‘Frankenstein’ Official Trailer: The Creature Speaks

Netflix’s teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein was narrated by Victor Frankenstein from his perspective. The official trailer switches that up, allowing the Creature to tell his story. “My maker told his tale. And I will tell you mine,” says Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) as the Creature.

The trailer continues with the Creature revealing he sees the memories of many different men whose bodies were used by Victor to piece him together. He seeks his maker, saying, “I demand a single grace from you. If you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage.” The two-minute trailer ends with the Creature advising his maker, the real monster, to run.

Oscar Isaac (Dune) stars as Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Mia Goth (the X trilogy) plays Elizabeth Lavenza. Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) also star.

“Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.

Guillermo del Toro adapted Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel, directs, and serves as a producer. Additional producers include J. Miles Dale and Scott Stuber.

Frankenstein opens in select theaters on October 17, 2025 followed by a release on Netflix on November 7.

‘High Potential’ Season 2 Episode 3 Recap: “Eleven Minutes”

High Potential Season 2 Episode 3 Recap
Kaitlin Olson and Daniel Sunjata in ‘High Potential’ season 2 episode 3 (Disney/Jessica Perez)

A well-dressed man is attacked as he waits for a special lunch date as ABC’s High Potential season two episode three opens. The café isn’t hidden away, but his table happens to be the closest to the alley.

(The following is a recap of season two episode three, which means there are spoilers ahead.)

Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) serves the kids toaster waffles while they discuss hiring someone to help Ludo out. She asks what they want out of a new helper, and Elliot wants to visit the morgue. Ava (Amirah J) just wants news about her dad, and Morgan promises to check in with Lt. Soto. (Morgan’s deliberately keeping Ava out of the loop until she finds out real information.)

Detective Oz Osman (Deniz Akdeniz) fills Morgan and Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) in on their new case. The victim is Nathan Gould and he was found by the café hostess behind the restaurant with a plastic bag taped around his head. Nothing was stolen and the EMTs were able to get a heartbeat back, but he’s unconscious. He might be brain dead.

An EMT reveals Nathan had a history of “suspicious injuries.” But he was a good guy and the EMTs hope they find out who did this. The hostess is shaken up but confirms he seemed nervous and excited to be meeting someone special. When she returned to the outside tables, he was gone but the pin he brought for this lunch date was still there.

Morgan looks around and deduces the other tables were deliberately left messy to make sure Nathan sat by the alley. The hostess seated him around 7:45am and found him in the alley after hearing ducks quacking.

Morgan didn’t see any signs of duck activity and doesn’t know what the hostess heard. (I’m guessing it was his cell phone’s ringtone.) His apartment indicates he was into sports, but they can’t figure out what team(s) he actually supported. Nathan has a stack of overdue bills, so apparently, he wasn’t a sports fan; he was a sports gambler. That would also explain his weird injuries. He wasn’t paying his bookie.

A man tries to break in as they’re still looking around. He attacks Adam and makes a run for it as Morgan calls Lt. Soto for backup. Soto doesn’t pick up, and Morgan notices the getaway driver outside. She calls down that the cops are coming and he drives off, leaving the perp without a ride. Adam tackles him and places him under arrest.

His name’s Marco DeLeon (Charlit Dae) and Adam thinks he and the getaway driver work for someone Nathan owed money. That person probably ordered the hit on Nathan this morning. Adam recovers a needle in his pocket, but nothing to inject and no weapons. Morgan thinks they’ve misjudged Marco.

Adam and Morgan meet with Marco’s boss, Ray, who doesn’t want to talk to cops. He’s got a crowded card room in the back of his barbershop, and Morgan points out every table has the same ultra-electric card shuffler. Before she can say more about the shufflers, Ray sends everyone out of the room. The shufflers allow the house to stack the odds.

Anyway, the syringe was empty, which meant Marco was going to inject air into Nathan’s bloodstream to kill him. If Ray ordered the earlier hit that should have killed Nathan, he wouldn’t have sent Marco over. Also, the air bubble death would have looked accidental and Ray, given his reputation, would have wanted it to look like a murder. Unless he could profit off Nathan’s natural death, which he would because Nathan made him the beneficiary of his life insurance policy.

Ray claims it was all Nathan’s idea.

Adam and Detective Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie) question Nathan’s daughter, Jessica, the previously named beneficiary of the life insurance policy. Jessica claims she had no idea he even had one. Her parents were divorced, and she wasn’t close to her dad. A few months back he reached out and told her he was going away. He wanted to make things right, so they’ve seen each other more in the last few months than when she was growing up.

