DVD Review: ‘Best of Warner Bros – 20 Film Collection: Best Pictures’

Best of Warner Bros 20 Film Collection Best Picture REview

2013 is not only Warner Bros Pictures’ 90th anniversary as a studio, but also could be considered the Year of WB DVD Collections. The studio is putting their best films out in new collections, each geared to cover a specific genre or topic.

In stores on January 29th – timed to coincide with the awards season – is the 20 Film Collection: Best Pictures DVD set. The 20 film set is divided up into three subsets based on the year of release, with the third set titled The New Classics and featuring the studio’s most recent Best Picture winners: Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby, and Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

It’s fascinating to look back over not only the studio’s history but the history of film with these 20 Best Picture winners. The bonus features on each disc are bare-bones. However, the movies themselves are what cinephiles would be picking up this collection to view.

Most individual films in the set come with a commentary track, but there are a few that provide more than the basic extra material. Grand Hotel offers a documentary as well as theater announcements; Around the World in 80 Days has a commentary, outtakes, and newsreels; An American in Paris includes rare interviews and commentary; and Driving Miss Daisy has a commentary and three featurettes.

The Best Pictures collection also includes a 20-page booklet with one-paragraph descriptions and trivia on each of the Oscar-winning films.

ABC’s Debuting Motive This Summer

Motive is apparently not your typical crime drama. ABC’s just picked up the series for a 13-episode summer 2013 run and in doing so they describe the show as “focusing not on who did the crime, but why the crime was committed in the first place.”

The cast of the dramatic series includes Kristin Lehman, Louis Ferreira, Lauren Holly, Roger Cross, Brendan Penny, and Cameron Bright. The series was created by Daniel Cerone (Dexter) and executive produced by Cerone, Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob LaBelle, Lindsay Macadam, and James Thorpe.

The Official Plot Details:

When murder is committed, Angie Flynn, a loving, single mother and a damned good detective, along with her partner, Detective Oscar Vega, are on the case, looking for clues that will lead them to the killer. But Motive turns the tried-and-true crime drama formula on its head by indentifying the killer and victim at the beginning of each episode. These storylines are then further explored via stylized flashbacks which piece together more of the mysterious connection between the two characters and what drove the killer to commit murder.

Pouch Joins the Cast of ‘Chicago Fire’

NBC’s Chicago Fire has added a new, pretty cast member. As if we needed another reason to tune in, the firefighters of Firehouse 51 have adopted a rescue puppy to be their station’s mascot. Tonight’s episode will introduce the new four-legged cast member, Pouch, who will be a regular on the show.

Chicago Fire executive producer and co-creator Derek Haas says Pouch – the character’s name as well as the dog’s real name – came by that name as a combination of half pooch/half couch. And Haas says that, contrary to popular belief, none of the actual Chicago firehouses they’ve visited has a spotted Dalmatian.

“We saw a dog like our Pouch while doing a ride-along with the Chicago Fire Department last summer,” said Haas. “A kid offered his dog to the firemen and said it was either going there, or it would have to go to the pound for adoption.”

“All firehouses have a million stories to tell about a firehouse dog, and we thought he would make a great addition. Pouch will literally grow up before our eyes. Plus, pets are great stress relievers, and firefighters and rescue squads are under tremendous pressure every day, so they will appreciate her presence as a working dog,” explained Haas.

Details on the January 30, 2013 Episode:

Firefighter Peter Mills (Charlie Barnett) discovers a wayward mutt and wants to keep him in the firehouse but is overruled by no-nonsense Battalion Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) and Mouch (Christian Stolte). Over time, the irresistible Pouch eventually is named and claimed by the entire fire-and-rescue team.

Christoph Waltz Will Host SNL

Set your DVRs for February 16, 2013 at 11:30pm. NBC’s just announced Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) will be making his Saturday Night Live hosting debut on that episode. Waltz, who recently picked up a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Django Unchained, has a devilish but dry sense of humor so it’ll be interesting to see how that translates for the SNL format.

Waltz will be joined on the Feb. 16th episode by musical guest Alabama Shakes. The rockers will also be making their first appearance on the show on that night.

And for those who still have Bieber Fever, Justin Bieber will be both the host and musical guest on the February 9th SNL episode.

‘Bet On Your Baby’ Game Show Coming to ABC

Parents will be able to win money for their child’s college education if they can correctly predict what their baby is going to do next on the new game show Bet On Your Baby from ABC. The primetime game show has just been greenlit by the network and could be airing as early as April.

