‘Slow Horses’ Season 3 Trailer Reveals an MI5 Team Has Gone Rogue

The trailer for Apple TV+’s Slow Horses season three opens with Jackson Lamb (played by Gary Oldman) complaining that while he needs a crack team to take on rogue MI5 agents and retrieve Catherine Standish, all he has at his disposal are the dysfunctional Slough House bunch.

The third season of the critically acclaimed spy thriller will premiere on November 29, 2023 with the release of the first two episodes. New season three episodes will arrive on Wednesdays through the season finale on December 27th.

The six-episode season is based on Mick Herron’s third book of the Slough House series, Real Tigers. In addition to Gary Oldman, the cast includes Academy Award-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas, BAFTA Scotland Award-winner Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, and Christopher Chung. Freddie Fox, Chris Reilly, Samuel West, Sophie Okonedo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan, and Jonathan Pryce also star in season three.

Newcomers to the Slow Horses world include Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù as Sean Donovan and Katherine Waterston as Alison Dunn. Sean Donovan’s described as the former head of security at the British embassy in Istanbul. Alison Dunn is an MI5 agent who uncovers a dark secret at the heart of the agency.

Will Smith (Veep, not the Oscar-winning actor) adapted the series and serves as an executive producer along with Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Douglas Urbanski, Gail Mutrux, Jane Robertson, and Graham Yost. Saul Metzstein directed season three.

Apple TV+ offers this description of the award-winning drama:

Slow Horses is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. In season three, a romantic liaison in Istanbul threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. When Jackson Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the fight, they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI5 itself.”

The streaming service has already given the series an early season four renewal order.

‘Murder in Boston’ Docuseries Explores a Murder That Rocked a Community

HBO has set a December 4, 2023 premiere date for Murder in Boston, a three-part documentary series that delves into the 1989 murder of Carol Stuart in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood. Carol’s husband, Charles “Chuck” Stuart, claimed an unknown Black assailant shot him and his pregnant wife (the baby, Christopher, died shortly after being delivered via caesarean section). The highly controversial investigation and racial profiling by law enforcement lit a fire under simmering racial tensions.

“After Carol succumbs to her injuries that night, Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn declares a citywide manhunt for the killer. When Carol and Chuck’s baby also dies just days after being born, the homicides are thrust further into the spotlight,” reads HBO’s synopsis. “As the mostly Black and Latino residents of Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood suffer aggressive raids, ‘stop and frisk’ searches, and some questionable police tactics, the already fraught relationship between residents and Boston Police disintegrates.

Fanned by the media uproar and simmering tensions, and with skepticism from the Black community and some members of the press about the veracity of Chuck’s story, the police face increasing pressure to solve the case, and Boston is transformed into a powder keg as the quest for an arrest reaches a critical juncture.”

Murder in Boston incorporates archive coverage of the murder, as well as interviews with people directly affected by the investigation, as it explores key issues that contributed to Boston’s race relations troubles over the decades.

Jason Hehir (The Last Dance) directs and serves as a producer along with Jake Rogal, Nicholas Eisenberg, and Jillian Moosmamm. Joie Jacoby and The Boston Globe’s Linda Pizzuti Henry and Dan Krockmalnic executive produce. HBO’s Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez also executive produce.

The documentary series is an HBO Documentary Films and The Boston Globe production.

