IDW’s ‘Korgi’ and ‘Bacchus’ in Series Development

Korgi Comic Book

IDW’s confirmed six of its comic books/graphic novels are now in the “active television series development” stage, including Korgi and Bacchus. Shows based on Dragon Puncher & Spoony, Lodger, Relic of the Dragon, and Satellite Falling are also in the development stage.

IDW’s announcement included details on writers and executive producers currently attached to the projects.

“It’s a dream to get to work on so many great properties with so many amazing talents,” stated Paul Davidson, IDW Executive Vice President. “This group of writers, directors, and showrunners represent some of the best and IDW is pleased to be working with them.”

KORGI – Aury Wallington (Spirit Untamed) joins as showrunner for the television series based on writer-artist Christian Slade’s beloved dog opus that follows the stories of a Korgi pup in epic fairy tales of adventure. A fantasy world filled with creatures both adorable and abominable, Korgi is a coming-of-age tale about the friendship between a young fairy and her magical puppy as they uncover the secret history of their homeland and face evil monsters threatening their idyllic community.

BACCHUS – Will Davies (Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile) and Chloe Moss (Switch) will write and executive produce the series which is based on Eddie Campbell’s subversive drama that drops the gods of ancient Greece into present day as if they had never left. Campbell’s graphic novel, published by IDW imprint Top Shelf Productions, imagines what the Gods of our past might be doing in present day among mere mortals.

DRAGON PUNCHER & SPOONY – Holly Huckins (Recess) is set as showrunner and executive producer for the series based on the book Dragon Puncher by James Kochalka, published by IDW imprint Top Shelf Productions. The Eisner Award-winning comedy adventure chronicles the exploits of Dragon Puncher, a cute but rather ruthless kitty who dons his heroic armored battle suit as he punches out evil dragons together with sidekick Spoony (a fuzzy little friend armed with a wooden spoon).

LODGER – Max and Adam Reid (Gil’s All Fright Diner) will serve as showrunners and Patricia Riggen (The 33) will direct the psychological thriller based on David and Maria Lapham’s IDW-published graphic novel of a young woman bent on revenge against a serial killer who she blames for the murder of her mother and incarceration of her father. A dark, grimy game of cat and mouse in the best tradition of crime noir, Lodger is a twisted love story set against a tangled American landscape.

RELIC OF THE DRAGONBryan Q. Miller (Shadowhunters) joins as showrunner for the series based on the graphic novel by Adrian Benatar and Miguel Ángel García. The fantasy action-adventure follows the journey of Uric, an ordinary man hunting for a relic of enormous power. The most dangerous undertaking of his life, the choices Uric makes along the way will change his life forever – along with the fate of his entire nation.

SATELLITE FALLING – Will Pascoe (Orphan Black) has been named as showrunner/executive producer and Jude Weng (Finding ‘Ohana) is attached as director/executive producer for the series adaptation of Satellite Falling, based on the comic books by Steve Horton, Stephen Thompson and Martin Morazzo. Set in a seedy future of radical technology, sentient aliens, and familiar prejudices, Satellite Falling is a sharp social commentary about the horrors of xenophobia.

As a corrupt Earth maintains a human-only planet, incredible creatures from across the galaxy are forced to gather on Satellite, a city-sized space station near our planetary system. Lilly, the lone human on Satellite, makes her way as a cabbie by day and a bounty hunter by night. But as tensions between aliens and humans reach their breaking point, Lilly’s world begins to fall apart as the dark secrets of her past come back to haunt her.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Review: ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ Starring Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell

Lady Chatterley's Lover Emma Corrin and Jack O'Connell

Romantic and sexy, the latest adaptation of D.H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover has Emma Corrin (The Crown) as the titular Lady and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) as the Lady’s working-class lover, Oliver Mellors. Lawrence’s work, controversial in its time, has been adapted countless times over. Thanks to the sizzling chemistry between Corrin and O’Connell, director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s version is one of the best.

Screenwriter David Magee’s adaptation of Lawrence’s classic novel arrives on Netflix in 2022 as a luscious bodice ripper and rebuke of society’s expectations and restrictions within well-defined classes.

The wealthy Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett) and the lovely Connie Reid marry before Clifford heads off to fight in the Great War. He returns a different man, paralyzed from the waist down and unable to fulfill his wife’s needs emotionally or physically.

