Lionsgate Picks Up Dear White People

Writer/director Justin Simien’s Dear White People has found a home with Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions. The studios have picked up the Canadian and US distribution rights to the comedy starring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, and Brandon P Bell.
 
Dear White People, which won the Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at the Sundance Film Festival, was produced by Simien, Angel Lopez, An Le, Lena Waithe, Effie T. Brown and Julia Lebedev, and executive produced by Stephanie Allain and Leonid Lebedev.
 
“Justin Simien is a funny, fresh and current voice with his finger on the Millennials’ pulse,” said Roadside Attraction’s Howard Cohen. “His crowd-pleasing Dear White People took Sundance by storm, with its sly and extremely topical satire sparking conversations about our supposed ‘post-racial’, 21st century America.”
 
“This film was truly a labor of love with everyone on our team giving 110%. We have so few films made by people of color and I couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of bringing Justin’s fresh voice to fruition. And now to partner with Lionsgate and Roadside is an exciting next chapter in what I’m sure will be an amazing life for Dear White People,” said producer Effie Brown.
 
The Plot:


Dear White People follows the stories of four black students at Winchester University, where a riot breaks out over a popular ‘African American’ themed party thrown by a white fraternity. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film explores racial identity in ‘post-racial’ America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world.

The CW’s riveting Reign continues its season one run with the new episode “The Darkness” debuting on March 20, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT.

The Plot:

BASH WITNESSES THE DARKNESS OF THE WOODS — The castle is abuzz with First Light, where the women of the castle mingle with potential suitors. Much to Mary’s (Adelaide Kane) dismay, Lola (Anna Popplewell) is reluctant to participate in the tradition. After another violent incident with the increasingly erratic King Henry (Alan Van Sprang), Kenna (Caitlin Stasey) fears for her safety and confides in Queen Catherine (Megan Follows), while Bash (Torrance Coombs) experiences the terrors of the woods and vows to uncover the truth behind the Darkness. Toby Regbo and Celina Sinden also star.

The episode was directed by Steve DiMarco and written by Charlie Craig.

‘SNL’ Announces Upcoming Hosts and Musical Guests

Louis C.K. will be returning as host of Saturday Night Live for the second time when he takes on the gig on March 29, 2014. Joining Louis C.K. will be musical guest Sam Smith, who’s set to make his debut on the late-night series.

Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) will also be gracing the SNL stage for the first time when she hosts the show on April 5th. And Pharrell, the man who’s been making everyone “Happy,” will be the musical guest that night, marking his first time as a solo performer on SNL.

And last but not least, NBC says Seth Rogen will be back on April 12, 2014 in support of his new film, Neighbors, co-starring Zac Efron and Rose Byrne. Rogen’s hosted the show twice before, however, the April 12th musical guest is a rookie. Ed Sheeran will be putting in his first appearance as musical guest and he’ll be performing a single off his second album coming out this summer.

Andy Samberg, Chris Evans Join the List of Kids’ Choice Awards Presenters

Nickelodeon’s snagged some newbies to present at this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards taking place on March 29th and airing live at 8pm ET. Among the celebs who’ll be making their Kids’ Choice Awards debuts are Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, Michael Strahan, Jim Parsons, Kristen Bell, Debby Ryan, Chris Evans, and WWE Divas Brie and Nikki Bella.

Mark Wahlberg’s tackling the hosting duties and Aloe Blacc and American Authors are set to perform during the kid-friendly slimefest.

Also confirmed to take the stage this year are Lea Michele, WWE Superstar John Cena, Tia Mowry-Hardrict, Ross Lynch, and Kaley Cuoco.

‘Earth to Echo’s Trailer Features a Weird-Looking Alien

Earth to Echo‘s trailer makes the sci-fi film seem like a combination of The Goonies, ET, and Super 8. There’s a group of kids on one last adventure before their neighborhood’s destroyed (Goonies), the discovery of an apparently friendly alien who just wants to go home (ET), and the need to keep their discovery secret because adults wouldn’t believe them anyway/would lock up the alien (Goonies, ET, and Super 8).

Coming to theaters on July 2, 2014, Relativity Media’s Earth to Echo was directed by Dave Green and stars Teo Halm, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Reese Hartwig, and Ella Linnea Wahlestedt.

The Plot:

Tuck, Munch and Alex are a closely bonded trio of inseparable friends, but their time together is coming to an end. Their neighborhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that is forcing their families to move away. But just two days before they must part ways, the boys find a cryptic signal has infected their phones.

Convinced something bigger is going on and looking for one final adventure together, they set off to trace the messages to their source and discover something beyond their wildest imaginations: hiding in the darkness is a mysterious being, stranded on Earth, and wanted by the government. This launches the boys on an epic journey full of danger and wonder, one that will test the limits of their friendship and change all of their lives forever.

Amy Purdy Wows the Judges on Dancing with the Stars

Paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy showed off her dancing skills along with partner Derek Hough, kicking off the 2014 season of Dancing with the Stars with a Cha Cha Cha that had the audience on their feet and earned a 24/30 score from the judges. By dancing the Cha Cha Cha on the series premiere, Purdy became the first double-amputee to compete on the dance series.
 
Purdy, now 34, began snowboarding when she was 15 but the sport changed for her when at the age of 19 she was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. After having both of her legs amputated right below the knees, Purdy continued with the sport she loves and competed at the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi in Para-Snowboard. She’s following up that athletic competition with a run on Dancing with the Stars, pairing up with Hough to try and earn her way into the season finale.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Trailer #3

Andrew Garfield’s back as the webslinging hero in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 coming to theaters on May 2, 2014, and Sony’s revealed a new look at the action in this new Spider-Man tale. The trailer offers up a better look at Electro and Rhino as well as the evil-doings at Oscorp. In addition to Garfield, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cast includes Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Paul Giamatti.

The Plot:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.

Netflix’s ‘Grace and Frankie’ Marks a ‘Nine to Five’ Reunion

Netflix is hosting a Nine to Five reunion of sorts with the new comedy series Grace and Frankie. Nine to Five‘ers Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin headline the new original series from Marta Kauffman (Friends) and Howard J Morris (Sullivan & Son).

According to Netflix, Grace and Frankie‘s first season will consist of 13 half-hour episodes. Netflix is eyeing a 2015 debut of the series executive produced by Tomlin, Fonda, Marta Kaufman, Howard J. Morris, Paula Weinstein, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross.

“Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix,” stated Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait.”

“Netflix is redefining the way we produce and consume television and it’s a true privilege to be in business with Ted and his amazing team,” added David Ellison of Skydance. “Working with the wonderfully talented Marta, Jane, Lily, Howard and their producer Paula Weinstein is a dream come true, and the story they have crafted is both hilarious and heartfelt.”

The Plot: The single-camera comedy focuses on nemeses Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) facing the last chapter of their lives, though not in the way they expected. When their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married, the women find their lives both turned upside down and to their dismay, permanently intertwined. Eventually, to their surprise, they find they have each other.




First Look: ‘The Giver’ Trailer Starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep

Lois Lowry’s bestselling, award-winning novel The Giver comes to the big screen with Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Jeff Bridges, Alexander Skarsgard, and Odeya Rush in starring roles. The Weinstein Company’s set an August 15, 2014 release date and has just unveiled this official trailer setting up the story and the key players.

The Plot: “The haunting story of The Giver centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.”
