‘Emancipation’ to Test Will Smith’s Appeal Post-Oscars

Apple Original Films is hoping that by December 2, 2022 moviegoers are going to be willing to take in a new film starring Will Smith. Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), stars the disgraced actor and marks his first major film project to be released following the slap heard around the world.

For those who need a refresher, Will Smith reacted with violence during the 2022 Oscars after Chris Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith walked on stage and slapped Rock, and then warned him to keep Jada’s name out of his mouth. Smith was subsequently barred from attending the Oscars for 10 years and he resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.

In addition to Will Smith, the Emancipation cast includes Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, and Steven Ogg. Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Bivens, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten, and Imani Pullum also star.

William N. Collage wrote the screenplay and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, McFarland Entertainment’s Joey McFarland, and Westbrook Studios’ Smith and Jon Mone produced. Chris Brigham, Antoine Fuqua, James Lassiter, Heather Washington, Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner, and Scott Greenberg executive produced.

A launch on Apple TV+ on December 9th will follow the film’s December 2nd theatrical release.

The Plot: Emancipation tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom. The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.

‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Preview: Premiere Date, Cast, and Plot Details

Netflix’s Firefly Lane season two will arrive in two parts, with the first eight episodes premiering on Friday, December 2, 2022. Netflix hasn’t confirmed the premiere date for the remaining eight episodes of the second – and final – season, other than that they’ll debut in 2023.

Season one of the drama, based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah, premiered in February 2021 and featured Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as lifelong best friends who stuck by each other’s side through thick and thin. Heigl and Chalke reprise their roles as Tully and Kate for season two. Returning cast members also include Ben Lawson as Johnny Ryan, Ali Skovbye as young Tully, Roan Curtis as young Kate, Yael Yurman as Marah, and Beau Garrett as Cloud.

Joining the series for its final season are India de Beaufort as Charlotte, Greg Germann as Benedict, Jolene Purdy as Justine, and Ignacio Serricchio as Danny.

Series creator Maggie Friedman returns as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Heigl, Shawn Williamson, Michael Spiller, and Stephanie Germain.

Friedman, Savannah Dooley, Becky Hartman Edwards, James Ford Jr, Michael Ross, Barbara Johns, Marissa Lee, and Davah Avena are the season two writers. Directors include Sarah Wayne Callies, Vanessa Parise, Michael Spiller, Shannon Kohli, Katina Medina Mora, Monika Mitchell, and Winnifred Jong.

The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

Season 1: The greatest love story of all can be between friends. When unlikely duo Tully (Heigl) and Kate (Chalke) meet at age fourteen, they couldn’t be more different. Tully is the brash and bold girl you can’t ignore, while Kate is the mousy shy girl you never notice. But when a tragedy brings them together, they are bonded for life — forever inseparable best friends.

Together they experience thirty years of ups and downs — triumphs and disappointments, heartbreak and joy, and a love triangle that strains their friendship. One goes on to fabulous wealth and fame, the other chooses marriage and motherhood — but through the decades, their bond remains — until it faces the ultimate test.

Season 2: What could possibly have ended the tight-knit thirty-year friendship of Tully and Kate, our “Firefly Lane Girls Forever”? We’ll learn the answer this season – but first – Kate grapples with the painful aftermath of Johnny’s ill-fated trip to Iraq, while Tully faces a lawsuit after walking away from her talk show, and must start her career over from the bottom. This leads her to search for answers about who she is and where she comes from — including a quest to find the father she never met, against the wishes of her secretive hippie mother, Cloud.

In the ’80s, we see Kate and Johnny first fall in love, creating more than a little drama in the newsroom where they work, as Tully’s career rises and she spars (and flirts!) with cocky sportscaster Danny Diaz. She just might have met her match – that is if they can stop arguing for five minutes. While in the ’70s, teenage Kate and Tully struggle to keep their friendship together as Cloud goes to jail for dealing drugs and Tully goes to live with her grandmother, far away from Firefly Lane.

As the girls face the tumult of high school apart, they know the one thing they really need is each other.

Robyn’s clandestine work and her personal life collide when her smart and observant daughter, Delilah, and her aunt Vi, who lives with Robyn to help her balance life as a working mother, discover her secret career as a vigilante. While Robyn contends with uncertainty at home, she is joined in her pursuit of justice by Melody “Mel” Bayani, an edgy bar owner and sniper from Robyn’s past; and Harry Keshegian, a paranoid and brilliant white-hat hacker.

As Robyn aids the oppressed and exploited, she sometimes works with Marcus Dante, an NYPD detective who once sought to uncover her identity, but now respects the need for Robyn’s type of justice even as he often questions her methods.