Murder in Boston Episode Guide

  • Episode 1: “Roots”
    Debut date: MONDAY, DECEMBER 4 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
The shocking shooting of a white couple at the hands of an alleged Black assailant makes headlines and Boston’s facade and a progressive city begins to slip as its unsavory legacy of racial violence and segregation again comes to the fore. Tensions escalate as police descend upon the Black community, arresting their first suspect – a Black man in Mission Hill whose possession of an Adidas tracksuit puts him in their crosshairs.
  • Episode 2: “Rampage”
    Debut date: MONDAY, DECEMBER 11 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
After evidence against their first suspect falls apart, the Boston Police Department continues its aggressive targeting of Black neighborhoods, eventually leading to a second suspect, a local man named William Bennett with a long police record. Bennett is arrested and held on an unrelated charge, while police continue to gather evidence against him. Newspapers vie for the chance to tell Chuck’s story as media and police ignore issues in his version of events.
  • Episode 3: “Reckoning”
    Debut date: MONDAY, DECEMBER 18 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
In a shocking twist two months after the murder, Chuck commits suicide and surprising revelations emerge from his brother, Matthew. Troubling errors in the police investigation also come to light and the Black community responds in anger at the prejudicial manhunt and the media’s handling of the story. Bostonians are left to confront the lasting impact of the Stuart case and to reflect on the enduring damage to their city.

‘The Bear’ Starring Jeremy Allen White is Renewed for Season 3

The Bear Season 2

FX’s critically acclaimed, award-winning comedy The Bear has been renewed for a much-deserved third season. Season one earned 13 Emmy Award nominations and currently sits at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Season two, which premiered in June 2023 on Hulu, earned a 99% fresh rating, which is incredibly impressive for a sophomore season.

Jeremy Allen White leads the cast as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, Ayo Edebiri stars as Sydney Adamu, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Richard “Richie” Jerimovich. The season two cast also included Abby Elliott as Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, Lionel Boyce as Marcus, Liza Colón-Zayas as Tina, Edwin Lee Gibson as Ebraheim, and Matty Matheson as Neil Fak. Edwin Lee Gibson and Oliver Platt returned in recurring roles, and Jon Bernthal and Jamie Leigh Curtis guest-starred.

Christopher Storer (Ramy, Eighth Grade) created the series and serves as an executive producer along with Joanna Calo, Hiro Murai, Josh Senior, and Matty Matheson.

The Bear, which wowed audiences in its first season only to achieve even greater heights in season two, has become a cultural phenomenon,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment. “We’re so proud to partner with Christopher Storer, Joanna Calo, Josh Senior, and the rest of the creative team, as well as the brilliant cast led by Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. What they and the crew have done is truly remarkable, and we and our partners at Hulu join fans in looking forward to the next chapter in the story of The Bear.”

Season three is expected to premiere in 2024 on Hulu.

FX offered this description of The Bear season two:

“Season two followed Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, Sydney Adamu, and Richard “Richie” Jerimovich as they worked to transform their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot. As they stripped the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertook transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future.

Of course, it turned out the only thing harder than running a restaurant was opening a new one, and the team had to juggle the insane bureaucracy of permits and contractors with the beauty and creative agony of menu planning. The transition brought a newfound focus on hospitality as well. As the entire staff was forced to come together in new ways, pushing the boundaries of their abilities and relationships, they also learned what it means to be in service, both to diners and each other.”

In addition to its 13 Emmy nominations, The Bear has been recognized with a WGA Award, PGA Award, Film Independent Spirit Award, American Cinema Editors Award, and an ACE Eddie Award. It was also named the AFI TV Program of the Year, and Jeremy Allen White won SAG and Critics Choice awards for lead actor in a comedy series.

‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ Episode 2 Recap

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Episode 2

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode two opens with a time jump forward of 10 years. The Civil War’s over, and Bass has settled into the life of a farmer alongside his beloved wife, Jennie.

(Spoilers ahead – you’ve been warned!)

Bass (David Oyelowo) and Jennie’s (Lauren E. Banks) farm is infested with locusts, and the crop is destroyed. The only option is to burn the field and hope for better luck next season. But in the meantime, the Reeves need to figure out how to make some money.

A possible answer to their financial worries arrives in the form of Deputy US Marshal Sherrill Lynn (Dennis Quaid). Sherrill explains that he and another deputy went to arrest a man named One Charlie on Choctaw land. One Charlie got the jump on them and killed the deputy, and Sherrill needs Bass’ help speaking to One Charlie’s wife since Bass knows Choctaw. An added bonus is that Bass is a better shot than the deceased deputy.

Judge Parker has approved Sherrill’s request to sign Bass up as a posse man. Bass turns him down, insisting he’s just a farmer now.

After Sherrill leaves, Jennie wonders why he turned the job down, given their precarious financial situation. Bass believes that she and their four – soon-to-be five – children are enough of a reason not to get involved. Jennie knows her husband’s good with a gun, never wasting a bullet when he shoots their food. Still, Bass prefers to stay on the farm, insisting he’s content.

Jennie questions whether that’s the truth.

Apparently, Bass decided to take the payday as the next scene shows him riding off with Deputy Sherrill Lynn. They’re miles from town when Sherrill welcomes Bass to an area known as the Dead Line, home to a wide variety of outlaws.

While Bass is away, Jennie visits town and admires a piano through a shop’s window. Her window shopping is disturbed by a man who wants to talk about Reconstruction, Black paradise, and the formation of an entire state to call their own.

Jennie doesn’t have any desire to continue this conversation and quickly puts an end to it.

Back on the road, Bass and Sherrill spot a covered wagon with its contents spewed around and horses missing. It belongs to the Commonwealth Bible Society, and inside is a gravely injured man who manages to say, “Run,” before outlaws on horseback appear over the horizon. Bass and Sherrill quickly dispatch them, and Sherrill helps himself to anything of value on the dead bodies – much to Bass’ disgust.

The only occupant of the wagon is dead, and Bass says a prayer as Sherrill expresses his opinion that prayers don’t help. Sherrill’s stunned that Bass can still believe in a God who allowed him to be put in chains.

They make camp for the night and discuss the war, with Sherrill of the opinion that all Indians are savages and no better than animals. He shows off the scar on his forehead where one attempted to scalp him while holding him down with a knee on his throat.

“Black, white, or red, we all just men,” says Bass. Sherrill disagrees.

The following morning, they head out to locate One Charlie, whose name comes from the fact that there isn’t another Charlie like him. Their arrival at the settlement is barely acknowledged, and before they knock on One Charlie’s door, Sherrill assigns them roles: he’ll handle the rough stuff while Bass will do the talking since he speaks the language.

When no one answers the door, Sherrill attempts to kick it open without any success. Instead, he shoots the lock and is greeted by One Charlie’s wife pointing a loaded shotgun at his face. Bass manages to calm the situation down before anyone is injured and forces Sherrill from the house so he can speak with the woman alone.

Bass apologizes for the door and compliments the woman on keeping a neat house. It’s obvious Charlie doesn’t live there, and the woman, Nita (Crystle Lightning), reveals Charlie is her cousin – not her husband. She’s been forced to pay his debts, and she’s tired of the trouble he’s caused in her life.

As he’s leaving, Bass places money on the table to repair the door. Nita asks that he return with news of Charlie if something happens.

Using Nita’s information, Bass and Sherrill locate Old Charlie and pin him down in a house. Gunfire is exchanged and Sherrill is hit in the arm, but the wound’s not serious enough to take him out of the action. He provides cover fire as Bass makes it around the back of the house. Bass attempts to talk Old Charlie out of the house, assuring Charlie he’ll bring him in alive if he surrenders.

Sherrill has other plans and tosses in a bottle bomb (now referred to as a Molotov cocktail), setting Charlie and the house on fire. Charlie emerges from the house engulfed in fire, and Bass does the humane thing and kills him as he screams in agony.

Back at the Reeves’ farm, Jennie’s face is lit up with a smile as men arrive with the piano she purchased. Her mood shifts a bit when she notices a young man (Arthur Mayberry, played by Lonnie Chavis) is making eyes at her oldest daughter, Sally.

Night falls and Jennie checks on the children, making sure they’re sound asleep in their beds. Her due date is near and she’s restless. A noise outside draws her attention, and she steps out with a rifle to discover wolves have killed one of her calves. A shot fired into the air scares them away, and she puts the calf out of its pain after comforting the poor animal.

