“Smoke & Mirrors” Plot: Frank clashes with the Dream Team when one of the members becomes the focus of a departmental investigation. Also, Jamie and Danny team up to investigate a series of carjackings involving one of Danny’s criminal informants. Blue Bloods Plot:

Blue Bloods is a drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner, and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as chief.

A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son, Danny, a seasoned detective, family man and Iraq War vet who on occasion uses dubious tactics to solve cases with his partner and new mother, Detective Maria Baez. Erin, the middle daughter, is a New York assistant D.A. who serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father, while also pursuing a run for district attorney. Jamie is the youngest Reagan, a Harvard Law graduate and the family’s golden boy.

Unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and follow in the family footsteps as a cop. He’s found a friend and ally in his wife, Eddie, who keeps him on his toes, and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force.

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Movie Review

Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves
Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Chris Pine in ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ (Photo Credit: Paramount)

What do you get when you team up a warrior, a young inexperienced wizard, a shape-shifting tiefling druid, and a charming, cocky thief? You get the four main characters of the fantasy adventure/comedy Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

The movie kicks off in a frozen wasteland where a prison houses Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), a pair of thieves up for early parole. Edgin attempts to regale the parole board with a tale of how he and Holga fell into a life of crime. He reveals they were charged with taking care of his young daughter and that they only ever stole from those who could afford it and never, ever hurt anyone.

His story is actually a ploy to delay the parole board’s decision until a missing member of the board arrives. When he does, Edgin and Holga are successful in pulling off a clumsy but effective escape and head out to return to their home in the land named Neverwinter, completely unaware they were about to be granted parole.

Not long after arriving home, Edgin and Holga discover their friend and former partner in crime, Forge (Hugh Grant) – whom Edgin asked to take care of his daughter Kira when their last heist went bad – is now the leader of the land and lives in a gigantic, well-fortified castle. He’s turned Kira against her father by convincing her that Edgin abandoned her for untold riches.

After barely escaping Forge’s guards and an evil female wizard, Edgin and Holga become determined to rescue Kira from Forge.

Knowing they’ll need powerful magic, Edgin and Holga enlist the help of another friend from their crime days – Simon (Justice Smith). Simon’s a wizard with low self-esteem who is less than enthused by their plan to infiltrate Forge’s castle and save Kira. Fortunately, he’s eventually talked into it by Edgin. However, Simon warns Edgin and Holga they’ll need the help of a shape-shifting tiefling druid named Doric (Sophie Lillis) to pull it off.

So now the new ragtag band of four thieves heads off on their quest to save Kira from Forge, a quest that will lead them to deal with all kinds of dangers including running from an undead army, questioning skeletons, battling an incredibly powerful Red Wizard and…yes…facing, fighting, and running from an overweight, but still very deadly, dragon.

Based on the popular D&D game that originated in the mid-1970s, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek, fantasy adventure that never finds its rhythm or tone and, sadly, wastes most of its talented cast. Lord of the Rings it’s NOT!

Hands down, the best part of the film is Chris Pine’s performance as Edgin, a likable, energetic thief whose charm, wit, and positive attitude make him the perfect leader of the group. Pine has solid comedic timing and delivers the most entertaining performance in the film.

Unfortunately, the talents of Michelle Rodriguez are wasted due to the fact that her role is one-dimensional. Rodriguez’s Holga is a tough warrior who took Edgin and Kira under her wing during the darkest part of their lives. They become a makeshift family, but Rodriguez is never allowed to really branch out of Holga’s tough warrior exterior.

It’s even worse for Sophie Lillis as Doric, the shape-shifter who’s missing from the screen more than half of its running time because her character is constantly changing into other creatures including a mouse, deer, cat, bug, and a giant owlbear. When Lillis is on the screen her character stands around looking stern and emotionless. This is a true waste of such a talented young actress.

The film’s tone is another issue as it’s all over the place, even within a scene. The film fluctuates between comical and goofy to extremely dark, horrific, and way too intense for children under 12. The film’s at its best when it fully embraces the silliness of battling mythological creatures.

Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is an uneven, cheesy, fantasy outing that could and should have been a lot more entertaining.

Jeffrey Nordling returns to guest star as Gus Easton on CBS’s So Help Me Todd season one episode 17, “The First Date is the Deepest.” Directed by Daniel Willis from a script by Earl Davis, episode 17 will air on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT.

Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden stars as Margaret Wright, Skylar Astin plays Todd Wright, and Tristen J. Winger is Lyle. Madeline Wise plays Allison, Inga Schlingmann is Susan, and Rosa Arredondo stars as Francey.

“The First Date Is the Deepest” Plot: Margaret helps a client who lost his mother during a routine surgery at Allison’s hospital, performed by her colleague Dr. Ross Woods (Benjamin Hollingsworth). Also, Margaret and Gus go on their first date and Todd is asked by the firm to investigate Gus.

The Plot:

Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin star as razor-sharp, meticulous attorney Margaret Wright and Todd, her talented but scruffy, aimless son whom she hires as her law firm’s in-house investigator. As the black sheep of the well-heeled Wright family, Todd is a laidback, quick-thinking, excellent former private detective who fell on hard times after his flexible interpretation of the law got his license revoked. Margaret’s penchant for excellence and strict adherence to the law is at complete odds with Todd’s scrappy methods of finding his way through sticky situations: by the seat of his wrinkled pants.

When Todd inadvertently teams with his mother on a case, she’s surprised to find herself duly impressed by – and proud of – his crafty ability to sleuth out information with his charm and his wide-ranging tech savvy. At last, Margaret sees a way to put her son on a “suitable” path to living an adult, financially solvent life she approves of, and she asks him to join her firm. Todd agrees since it means getting his license back and once again doing the job he excels at and loves.

Mother and son working together is a big first step toward mending their fragile, dysfunctional relationship, and they may even come away with a better understanding of each other at this pivotal point in their lives. But whether Todd and Margaret will be able to accept each other for who they are is another case entirely.

‘Ghosts’ Season 2 Episode 19 Photos, Cast, and “Ghost Father of the Bride” Promo

Will Pete’s daughter decide to hold her wedding at the Woodstone B&B? That question’s asked and answered on CBS’s Ghosts season two episode 19, “Ghost Father of the Bride.” Directed by Jay Karas from a script by Julia Harter and Liz Alexander, episode 19 will air on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 8:30pm ET/PT.

Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar lead the cast as Samantha and Jay, the living residents of the mansion. Playing the mansion’s resident ghosts are Brandon Scott Jones as Isaac, Richie Moriarty as Pete, Danielle Pinnock as Alberta, and Asher Grodman as Trevor. Román Zaragoza stars as Sasappis, Sheila Carrasco plays Flower, Rebecca Wisocky is Hetty, and Devan Chandler Long plays Thorfinn.

Episode 19 guest stars include Alex Boniello as Crash, Caroline Aaron as Carol, and Holly Gauthier-Frankel as Laura.

“Ghost Father of the Bride” Plot: After learning that Pete’s daughter, Laura (Gauthier-Frankel), is getting married, Sam – at Pete’s behest – tries to convince her to hold her wedding at Woodstone B&B. Also, Alberta and Isaac team up to solve the mystery of what happened to Crash’s (Boniello) head.

The Plot:

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast – only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home.

The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th-century (Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Samantha’s ancestor (isocky), to name a few.

The opening of the B&B is a source of intrigue, anxiety, and curiosity among the spirits, but they’ll gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant – Samantha.

‘Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant’ Offers a Behind-the-Scenes Look

Jake Gyllenhaal and co-writer/director Guy Ritchie briefly discuss their new action film The Covenant in this short behind-the-scenes featurette. Ritchie describes the story as an inspiring concept of what one person’s prepared to do for another when push comes to shove.

Gyllenhaal, who plays US Army Sergeant John Kinley, adds: “Like any great action movie, at the heart of it is a real relationship and I think in the end you will be moved.”

The action thriller also stars Dar Salim (Game of Thrones), Antony Starr (The Boys), Alexander Ludwig (Heels), Bobby Schofield (Black Sea), Emily Beecham (1899), and Jonny Lee Miller (The Crown). Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies co-wrote the screenplay, and Ritchie, Atkinson, John Friedberg, and Josh Berger serve as producers. Samantha Waite, Olga Filipuk, Robert Simonds, and Adam Fogelson executive produce.

The R-rated drama opens in theaters on April 21, 2023.