It’s not due to any desire of his for Connie to find comfort and sexual fulfillment outside their marriage but rather Clifford’s selfish need for an heir that prompts a shocking proposal. It’s at his urging that Connie takes a lover, although Clifford prefers not to know who she chooses. Would Connie have ever acted on her attraction to the ruggedly handsome gamekeeper if not for her husband’s shocking suggestion? Perhaps. But the detached way Clifford tossed out the idea certainly added to her dissatisfaction with their marriage.

Mingling among the classes is frowned upon, yet Lady Chatterley is drawn to the intelligent, thoughtful gamekeeper employed by her husband to care for their estate. Their first real encounter comes when Connie gently holds a chick, overcome with wonder at the delicateness and beauty of the bird. This bird reminds her of the fragility of life, and she holds tight to Oliver who accepts the embrace and acknowledges her pain.

Their first sexual exploration eventually follows, beginning their affair with the unspoken acknowledgment of their mutual need to allow their bodies to feel a primal connection. As they grow to understand each other, their relationship transitions from lust to love. They also become free to sexually experiment, and Connie even insists Oliver not treat her like a “Lady.”

Connie blossoms and the changes are noticeable to anyone who cares to look. Fortunately for Connie and Oliver, Sir Chatterley is blind to Connie’s newfound happiness – at least for a while. But as tongues begin to wag and gossip spreads throughout the town, Connie’s put into a situation where she must make a choice between a loveless, lifeless marriage and giving up everything for love.

Benoit Delhomme’s exquisite cinematography brings the 1920s alive. A muted color palate evokes a sense of confinement and restriction upon the world Connie and Oliver inhabit, with only sporadic splashes of vibrant color signifying Connie’s sexual awakening. Isabella Summers’ score compliments the love story and never overshadows or attempts to dictate the mood.

Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell do a fabulous job of making us feel the heat between Connie and Oliver. The couple’s relationship begins with an almost naïve gentleness and transitions into a much more passionate love affair that fulfills both sexually, emotionally, and intellectually. Corrin and O’Connell’s performances capture that evolution from self-restraint to completely giving themselves over to each other.

Matthew Duckett’s not given much room to ingratiate himself with the audience. Clifford’s incredibly insensitive to the plight of the working class, and his boorish behavior makes it easy to view him as the villain. That Clifford doesn’t display any redeeming qualities also makes it easy to root for the star-crossed lovers, not that viewers will need a push toward doing so.

Director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover is smartly paced, superbly shot, and features compelling performances by Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell. A beautiful tale of sexual awakening, Lady Chatterley’s Lover invites viewers to get swept up in Connie and Oliver’s love story. It’s an invitation you should accept.

‘Emily in Paris’ Season 3 Trailer Starring Lily Collins

The trailer for season three of Netflix’s Emily in Paris finds the titular character attempting to figure out what direction to take with her career and with her personal life.

“This season has everything that I love from the first two seasons, but elevated to an even higher level,” says Lily Collins. “The other characters get to flourish, as well. What’s really exciting is getting to see all of the other characters as much as we see Emily. We have fabulous characters, played by fabulous actors, and we get to see even more of them this season.”

In addition to Lily Collins as Emily Cooper, the third season stars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie Grateau, Lucas Bravo as Gabriel, Ashley Park as Mindy Chen, and Camille Razat as Camille. Samuel Arnold plays Julien, Bruno Gouery is Luc, William Abadie is Antoine Lambert, and Lucien Laviscount stars as Alfie.

Series creator Darren Star returns to guide Emily in Paris as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Andrew Fleming, Tony Hernandez (JAX Media), Lilly Burns (JAX Media), Alison Brown, and Robin Schiff.

“This season, Emily is much more involved and invested in making her life specifically in Paris, and figuring out what that means. She’s fully pursuing a new relationship with Alfie — but there’s still this mutual attraction with Gabriel that haunts both of them. She gets to expand her presence at work this season, too, and she has some big choices to make in terms of where her loyalty falls,” explains Star. “Emily really grows and matures this season, and she works so hard to become part of the French world, and working on her French language skills. She’s going through the experience that any expat goes through when they start spending time in Paris: the French way of life starts to seep into them. Emily becomes more of a citizen of Paris as the season evolves.”