Nathan had a ladybug pin with him when he was attacked. It turns out that was his nickname for her when she was a kid. Jessica’s tears are obviously genuine as she confirms she was supposed to meet him that morning, but he wasn’t there. She claims they were supposed to meet at a completely different location, not Dudley Market in Venice.

The team gathers, and Oz reveals Nathan hadn’t made any travel plans before he was attacked. They conclude he was going to kill himself, and that’s why he reconnected with his daughter, told her he was going away, and gave away his dog. So, why would someone kill a guy who was about to kill himself?

Adam and Morgan head to the hospital and learn Nathan is brain dead. Jessica’s with him and is shocked to learn he was planning to commit suicide. But that would explain him giving her his dog. She doesn’t know any of his friends or who he would have spoken with about his plans. Morgan has figured out that Jessica’s pregnant and Jessica says her dad was really excited about that. They bonded over doctor visits; he’d been seeing a cardiologist recently for scans. However, he said he was fine.

High Potential Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

The following morning Morgan tells Ava about her dad possibly being alive in Nevada. Morgan shows her daughter Arthur’s card and explains she didn’t want to tell her earlier because she was afraid that she’d get her hopes up.

Over at the station, Daphne discovered an email to Nathan claiming to be his daughter changing their meeting location. Morgan looks at his alarm settings, and the ringtone is quacks. (I was right!)  It was set for 8:00am, which indicates someone wanted Nathan’s body found at that time—late enough to be brain dead but not dead dead. Morgan believes he was killed for his heart.

Lt. Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) and Adam speak with the EMTs who picked up Nathan, asking about the timeline. After noting that someone just stole more of their albuterol, they confirm the call came in around 8:01am and they were on scene about five minutes later. Nathan’s heartbeat came back about three minutes later. Selena asks how long it would have taken for him to be brain dead and learns it would take 11 minutes.

Adam returns to the station and fills Morgan in on what they learned. She was right; Nathan was turned into an organ donor on purpose. Morgan now believes Nathan was in on it and that’s why he had his heart checked out with the cardiologist. However, when he found out he was going to be a grandfather, he changed his mind. The hired killer murdered him anyway because they needed his heart. They need to find out who his heart is going to. If they find them, they find the killer.

Morgan and Selena question the hospital’s transplant coordinator and she claims not to know who’s getting the heart, which is weird since that’s her job. Adam, Selena, and Morgan get the feeling something’s up because the transplant surgeon also seemed freaked out about the question. Someone powerful is making them stay quiet. The team has until tomorrow to find out where the heart’s going since Nathan’s organs will be removed then.

Morgan gets a call that Ava’s been arrested for vandalizing one of her father’s murals. Adam goes with her to the location and the owner of the building wants to press charges. Adam’s willing to smooth it over with the guy, but Morgan escalates the situation when the officer refuses to remove Ava’s cuffs. Morgan picks up the paintbrush and adds more paint to the mural … and to the officer’s uniform. She winds up taking a seat in lockup next to her daughter until Adam’s able to get them both released.

Later at home, Ava apologizes, and Morgan apologizes too. She didn’t consider the impact of dropping the info right before Ava went to school. Ava confesses that knowing her dad has been alive one state over this whole time is worse than anything she imagined. Morgan doesn’t know why he stayed away but she’s sure there’s a good reason.

Morgan has photos from Nathan’s case laid out on the coffee table and explains she’s looking for someone who needs a heart among the hospital’s largest donors. Ava thumbs through them and spots a photo of Hollywood producer Carson Wood posing at an old movie premiere. He’s been posting old photos and acting like they’re more recent, which means he hasn’t been seen in public in months. Carson could be hiding that he’s sick.

Morgan’s proud that her daughter figured this out.

High Potential Season 2 Episode 3 Recap
Daniel Sunjata, Deniz Akdeniz, Kaitlin Olson, and Javicia Leslie in ‘High Potential’ season two episode three (Disney/Jessica Perez)

Adam and Daphne pay a visit to Carson Wood as he’s being wheeled out by nurses. He’s hooked up to oxygen and looks close to death. Carson claims he’s never heard the name Nathan Gould and is on his way to get a heart transplant. Carson admits he might have pressured St. Clare Hospital to bump him to the top of the list, but the heart he’s receiving is in Utah. St. Clare doctors told him Nathan’s heart wasn’t a good match.

