the trilogy not to be missed,” Reese, Finch, Root, and Fusco have been trying to slow down the horrible chaos Samaritan has been creating all over New York in hopes of luring Finch’s computer out of hiding. Its latest trap is to plunge Wall Street into a financial crisis forcing Root, Finch, Reese, and Fusco to go to Wall Street and try to secretly install a device allowing Finch’s computer to set the numbers on the worldwide market right again and free of Samaritan’s reach. However, once inside and down in the basement of Wall Street – because that’s where most of the trading is actually done via computers – Root gets word from the computer that it’s a trap and the four heroes must run and find cover from Decima’s (the evil organization that put Samaritan online) hit squad.
Meanwhile, Shaw (Sarah Shahi), who’s been staying close to headquarters ever since her cover identity had been blown by Samaritan, is finally out and on special assignment on the subway trying to get close to a man who has a code to the entrance to the main computer room at Wall Street which Finch and Root will need in order to sneak into. But just when she’s about to make her move, a passenger devastated by the events on Wall Street reveals a bomb strapped to himself and tells everyone not to move or he’ll blow up the entire subway car.
Back in the bowels of Wall Street, Root, Finch, Reese, and Fusco are pinned down by gunfire. Seeing no way out, Root looks up at one of the security cameras that’s controlled by Finch’s computer and says, “Could use a little help, please.”
The Bottom Line:
Action-packed, intense, and tragic, Person of Interest season four episode 11 explodes with more shoot-outs and explosions than any episode this season and sees one of the main characters sacrifice him or herself to save the others…no, the identity of that character won’t be revealed here. The cold cloak and dagger game is now hot, with both sides raging war with Samaritan and with Decima using all their tricks in a big effort to destroy once and for all their enemies while Finch, Reese, and their friends fight to save both New York and themselves from Samaritan’s reach.
The performances are, of course, flawless. Caviezel, Emerson, Acker, Chapman, and Shahi portray their characters with just the right amount of urgency, tongue-in-cheek one-liners, and at times emotional impact. The scene where Finch gets shot and Root holds him is both shocking and moving (and, no, that’s not the sacrifice referred to in the above paragraph).
The style and pacing of this episode are unique and different from Person of Interest‘s usual approach, and the audience is shown almost all the action from Finch’s computer’s point of view. When the heroes are pinned down waiting for the computer to tell them their best strategy to accomplish their mission and escape, viewers get to see each one of the computer’s strategies and how it would play out. It’s Groundhog Day meets Person of Interest and it works surprisingly well.
With the loss of one of their own and Samaritan and Decima still incredibly strong and bent on their destruction, here’s looking forward to watching Finch, his supercomputer, and the rest of the gang find a way to not just survive but stop Samaritan and Decima once and for all.
Jamie Dorman in ‘The Fall’ season 2 (Photo courtesy of Netflix)
The Fall star Jamie Dornan’s poised to have very a huge 2015 career-wise. He’s got the lead role in the much-anticipated sexy film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey opening in theaters this Valentine’s Day and he’s also keeping busy doing other feature films including the dramatic film The 9th Life of Louis Drax based on the novel by Liz Jensen. But it was for Netflix’s second season of The Fall that I had the opportunity to grab a few minutes with Dornan along with a couple of other journalists.
Season two of the thriller is set to arrive on January 16, 2015 and during the winter TCA event, he talked about The Fall and his character as well as little on Fifty Shades and whether he’d like to reprise his role on Once Upon a Time.
The Fall Season 2 Plot: “Set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, season two picks up immediately from where series one left off, with Gibson in pursuit of Spector. A personal link from Spector’s past opens up some clues for Gibson but provokes Spector in a way that threatens to jeopardize the whole investigation. Gibson is forced to take greater risks, but the closer she comes to capturing him, the more Spector trespasses into her private world, delighting in taunting and provoking her. As the net gradually tightens around him, he becomes psychologically ever more dangerous and destructive.”
Jamie Dornan Interview
Are you prepared for how crazy this year is going to get for you or has it already begun?
Jamie Dornan: “Yeah, I don’t really know yet to be honest. I’m really only here to talk about The Fall so I guess so far this year feels pretty normal.”
Do you think Spector as a grief counselor understands that he is causing a lot of the trauma that he councils people for or has he completely compartmentalized it?
Jamie Dornan: “No, I think you’re dead-on. He’s all too aware of the damage he’s doing and I think that makes him all the more sinister, that he has an understanding of grief and how people deal with it and how to get people out of it. I think that makes it all the more sickening.”
Given your character and what’s in store, do you have a sense of how The Fall could continue past this season?
Jamie Dornan: “Yes, it’s something that I’ve spoken to Allan [Cubitt, writer/producer/director] about. I think he’s got different ideas about how it will continue either with me or if it will continue without me. That’s all sort of open. But, yeah, it’s whether there’s an appetite to have Gillian’s character try to track down another.”
What have you are the differences between shooting in Britain and America on TV shows?
Jamie Dornan: “I just think it’s a privilege to be able to do both, to work – for the start. Like, how many people do this for a living and don’t work, so I’m just so privileged to work at all. I agree with Gillian [Anderson] that there’s a very different feel to doing something in the U.K. to something here. I don’t think it’s as drastic as [Gillian] has said; I haven’t found it to be that black and white. I’ve had great experiences doing both and if I can I would like to continue doing both. I feel very tied to Ireland and the U.K. and that side of the world, so of course I want to keep doing stuff that’s sort of bedded there. But it’s fun to do America stuff as well.”
You’ve said in the past you want to do a role where you can keep your shirt on. What would be the ideal role for you?