The 10-episode third season arrives on December 21, 2022.

One year after moving from Chicago to Paris for her dream job, Emily finds herself at a crucial crossroads in every aspect of her life. Faced with two very different paths, Emily will have to decide exactly where her loyalties lie — at work and in her romantic life — and what those decisions mean for her future in France, all while continuing to immerse herself in the adventures and surprising twists and turns that life in Paris provides.

‘Cocaine Bear’ Trailer: Yes, It’s a Real Thing and Yes, It’s Based on a True Story

This is real? This isn’t an early April Fools’ Day joke? A bear actually ingested cocaine and there’s a movie about it… Incredible. Add Cocaine Bear to your Must-See Movies of 2023 list immediately.

“On a rampage for blow and blood. Meet COCAINE BEAR.”

According to Kentucky for Kentucky, ex-narcotics cop turned drug smuggler Andrew Thornton II’s parachute didn’t open and he plunged to his death. Andrew was wearing a bulletproof vest and had cocaine in a duffel bag when he was discovered dead in someone’s yard in Knoxville. A short while later, a black bear was also discovered dead as the result of eating an incredibly large amount of Thornton’s cocaine.

The bizarre story of the black bear, nicknamed Pablo EskoBear, continued after the poor creature had been stuffed and put on display at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area visitors center. EskoBear’s body ultimately moved from that location to a pawn shop to Waylon Jennings’ possession to a Vegas mansion owned by Ron Thompson to a Chinese medicine shop to its final – hopefully – location in a Kentucky mall.

Cocaine Bear Poster

Universal Pictures offers this synopsis of the film version of Cocaine Bear’s life:

“Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild dark comedy finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow … and blood.”

The cast includes Keri Russell (The Americans), O’Shea Jackson, Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Christian Convery-Jennings (Sweet Tooth), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family). Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (BlacKkKlansman), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Hannah Hoekstra (Charlie’s Angels), and Aaron Holliday (Sharp Objects), (The Americans) and Ray Liotta (The Many Saints of Newark) also star.

Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 2) directs from a screenplay by Jimmy Warden (The Babysitter: Killer Queen). Miller, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Max Handelman, Brian Duffield, and Aditya Sood produce, with Robin Mulcahy Fisichella, Alison Small, and Nikki Baida executive producing.

Cocaine Bear opens in theaters on February 24, 2023.

‘The Best Man: The Final Chapters’ Trailer and Series Details

The cast and creator of the popular The Best Man films reunite one last time for the limited series The Best Man: The Final Chapters which just dropped an official trailer and new poster. Debuting on Peacock on December 22, 2022, The Best Man: The Final Chapters catches up with the characters from 1999’s The Best Man and 2013’s The Best Man Holiday as “relationships evolve and past grievances resurface in the unpredictable stages of midlife crisis meets midlife renaissance.”

The eight-episode series stars Morris Chestnut, Melissa De Sousa, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Harold Perrineau. The Best Man creator Malcolm D. Lee developed the series with Dayna Lynne North, with Lee and North co-showrunning, writing, and executive producing.

The Best Man: The Final Chapters Poster

“When I wrote The Best Man, it was out of a desire to see myself on screen. Growing up I rarely saw Black people — Black men in particular – the way my friends and I saw ourselves: educated, upwardly mobile African-Americans who were just ‘normal’ (Barack and Michelle before Barack and Michelle).

Fans of the franchise have consistently asked me (and the stellar cast) when are we going to tell them what’s happened with this group of friends? And what better way to do that than to give them what they want (and more) in a limited series. Given the moment that we are in, this is the perfect time to revisit Harper, Lance, Murch, Quentin, Jordan, Robyn, Candace and Shelby and go on the wild, emotional, hilarious ride with them, as they deal with their own journeys through parenting, activism, old love, new love and the complexities of being Black in 21st Century America,” stated Malcolm D. Lee, who also directed four episodes.

“This limited series will expand on the themes established in The Best Man franchise – love, friendship, faith, forgiveness, and personal growth – all filtered through a beautifully Black lens. Much like it was on my previous series Insecure, friendship as foundation is also a core theme,” stated Dayna Lynne North.

Additional directors include Charles Stone III, Robert Townsend, and Stacey Muhammad.