Morgan calls Adam and Daphne to report someone stole Nathan’s heart from the hospital. The hospital confirms everything went normal with the removal, and they packed it for transport. It was stolen after that. The heart can only be outside of the body for six hours before it’s no longer viable.

Someone who knew the procedure must have taken the heart. The team only has four hours left and Selena brings the transplant coordinator in for questioning. She claims not to have had a choice about bumping Carson Wood to the top of the list. It turns out Nathan directed his heart be given to someone, but the hospital committee invalidated his request to give it to Carson Wood. Unfortunately, she deleted the name of the original designated recipient and confesses she never even looked at it.

Adam and Morgan look at all the people on the recipient list who reside in the southwestern US. The heart only has two hours left and Morgan determines some of them live too far away. Others have the wrong blood type and people with the wrong body size are also out. That narrows it to just six, and Morgan thinks from the remaining possibilities she’s figured out who the killer is.

70-year-old Rosemary Caferri at Eaton General is the recipient. She’s the only one on albuterol, which is the drug the paramedics said was being stolen. Morgan discovered one of the paramedics, Christopher Bishop, is Rosemary’s son. Christopher and Nathan got to know each other because of Nathan’s injuries, and he must have offered to give his heart to Rosemary. When he changed his mind about killing himself, Christopher murdered him.

Adam alerts Eaton General about the situation. Morgan realizes this means Rosemary won’t get the heart.

Adam breaks the news about what Christopher did to his mom. Christopher’s already dropped off the heart at the hospital, but he returned when the hospital texted him that they needed him back as the next of kin. He’s currently in custody, but Adam allows Rosemary to see her son. Informed she’ll go back on the waiting list, Rosemary admits she doesn’t care about that anymore.

She gives her son a hug and they apologize to each other.

Later, Morgan gives Jessica the ladybug pin that her dad meant to give her. Jessica believes it’s for her baby. Morgan asks why Jessica let her dad back into her life, and Jessica says it’s the way her mom raised her.

Adam informs Morgan that a 17-year-old girl got the heart instead of Rosemary. It did not go to waste.

‘Hunted by My Husband’ Documentary Focuses on the DC Sniper

Investigation Discovery has set an October 28, 2025 at 9pm ET/PT premiere date for Hunted by My Husband: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper, a two-hour documentary on the killing spree that shook Maryland, DC, and Virginia. The documentary explores the DC Sniper case with insight from the convicted killer’s ex-wife, Mildred Muhammad.

ID offered this description of the true-crime documentary:

Hunted by My Husband reveals the story of the DC Sniper and places Mildred Muhammad—the ex-wife of convicted DC Sniper John Muhammad—at the center of the narrative. Her testimony reveals the chilling reality that the violence that gripped the D.C. area in 2002 was not a series of random killings but part of a calculated plan rooted in manipulation, control, and domestic abuse driven by a single, dark obsession: John’s relentless desire to murder his ex-wife so he could have custody of their three children. The documentary reveals the harrowing torment Mildred endured and the lengths to which her abuser would go to kill her, even at the cost of innocent lives.

In the documentary, Mildred bravely shares her story of survival and the years of emotional, financial, and psychological abuse that preceded his murderous rampage. Through exclusive interviews, never-before-seen home video of the Muhammad family, and commentary from domestic violence experts and law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly to track and identify the snipers, the documentary explores how the justice system, media, and public perception missed critical warning signs of abuse and coercive control and challenges our society as a whole to rethink what we know of domestic violence.”

Hunted by My Husband: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper is part of ID’s fourth annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. ID describes the campaign as part of their “unwavering commitment to shedding light on the multifaceted and complex dynamics of intimate partner violence with resources and programming initiatives.”

“By shining a light on the hidden realities of domestic violence in all its forms, our annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign is designed to empower survivors, educate viewers, and help break the silence that allows abuse to persist,” stated Jason Sarlanis, President of ID. “Through our on-air programming and network initiatives, ID fosters awareness, empathy, and action—and a reminder to survivors and their loved ones that they are not alone and help is available.”

‘Brilliant Minds’ Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: “The Contestant”

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 2
Donna Murphy as Dr. Muriel Landon and Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf in ‘Brilliant Minds’ season 2 episode 2 (Photo by: Pief Weyman/NBC)

Dr. Oliver Wolf and his team help a woman who believes she’s on a reality TV show on NBC’s Brilliant Minds season two episode two. The episode opens with a woman answering an off-camera interviewer and then trying to stop filming when the questioning gets too personal. She injures herself by falling into a class table.

