From Canines to Contenders: The Best Movie Performances of 2025

Weapons Best Performances of 2025

There were plenty of great performances in 2025. Some were better than others. Here are, in no particular order (except maybe for the first one), my personal favorite performances of the year. And again, these are my, James Jay Edwards’, favorite performances and no one else’s.

So, on with the Best Film Performances of 2025 list…

1 – Indy the Dog/Good Boy
At the top of this list has to go Indy the Dog, the canine protagonist in Ben Leonberg’s Good Boy. Dog or not, Indy’s performance is special. He expresses more emotion and charisma in a single glance than most actors can muster in a whole movie. Of course, some of the credit here has to go to Leonberg, since Indy is his dog and the movie took a year and a half to shoot, even with its meager 73-minute run time. But still…as the owner of three dogs, I can say there’s no way I could have gotten a performance like Indy’s out of any of my mutts, no matter how many takes we did.

2 – Amy Madigan/Weapons
This year’s “that was her?!?” award has to go to Amy Madigan in Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Her chameleonic transformation into the wicked Aunt Gladys is nothing short of remarkable. Not only is her performance memorable, but she also seems to be having a blast doing it. Madigan created a horror villain for the ages and got to have fun at the same time. She definitely understood the assignment.

3 – Rose Byrne/If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Although the movie itself is kind of uneven, Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You features a powerhouse performance from Rose Byrne. Byrne plays a woman named Linda whose world is collapsing around her, with her having to take care of a chronically ill child and needing to deal with a massive housing catastrophe, all while her husband is away on business. Byrne simultaneously captures the essence of hopelessness and hopefulness, seeming both optimistic and pessimistic while she tries to hold it together for the sake of her daughter. And her portrayal is nothing short of career-defining.

4 – Jessie Buckley/Hamnet
Jessie Buckley has established herself as one of her generation’s premier actresses, and her performance in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet further solidifies that ranking. Hamnet is essentially about William Shakespeare, but the story belongs completely to Buckley’s Agnes, who is the wife to Will’s absentee husband. Agnes deals with loneliness and the challenge of raising her family alone while Will is away writing, and this eventually leads to the loss of one of their children.

Buckley portrays Agnes’s constantly on-the-edge persona effortlessly, able to get an emotional reaction out of the audience with little more than a facial tick or a half smile. Some of the performances on this list will go unrecognized, but Buckley will be an Oscar frontrunner.

5 – Jennifer Lawrence/Die My Love
There seems to be a theme with absentee/neglectful fathers this year. Lynne Ramsey’s Die My Love is another movie about a woman on the edge, although Jennifer Lawrence’s Grace is a bit more on the edge than the others. Die My Love is a movie about hardcore postpartum depression, and Lawrence has a field day with it.

It’s a Lynne Ramsey movie, so it’s a bit disjointed and erratic, but that just adds fuel to the fire for Lawrence’s visceral performance. J-Law dials it up to eleven, and there are no brakes on that freight train.

6 – Zoë Kravitz/Caught Stealing
Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing was a bit of a disappointment, but the film has two bright spots. One is Tonic the Cat, who has since been overshadowed by Indy the Dog as Animal of the Year. The other is Zoë Kravitz. Her character is essentially the “love interest,” but she provides heart and soul to an otherwise sterile film. And honestly, she’s the only likeable character in the movie, so she’s the only one the audience actually cares about.

And now, let’s move on to the men…

7 – Dwayne Johnson/The Smashing Machine
There’s no argument that former professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a movie star, but can he act? His performance in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine answers that question with a resounding YES. Oddly enough, the role of pioneering UFC fighter Mark Kerr seems as if it would be the closest to The Rock’s actual persona, but this feels like the first time audiences have seen him not just as himself but as an actual three-dimensional character. And he’s awesome.

8 – Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis/Bugonia
With Bugonia, it seems as if auteur Yorgos Lanthimos took the reins off of his actors a bit and let them go outside of the usual stoic, wooden vibe of his earlier movies. Lucky for him, he assembled an amazing cast to cut loose.

Jesse Plemons’ Teddy is an eerily controlling conspiracy theorist who always seems right on the verge of losing control. His partner in crime, Aidan Delbis’ Don, is the reluctant voice of reason, always questioning Teddy even though he goes along with him. Together, their dynamic crafts a powerful tension that always feels like it’s going to boil over. Bonus points to Emma Stone for completing the trio in this movie, and it says a lot about the guys that her performance is the weakest of the three. It’s not weak at all, but Plemons and Delbis are just better.

9 – Michael B. Jordan/Sinners
For my money, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was hands-down the best movie of the year, and Michael B. Jordan was the anchor. He played a set of twins, so there’s twice the Jordan in the movie, and he was able to give each of the guys their own separate personality aside from just wearing a different outfit or which one was smoking a cigarette. It’s a powerful performance in a powerful movie, and all from a powerful actor.

