The series was created by novelist Nic Pizzolatto, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (Jane Eyre), with McConaughey, Harrelson, Steve Golin, and Scott Stephens executive producing. True Detective also features Kevin Dunn, Tory Kittles, Michael Potts, Elizabeth Reaser, Shea Whigham, Clarke Peters, Jay O. Sanders, and Lili Simmons.

And with the debut date just a couple of weeks away, HBO’s released plot details as well as info on the January episodes.

The Plot:

1995: Detectives Martin Hart and Rust Cohle, partners in Louisiana’s Criminal Investigation Division, are assigned to a macabre murder by a killer with disturbing occult leanings. As they attempt to uncover the secrets of this bizarre crime, their own lives collide and intertwine in unexpected, sometimes catastrophic ways.

2012: When a similar case leads to an investigation of the original ’95 murder by two new detectives, Martin and Rust separately tell the story of both the investigation and their lives, including why Cohle left CID in 2002.

Brought in for interrogation, a sex offender matching the description is quickly dismissed by Cohle, despite offering a confession. Hart gets sidetracked after Maggie sets Cohle up with a friend at a C&W bar. Looking to establish a pattern of murder, Cohle pores over old case files, finding a connection with a woman assumed to have drowned years earlier.

Captain Phillips Review

Oscar winner Tom Hanks has been chosen as the winner of the Chairman’s Award by the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Hanks earned the honor because of his outstanding performances in the dramatic thriller Captain Phillips and for playing Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks. Hanks is the latest in a line of A-listers who’ve earned the Chairman’s Award including Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.

Sandra Bullock, Bruce Dern, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen, Thomas Newman, Lupita Nyong’o, Julia Roberts and the cast of American Hustle will also receive awards at the Awards Gala on January 4, 2014 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

“Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors of his generation,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In a remarkable feat that vividly illustrates the range of his talent, this year he portrayed two real life characters, each a powerhouse performance in its own right. In the film Captain Phillips, he plays Richard Phillips, the captain of a ship hijacked by pirates, while in Saving Mr. Banks he plays Walt Disney trying to turn the book Mary Poppins into a film – two roles that couldn’t be more divergent. To this star of many talents the Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to honor Tom Hanks and present him with the Chairman’s Award.”

The Festival runs January 3-13, 2014.

Classic Movie Star Joan Fontaine Passes Away at 96

Joan Fontaine Passes AwayJoan Fontaine, the only actor to have ever won an Oscar for a starring role in a Hitchcock film, passed away from natural causes on December 15, 2013 at the age of 96. Over her six decade acting career Fontaine earned four Oscars nominations, winning for Hitchcock’s Suspicion, and she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

Fontaine was born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland on October 22, 1917 in Japan. She changed her name to Fontaine to avoid being confused with her older sister, Gone with the Wind actress Olivia de Havilland. The sisters had a turbulent relationship for most of their lives, publicly admitting they could not stand one another and going decades without speaking or being seen together. Fontaine was married four times and had one daughter (Deborah) with her second husband, William Dozier.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Joan Fontaine at this difficult time.

Movie Review: ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Review
Martin Freeman as Bilbo in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ (Photo © 2013 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc)

“Come now, don’t be shy. Step into the light,” says Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch), the powerful and terrifying dragon who’s been slumbering under piles of gold in the dwarves old kingdom to Bilbo (Martin Freeman) who accidentally awoke the beast while he was searching for a special stone in the second installment of the movie trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The dwarves, led by their rightful King, Thorin (Richard Armitage), continue their quest to reclaim their home Erebor along with their friend and burglar Bilbo while Gandalf (Ian McKellen), the great grey wizard, travels off to confront the ‘Necromancer’ – a powerful evil entity who is responsible it seems for all the dark forces coming to life in Middle Earth. The small band of travelers get sidetracked, however, when they become prisoners of the elves who at this point dislike all dwarves and see them as only bringing disaster to all of Middle Earth by disturbing the sleeping dragon. It falls to Bilbo, once again using his magical ring that gives him the gift of invisibility while wearing it, to free his comrades and escape the dungeon of the elves. This leads to a spectacular battle between the orcs, the elves, and the fleeing dwarves.

Finally reaching the Lonely Mountain where Smaug hibernates, it’s time for Bilbo to enter the lair of the dragon and do his best not to disturb the beast while searching for a magical stone.

Unlike the first installment of the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is an action-packed thrilling adventure that begins with – and almost never stops – being suspenseful. It has excellent special effects and a solid cast. Martin Freeman is perfect as Bilbo the reluctant little hobbit who keeps saving his friends time and time again as well as salvaging the quest when all is considered lost. He brings just the right balance of humor, determination, and fear to the role and makes the character even more likable than he was in the novel. Ian McKellen has made the role of Gandalf his own so much it’s now impossible to imagine anyone else playing the part. It is a disappointment though that his character, the most dynamic and interesting of all in the film, disappears for at least half of the picture on his side errand. The loss of his presence on screen is a huge void which is impossible for the audience not to feel.

The best performance in the film has to go to the actor who is only heard and never seen: Benedict Cumberbatch, the voice of the fire-breathing dragon Smaug. Cumberbatch’s menacing and droll delivery of Smaug’s lines to Bilbo once he realizes there is an intruder in his lair is truly eerie and frightening.

The fantastic CGI special effects are wonderful in bringing Middle Earth back to the big screen, but it’s greatest accomplishment is creating the best-looking and sounding dragon to ever appear on screen. The look, movement, and action of Smaug is the most superb triumph of the film.

With grade-A special effects, thrilling battle scenes, and a terrifying, self-absorbed flying dragon, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a breathtaking cinematic adventure not to be missed up on the big screen.

GRADE: B

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images.