(The following is a recap of season two episode two so there are spoilers ahead.)

Oliver (Zachary Quinto) shows his mom, Dr. Muriel Landon (Donna Murphy), the long letter his dad wrote before he left, and she apologizes he had to go through this again. She’s also sorry that she was right about his dad, and Oliver seems to realize the blame rests solely on his dad’s shoulders.

Dr. Carol Pierce (Tamberla Perry) practices her interview with the hospital board, using Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears) as a sounding board. Josh is pretty harsh in his questioning, reminding Carol that the board will try and break her. Carol confesses that she believed her actions were acceptable. The conversation finally circles around to Oliver and Josh’s relationship, and Josh thinks that whatever Oliver’s feeling, he’s putting into his work.

Speaking of Oliver, he’s keeping busy helping out in the ER. Since his dad’s gone, his schedule has opened up and his interest is piqued when a woman arrives frantically searching for her sister, Lauren. Dr. Anthony Thorne (John Clarence Stewart) explains that Lauren came in claiming she just escaped from a reality show set. He suspects drugs or a psych issue is involved.

Dr. Ericka Kinney (Ashleigh LaThrop) is heading to the emergency room when Dr. Dana Dang (Aury Krebs) jokes that it’s too Zero Dark Thirty without Jessica Chastain and with too much Dr. Thorne in the ER. Dana hates all the yelling and really doesn’t want to go. After she walks off, Ericka quickly takes her meds just as the nosey Dr. Charlie Porter (Brian Altemus) pops in. Ericka hurries off, barely paying him any attention.

Oliver asks Lauren (Molly Bernard) questions while Ericka and Dana examine her injuries. Dana wonders what show Lauren is on, and Oliver is totally confused when she lists her favorites. As Oliver talks, Lauren starts imagining his hair gently blowing in a breeze and that his tone is super flirty. She thinks this ER visit is still part of the show, the hospital isn’t real, and that she’s still being filmed—even though she told the show she wanted out. Lauren points out hidden cameras (that don’t exist) and Oliver plays along and yells, “Cut!”

Oliver tells Dana, Ericka, and Anthony that he thinks she’s experiencing Truman Show Syndrome, and it’s the first time he’s treated it. Charlie shows up out of nowhere and agrees with Anthony that it’s probably meth-induced. Oliver doesn’t think so; while the name is new, the syndrome goes back hundreds of years. Anthony listens to Oliver’s history lesson and doesn’t see the point to a backstory. (He’s in full ER mode.)

Dana suggests it’s possible Lauren is actually on a reality show and that they’re trying to break her.

Oliver sends his team off to try and get blood work, and Lauren can’t believe the show’s recruited her sister, Harper, to make her stay. Lauren believes Oliver and his team are actors … and not even good ones. She actually nails their types, pointing out Oliver’s the broody one, Ericka’s the brainy one, and Dana’s the comic relief. And Charlie’s too hot to be a doctor so he must be intended to be her love interest.

Lauren is in pain but won’t let these fake doctors take her blood.

The team has Harper take a seat in the waiting room while Charlie suggests that since he’s the love interest, Lauren might let him take her blood. When he jokes that he attracts the “crazy one,” Ericka schools him about using that word.

Meanwhile, Oliver and Carol chat over lunch and Oliver insists he’s okay with his dad leaving. Carol admits Josh was annoyingly right when he quizzed her this morning and Oliver thinks he was probably looked hot while doing it. Carol confesses she might have to lie to get her job back.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

Later, Anthony shows Oliver footage of Lauren in the back of a cab. It’s Lauren’s same responses as the opening scene and shows her injuries occurred while breaking the cab’s window trying to escape. Anthony wants to immediately start her on meds.

Lauren races through the hospital trying to get out, knocking over employees while trying to find an exit. She suddenly stops when she comes to a room where a live audience is assembled. Lauren’s actually behind the nurses’ station and the audience is just the waiting room. Harper tells her it’s okay, but Lauren starts crying. She’s grabbed by nurses, and Dr. Thorne takes her away while she begs her sister to make them stop.

Lauren is locked in a seclusion room, and Oliver tells the team Anthony did the right thing. It’s necessary since she almost hurt herself. Anthony wants to wait for Carol’s replacement in psych to check Lauren out, but Oliver thinks the replacement (a potato with a clipboard) will just push meds.

