Robert Pattinson

Well, E!’s Celeb of the Year has been named and the winner doesn’t exactly come as a big surprise. However, this could be his last year to reign as king of E!’s annual competition.

Five weeks ago, E! kicked off their celebrity popularity battle with 64 stars. And after all those weeks of voting, it came down to a head-to-head competition between two actors who play vampires: Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame and Ian Somerhalder from The CW’s The Vampire Diaries.

And the winner is…Taylor Lautner. Just kidding. Robert Pattinson won the tournament for the third year in a row.

You can now go about your life safe in the knowledge that E! and the legion of Pattinson fans have spoken and Rob continues to reign supreme.

Elijah Wood Gets Evil in ‘Maniac’ 6-Minute Video

Whoa…Elijah Wood as a killer? Who would have thought the fresh-faced actor best known for playing Frodo in three Lord of the Rings movies would turn up as a warped killer in the grizzly horror film Maniac? It’s definitely casting against type.

Maniac is a remake of the William Lustig thriller of the same name. This version is directed by Franck Khalfoun from a script by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur (the High Tension writing team).

Steven Pasquale and Alana De La Garza star in NBC’s new one-hour primetime drama Do No Harm. The new series is set to premiere on January 31, 2013.

Steven Pasquale plays Dr Jason Cole, Alana De La Garza stars as Dr Lena Solis, Michael Esper is Dr Kenneth Jordan, and Ruta Gedmintas is Olivia Flynn. Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Dr Ruben Marcado, Phylicia Rashad is Dr Vanessa Young, John Carroll Lynch is Will Hayes, and Samm Levine plays Josh Stern.

The Plot: Dr. Jason Cole (Pasquale, Rescue Me) is a highly respected neurosurgeon who has it all – a lucrative career, confident charm, the gift of compassion. But he also has a deep, dark secret. One morning when he wakes up disoriented in a wrecked hotel room amidst several near-naked women he’s never seen before, he knows one thing: it’s happening again. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic.

This new man is his dangerous alternate personality who goes by the name of ‘Ian Price.’ For years he’s battled Ian, keeping him in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now his – their – body has developed a resistance to the serum, setting Ian free once again. And to make matters worse, after being suppressed for so long, Ian is hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, coworkers, and even the woman he loves – he’s got to stop Ian once and for all. Will they find some common ground, or will they bring each other down? Hell hath no fury like an alter ego scorned.

Spotlight On: Supermassive Black Hole by 2CELLOS and Naya Rivera

Cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser of 2CELLOS have announced a new album and released a new music video – a “galactic-themed” version of Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” starring Naya Rivera (Glee). Their new album, IN2ITION, arrives in stores on January 15, 2013 and includes guests artists Elton John, Steve Vai, Lang Lang, Zucchero, and Sky Ferreira.

Produced by Bob Ezrin, IN2ITION was recorded in Zagreb, Rome, Nashville, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

Discussing their collaboration with Rivera, Stjepan said, “We love Naya’s sexy voice – it’s perfect for this song! We recreated Muse’s amazing guitar riff on the cello and by using different sound effects, we gave this traditionally classical instrument a more contemporary, rock sound.”

“We became friends with Naya last year on the set of Glee and this is a perfect follow-up to our appearance on the Michael Jackson tribute episode,” added Luka.

And it was Elton John himself who suggested 2CELLOS cover “Oh Well.” “Elton suggested that we cover ‘Oh Well’ because he thought it would be perfect for the cello. We said we’d do it if he sang on it and he agreed!” revealed Stjepan. “It’s a fairly unknown Fleetwood Mac song and Elton’s voice sounds amazing on the track.”

Movie Review: ‘Promised Land’

Matt Damon and John Krasinski in Promised Land

In the past few years, the issue of how we obtain natural gas has become a hot button issue. Companies do it by using Hydraulic Fracturing, commonly referred to as Fracking (which is not a swearword from Battlestar Galactica). The industry says it’s safe and environmentalists say we’re poisoning the water table and one needs only to spend a few seconds on YouTube to find a video where someone lights their running tap water on fire.

