New Artist Spotlight: Florida Georgia Line

Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line

You don’t need to know that Tyler Hubbard comes from Monroe, Ga., or that his partner in Florida Georgia Line, Brian Kelley, comes from Ormond Beach, Fla. It’s the music that lets you know these two guys know how to kick it in the studio and onstage, Dixie style.

Their debut album, Here’s to the Good Times, is a pastiche of prickling banjo, walloping backbeats and muscle guitar, run through a blender of Country, Southern rock and a hint of hip-hop.

Hubbard and Kelley coast over these grooves with upbeat vocals that pound their good-time message home. Every measure of their first single, “Cruise,” suggests head-bobbing and arm-waving. Written by Hubbard, Kelley, their producer Joey Moi, Chase Rice and Jesse Rice, it opens with a harmonized vocal figure, which pops with the first of several lyric hooks that made this one of the catchiest summer anthems of the year. (The “Chevy with a lift-kit” lick midway through the chorus is a lethally infectious secondary sing-along line.)

This first single from Here’s to the Good Times pretty much defines Florida Georgia Line’s party-hard feel. Even their song titles beckon listeners to join in on the fun: “Get Your Shine On” (Rodney Clawson, Kelley, Hubbard and Chris Tompkins) builds through a melodic fragment that rises, step by step, into another ear-worm chorus, this one at a steady medium tempo. “Tip It Back” (Clawson, Hubbard and Kelley) applies those three words to ball caps, long-necks and the seats in “your girlfriend’s Cadillac.”

With their smiling, deep-drawl delivery and relentlessly upbeat outlook, who could resist invitations like these?

DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo – the tale of a snail with dreams of racing – is going to be coming to the small screen as an animated series on Netflix. The series will be the first show on Netflix made just for kids. The new series, Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), will premiere this December.

“Families love Netflix, so creating an original series for kids was a natural for us. And we’re doing it in a big way by adapting Turbo, this year’s DreamWorks Animation summer tentpole movie,” stated Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix. “DreamWorks Animation has a long track record of creating incredibly successful characters and stories that delight people of all ages. We’re thrilled to add Turbo the series as well as all new DreamWorks Animation films, starting with their 2013 slate, to Netflix.”

DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzman, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Lion and Samuel L. Jackson. The animated family-friendly, snail-friendly comedy hits theaters on July 19, 2013.

The Plot:

DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo is a high velocity 3D comedy about an ordinary snail who dares to dream big – and fast. After a freak accident miraculously gives him the power of super-speed, Turbo kicks his dreaming into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the seemingly impossible: competing in the Indianapolis 500.

Turbo’s pursuit of racing greatness continues in Turbo: F.A.S.T., an episodic animated television series that picks up where the feature film leaves off. It showcases the world-traveling exploits of our snail hero and his tricked-out racing crew as they master outrageous new stunts and challenge any villain unlucky enough to cross their path.

Video: Jimmy Kimmel Interviews Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker

If Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker doesn’t ring a bell, then you haven’t been keeping up on the news. Drifter/surfer Kai became a hero when he saved innocent bystanders by taking down a crazy dude who was raving about being Jesus, whipping a hatchet out of his backpack and, in his own words, “smash, smash, s-mash”-ing the attacker with it.

The interview conducted by KMPH News shortly after the event became a massive hit on Youtube, not only due to Kai’s heroic actions but also because he seems like a decent guy with a positive outlook on life.

Since the interview hit the internet, Kai’s gained a huge fan following that apparently includes Jimmy Kimmel. Stopping by Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kai sort of talked about his life now that he’s recognized on the street and why he was carrying a hatchet in the first place.

And here’s the original interview with KMPH:

BBC Announces the End of ‘Being Human’

BBC's Being Human Canceled

The BBC supernatural drama Being Human will be coming to an end with this fifth and final season. And according to BBC Three, this last season will find our supernatural heroes facing off against the Devil.

As with the American version, the British Being Human has a passionate fan base, with the series averaging 1.2 million viewers. The show earned the Best TV Drama Series award from the Writer’s Guild in 2009, 2010, and 2012. It was also named the Best Drama Series at the 2011 TV Choice Awards.

“Working on Being Human has been a truly great experience. From the first one-hour pilot all the way through to this climactic series, we’ve been given real creative freedom and encouragement. It’s a credit to BBC Three that such an unusual idea has been allowed to flourish and evolve in its own unique way,” stated executive producer Rob Pursey.

“I’d like to take the chance to thank Toby Whithouse (creator and writer) for his incredible writing and storytelling; the other screenwriters who’ve made the series their own; the three producers who’ve nurtured the show; and the many directors who’ve helped us establish the show’s unique tone. Being Human has also opened the door to new acting talent, including some incredibly exciting younger actors, which is a legacy we all feel proud of. We will miss Being Human, but feel inspired that there is a place for series like this on British television.”

Zai Bennett, Controller, BBC Three, added: “Being Human has been a fantastic and faithful friend to BBC Three. It’s featured some truly exceptional actors and storylines through the years and I’d like to thank Toby and the production team for their vision and passion. However, all good things come to an end and at BBC Three we’re committed to breaking new shows and new talent and who better to pass that baton on than Toby.”

Details on Season 5: Series five sees our supernatural trio facing their own personal demons, and matters become more complicated with the return of Mr Rook, the shady figure whose government department protects the human world from otherworldly beings.

But Vampire Hal (Damien Molony), Werewolf Tom (Michael Socha), and Ghost Alex (Kate Bracken) don’t realise they face a bigger threat than the Men in Grey, when they stumble across the decrepit and repulsive Captain Hatch (Phil Davis).

Unknown to our trio, Hatch’s feeble exterior hides an ancient evil… because Captain Hatch is the Devil himself and has been trapped in human form for centuries!

Now the father of all evil is just itching to inflict chaos on mankind, but can our heroes survive the oncoming Armageddon unscathed?

‘The Host’ Behind the Scenes Video – Jake Abel as ‘Ian’

We’re done with movies based on Stephenie Meyer’s sparkling vampires, but that doesn’t mean Hollywood’s finished with adapting Meyer’s books for the screen. Heading to theaters on March 29, 2013 is The Host, based on Meyer’s novel about aliens on Earth. Andrew Niccol (In Time, Lord of War) handled adapting and directing the feature film version which stars Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, Max Irons, and Diane Kruger. And in this behind-the-scenes video, Abel discusses his character and the story.

The Plot:

The Host is a love story set in the future, where earth is occupied by a species who erase the minds of their human hosts, leaving their bodies intact. Melanie Stryder (Ronan) is one of the last surviving humans who fights back, risking her life for the people she cares about most—Jared (Irons), Ian (Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury), and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt)—proving that love can conquer all.