Since her brain is basically on fire right now, Oliver wants to cool the room and cool down their response. He brings painter’s tape into the room and places pieces over the imaginary hidden cameras as well as the real security camera.

The scene shifts to seeing the room through Lauren’s eyes, and it looks like a set. He introduces himself as Oliver W. and Lauren confirms it’s a reality dating show. Oliver says everyone watching is rooting for her. She’s the fan favorite, and Oliver thinks that means she needs to keep playing, which includes taking her medications and letting the doctors take blood. Lauren agrees, even though he’s not a real doctor.

“You’re right. I just play one on TV,” replies Oliver.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

Oliver passes Josh in the hallway and invites him to grab a drink. Josh agrees!

Carol is questioned by the board and doesn’t lie. She admits she continued treating Alison after she learned about Alison’s relationship with her husband. Carol explains she sees herself in her patients and fights for them every time. She always does the best she can. If she’s fired, her patients will lose that commitment.

Later, Oliver thanks Josh for being there helping him celebrate getting Lauren to take her meds. They kiss, but Josh shifts the mood by asking if Oliver’s okay. Carol told him Oliver’s dad left, and Oliver insists he wants everything to go back to how it was before his dad showed up. Josh doesn’t want to be jerked around and thinks Oliver’s house isn’t in order just yet.

Oliver’s forced to cut the conversation short when the hospital buzzes him. Lauren is screaming in pain, and when Oliver arrives, Charlie explains that her abdomen was extended, and she was experiencing shallow breathing. Wolf wonders if she has internal bleeding, which is weird. Charlie thinks they’re missing something.

(Charlie didn’t wake Ericka when he saw she slept through the page to report to Lauren’s room. Instead, he took her place.)

Ericka arrives, apologizing, as Anthony says the ultrasound shows fluid in her lower pelvis they can’t explain. Anthony rushes her into the OR as Ericka tells Charlie she doesn’t miss her pages. He advises her to take it easy on the benzos from now on.

Dana and Oliver look at the ultrasound and confirm Lauren’s ovaries are enlarged. Dana believes she’s been injecting herself with hormones. Oliver pieces together the clues and thinks she’s injecting herself for in vitro fertilization. The bleeding is connected to a recent egg retrieval.

Ericka tries to make up for missing the page by taking care of all of Oliver’s discharges. Plus, she found a case of a man who might have schizophrenia, or it could be something else. Oliver understands her concern, but they can’t force care onto someone who doesn’t want it.

Lauren’s out of surgery and reveals that her boyfriend left, so she picked a sperm donor. It was super expensive and she had to work overtime to pay for it. The lack of sleep and hormonal changes created a mental break since the brain can only take so much. Unfortunately, as they’re talking, Lauren thinks she sees another camera. Oliver suggests that it’ll take time for the brain to heal but it will happen.

Ericka and Dana share the good news that three embryos made it through the fertilization process. Lauren claims she wants them discarded. She just wants to rest and even sends her sister away to be with her family.

As Lauren finally sleeps, Oliver informs Harper the meds should help her heal. She can be discharged soon if she has support. Harper’s pregnant and due in two months, plus she has a toddler at home.

Clinical Director Amelia Frederick (Bellamy Young) from Hudson Oaks Psychiatric Facility interrupts and suggests they can help with Lauren. She thinks they can ease the burden on the hospital and Harper, but Oliver wants to talk it over privately with Harper first.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 2 Recap
Tamberla Perry as Dr. Carol Pierce in ‘Brilliant Minds’ season 2 episode 2 (Photo by: Pief Weyman/NBC)

Muriel tells Carol the vote was split three yes to three no. So, Muriel tendered her resignation as Chief of Staff, telling the board she advised Carol to continue treating Alison. Carol’s stunned when Muriel says she can return as head of psych. She can’t believe Muriel did this, and Muriel insists she decided that because it’s best for the hospital to have Carol back on staff.

Muriel’s leaving the hospital but not Oliver. She’s aware there will come a point when he realizes he’s not fine, and he’ll need Carol more than ever. Muriel confesses she’s been contemplating retirement anyway and is ready for a break.

Harper and Lauren decide it’s best to recover at Hudson Oaks. Before Lauren signs, Oliver says he understands how it feels to be a burden for loved ones. He asks if she’s sure and she confesses she’s not. Oliver spots Carol and wants a second opinion.

