‘Chronicle’ Movie Review

As the calendar flips away from January, the hope is that the state of films can only go up, as we leave what is traditionally the biggest dumping month for films as studios aim their sights on pushing films for awards attention. Kicking February off is Harry Potter having problems with ghosts in The Woman in Black and Chronicle, a small science fiction picture that has a DIY look but does more with its $15 million dollar budget than so many tent pole films with ten times the cash. I’ll leave Radcliff’s attempt at shedding his Hogwarts image to others and concentrate on the latter project.

The story is simple but to the point. Three high school seniors (Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, and Michael B. Jordan) discover something out in the woods and are imbued with superhuman abilities. This isn’t Spider-Man or any of its ilk, however. The majority of the film sees the trio figuring out what they can do with their new abilities and dealing with their newfound power in different ways, based on their underlying personalities. Two of them handle things rather well, while the third has a lot of anger and pain buried not so deep that is sure to find its way out.

There is a small Heroes vibe, and the special effects are handled quite well, giving off shades of District 9, only without the giant alien prawns (though this too was filmed in South Africa). As a science fiction fan, I was happy to see a concept, though not so new, that was blended well with a pretty realistic portrayal of high school life. There are a few issues with kids looking beyond their characters’ ages (though only one side character is old enough to call Luke Perry-esque shenanigans on) but the raw emotions and difficulty in seeing the big picture capture what it’s like to feel young and invulnerable. And given their powers, these kids have more reason than most to feel like they can do almost anything.

That’s not to say the film isn’t without problems. First and foremost is the need to use a first-person perspective, hand-held (i.e. shaky) camera. Think Diary of the Dead, think The Blair Witch Project, think Cloverfield. Hmm, all horror movies. I’m not sure if I want to see this gimmick applied to a romantic comedy or not … but I digress.

The movie begins with Andrew (DeHaan) propping up a video camera and telling his alcoholic father he’s going to film everything. Andrew then has to explain to the next few characters we meet that it’s what he wants to do, and the audience is subjected to epileptic shots for the first ten or twenty minutes. Once the boys’ powers come into play, a conceit is given as for smoother camera work, although every frame of the film is shown directly via the perspective of looking through a camera lens rather than a diary of something that happened previously. The film simply shows us what’s occurring at the time, not via rewound footage.

This narrative device has its benefits in horror, putting the audience right into the fray. It even has merit in smaller independent films, creating a more intimate connection between the characters and those watching the movie. However, forcing it into every shot of this picture is more a sign of being obsessed with the gimmick than understanding how it can benefit the story. And when boiling the pros vs. cons down in this case, the only reason to use it is to make for more logical gaps in time, as we keep jumping forward to see a longer progression of the boys’ exploration of their powers without extending actual running time (83 minutes).

There’s also some issue with the manner in which everything is resolved. Most of the picture is a decently accurate portrayal of high school seniors being given powers they could only dream of. The final conflict is a bit more of a smash ‘n grab. It’s fun to watch the chaos all over what’s supposed to be downtown Seattle (the Space Needle is not immune to the destruction either), but the shift in tone seems more like the ending a five-year-old would invent with Lego than how the story builds up until that point.

With all that said, it’s with a grain of salt that I give Chronicle an extra bump in the grading department because of the project’s ambition and my appreciation of sci-fi getting a slightly new look on the big screen; without all the hoopla that would come attached to some huge budget, star-studded affair (how did Hancock turn out? Exactly.). Due to the slight dichotomy between the build-up and the finale, it’s possible that you’ll like one section and not the other, but be able to balance the effort in your mind favorably overall. Also, there’s an indie feel to the project that may or may not appeal to some viewers but if you’re a fan of science fiction, there’s enough here to warrant checking out the film and the effects are good enough to be seen on the big screen but they’ll also play out just fine on your 103″ OLED TV.

GRADE: B-

Chronicle hits theaters on February 3, 2012 and is rated PG-13 for intense action and violence, thematic material, some language, sexual content and teen drinking.

Suzuki’s Super Bowl Commercial Has Huskies and a 50 Cent Song

Suzuki Sled Commercial

Honestly, I don’t think Suzuki’s Super Bowl commercial is going to be voted the best of the group, but it does feature good-looking huskies so it has that going for it. The ad – titled “Sled” – also makes good use of 50 Cent’s new song “Movin’ On Up” as it promotes the automaker’s all-wheel-drive 2012 Suzuki Kizashi sport sedan.

The Story: “Suzuki’s ‘Sled’ television spot is set in an isolated mountain location. ‘Sled’ opens with an early morning scene where an Eskimo and his dog sled team ride off into the horizon. As the landscape changes from morning to evening, the quiet still of the frozen tundra gives way to vibrations and a hint of something new in the distance. A Kizashi – accompanied by 50 Cent’s ‘Movin’ On Up’ – comes driving into view with one of the Huskies’ heads sticking out of the front passenger window enjoying its owner’s new mode of transport.

