Alexander Skarsgard and Florence Pugh Talk ‘The Little Drummer Girl’ Miniseries and Their Characters

AMC just announced the November premiere of their John le Carre miniseries The Little Drummer Girl. Following up their acclaimed presentation of The Night Manager, The Little Drummer Girl stars Alexander Skarsgard as Becker, a handsome stranger who romances a young British actress named Charlie (Florence Pugh) and they live happily ever after.

No, this is John le Carre. Becker is actually recruiting Charlie to help him defeat the leader of a terrorist group. That kind of relationship with ulterior motives gives Skarsgard a lot to play.

“His job is to recruit this talented young actress and then create a fiction within the fiction and recreate a love story,” Skarsgard said. “That was quite exciting to explore because they’re very much in love in the fiction of it from Day 1 and when they started this adventure and they go through Greece. The first date is at the Acropolis in like the most beautiful, romantic setting ever. As they get to know each other, you blur that line or it kind of disappears almost between what’s fiction and what’s reality and how professional is Becker? When do you see cracks in his veneer? When does he show who he really is or how he really feels? And I really enjoyed exploring that.”

For a guy like Becker, even letting down his guard could be a strategic play.

“There were moments where Charlie might think that she sees a crack and the audience might think that, oh, this is Becker coming out,” Alexander Skarsgard continued. “He’s not playing the character anymore. He can’t hold back. These are real feelings. But that might necessarily not be the case. That could also be him manipulating her ’cause that could potentially be a way of drawing her even closer in because if she feels or senses his humanity, she would follow him even more closely. And that’s what he wants. So that game, that mind game, was quite fun to play.”

Pugh credited Skarsgard with embodying the layered role of Becker while she was more singularly innocent as Charlie.

“I think he had a harder job than I did to do that because you were actually also embodying an actual character on the show, which was tricky, right?” she said. “I didn’t have to pretend to be anyone. I was just acting as Charlie.”

When Becker starts to coach Charlie in the spy game, it gets even trickier.

“Becker keeps saying, ‘Be yourself, be yourself,’” Skarsgard said. “As he’s coaching her and telling her like about Michel, this character that he’s pretending to be, she learns a lot and grows more confident. And then at a certain point, you have to kind of set off and then really believe in what you’re doing. And then it gets complicated because then the question is like, do you actually believe in the cause that you’re pretending to fight for? Which side are you on? Which side are you on?”

After her powerful performance in Lady Macbeth, Florence Pugh seems a natural for the role of Charlie. But the modest actor wasn’t sure she would get the role.

“When this was kind of being spoken about roughly this time last year, my film Lady Macbeth had just come out here,” Pugh said. “And it was kind of one of those films where some people had seen it and some people hadn’t. I was still very much under the radar and I still think I kind of am because lots of the things that I’ve done haven’t come out yet. And so when this project came up and it was in conversation, there was this big kind of whisper around town of who was gonna be in it. The Night Manager was so big. And the news of Little Drummer Girl happening was already so big. So automatically I knew that I probably didn’t quite have a chance and that was absolutely fine. And then director Park [Chan-wook] came onboard. Within about a weekend, I got an offer which was totally barmy and completely surreal.”

The Little Drummer Girl was previously made into a film starring Diane Keaton as Charlie.

“I did watch it,” Pugh said. “I think I’d heard so much about the film before I even really read the script, and so I read the script and I read the book and I watched the film. I don’t think anyone was trying to recreate that again, I think, when I spoke to director Park. He’s got such a fresh mind. He’s completely original and I didn’t really want to do any copying. I don’t think it’s any actor’s dream to copy anyone’s performance. You can take it in and grow from it, but I didn’t want to copy.”

The Little Drummer Girl filmed all over Europe on location.

“I will say that the first thing I do whenever I read through a script is realize how many of the places you probably won’t film in because when it’s written down, it’s probably just an amazing idea,” Pugh said. “Then actually when you come to filming it, it’s probably not gonna happen. But I remember going over this scene whenever there was a new draft of the Acropolis scene. And then finally like three weeks before we filmed it, I asked someone, ‘Are we actually filming in the Acropolis?’ They were like, ‘Yeah, no, no, we are actually doing it.’ And I couldn’t believe it. And then, of course, come the night when we are probably only 40 people up on the Acropolis filming for a whole evening and no film crew had been up there before at night. Alex and I just had a camera in our face as we just reacted to walking around the Acropolis at night. And that was utterly incredible.”

The three night The Little Drummer Girl event series begins November 19, 2018 on AMC.