Jamie Dornan: “The thing is you get like… [Laughing] Spector spends a lot of time with his shirt off but then I’ve sort of discovered that that is a kind of a thing as actors, they spend a lot of time with their shirt off. What did I watch recently? James Bond. I watched Skyfall again recently and Daniel Craig had his top off consistently. So yeah, maybe it’s just a thing that actors end up doing.”
So maybe a James Bond film would be something you’d like to do in the future?
Jamie Dornan: [Laughing] “I mean, what kid doesn’t grow up sort of pretending they’re James Bond. But that’s something I certainly don’t have control over.”
Is there any chance you might want to revisit Sheriff Graham in Once Upon a Time?
Jamie Dornan: “You know, I love those guys. They’re like family to me. I was actually filming something on the same lot as them just before Christmas. But, yeah, I don’t know. [Laughing] He’s kind of dead.”
But they do go back in time.
Jamie Dornan: “Yeah, I know, there are ways and means but that’s something that I’m not privy to.”
If you’re on the lot it doesn’t seem like it would be that tough to hop over and do a cameo or something. They wanted you last season and the fans really want you back.
Jamie Dornan: [Laughing] “Yeah, they’re hardcore fans as well.”
In addition to Fifty Shades of Grey you have a few films you’ve been working on. What can you say about them?
Jamie Dornan: “Yeah, I just finished in the middle of December this film called The 9th Life of Louis Drax directed by Alex Aja. It’s me and Aaron Paul, who’s obviously got big ties to Netflix, and Sarah Gadon. I think it’s going to come out this year. It’s a totally different departure. It’s kind of a suspense, almost supernatural thriller I would say, that’s how I would categorize it. But I’m so wary to categorize it because it’s kind of a hard film to pitch. I think that’s it… Oh, I did a very small part in a John Wells film.”
How do you handle roles that call for “sex appeal”?
Jamie Dornan: “It’s not something I think about, it’s written in.”
My female friends tell me it’s the scruff.
Jamie Dornan: “The beard? [Laughing] You’ve got the same.”
Speaking of sex appeal, Fifty Shades comes out on Valentine’s Day. Do you normally celebrate Valentine’s Day and what will you be doing on this particular one?
Jamie Dornan: “I’m not sure what I’m going to be doing. I’m probably going to be working, promoting stuff. I don’t really have a huge opinion about Valentine’s Day.”

Directed by David Gelb, the horror movie finds Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, Evan Peters (American Horror Story), and Sarah Bolger starring as medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life.
The trailer finds the group beginning their experiments on a dead dog, but they don’t stop there. After a freak accident, it’s Olivia Wilde’s character’s turn to come back from the dead.
The Lazarus Effect was produced by Jason Blum from Blumhouse Productions, Cody Zweig, Matt Kaplan and Jimmy Miller.
The Plot:
From masters of horror Blumhouse Productions – producer of The Purge, Insidious, and Sinister franchises – The Lazarus Effect follows a group of researchers led by Frank (Mark Duplass) and his fiancée Zoe (Olivia Wilde,) who’ve achieved the unimaginable – bringing the dead back to life. After a successful yet unsanctioned trial on a newly deceased animal, the team is ready to unveil their breakthrough to the world. When the dean of their university learns of their underground experiments, their project is unexpectedly shut down and their materials confiscated.
Frank, Zoe and their team (Donald Glover, Sarah Bolger, and Evan Peters) take matters into their own hands, launching a rogue attempt to recreate their experiment, during which things go terribly wrong and one of their own, Zoe, is horrifically killed. Fueled by terror and grief, Frank pushes them to do the unthinkable: attempt to resurrect their first human test subject.
Initially, the procedure appears a success, but the team soon realizes something is wrong with Zoe. As her strange new persona reveals itself, the team quickly becomes stuck in a gruesome reality. They are no longer faced with the question of whether they can bring someone back to life – but rather, the wrath of her return.

Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan returns for season two of his Nat Geo WILD series Cesar 911 on February 27, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT and Nat Geo’s also announced plans to air a two-hour special presentation of Millan’s live stage show, Cesar Millan: Leader of the Pack, on February 20th at 9pm. Titled Cesar Millan: Viva Las Vegas!, the special was filmed during Millan’s stage show at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the live stage show as well as footage of Cesar interacting with fans during the Las Vegas event.
Details on Cesar 911, Courtesy of Nat Geo WILD:
Each week on Cesar 911, Millan travels to a new neighborhood in desperate need of his help. He is summoned by co-workers, relatives, friends, and neighbors who “blow the whistle” on a four-legged menace that has turned their lives upside down. Right from the start, the stakes are higher than ever for the dogs, owners, and communities Millan is brought in to assist. The dog owners he encounters are stressed out, nervous, terrified at times, and feel out of control. Each episode, Millan packs in practical tips and valuable insights to help loyal fans and new viewers alike.
Often, the cases this season warrant Millan taking both dogs and owners to his Dog Psychology Center, a 45-acre facility in the hills outside Los Angeles, where he can utilize his pack of balanced dogs to socialize with the problem dogs and exercise the dogs using a special pool and long pack walks. Millan interacts very closely with the owners, teaching them how to handle and correct their dogs’ problem behaviors. When needed, he also works with the dogs and owners in his home training annex, where he can help them overcome issues that occur in common living areas like the bedroom, kitchen, and living room.
After a period of rehabilitation, Millan gives the owners homework assignments — challenges to master their leadership over their dog. At the end of each episode of Cesar 911, the owners rejoin Millan to review surveillance footage of how they handled their dog in the homework assignments. Millan tells the owners what they did correctly and what they can continue to improve. He then offers some final words of encouragement and thoughts about his experience working on their case. The families are now equipped with the knowledge and tools that only Cesar Millan can provide!