Carol confirms inpatient care can be the right decision and that psychotic episodes are just like any other illness. Lots of people have them and can resume normal lives. Carol doesn’t think she has permanent psychosis. Lauren still wants to freeze her embryos, and Carol thinks people who’ve gone through something like this can be fierce protectors of their own kids.

Josh welcomes Carol back and shares the news that Alison testified on her behalf. Alison told the board Carol saved her life. Also, it turns out Alison wasn’t the one who reported her in the first place.

Oliver helps Muriel box up her office and thanks her for sticking around in his life, especially when his dad made it so difficult. He thinks it’ll be nice to have her as his mom, not his boss.

Oliver’s voiceover suggests it’s hard to predict what will break a person. “Sometimes what breaks you has been lurking inside you all along, waiting to shatter your world,” says Oliver.

The episode ends with a flash-forward six months. Oliver’s at Hudson Oaks and Clinical Director Amelia Frederick informs him he’ll stay there for an observation period. She thinks even those who give care need care sometimes. Carol’s with him as he’s handed the paperwork to sign himself in. She believes it’s for the best.

‘Good Boy’ Review: An Oscar-Worthy Performance by a Very Good Boy

Good Dog Movie Review
Indy in Ben Leonberg’s ‘GOOD BOY’ (Photo Courtesy of Ben Leonberg – An
Independent Film Company and Shudder Release)

Since the early 2000s, movies about ghosts have been a bit stale. Even when they’re good, as with The Conjuring or Insidious, they’re almost as played out as zombies. Until this year. Earlier this year, we got Presence, a ghost story from the ghost’s point of view. Well, now Good Boy is here to one-up it. Good Boy is a ghost movie from the point of view of the faithful canine companion.

Good Boy is about a dog named Indy (played by himself) who is brought to an old cabin in the woods by his owner, Todd (Shane Jensen). The cabin belonged to Todd’s Grandfather (Lerry Fessenden), and it comes with a history of ghosts, a fact which Indy is sensitive to. But the ghosts are not the only threats in the cabin. Todd has a few demons of his own that Indy must deal with as well.

Right off the bat, let’s spoil the one thing about Good Boy that needs to be spoiled. Indy doesn’t die. The movie is equal parts horrifying and heartbreaking, but Indy makes it the whole way through to the end.

Now that that’s out of the way, Good Boy was directed by Ben Leonberg from a script he co-wrote along with Alex Cannon. It’s Leonberg’s first feature, and it was clearly a passion project for the young filmmaker. Indy is his dog, and it just seems as if he wants to show off what a good boy his good boy is in Good Boy.

The concept that Leonberg cooked up to showcase his pup is sound, even solid. It’s said that animals, particularly pets, are more attuned to paranormal activity and supernatural presences, so the fact that Indy would react as he does to the haunting makes a lot of sense. Good Boy is not shown through Indy’s eyes so much as the camera follows him around as he explores and figures out what’s going on around him. Which is better, because Indy is one cute dog, and we want to see his furry face.

Good Boy is not just a ghost story. It’s a human story as well. Todd is dealing with more than just the ghosts of Grandpa’s old house, and Indy, like most dogs, absolutely loves his human. He wants to both protect and comfort Todd, even when Todd doesn’t want to be protected and comforted. Indy deals with both internal and external issues, fights enemies both foreign and domestic. And the audience is along for the ride.

And by the way, Indy is not just a pretty face. He is amazing in Good Boy. I have always said (and I’m saying it again) that there should be an Oscar for Best Animal Performance, and right now, Indy would be the favorite. The amount of emotion demonstrated by this dog is incredible. And he is basically in every single scene of the movie, so he’s the anchor. In fact, the humans’ faces are never even seen clearly, always obscured in shadow or just out of frame. This is Indy’s movie, and he’s up for the task. He gets the audience not only on his side but actively rooting for him. Heck, even if there’s not an Animal Performance category, let’s nominate Indy for Best Actor in general.

Of course, Good Boy is a gimmick movie, but it’s a gimmick movie that works. And the movie knows it’s a gimmick. Leonberg keeps it at the perfect running time (73 minutes) to keep the gimmick fresh without letting it overstay its welcome. Any longer, it would start repeating itself and would get stale. One of the best things about Good Boy is that it knows when to get out.

Overall, Good Boy is a breath of fresh air. It may use typical ghost movie tropes, but its approach is fresh and unique, so even the old spooky stuff is new again. It’s a welcome addition to the ghost movie subgenre. And maybe, just maybe, it will lead to more movies with talented animal leads in the future. Maybe even enough to get our Oscar category.