Meanwhile, Bass cauterizes Sherrill’s wound as Sherrill attempts to justify killing Old Charlie by reminding Bass that Charlie shot first. Their disagreement ends with Bass punching Sherrill in the face and leaving the campsite in the dead of night, even though it means he won’t get paid.

Bass respects Charlie’s cousin’s wishes and stops by her house on the way home to tell her Charlie’s dead. Nita’s not surprised and says he flirted with death every day.

Morning arrives, and Jennie finds the opening the wolves made in the fence that allowed them to grab a calf. Arthur walks up as Jennie’s inspecting the broken wood, and Jennie nicely yet firmly warns him not to come around until Sally’s older.

That evening, Bass is greeted with hugs and kisses as he steps through the door. He soaks up the love before noticing there’s a piano in the living room. Jennie reveals she paid for it by promising the store her husband was about to get a decent payday. Bass is forced to break the news that his payday went up in smoke.

“I hit another white man,” says Bass. He apologizes and promises to figure out a way to pay for the piano.

Days pass and Bass is busy tilling the field while his children sit on the porch and Jennie tends to the chickens when Sherrill and two other deputies ride up. Neither Sherrill nor Bass will apologize for what was said or done, but Sherrill admits that Bass is meant to be a lawman.

Sherrill spoke with Judge Parker about Bass, and Parker wants to make Bass a Deputy US Marshal.

“You think you can handle the weight of the badge?” asks Sherrill Lynn.

“I know I can,” replies Bass Reeves.

In a quiet moment together later that night, Bass and Jennie have an opportunity to talk about their family. They know Sally’s a dreamer and she’ll eventually leave home. They also know she won’t be the same when she returns. However, Bass believes love will keep the family bonds strong – no matter what Sally does in the future.

Bass thinks God has shown them the way, and he’ll do his will by dispensing justice.

‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ Episode 1 Recap

Lawmen Bass Reeves Recap
David Oyelewo as Bass Reeves and Shea Whigham as George Reeves in ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ episode 1 (Photo Credit: Emerson Miller/Paramount+)

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode one introduces David Oyelowo (Silo, Selma) as the legendary lawman whose life was dedicated to protecting the peace in the Old West. Reeves was credited with arresting over 3,000 criminals while serving as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, and it’s not a stretch to believe he might have been one of the inspirations for The Lone Ranger.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves was created and written by Chad Feehan, based on the books Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book One and Hell on the Border: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book Two by Sidney Thompson. Episode one focuses on the last days of Bass Reeves’ enslavement and the time he spent with the Seminoles, with David Oyelowo delivering a powerful performance as the runaway slave turned gunslinging lawman.

And now, onto our episode one recap. Warning: there are plenty of spoilers ahead.

Pea Ridge, Arkansas – March 1862

Bass Reeves rides alongside slave owner Major George Reeves as the 11th Texas Cavalry regiment of the Confederate Army is attacked by Union soldiers. Many men turn tail and run, but Major Reeves (Shea Whigham) orders the remaining men to advance and engage the enemy. He hands Bass a rifle and demands that he follow him into battle and kill Union soldiers.

Bass is forced to follow George as they charge across the field on horseback, but it’s not until backup arrives in the form of Native Americans riding with Confederate soldiers that the tide turns. The men of the 11th regiment, who’ve hung back to avoid being wiped out, join the fight.

Bass watches as a white Confederate soldier (played by Barry Pepper) scalps a Union soldier.

Elkhorn Tavern, Arkansas:

The brutality of war is on full display as soldiers lose their limbs and cling to life in a hospital. Bass is confronted by a Union prisoner and told he’s fighting for the wrong side. Bass knows this, but as a slave, he has no choice but to do as George Reeves commands.

Bass waits on the officers as they discuss the results of the battle, which includes the taking of 200 prisoners. However, 1,000 Confederate soldiers are either dead, injured, taken prisoner, or have deserted the army. Despite that, General Earl Van Dorn (David Lee Smith) believes God favors the Confederacy.