10 – All the kids in The Plague
Writer/director Charlie Polinger’s The Plague is about a water polo camp where the participants, all early teen boys, go through typical early teen things like bullying and discovering girls. While the name above the title is Joel Edgerton, the real stars of the movie are the boys.

Kenny Rasmussen plays the target of the bullying (the one with “The Plague”), and Everett Blunck portrays the one boy who is on the fence about joining the bullies or being friends with the outcast. The rest of the campers are played by Kayo Martin, Lennox Espy, Lucas Adler, Elliot Heffernan, Colton Lee, and Caden Burris. The Plague is a pure ensemble movie, and every cast member pulls his weight. These are names to remember.

(Honorable mention goes to the ensemble in Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk, which includes Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Charlie Plummer, Garrett Wareing, Ben Wang, Joshua Odjick, Jordan Gonzalez, and Tut Nyout. These names are worth remembering as well, although they’re a bit older than the kids in The Plague and have been around the block a few more times.)

Top 10 Movies of 2025 List: Horror Dominated This Year’s Films

Top 10 Movies of 2025 Sinners
Michael B. Jordan as Stack in “SINNERS” (Photo © 2025 Warner Bros. Ent.)

It’s the end of another year, and that means you’re probably being slammed with Top 10 lists. Well, here’s one more.

Keep in mind that I am the “horror guy,” and honestly, this is the first year in a long time that my “horror” list and my “normie” list of top tens are exactly the same. So that tells you what a memorable year in horror we’ve had.

Also keep in mind that these are my choices and mine alone. Your mileage may vary.

So on with the show…

2025’s Top 10 Movies:

10 – Presence

Presence is one of two major American Steven Soderbergh releases this year, and while Black Bag may have been his commercial offering, Presence is his artistic one. It’s a haunted house story with a twist – the story is told from the point of view of the ghost. So, it’s basically a fly-on-the-wall movie about a family in turmoil, but once all the pieces fit into place, it’s unforgettable.

9 – Keeper

And speaking of two major American releases…director Oz Perkins got to try his hand at a Stephen King adaptation with The Monkey, and while that wasn’t bad, it wasn’t very “Oz Perkins.” Keeper is much more his style, in the same vein of Longlegs and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. It’s an atmospheric slow-burn tale about two lovers in a remote location, but it’s not your average cabin-in-the-woods movie. It’s one of those movies that has the viewer just hoping and praying that it sticks the landing, and luckily, in the end, it does.

8 – Vicious

Vicious is a movie that earns its name. It’s a Bryan Bertino movie, who also brought us The Strangers, The Monster, and The Dark and the Wicked, and it fits neatly into his usual dirty, mean-spirited mold. It’s about a young woman who receives a spooky gift that keeps on giving. Dakota Fanning playing against type helps bring this nasty little story to vivid life.

7 – The Long Walk

It’s been a banner year for Stephen King with projects like The Monkey and The Life of Chuck, but director Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk is the most impressive of the bunch. This post-apocalyptic tale is, as the title implies, mostly a bunch of young men walking and talking, only the deep conversations are broken up by violent gunfire every now and then.

No one writes dialogue quite like screenwriter JT Mollner, and no one could bring that dialogue to life quite like Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson. A heel turn by Mark Hamill is just icing on the cake. And with the talented ensemble cast, The Long Walk may be this generation’s Stand by Me.

6 – Bugonia

Bugonia is, quite simply, Yorgos Lanthimos being Yorgos Lanthimos. It’s more accessible than the filmmaker’s previous works, and it feels like he’s giving his actors a bit more freedom to craft their own characters, but it’s still full of that quirky, reality-grounded fantasy for which he has come to be known. It’s about a pair of conspiracy theorists who believe they have uncovered an alien plot to destroy the Earth. This modern dystopia tale is both thought-provoking and highly entertaining.

5 – Bring Her Back

Bring Her Back is the second outing from the Philippou Brothers, the duo who scared the heck out of us with Talk to Me a few years back. This is more of the same watch-through-your-fingers, make-you-cringe-in-discomfort type of horror – very visceral, very disturbing, and very, well, terrifying. Sally Hawkins is absolutely brutal as a foster mother who has big – and unscrupulous – plans for the kids she takes in. Bring Her Back will follow you home after it ends.

4 – Weapons

The simple premise of Zach Cregger’s Weapons – that an entire class of school children except for one kid could run off into the night and vanish – provides a far deeper mystery that ends up in pure mayhem. Some people hated that mayhem, but personally, I thought it went off the rails in the perfect way. And Amy Madigan’s Aunt Gladys is destined to become one of modern horror’s most iconic villains.