Such is the backdrop for director Gus Van Sant’s new film, Promised Land, based on a story by Dave Eggers with the screenplay duties being handled by Matt Damon and John Krasinski. Damon plays a hot shot at a natural gas company who’s got a track record of convincing small, rural towns to sell mining rights to their property; and doing his best not to have them asking questions the company doesn’t want to answer. He’s joined by another silver-tongued salesperson played by Frances McDormand and the pair thinks the town will be just like every other they worked.

Complications arise when a local teacher (Hal Holbrook) raises concerns and the arrival of John Krasinski portraying an environmental advocate further extends the town’s confusion and debate. There are also small romantic subplots between Damon and Rosemarie DeWitt, and McDormand and Titus Welliver – which for me is where the film loses its way but more on that in a second.

Van Sant and the script do a nice job of boiling down the issue of fracking; the reasons why some people sign off on the notion without doing their due diligence and why others raise their voices in alarm. It’s likely the natural gas industry will be doing what they can to rebuff claims made in the movie, but while it’s clear the slant skews one way, it’s not as completely villainous as one might expect.

All of the performances are decent, but problems arise via the budding romances (see, I got to my earlier comment). For most of the film, it’s fine and adds a bit of humanity to both Damon and McDormand’s characters but the final ten minutes of the movie completely undercut all of the work done to present a film about issues only to replace it with something screening audiences would sign off on. Looking back on it, the inclusion of these elements almost felt like Damon and Krasinski were following screenwriting rules rather than the story’s own path.

I also found issue with some of the score work done by Danny Elfman. His compositions are nice to listen to here, but I heard many of the same elements in the last film he, Damon, and Van Sant all worked together on: Good Will Hunting. Echoing that sentiment, some of the music feels like Van Sant wishing he had more Elliott Smith songs. They’re lovely to listen to as well, but it all felt a little like people trying to recapture the magic in the bottle from 15 years ago rather than focusing on an entirely new project.

The bottom line is that Van Sant and company almost had their hands on a really special film but let it slip away from them in its resolution. It’s hard to say whether the movie will gain any notoriety or just fall away from public consciousness, as I’m writing these words a month before Promised Land opens in limited release. However, even if you are interested in the film, it’s probably a better idea to wait for the home market and thereby minimize possible financial loss. Your 42″ HDTV will handle the imagery just fine, and at no point does Damon get amnesia and awaken a super spy.

Also, just a reminder that it’s always prudent to do research on both sides of any issue before making up your mind so anyone out there who thinks this movie review is anti-fracking propaganda can now shut it (anyone who thinks I shorted the quality of the film can leave a comment.) People interested purely in the topic of fracking can look at a documentary from 2010, Gasland – which is decidedly anti-fracking. If there were a completed pro-fracking doc out there, I’d recommend it but as far as I know there is not. A group is trying to make one called FrackNation but I have no idea how far along they are.

GRADE: C+

Promised Land hits theaters on December 28, 2012 and is rated R for language.

Will Britney Be Leaving The X Factor?

US Weekly’s reporting Simon Cowell’s ready to call an end to the Britney Spears experiment. According to the magazine, Cowell’s not exactly pleased with the current panel of X Factor judges and will not be asking Spears back for a second season. The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that L.A. Reid would not be returning for a third season.

According to US Weekly’s unnamed source inside the show, Cowell “wanted crazy Britney, but he got boring Britney.”

The revolving door could also be hitting Demi Lovato in the butt as it appears Cowell’s ready to bring in three new judges for season #3. Season 2 wasn’t exactly a ratings bonanza for Fox, and the combo of Spears (and her $15 million contract) and Lovato didn’t bring in the viewership the network was banking on.

And in case you forgot, Season 1’s judging panel consisted of Cowell, Reid, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.