George Reeves speaks up, confronting Van Dorn and pointing out that the supply train hasn’t arrived. They marched too quickly, and Van Dorn ordered them to leave the wagons behind against the advice of the officers. They’ve been outmaneuvered and are without supplies, and all blame lies at General Van Dorn’s feet.

The soldier Bass witnessed scalping a man engages Bass in a quick chat, pointing out they’re both wolves and a breed apart from the others. Bass doesn’t respond.

General Van Dorn dismisses Major Reeves, and while walking through the town, George points out it’s a confederacy of dunces. Bass agrees and packs up their belongings to head back home.

They stop to camp overnight on their way home, and George reminds Bass – at gunpoint – that he’s still his master. He also argues that he’s not deserting the regiment; Van Dorn ordered him to leave, and he had no choice. Bass is back in George’s good graces after dropping multiple compliments about George’s verbal take-down of General Van Dorn.

As they settle in for the night by a campfire, George assures Bass there’s no reason to learn to read or write. Blacks don’t go to Heaven, so reading the Bible is unnecessary. “Only white folks go to the big dance, boy. If anybody’s going anywhere,” says George.

George’s wife isn’t home when he and Bass arrive at the Reeves estate in Grayson County, Texas. George is disappointed by the lack of a warm reception after being away at war, but Bass is overjoyed to reunite with Jennie (Lauren E Banks) in the slaves’ quarters. The war’s over for Bass, and he and Jennie waste no time in reconnecting.

They’re naked in bed when George bellows from the big house, demanding Bass’ attention. It turns out George’s family is visiting his wife’s folks, and George has been hitting the bottle hard while all alone.

Bass is shocked when George offers him a shot at freedom. In appreciation of Bass’ heroics in battle, George announces he’ll set him free if he beats him in a round of cards. Bass is right to be skeptical, as it’s immediately obvious that George had no intention of freeing him. Bass has a plain flush, but George reveals he has four queens. That’s impossible since Bass drew a queen and played it earlier.

They scream at each other, spouting Bible verses as weapons before resorting to fists. Bass beats George about the face, screaming that he’s a cheater. Leaving George unconscious, Bass grabs George’s pistol and returns to Jennie. She orders him to take a horse and leave, forcing him to promise he’ll never look back. She loves him deeply and doesn’t want to see him strung up.

Bass rides like the wind in the dead of night, only stopping to shoot three men who want to take him in. His horse balks at crossing the river, and he sets her free and swims to the other shore as dogs are heard heading his way.

Lawmen Bass Reeves Episode 1

Indian Territory – March 1862

Bass is in poor shape, bare feet bloody and painful, causing him to walk carefully. He’s starving and scares crows away from a dead snake that he takes over eating. Rain falls at night, and he’s chilled to the bone but continues his slow, torturous journey.

He’s asleep during the day when a gunshot startles him awake. A woman asks if he’s Seminole, and he replies, “Runaway.” That was apparently an acceptable answer as when he comes to again, he’s in a home with a young boy who doesn’t understand English. (He speaks Creek.) Bass manages to indicate he needs water before he slips back to sleep.

Bass is finally strong enough to emerge from bed and joins the woman who found him outside. She’s busy shoeing a horse and describes the area as a long way from anywhere. She introduces herself as Sara Jumper (Margot Bingham), and while she doesn’t want him there, she offers him a chance to stay at her home – for now – if he’ll help around the farm.

Over dinner, Sara explains that the Seminole fought in Florida to be free and never surrendered. They never made a treaty with the government, and her people now live in this area. Her husband died in the white man’s war so that the boy, Curtis (Riley Looc), would never wear chains.

Bass digs in and pulls his weight, even learning how to fish with his hands. He grows stronger each day and forges a genuine bond with young Curtis.

Turkey Creek Trading Post – May 1865

Three years have passed since Bass was fortunate enough to become a part of Sara and Curtis’ family. Bass and Curtis are picking up supplies at a trading post when Union soldiers arrive. Bass, who’s learned how to speak Creek, assures Curtis the white men are nothing to worry about.

