The End’s in Sight for ‘Californication’

Californication Comes to an End

Fans of Showtime’s Californication will have just one more season to enjoy the sexual hijinx of Hank. Showtime’s confirmed that season seven will be the last for the show starring David Duchovny, Natascha McElhone, Madeleine Martin, Evan Handler, and Pamela Adlon. Duchovny also serves as an executive producer on the series along with series creator Tom Kapinos.

Season seven will premiere in April 2014, however, the exact date hasn’t been announced.

“With its unique blend of lyricism and excess, Californication has been one of our groundbreaking signature series,” said David Nevins. “We will always be indebted to Tom Kapinos for leading the creative charge on this memorable comedy, and to David Duchovny for making us root for an unapologetic hedonist like Hank Moody. Tom has carefully planned the final chapter of Hank’s journey and has brought it to a beautiful and satisfying conclusion for new and long-time fans alike.”

Over the previous six seasons, Californication has earned five Emmy nominations, six Golden Globe nominations, and a Screen Actors Guild nomination. Season six averaged 2.9 million viewers.

The Plot:

From his debut in August 2007, Hank Moody quickly became everyone’s favorite unflinchingly honest, self-destructive lothario who bowed at the altar of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. The final season will find him joining the writer’s room as his never-released film “Santa Monica Cop” now becomes a television series of the same name. He’s riled frequently by his boss, the show’s old-school executive producer Rick Rath (guest star Michael Imperioli), and his fellow writing team members, including Goldie (guest star Mary Lynn Rajskub) and Alonzo (co-star Alonzo Bodden).

But he’s thrown by the reemergence of old friend Julia (guest star Heather Graham), whose arrival causes chaos in Hank’s already hectic life, and with his on-off relationship with Karen (McElhone). Meanwhile, Charlie (Handler) and Marcy (Adlon) grapple with the aftermath of their reunion and an enticing offer from her ex-husband, Stu Beggs (guest star Stephen Tobolowsky). Rob Lowe, Brandon T. Jackson, Oliver Cooper and Mercedes Masohn will also guest star.

MTV Announces Their Top 10 Movies of 2013 List

MTV’s annual Movie Awards usually have nothing in common with the choices made by critics, entertainment publications, or guilds. In fact, their movie awards show earned the nickname of the Twilight Awards because whenever a sparkling vampire movie was released, MTV showered it with nominations.

However, they take their year-end Best Of lists a bit more seriously. But that doesn’t mean the MTV list is going to match any other Top 10 list from a major network, publication, or group of critics. Not many lists include World War Z and Iron Man 3 as two of the top 10 movies of the year.

1. Gravity
2. This Is the End
3. Wolf of Wall Street
4. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
5. Iron Man 3
6. 12 Years a Slave
7. American Hustle
8. Spring Breakers
9. World War Z
10. The World’s End

MTV also announced Miley Cyrus is MTV’s Best Artist of 2013 and Pope Francis and Lorde are 2013’s Man and Woman of the Year.

CBS Greenlights The Dovekeepers Miniseries

Alice Hoffman's The Dovekeepers MiniseriesAlice Hoffman’s historical novel The Dovekeepers is being adapted into a four-hour miniseries set to air on CBS in 2015. Roma Downey and Mark Burnett (The Voice, Survivor) are on board as executive producers, and Hoffman will be involved in the production of the miniseries as a consultant.

Commenting on the CBS miniseries, Hoffman said, “I am thrilled that my novel The Dovekeepers, produced by Roma Downey, who I so admire for her vision and strong commitment to the stories of women of the ancient world, will be at CBS with Nina Tassler, who is dedicated to storytelling at the highest level.”

The Dovekeepers is a compelling, beautifully written novel that combines history and fiction into a timeless story of survival and heroism,” stated Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. “We’re thrilled to be working with Roma Downey and Mark Burnett to bring Alice Hoffman’s epic saga to life. Mark and Roma possess an amazing passion for telling biblical stories and for producing entertaining television on an event scale.”

“We are excited to get to turn this bestselling novel by Alice Hoffman into an epic miniseries that will be a major television event on CBS,” added Downey. “This novel is a testament to the human spirit and how love can rise from the ashes of war. It is, quite simply, an amazing story of heroism and hope, and a story that must be seen not just with the eyes but felt with the heart.”

The Plot:

Set in ancient Israel, The Dovekeepers is based on the true events at Masada in 70 C.E. After being forced out of their home in Jerusalem by the Romans, 900 Jews were ensconced in a fortress at Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. Besieged at Masada, the Jews held out for months against the vast Roman armies. The miniseries will recount the unfolding events from the perspective of four extraordinary women who arrive at Masada independently and with unique backstories, but who share a common bond for survival.

“As we move into the event movie and miniseries space, Rosemary’s Baby represents the kind of attention-getting, surprising project that will make noise for us,” added Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “The story has been updated and moved to Paris, but it’s faithful to the spirit of Ira Levin’s classic novel. This is a compelling tale wonderfully told.”

New Artist Spotlight: Brandy Clark

Brandy Clark Profile
Brandy Clark (Photo Credit: Sarah Pearson)

Brandy Clark came to Nashville from Morton, Wash., where she watched her grandmother smoke on the front porch as Mount St. Helens erupted a short ways away, and later worked in a fencing mill. Her love for Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard and Loretta Lynn, coupled with her perceptive observations of everyday characters, fueled her ascension as a songwriter. Two No. 1 hits — The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two” and Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart” — are Clark co-writes, along with Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow” and “It Is What It Is” and songs picked up by Sheryl Crow, Kellie Pickler, Reba, Darius Rucker and Kenny Rogers.

What’s surprising is why she waited until now to step forward as a performer. Throughout 12 Stories, produced by Dave Brainard and released by Slate Creek Records, Clark gets deep inside each lyric with an understated but tuneful delivery; sometimes ironic, sometimes laconic, she lets the tales speak vividly for themselves.

Her first single, “Stripes” (written by Clark, Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally), recounts the protagonist’s decision not to blow away her dimwit boyfriend because “I don’t look good in orange and I hate stripes,” told to the twang and gallop of a spaghetti Western soundtrack.

Every other track is a gem too. It’s not necessary to single any of them out; taken individually and as a whole, they confirm that as long as Brandy Clark is around, poetic narrative in the finest tradition of Country songwriting will endure.

IN HER OWN WORDS

WHAT YOU’D BE IF NOT A MUSICAL ARTIST

“An esthetician.”

GREATEST PERFORMANCE TO DATE

“Opening a show in Carmel, Ind., for Sheryl Crow – perfect venue and perfect audience.”

FAVORITE FOOD ON THE ROAD

“Room service.”

SOMETHING WE’D NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU
