‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ Shows Off a Teaser Trailer and Character Posters

The one-minute teaser trailer for Netflix’s The Witcher: Blood Origin reveals the world of elves before the events of The Witcher. The teaser for the four-part prequel was accompanied by new posters featuring the characters Scían (Michelle Yeoh), Fjall (Laurence O’Fuarain), and Éile (Sophia Brown).

The event series’ cast also includes Minnie Driver as Seanchaí, Mirren Mack as Merwyn, Lenny Henry as Balor, Jacob Collins Levy as Eredin, and Lizzie Annis as Zacaré. Huw Novelli plays Callan “Brother Death”, Francesca Mills is Meldof, Amy Murray is Fenrik, Nathaniel Curtis stars as Brían, Zach Wyatt is Syndril, Dylan Moran is Uthrok One-Nut, and Joey Batey is Jaskier.

Declan de Barra created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Lauren Hissrich, Matt O’Toole, Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko (Platige Films), and Jason Brown & Sean Daniel (Hivemind Content). Sarah O’Gorman and Vicky Jewson directed the prequel.

“Viewers will be surprised because they’re going to see a story told about a period of elven history that was buried by the humans after their arrival and eventual conquest of the continent,” said de Barra in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “We get to tell a tale about the elves when they were at their height, like all great societies before their fall.”

Showrunner de Barra also explained how this prequel impacts The Witcher‘s key characters.

Blood Origin sets up certain core characters and fan favorites from the books in the later Witcher series. There are items and discoveries that are made in this world that play off in later seasons of The Witcher and have critical effects on the storyline,” stated de Barra. “Witcher creator Lauren Schmidt, the producers and I spent a lot of time seeding new Easter eggs and answering older Easter eggs from other episodes and series. We’re weaving a complex spider web of delicious story that stretches over thousands of years.”

Netflix offered the following description of the prequel:

“Set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin tells a story lost to time – one of seven outcasts who unite against an unstoppable power that took everything from them. Their blood quest giving rise to a prototype Witcher in a conflict that brings about the ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.”

The Witcher: Blood Origin premieres on Netflix on Sunday, December 25, 2022.

Inside ‘The Crown’ Season 5 with the Show’s New Royal Family

The Crown Season 5
Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce in ‘The Crown’ season 5 (Photo Credit: Netflix)

Netflix gathered The Crown’s new stars – Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Jonathan Pryce, and Dominic West – for a press conference in support of season five. The new season arrives just two months after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and the series’ Queen, Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton, shared her feelings about the thousands of people who stood in line to pay their respects to the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

“I think they felt such huge respect for someone who kept her promise. She just kept her promise and she did the job,” said Staunton. “It amazed me, people’s response to her. I just thought, ‘God, you really admired this woman.’ People say ‘love’ – I think they admired (her). Here we are celebrating a woman who, with her own face – you know what I mean – this woman who just did the job, not anything outside the job, not the stuff around it, just straight line.”

Staunton added: “My thing is that with her connection with horses…horses have blinkers and you just go straight on. And that’s what I feel she always did.”

Imelda Staunton found that one of the biggest challenges of starring as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown was playing someone whose position required her to suppress and internalize her emotions.

“That’s a wonderful acting exercise. There are days I think I might have got it and then days I absolutely haven’t got it,” explained Staunton. “It’s hard but when you’ve got the writing there, that does probably about 80%, if not more, of the work. But the challenge is getting the audience to come inside, hopefully, and see what you’re feeling without showing what you’re feeling, hopefully. I think for all of us, this family – apart from John Major and maybe Diana – we are locked. We are confined with our behavior. But what Peter Morgan is trying to do is give us a life inside that confinement. That’s really, really satisfying to try and investigate.”

Emma Corrin earned an Emmy nomination for her performance as Princess Diana in season four, and Elizabeth Debicki takes on the role of the People’s Princess in season five. Debicki admitted to feeling nervous about playing Princess Di and confessed it wasn’t a role she could easily walk away from at the end of the day.

“The show does feel like an enormous responsibility,” said Debicki. “It’s an enormous challenge. And it’s an interesting process, for me, I found. And it took me some time to understand you’re bringing your interpretation to Peter [Morgan’s] interpretation of this person. But then the people watching the show come […] with such attachment and memory and a sense of ownership, too, over these characters in a way. Not only from the people who’ve played them before but also from their living memory and their history. So, you have to leave a kind of space for that, and it’s sort of a dance between all those things.

It’s a beautiful process, but it’s also very challenging – and very rewarding, I think, too, because we get to work with each other and get to do these wonderful scenes.”

