Olivia Rodrigo tops the list of 2021 American Music Awards nominees, picking up seven nominations including Artist of the Year and New Artist of The Year. This year’s AMAs mark Rodrigo’s first time as a nominee, with five-time AMA winner The Weeknd following close behind the newbie with six nominations.
Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, and first-time nominee Giveon each picked up five nominations. Ariana Grande and Drake earned four nominations, with BTS, Cardi B, Chris Brown, Chris Stapleton, Dua Lipa, Gabby Barrett, H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan, Kali Uchis, Maluma, Megan Thee Stallion, Pop Smoke, Silk Sonic, SZA, and Taylor Swift earning three.
Controversial artist Morgan Wallen picked up two nominations, and MRC Live & Alternative issued the following statement on how they’re handling his involvement:
“Unique among awards shows, American Music Awards (AMA) nominees are determined by performance on the Billboard Charts and are not chosen by a voting committee or membership organization. AMA nominees are based on key fan interactions with music (including streaming, album sales, song sales, radio airplay, social engagement), tracked by Billboard and its data partner MRC Data. The AMA winners are voted entirely by fans.
Morgan Wallen is a nominee this year based on charting. As his conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting).
We plan to evaluate his progress in doing meaningful work as an ally to the Black community and will consider his participation in future shows.”
This year’s awards show will air live on Sunday, November 21st beginning at 8pm ET on ABC. (Tape-delayed on the West Coast.) Fans can now vote for their favorites to win by searching TikTok for “AMAs.”