Comedienne Melissa Peterman (Baby Daddy) will be hosting the series. For now, ABC has ordered just eight episodes of the show.

In ABC’s official announcement, Peterman was quoted as saying: “I’m very excited to be hosting Bet On Your Baby. The concept of the show just appealed to me on many levels because, as a mom, I liked the fact that the kids are having fun and being themselves; it’s the parents playing the game. As someone who likes funny, there is no one more naturally hilarious and fun to watch than a toddler. I am thrilled to be working now with both ABC and ABC Family, and I look forward to a long relationship with Electus and 5×5 Media.”

The Details: Every parent thinks they know their baby well, but are they willing to bet on it? Bet On Your Baby will reveal the answer to that question each week in an hour-long program featuring five families with toddlers between the ages of two and three and a half years old. Each family will play a self-contained, individual challenge against the house — meaning they’re only competing against themselves, and not against other babies. At the end of the show, the five families return to play the college round for the chance to win $50,000 toward a college education for their child.

The film follows a group of kids who while playing capture the flag take their game too far, pushing “beyond the game and the boundaries of friendship into an adventure where fantasy blurs with reality.”

“Not since Stand By Me have we experienced such a poignant and sincere film about kids for adults,” said Drafthouse Films CEO/Founder Tim League, “Armed with an arsenal of extremely talented child actors and combining shades of Full Metal Jacket and Lord Of The Flies, Jason and Rob have created a one-of-a-kind action film that we couldn’t be more excited to handle in the US.”

CBS says there will definitely be a ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother. The hit comedy series will return in 2013-2014 and the identity of the Mother will finally be revealed.

Series regulars Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, and Alyson Hannigan are all onboard for the final season.

Announcing the renewal of the series for season nine, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler stated: “Through eight years, How I Met Your Mother has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catchphrases. We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”

Created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, How I Met Your Mother has thus far earned 24 Emmy nominations (winning six) and two Golden Globe nominations. The series has been one of CBS’ highest ratings-grabbers, averaging 9.75 million viewers over its eighth season.

“We‘re thrilled to have the entire and incredibly talented How I Met Your Mother cast back for one final season to bring the series to a proper close,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen of 20th Century Fox Television. “Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are masterful and hilarious storytellers, and we have no doubt that they will guide one of the greatest comedies of the last decade to a gratifying conclusion when they finally reveal the identity of the Mother.”

Kate Upton Washes a Car in Slow Motion…

Yes, Mercedes Benz is using sex – in the form of supermodel Kate Upton – to sell their Mercedes Benz-CLA during the 2013 Super Bowl. The new commercial finds Kate in a black tank top and jeans shorts blowing soap bubbles off her hand and supervising a bunch of guys washing the car. Is it an effective video? You be the judge. Frankly, it did nothing for me – but I’m not the targeted demographic.

Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper Share a Poster

The Place Beyond the Pines Poster with Ryan and Bradley

Did that headline get your attention? Yes? Two of Hollywood’s hottest actors share not only a poster but co-starring roles in Focus Features’ The Place Beyond the Pines. Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine), The Place Beyond the Pines also features Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne, Mahershala Ali, Dane DeHaan, Emory Cohen, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Focus is planning a March 29, 2013 theatrical release of the dramatic film which premiered at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival.

The Plot:

Luke (Ryan Gosling) is in constant motion, a high-wire motorcycle stunt performer who travels from town to town with the carnival. Passing through Schenectady in upstate New York, he tries to reconnect with a former lover, Romina (Eva Mendes), only to learn that she has, in his absence, given birth to their son Jason.

Luke resolves to forsake life on the road and to provide for his newfound family, taking a job as car mechanic with Robin (Ben Mendelsohn). Robin soon discovers Luke’s special talents, and proposes to partner with him in a string of spectacular bank robberies. But it is only a matter of time before Luke will run up against the law – which comes in the form of Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper).

Avery is an ambitious rookie cop navigating a local police department ruled by the menacingly corrupt detective Deluca (Ray Liotta). When Avery, just beginning to balance his profession and his family life with wife Jennifer (Rose Byrne) and their infant son AJ, confronts Luke, the full consequences will reverberate into the next generation. It is then that the two sons, Jason (Dane DeHaan) and AJ (Emory Cohen), must face their fateful, shared legacy.