‘The Innocents’ – Sorcha Groundsell Exclusive Interview

The Innocents star Sorcha Groundsell

Netflix’s new series The Innocents is about shapeshifters who can take the form of anyone else. That provides for a lot of drama and plot twists, but really The Innocents is a love story.

Harry (Percelle Ascott) and June (Sorcha Groundsell) are in love, and they run away together. When June discovers her powers, that gives them an advantage but also gets them into more trouble.

Showbiz Junkies spoke with Groundsell after The Innocents panel for the TCA. The Scottish actress stars in the eight episodes of The Innocents’ first season, now streaming on Netflix.

Do you see this as a big breakout role? Have you thought about what it means to be involved in a Netflix series?

Sorcha Groundsell: “For me personally, I tried not to think about that too much. I would have gone insane and panicked I think if I had thought about that. I think for me it was very useful to just do the work and try and do the best job that you can. Whatever comes from it is great. I’m trying not to take that side too seriously. The job is the time that you work on it. This stuff is just extra.”

Are you a hopeless romantic in real life?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I’m a hopeless romantic but I’m also Scottish so I’m quite cynical. I think it’s balance of the two.”

Was it difficult for you to get your mind around the shapeshifter mythology?

Sorcha Groundsell: “It was but I must say that our writers, Simon [Duric] and Hania [Elkington], were so amazingly open with us and really were there to answer whatever questions we had. So I think it was very helpful for us to go through and work out the details and the ins and outs of the mythology, but also of the physicality of shapeshifting. It was quite a complex thing because when you’re shooting out of sequence, it’s like who’s who at this point? Who have they shifted into and where are they at this point? So it was good to check in with everybody to just make sure we were all at the same point.”

How do you hand off to another actor when your character has shape shifted, and then come back after all the things they performed?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I tried as much as I could to see the rushes of it, if I wasn’t there on the day, to see their scenes. A lot of the time, because the reflection that you see in the mirror of all of these people that you shift into, it’s the initial person so I was on set for a lot of the actual shooting. We always approach the direction of it by running the scene with Harry and June first to get that tone. Then the other actor will step in and do their thing. Obviously it’s their performance so it will be slightly different, but all of them were, from my experience, so fantastic and really nailed the nature of a 16-year-old girl, which for a big burly Viking-type guy, that’s not easy.”

Do you get possessive over your character?

Sorcha Groundsell: “No. To be honest, it was like an acting class for me. The performances were so incredible, it was quite fun to just sit back and think, ‘Oh, that’s how they see June. Right.’ I never felt like my character was being taken away from me at all.”

The Innocents stars Sorcha Groundsell and Percelle Ascott

Are you eager to find out where The Innocents goes in future seasons?

Sorcha Groundsell: “Absolutely. At this point, none of us know anything about it. It’s all very much up in the air. Obviously, we’re actors so no one tells us anything but yes, fingers crossed, that would be fantastic. But, also, we’re just very glad to be focused on this part. We’re not taking anything for (granted).”

Did you start hearing from fans when the trailer was released?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I haven’t really paid attention to it just because I will stress out about it. From what I’ve heard, everyone seems to be quite positive about it.”

Where do you expect to be when it premieres?

Sorcha Groundsell: “Probably in Scotland with my parents. I don’t know how I’m going to watch it or if I will. I might watch it all in one go.”

Do you do social media and all the other things that come with an acting career in 2018?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I have it but I definitely haven’t had the briefing of an actual social media. Some people are so good at it, it’s amazing. It kind of confuses me a little bit.”

What is your background? Did you study acting?

Sorcha Groundsell: “Not really. I’m from Scotland. I took acting classes in Glasgow when I was a teenager but no, I haven’t been to drama school. This has been my training.”

What scene did you audition with?

Sorcha Groundsell: “Oh goodness me. I think there were quite a few. One of them was in the car in the first episode, one of the car scenes. Most of it was Harry and June scenes.”

Was it a long process to win the role?

Sorcha Groundsell: “Kind of. It was longer for Percy. I auditioned for it and then didn’t hear back for like four months, came in for a chemistry read and then got the part basically the next day. It was long but also very fast at the same time. Then we were in pre-production meetings the week after. It was quite a whirlwind.”

Have you lined anything up after The Innocents?

Sorcha Groundsell: “No, I’m just sort of enjoying some time off at the moment, really. It was such an intense shooting process that I’m enjoying being able to sleep normally for a change.”

Have you ever had a role this intense before?

Sorcha Groundsell: “No. No, but also I’ve never had a job that lasted as long. There’s something very different about being in every day for seven months. It’s a real challenge but it’s a challenge that every actor wants.”