3 – Good Boy

Sort of like Presence earlier, Ben Leonberg’s Good Boy is a haunted house movie with a twist – it’s told from the viewpoint of the faithful dog. It sounds like a gimmick, and it is, but it works. Indy, the dog at the heart of the film, is both charming and talented, and honestly should be nominated for some Best Actor awards. Only the most heartless of viewers will find themselves not squarely on his side. And for those wondering, yes, the dog lives.

2 – Companion

One of the things this year that I am eternally grateful for is the fact that I got to see Drew Hancock’s Companion before the “twist” was spoiled in the marketing. If you haven’t heard anything about it, watch it cold. It’s not the movie it starts out as. What begins as a simple-albeit-creepy little romcom turns into…something else. And I don’t want to say any more about Companion just in case anyone else is lucky enough to have not heard anything about it before they see it.

1 – Sinners

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is the whole package. Script, music, acting, direction – they’re all top-notch. It’s going to be fun to see the Academy Awards crowd try to spin Sinners as “not horror” just because it’s so good. It’s a vampire movie! But, because it’s set in the Jim Crow era deep south, it’s also so much more than that. It’s quite simply the year’s best movie.

‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Season 4 Episode 10 Finale Recap

Mayor of Kingstown season 4 finale recap

Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown season four episode nine ended with Mike, Kyle, Stevie, and Ian pinned down in Don’s Diner. Episode 10, the season finale, picks up with the foursome and Sarah (the waitress) still hiding inside as bullets pepper the diner.

(The following is a recap of season four episode 10, “Belly of the Beast,” and there are spoilers.)

Sarah (Jessica Steen) slides Kyle (Taylor Handley) her gun and he and Mike (Jeremy Renner) shoot back. Their assailants are wearing body armor and firing automatic weapons, and Ian (Hugh Dillon) only has his and Stevie’s handguns as he emerges from a side exit. He flanks the attackers and fires with both weapons. Ian draws their attention before hiding behind a truck. While they’re focusing on Ian, Mike steps outside and shoots the two men out front. Unfortunately, another attacker enters the diner and makes his way toward Stevie and Kyle.

Stevie (Derek Webster) pretends to be dead as he walks by and then makes his move. He’s wrestling over the man’s gun when Kyle fires a few shots.  Mike runs back in as Kyle’s beating the man senseless. Mike reminds Kyle they need one guy alive.

More cops arrive and after escorting Stevie to the ambulance, Ian tells Captain Walter (Rob Kirkland) that this is just some payback from prison orchestrated by Callahan. Mike and Ian deny there were three gunmen, even though witnesses described there being three. Captain Walter agrees to go with two.

Callahan listens to the police radio chatter describing two dead men in full tactical gear. He knows the third guy’s in for a world of pain. And, of course, he’s right.

Meanwhile, Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa) calls Kevin (Denny Love) and tells him today will be his last day as a prison guard. Bunny’s going to set him up with something better, and Kevin’s relieved it’s over.

Mike beats Billy as they demand that he tell them how to contact Callahan. Billy insists he lives by a code, so Mike continues with his torture. Billy refuses to say anything helpful.

Keno (Derek Basco) informs Ian that Stevie’s okay and that the bullet missed the artery. Ian reminds him to make sure he’s told first if Callahan’s located.

Mike continues cutting away at Billy, but Billy won’t break. When Billy mentions that Callahan’s been busy taking care of something else, Kyle understands he’s talking about Callahan personally killing Tracy. Billy keeps talking and seems to let slip that Callahan is still in Kingstown.

Kyle takes over beating Billy, losing control as he asks about Callahan’s location. Billy still doesn’t give up anything useful, so Mike finishes him off with a bullet to the head. Mike calls Bunny to clean up the dead body and has Ian take Kyle away.

Mike’s next stop is to check in with Bunny, and Bunny confirms he’s going scorched earth on the Colombian cartel both inside and outside of prison. He’ll take care of it all so that Mike can concentrate on Callahan and the Aryan Brotherhood.

Warden Nina Hobbs (Edie Falco) tells Cortez (Derek Rivera) that she’s lifting the lockdown, and Cortez reveals Torres didn’t cry when he died. After he leaves, Mike calls and says it’s time to lift the lockdown. Hobbs confirms that’s her plan but wonders why Mike wants it. He explains that he wants blood to be shed to cure the situation in prison.

Ian and Kyle sit outside the McLusky house, which was burned in the fire started by Callahan’s firebug minion. Kyle insists that he will personally take out Callahan, and Ian is fine with this plan.

Cindy (Laura Benanti) is waiting outside Mike’s office when he pulls up. They hug and she asks about the attack on the diner. Cindy admits she’s having a tough time after killing Breen, even though she saved Kyle’s life. Watching Breen mow down the prisoners has affected her, and she wants Mike to just walk away. He refuses, unwilling to desert Kyle.