A soldier asks Bass to interpret and explain to the trading post owner what he needs, and Bass does so to keep the peace. Bass and Curtis even earn a little extra for loading the supplies in the wagon. It’s while performing that task that Bass discovers that inside the wagon are Confederate prisoners, including the scalper – Major Esau Pierce – from the Battle of Pea Ridge.

It’s during their discussion that Bass learns the Union Army won the war. (The war ended on April 9, 1865.) When Bass mentions the name of this trading post, it seems to jar something in Esau. He suggests Bass collect his boy and take off immediately.

”Collect your whelp and take flight. Hell is coming on wings of its own,” warns Esau.

Bass shouts for Curtis, and almost immediately, a gunshot rings out. Confederate soldiers on horseback emerge from the woods and begin killing the Union soldiers. Bass is knocked to the ground repeatedly during the melee, and Curtis reacts by grabbing a rifle.

Curtis points it at Esau and orders him to stop. Bass yells at Curtis to put down the gun, but instead he cocks the pistol. Esau responds by shooting the boy before fleeing with his men.

Bass brings Curtis’ body home and helps Sara bury the boy. Sara insists her loss can’t be Bass’ and that he needs to take Pistol (the horse) and be brave by returning to Jennie. Sara’s aware his heart still belongs to another woman.

Grayson County, Texas – July 1865

Bass does as Sara suggested and returns to the Reeves estate. He pauses in front of the main house before heading to the slaves’ quarters, which are now completely empty. He strokes the bed he shared with Jennie and is surprised when Mrs. Rachel Reeves (Jessica Oyelowo) walks through the door.

Rachel knew Bass would be back and assures him George isn’t around right now. George is busy being a politician working toward reclaiming the things they lost in the war. Bass correctly points out those “things” were people.

Fort Smith, Arkansas is Bass’ next destination after learning Jennie might have settled there. He makes his way through the town and comes across Jennie hanging laundry. There’s a child named Sally at her feet, and Bass fades into the shadows as he watches them interact.

Later that evening, Jennie and Sally are out for a stroll and come across Bass seated outside a store. Jennie is stunned to see the man she loves, and Bass breaks the silence by saying, “I hope he treats you right.”

Jennie’s confused and then realizes that Bass believes she has a new man. She assures Bass her man does treat her well, although he has a bad habit of disappearing and is as stubborn as a mule. Bass asks for the man’s name, and Jennie replies, “Bass. Bass Reeves.” She then picks up Sally and tells Bass to say hello to his daughter!

Bass sobs and falls into Jennie’s arms. Reunited, hopefully for good, they return to Jennie’s place where Bass begins to get to know his adorable little girl.

ENHYPEN Performs “Keep Swimmin Through” in ‘Baby Shark’s Big Movie’

ENHYPEN sing, dance, and invite Baby Shark fans to have a fin-tastic time in the “Keep Swimmin’ Through” music video. The K-pop group transforms into a band of belugas for the feature film Baby Shark’s Big Movie…and that’s an incredibly weird sentence to type.

The South Korean boy band will be following up their animated belugas adventure by appearing at the 97th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and performing the single from the film’s soundtrack. Baby Shark‘s 18-foot-long float will be populated by the Shark family hanging out amid an underwater seascape.

“Keep Swimmin’ Through” is the second video released from the animated kid-friendly film. The first, “It’s Stariana,” featured the voices of Ashley Tisdale as Stariana and Lance Bass as Lance Bass, the host of Tidal Request Live.

Baby Shark’s Big Movie was directed by Emmy Award winner Alan Foreman and features the voices of series regulars Kimiko Glenn, Luke Youngblood, Natasha Rothwell, Eric Edelstein, Debra Wilson, and Patrick Warburton. The guest lineup includes Tisdale, Bass, ENHYPEN, Cardi B, Aparna Nancherla, Ego Nwodim, and Chloe Fineman.

The Baby Shark film will premiere in December 2023 on Paramount+.