Prince Charles was the target of sharp criticism following his breakup with the incredibly popular Princess Diana. Dominic West steps into the role of Charles as he’s experiencing backlash over his divorce.

During the press conference, West expressed hope that viewers will at least give the Charles he portrays in season five a fair hearing.

“He’s one of the most scrutinized, publicized lives in the world, so it’s hard to know what people know about him,” said West. “This period covers a time when he got…he didn’t get a bad press but he maybe…because it was a divorce and there are always two sides in a divorce, that I suppose viewers heard one or the other, and hopefully there’s a bit of perspective now.”

West continued: “I think that’s part of the reason for doing it. I obviously love the guy. […] Inevitably you take their side or you give them the benefit of the doubt. I hope that will maybe happen when people see Charles in this. I don’t know.”

Season five of The Crown gave Dominic West his first opportunity to work with his son, Senan, who plays Charles and Diana’s son, Prince William.

“It was very moving, actually. He’s never acted before because Covid stopped any school plays or anything. I’d never seen him act and he had this amazing innocence to him that was extraordinary to watch,” said West. “It’s very difficult when you act with children to have a physical intimacy, obviously. And with him that was obviously not a question, which made it much easier. But then when I found when it was more emotional and when it was a difficult scene, it made it much more difficult. You were slightly split in your head between, ‘Okay, we’re acting this part but that’s a bit weird, isn’t it? I’m talking about your mom but not your real mom.’ That, I found quite difficult. But generally, it was really moving and I think he enjoyed it.”

The Crown Season 5 Jonny Lee Miller

Jonny Lee Miller dived into the research to prepare to play John Major, even though growing up in a socialist household Miller thought he knew who Major was and what he was all about.

“He got a lot of flak back in the day, you know? And so, the more I learned about him, the more I began to like him. We had a lot of similarities. We’re from the same part of the world,” said Miller. “And then the more you learned about the work that he did, my respect for him grew massively. So, that’s what you’re trying to do, what anyone’s trying to do when you’re playing whoever you’re playing, is you’re trying to inhabit someone, and you’re trying to sort of fall in love with them. That’s always a fascinating journey, and especially with somebody, I think, who was very misunderstood.”

Jonathan Pryce chuckled when asked if playing Prince Philip and being part of The Crown has changed his perception of the British Monarchy.

“Changed it? No. It’s reinforced my feelings about them. Looking at Prince Philip, it’s made me much more aware of the kind of man he was behind the headlines. I mean, he spent most of his life getting bad press as a kind of grumpy, irascible person who kept saying all the wrong things usually in the Colonies. And finding out more about the man who was behind all that has changed my view of him, essentially,” explained Pryce.

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Trailer: Love Will Give You Life

The official trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio packs quite the emotional wallop. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer for the stop-motion film provides a sneak peek at all the key characters and reveals more about how del Toro’s approach differs from other adaptations of the classic fairy tale.

During a recent press conference, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro explained why he’s fascinated with Pinocchio.

“The two essential fables that define my childhood and teenage years were Pinocchio and Frankenstein,” explained Guillermo del Toro. “It’s this idea that you’re thrown into a world that you barely understand, and you try to make sense of it as you grow. And they’re definitely father-and-son…or they’re stories that deal with that link and that bond.

They were of primal importance for me. And I always felt Pinocchio is one of those handful of characters – there are maybe 10 characters in the history of human storytelling that are capable of being universal and completely adaptable to anything. There’s Frankenstein, Pinocchio, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes. These are characters that, even if you haven’t read the story, you know the story, or you think you know the story. And therefore, you can use them as metaphors for science, for human emotions, for many, many things.”

Guillermo del Toro co-directs with Mark Gustafson and co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale. The voice cast includes Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, and Christoph Waltz. Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman also lend their voices to the animated fairy tale.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is playing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Netflix beginning December 9, 2022.

The Plot:

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion musical directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.

Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille Talk ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5

The official Yellowstone trailer and other video teasers brought advance confirmation that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) has won his election and will become the new governor of Montana in season five. John’s new position in government – plus the fact season four ended with Kayce (Luke Grimes) dropping the cryptic “the end of us” when asked what he saw in his vision quest – indicates it’s going to be rough going for the couple who represent the moral center of the Yellowstone saga – Kayce and Monica (Kelsey Asbille).

The critically acclaimed series never fails to deliver unexpected plot twists, and even the actors aren’t aware of everything that will happen to their characters as the story moves forward. Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille confirmed during our brief season five interview that series creator Taylor Sheridan doesn’t always let them in on his plans for the show. Grimes and Asbille also discussed what life will look like for Kayce and Monica now that John’s taken on the top spot in Montana’s government.

