A Place at the Table, a documentary about the hunger crisis in the US, has been picked up for US distribution by Magnolia Pictures. Directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush and featuring Jeff Bridges, A Place at the Table premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival (then titled Finding North) and will hit theaters in the US in early 2013.

The film shines a spotlight on the hunger crisis, examining why 30% of all American families (49+ million people) don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Announcing the acquisition, Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles said, “Beyond being powerful, moving, and a real call to action for change, A Place at the Table is an incredibly well made, cinematic and entertaining film. It’s a great companion film to Food, Inc, and we’re very happy to be working with our friends at Participant again.”

T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars provide the film’s music.

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Honors ‘The Intouchables’

Christopher and Dana Reeve FoundationThe Intouchables has the distinction of being the first film honored by the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The non-profit organization was established to assist in the care of individuals living with paralysis and in helping to advance the research into spinal cord injuries, and Reeve Foundation President and CEO Peter T. Wilderotter explained why The Intouchables was chosen for special recognition.

“The Dana Reeve HOPE Award is presented to a person or organization that has shown amazing grace, strength, and fortitude. The recipient of this award is dedicated to continuing the hope that Dana Reeve brought to the world and to the millions of people living with paralysis. It is only fitting that we honor The Intouchables for touching audiences worldwide and reminding us of the commonalities shared between all of us, no matter the circumstances.”Wilderotter added, “We have always honored individuals and corporations that embody our mission to further the quality of life for those living with paralysis. After seeing this extraordinary film, we felt compelled to honor all of the individuals who helped bring this film and its inspirational story to light. This film captures the Foundation’s mission of ‘Today’s Care, Tomorrow’s Cure’ and we are passionate about sharing its empowering message with our community.”

Harvey Weinstein will be accepting the award on behalf of The Weinstein Company and The Intouchables directors Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache during a fundraising gala to be held on November 28, 2012 in New York City.

“On behalf of Eric and Olivier and TWC, I would like to express how humbled we are to be recognized by one of the most inspirational and forward thinking organizations of our time,” said Weinstein. “Christopher and Dana Reeve have bettered the lives of millions, and the fact that this film is the first ever to be honored by them shows us how the film’s true story touches the hearts of so many like it did ours.”

The Official The Intouchables Synopsis:

The Intouchables is an irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust, and human possibility that has warmed the hearts of millions. Based on a true story of friendship between a millionaire (François Cluzet) living with paralysis due to a spinal cord injury and his street smart ex-con caretaker (Omar Sy), The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common.

The Killing’ is Canceled After 2 Seasons

Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos in The Killing

I have to admit I’m one of those people who loved the first season of The Killing…right up until the final episode. After that, I felt the series had pulled a bait and switch, and I didn’t trust it enough to fulfill its promises to give the series a second try. Who killed Rosie Larsen? I no longer cared. And, apparently, I’m not the only person who felt that way.

AMC has announced they will not be bringing The Killing starring Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman back for a third season.

“After much deliberation, we’ve come to the difficult decision not to renew The Killing for a third season,” stated AMC. “AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from showrunner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast.”

Fox TV Studios added, “Fox Television Studios is extremely proud of The Killing, the extraordinary writing staff and crew, and what we believe is one of the best casts on television. We will proceed to try to find another home for the show.”

So, maybe it’s not completely dead yet…but I wouldn’t hold my breath until another network picks it up. Season two’s ratings never matched season one, and there’s no reason to believe a third season would generate more interest than the second was able to do.

Movie Review: ‘Step Up Revolution’

Step Up Revolution

While Hollywood continues to try and revive the musical, one franchise focused on the world of dance has been chugging along since 2006 with enough success to now spawn a third sequel: Step Up Revolution. And while I personally find the launching of Channing Tatum’s film career in Step Up a misdemeanor crime against cinema, I will admit to enjoying the franchise for its core element of dancing.

In this latest installment, a group of dancers in Miami going by the moniker “The Mob” are using flash mobs in an attempt to win a YouTube contest (at least both concepts are still in use as of 2012, I look forward to laughing at this concept down the road). Along the way, a wealthy hotel magnate (Peter Gallagher with trimmed eyebrows) threatens to demolish their neighborhood to build a high-end waterfront district. Oh, and to create “drama,” his daughter Emily (Kathryn McCormick) is an aspiring contemporary dancer trying to get into a prestigious academy (whose founder is played by real-life choreographer Mia Michaels).

Emily needs inspiration, and The Mob is just the thing! Hooray! But what will her Daddy think? Oh my!? It’s like Shakespeare meets Footloose … well, maybe Frank Shakespeare meets the 2011 remake of Footloose.

To no surprise, the acting is laughable; the script perhaps even more so. However, this may be some of the best dancing in the series. McCormick was the last woman standing on her season of So You Think You Can Dance and her ability outshines any of the female leads to this point (call me!).

In terms of group routines, a few of the dance battles in Step Up 3D could plead their case, but director Scott Speer did a better job here of allowing the routines to play out in slightly longer cuts (slightly).

The 3D is a mixed bag so purchase the right to use those tinted lenses at your own discretion. Thankfully, because the filmmakers made sure to use the neon colors Miami is so well known for in its art deco style, the dulling effect normally associated with the glasses is lessened. Some of the sets and group numbers are aided by a sense of immersion through nearly every motion thrown towards the camera fails miserably. As a friend pointed out after the movie, the aesthetic is very similar to watching CSI: Miami (though there’s a lot more dancing and a lot less David Caruso).

For people more well versed in the films that have come before, Adam G. Sevani, Mari Koda, and Chadd Smith make a cameo appearance during the finale and Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss is back, playing the same role he did in the previous movie. These little touches provide continuity for fans and although I only show up to see the dancing, maybe … just maybe … trying to bring back the key players from each film in an upcoming installment will create the first real sense of drama or gravitas in the franchise’s entire run.

If you’re trying to decide if my opinion jibes with your expectations, keep in mind that my DVR does include So You Think You Can Dance. Having that connection makes seeing former dancers and choreographers from the show get involved a welcome bonus, and the results are in the routines. Of course, there’s no excusing the formulaic and poorly executed plots. Anyone going to these films looking to take notes on screenwriting or acting has chosen poorly. It’s all about pretty people dancing, and anyone expecting more is just chasing disappointment. That being said, Step Up Revolution will satiate those aware of the limitations.

GRADE: C

Step Up Revolution hits theaters on July 27, 2012 and is rated PG-13 for some suggestive dancing and language.
