VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race tops the list of 2021 Critics Choice Real TV Awards nominees, scoring five nominations. The critically acclaimed series will be competing in the Best Competition Series, Best Ensemble Cast In An Unscripted Series, Best Show Host, Male Star of the Year, and Female Star of the Year categories.
Netflix led all networks with 22 nominations followed by HBO/HBO Max with 14. Food Network/Food Network Kitchen and VH1 earned six nominations, with National Geographic/Nat Geo WILD and Discovery/discovery+ picking up five.
The 3rd annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, presented by the Critics Choice Association* and NPACT, recognize “excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.” The 2021 awards winners will be announced on Monday, June 21st.
“As the number of platforms continues to grow, the quality of unscripted television programming has skyrocketed, and we are thrilled to be able to recognize so much great work, especially at the end of a year when this content was needed more than ever,” stated Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin. “We are looking forward to celebrating this year’s winners, and our most deserving Impact Award honoree Alex Trebek, later this month.”
Alex Trebek passed away on November 8, 2020 after a nearly two year battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Trebek hosted Jeopardy! for 37 seasons and earned seven Outstanding Game Show Host Emmy Awards. The CCA and NPACT chose to honor Alex Trebek posthumously with the Impact Award given in recognition of an individual’s “career excellence and the positive impact they have made on the world of nonfiction content.”
Per CCA and NPACT: “Mr. Trebek and his legacy epitomize what the Impact Award was created to honor. His longstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence, his continual encouragement of curiosity, and his unfailing charm made Mr. Trebek one of television’s most respected and beloved figures. He was an inspiration to the nonfiction community that selected him for this award, and to the vast audience that welcomed him into their daily lives.”