Paramount Network’s Yellowstone kicks off its fifth season on Sunday, November 13, 2022 with a special two-hour premiere.

Yellowstone Season 5 Luke Grimes
Luke Grimes in ‘Yellowstone’ (Photo Credit: Paramount Network)

Can you picture a future where Kayce and Monica will be allowed to just breathe and not be caught up in the Dutton family turbulence?

Luke Grimes: “That would be nice. Sounds great.”

Kelsey Asbille: (Laughing) “Yeah, we shouldn’t lie to you. But you know I think we’ve always rooted for them, for sure.”

They always attempt to do the right thing, even if it’s not easy. And they don’t always make the right decisions. Does that hold true for season five?

Kelsey Asbille: “Yeah. I mean, they face just incredible adversity, and this season is no different. I think it might be the most intense for them. I think they come out as different people, but I think with a new sense of purpose.”

Does John becoming governor really impact their home life and does that draw Kayce even more into the battle to save the ranch?

Luke Grimes: “You know, I think at first John becoming governor is neither here nor there to Kayce and Monica. We have so much going on and we also just kind of have been living in our own world and trying to sort of purposefully not think about what’s going on on the ranch. That’s just always sort of been our thing. It’s like back and forth. But you know John becoming governor means he’s going to have responsibilities somewhere else so it’s possible that that could mean there might be more required of us – or other people.”

Is Kayce still going to put his family first over the ranch?

Luke Grimes: “I mean, I think that’s always been his choice, right? That’s sort of like always been where he’s at and it’s always the choice he’s had to make. He tends to always choose his family. So, if he sticks with his guns that’s normally what he tends to do.”

Does season five show us more of what happened to him during the vision quest and how that’s affected him moving forward?

Luke Grimes: “Yeah, it certainly does. Yeah, I think there are a lot of like unanswered questions about that. I think a lot of people…that was like kind of jarring for a lot of the audience. Like, what is this? What’s going on? What did that mean? Who is this lady? Why is he in his underwear? And I think season five, it starts to kind of make sense of all that and the choice that he has to make and what those paths are and what ‘the end of us’ meant.”

There have been so many twists and turns over the seasons. Do they tell you in advance or do these twists take you by surprise, just like they do the audience?

Kelsey Asbille: “The latter. I think Taylor likes to surprise us.”

Luke Grimes: “Yeah, totally. He doesn’t really give us any spoilers. We get the script kind of not too much before we shoot it. That’s sort of the way it’s been since the beginning.”

In one word, how do you describe season five?

Luke Grimes: “We’ve had problems with this all day… I said tough last time. Go ahead, you got one.”

Kelsey Asbille: “Tremendous.”

Luke Grimes: “Tremendous? Good word.”

‘The Whale’ Trailer: Could Brendan Fraser Reel in His First Oscar?

A24’s first official trailer for The Whale shows why Brendan Fraser is receiving awards attention and why there’s Oscar buzz circling his performance. Fraser, who stars as a reclusive 600 lb. gay English teacher who attempts to reconnect with his daughter, received lengthy standing ovations for his performance at multiple film festival screenings. And pundits are predicting he could swim away with a Best Actor Oscar for The Whale.

In an interview with Variety, Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) explained how he came about casting Brendan Fraser in the lead role.

“As soon as [Brendan Fraser] left my office after our first meeting, I felt it,” stated Aronofsky. “I knew he could play someone who most people would start off by dismissing, but within five minutes they’d start to feel something for him. Then, within 20 minutes, they’re starting to fall in love with the character, because there’s just something about Brendan. Pretty soon, he starts to break your heart.”

Speaking to Newsweek, Fraser, who donned a fat suit for the role, discussed his character’s weight and what he hopes audiences will take away from the story.

“I’m hopeful that we can change some hearts and minds at least in terms of how we think and feel about those who live with obesity,” said Fraser. “So often, those people are dismissed in our society or the object of scorn and derision, and it’s unfair to them. I believe that shaming people for that reason is almost the last domain of prejudice that we overlook, and I think we can do better to change that. So I hope that this film might change some hearts and minds.”

The film is based on the critically acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter, with Hunter adapting his work for the screen. In addition to Fraser, The Whale stars Sadie Sink, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton, and Hong Chau.

A24 is targeting a December theatrical release.

HBO begins production on ‘True Detective: Night Country’

Additional executive producers include Barry Jenkins, Adele Romansky, Mark Ceryak, Mari Jo Winkler, Chris Mundy, writer Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Princess Daazhraii Johnson.