The spot then cuts to the interior of the vehicle, revealing the other sled dogs buckled into the back seat and the Eskimo behind the wheel of the Kizashi – all of whom are digging the lavish accommodations and warm interior of the car, while bumping their heads and tapping their paws to the song’s beat. The Eskimo pulls up to his igloo and his wife comes out to greet him. With a puzzled look on her face and in her native Inuit tongue, she asks, ‘Where’s the sled?’ The man replies, ‘I traded it in,’ (the conversation is subtitled in English). The Inuit Eskimo driver trades in his sled for a new Kizashi to the surprise of his wife.”

Star Wars: The Clone Wars “The Box” episode debuts on February 3, 2012, and Cartoon Network has two clips to show off from the upcoming episode.

The Plot: “Which bounty hunters will be the last ones standing? It’s a tournament of champions, Star Wars-style, in the next all-new episode of The Clone Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi is still deep undercover as the criminal marksman Rako Hardeen, and he’s done such an impressive job that he’s qualified for Count Dooku’s ultimate test: surviving the Box.

The Box is a technological marvel, a reconfiguring obstacle course where sloppy players are eliminated, because Dooku needs the best if he’s going to carry out his wicked plot to kidnap the Chancellor. A dozen of the galaxy’s most skilled and notorious bounty hunters are selected to compete for the mission – including the unforgettable Embo, who makes a return appearance. Cad Bane also enters the fray, and he’s been keeping a close eye on ‘Rako.’ Can Obi-Wan prove his skills to survive to the finish, without revealing he’s a Jedi Knight?”

The January 31, 2012 Michael Jackson episode of Glee proved to be super popular with Gleeks, with Grant Gustin and Naya Rivera’s “Smooth Criminal” in particular a break-out hit that’s on track to sell 100,000 downloads by February 5th (according to Billboard). But it wasn’t just “Smooth Criminal” that went down smoothly with viewers. The Glee gang hit mostly high notes with this tribute to the King of Pop, which included Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin,” “Bad,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Black Or White,” “Human Nature”/”Nature Boy” mashup, “Scream,” “Never Can Say Goodbye,” “Ben,” and “I Want You Back.”

The comedy series The Exes will be returning to TV Land for season #2 this coming June, so says Larry W. Jones, president, TV Land. The Exes, starring Donald Faison, Wayne Knight, David Alan Basche, Kelly Stables, and Kristen Johnston, averaged 1.5 million total viewers over its first season and earned a .65 Adults 25-54 rating and a .81 among Women 25-54.

Announcing the renewal, Jones stated, “The Exes has proven to be an excellent addition to our primetime line-up. This cast of seasoned comedy performers and a writing team led by Mark Riesman are what keep our viewers coming back week after week. We can’t wait to get started on the second season.”

The Plot:

The Exes revolves around divorce attorney Holly (Johnston) as she introduces her newly-single client Stuart (Basche) to his new roommates – ladies’ man Phil (Faison) and homebody Haskell (Knight), who share an apartment which Holly owns. Things start off a little shaky when the two bachelors have reservations about living with clingy Stuart, but Holly is right across the hall to help them avoid any catastrophes. To top it all off, Holly’s assistant, Eden (Stables), doesn’t exactly let her professionalism get in the way of prying into her boss’s personal life.

‘Good Deeds’ Trailer: The New Tyler Perry Movie

Tyler Perry's Good Deeds

Does it seem like there’s a new Tyler Perry movie every month? There are so many of them that I’ve lost track of what Perry’s got going on.

His latest movie, Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds, hits theaters on February 24, 2012 starring Perry, Thandie Newton, Brian White, Rebecca Romijn, Jamie Kennedy, Eddie Cibrian, Jordenn Thompson, Beverly Johnson, Phylicia Rashad, and Gabrielle Union. As per the norm, Perry also wrote, produced, and directed the film. The man apparently doesn’t need to rest.

The Plot:

A successful, wealthy businessman, Wesley Deeds (Tyler Perry) has always done what’s expected of him, whether it’s assuming the helm of his father’s company, tolerating his brother’s misbehavior at the office or planning to marry his beautiful but restless fiancée, Natalie (Gabrielle Union). But Wesley is jolted out of his predictable routine when he meets Lindsey (Thandie Newton), a down-on-her-luck single mother who works on the cleaning crew in his office building.

When he offers to help her get back on her feet, the chance encounter with someone so far outside his usual circle ignites something in Wesley. This one good deed may finally spark his courage to exchange the life that’s expected of him for the life he’s always really wanted.