Ian calls Mike to confirm Kyle’s at their house and that he’s staying in town. Mike wants to just finish this and swears to Cindy it’s going to be okay.

Kyle walks around his childhood home, which is now covered in ashes and soot. He pulls out a metal case filled with his dad’s personal items, including his gun. Kyle briefly smiles as he touches his dad’s badge before walking away with his gun.

Mike heads to Shaver’s house and hears a police radio inside. He walks through the house, gun drawn, searching for Callahan. The bathroom towel is damp, and there’s a bloody bandage on the floor. Mike calls Ian and informs him Callahan was just there. He’s certain Callahan’s not running.

Helicopters circle above Kingstown as Ian notes the town’s in lockdown.

Mayor of Kingstown season 4 finale recap

Kevin delivers a phone to Raph (D Smoke) who immediately calls Bunny. Bunny orders him to take care of business inside today after Hobbs releases the Crips from lockdown. While Raph’s attacking the Colombians inside, Bunny will launch his attack outside.

Hobbs is shocked that Cindy came back to work, given what she just went through. Hobbs suggests she focus on the fact she saved a good man, but moving forward won’t be easy. Cindy will be assigned to the infirmary today, which should be the least stressful duty.

Raph’s men prepare for war as the lockdown lifts. They head straight to the Colombians’ cells. Outside, Bunny orders his guys to come in hot on the cartel warehouse. Automatic fire rings out, grenades are launched, and it’s a full-on battle. Bunny and two of his men drive around back in case Colombians try escaping out the backdoors. Cortez and two Colombians emerge, and Cortez’s men are immediately killed. Cortez drops his weapons and gets on his knees, silently surrendering without putting up a fight. He’s knocked out.

Raph’s at the front of the line as the Crips and Colombians begin fighting on the walkway in front of a row of cells. It’s a brutal fight and Raph is repeatedly stabbed as he leads the Crips. He’s forced to work his way behind his men, barely on his feet. Even stabbed multiple times, he manages to throw a Colombian over the railing to his death.

The guards finally rush toward the melee.

Callahan walks into the police station, hands up and claiming to be unarmed. He wants to turn himself in. Ian, who seems to have just won something on a lottery scratcher, advances toward Callahan, gun drawn and ordering him to get down. He sends the other cops out, warning Callahan he won’t find sanctuary at this station.

Unfortunately for Ian, Captain Walter orders him to place Callahan in the box. Ian quickly calls Mike with the news that he was thwarted from walking Callahan out the back door. Captain Walter hasn’t charged him yet but he’s in interrogation. Mike wants Ian to keep him out of the system and get him to the railyard.

Infirmary duty is keeping Cindy hopping after the Crips vs Colombians fight. Raph’s still alive and being treated. Kevin walks through the infirmary and is stabbed in the neck by a Colombian. Cindy rushes to his side as Kevin dies in a pool of blood on the floor. (It’s obvious Mike told Hobbs who to sacrifice to the cartel to get them off her back about the hijacked shipment.)

Mayor of Kingstown season 4 finale recap

Kyle, still at his family’s house, loads his dad’s gun.

Bunny is questioning Cortez when Mike calls and warns him to keep the guy alive. They need to know who he reports to.  Bunny steps out of the room while his men beat Cortez as he talks to Mike.

Captain Walter believes Callahan is a purely evil man. He knows Callahan will plead guilty here and in Ohio, and he’ll be sent right back to prison. That’s not a punishment. Walter allows Ian to remove him from the station as if he was never there.

Cortez works himself free of his handcuffs and kills Bunny’s guys before escaping out the back. Bloody handprints show where he jumped out of the building.

Ian brings Callahan, still in handcuffs, to Mike and Callahan starts running his mouth. Mike hits him in the face, and Callahan jokes that, after a few hits, he’ll be out of it and won’t feel a thing. Callahan claims he’s not afraid to die.

Callahan tells Mike to get it over with as Mike points a gun at his head, just a foot or so away.  He thinks Mike’s going to kill him, but that’s not the plan. Kyle drives up and Callahan’s shocked. Kyle starts with a punch to the stomach that doubles Callahan over. His next hit is a brutal punch to Callahan’s head, which takes him to his knees. Callahan taunts Kyle about Tracy’s murder and laughs. Kyle has Ian stand Callahan up and Callahan smiles.

Kyle shoots him in the groin and Callahan screams in pain. He can’t stop panting and screaming, and Kyle walks up and places his dad’s gun to Callahan’s forehead. Callahan finally looks scared as Kyle shoots him. Kyle adds more bullets to the body, firing until Mike convinces him it’s over and to walk away.

Mike hands Ian Kyle’s gun.

The final scene of season four is of Kyle breaking down crying in his brother’s arms.