What would be your dream role to play one day?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I’m a bit of a theater buff so I feel like Lady Macbeth is the goal.”

You haven’t done it in any school productions before?

Sorcha Groundsell: “No, I didn’t really do drama at school. My school didn’t really have drama.”

Do you alternate between theater and screen?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I would like to. I haven’t done a huge amount of theater at all but I would very much like to.”

What is your life like in England?

Sorcha Groundsell: “I live in London. It’s just pretty normal. This is very, very distant to my regular life.”

‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Season 4 Episode 11: “The Code”

Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 11

AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead season four episode 10 spent the entire hour focusing on Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Charlie (Alexa Nisenson). By the end of episode 10, Alicia and Charlie had formed an uneasy alliance despite the fact Alicia holds Charlie responsible for the deaths of her mom, her brother, and the innocent people attempting to establish a new community at the stadium.

Season four episode 11 “The Code” concentrates on Morgan’s journey and introduces four new characters. The episode begins with Morgan (Lennie James) calling out for Alicia as the storm rages. He finds a moving truck and takes shelter in the back. Inside is a box with a note that reads: “Take what you need. Leave what you don’t. See you further up the road.”

Morgan looks through the box and finds a knife, a MRE, and a protein bar. He settles in to wait out the storm.

The wind has stopped howling when he wakes the following morning with a walker right outside the truck’s rear doors. Dispatching him quickly, he emerges to find the sky is clear and that somehow he’s made it to The Flip-Flop Truck Stop in Mississippi. No one answers when he calls out inside the truck stop, but there’s a fresh pot of coffee and the lights are working. There’s also a fair amount of supplies on the shelves.

A woman speaks over the radio, asking after someone named Polar Bear. Morgan explains to the friendly voice that he must have accidentally hitched a ride in the back of a semi. She tells him to take what he needs and leave what he doesn’t. Morgan wants more information, but she stops communicating after issuing those instructions.

Morgan takes the supplies he needs, including a walkie-talkie, water, and a thermos of hot coffee. He’s pleasantly surprised the water works and even enjoys a bathroom break until his time on the toilet’s interrupted by a stranger.

It turns out the man’s in a wheelchair and he’s angry Morgan used the handicap stall. Morgan, hands raised since the stranger’s got a shotgun, explains he always thought the handicap stall seemed like a little apartment.

The man, who it turns out is named Wendell (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell), questions him about why he felt free to take items, and Morgan explains the woman on the radio told him it was okay. Just then Sarah (Mo Collins) enters the truck stop and she apologizes for her brother’s behavior.

They take him around back and show him the trucks packed with supplies. They explain they’re just continuing the work they did before the zombie apocalypse. They travel around, leaving supplies where they’re needed. They have water and power, and Morgan seems stunned to learn this is their current mission in life.

When they ask his plans, he says he’s heading back east to Virginia to be with his friends who are busy creating a safe community. Morgan didn’t realize he escaped a hurricane, and he quickly figures out he left Alicia and the others in danger. The helpful strangers believe his friends are probably dead, and Wendell reveals he just lost his beloved Bichon Frise. They can’t drive him back because their truck won’t make it, but they load him up with supplies in a car that still runs and has gas.

They’re determined to help others and explain they live by the code: “Keep on truckin’.” (These people are too good to be true, but Morgan doesn’t see that.)

On Morgan’s journey back to Alicia he finds one of the special “Take what you need…” boxes and smiles. A little further down the road Morgan suddenly stops his trip back to Alicia when the voices in his head return. He radios Sarah and Wendell and asks if they can take him to Virginia because the bridge back to his friends is out. (It’s not.)

Morgan makes it back to the truck stop but Wendell and Sarah aren’t back from finishing up a supply drop. Sarah calls Morgan “MoMo” and says she’s sorry he wasn’t able to help his friends.

Morgan heads out and waits for them at the new rendezvous point. He sees a person in the distance being chased by walkers and gets out to help. The zombie bait has his hands tied behind his back and a burlap bag over his head as he tries to stay away from becoming zombie chow. He stumbles and the walkers are close to biting him when Morgan takes them all out and saves the day.

It turns out the man’s name is Jim (Aaron Stanford) and he was kidnapped because they wanted his recipe for brewing beer. They hit the road and Jim explains he’s been on his own, growing hops and brewing beer. He’s planning for the future and believes at some point everyone will want beer. Morgan confesses he doesn’t think Jim’s nuts because he’s heading someplace where people are also planning for the future.

They stop at Sarah and Wendell’s semi and it turns out they’re the ones who kidnapped Jim. (Of course they are.) Sarah and Wendell admit they stole the truck from the guy who was leaving the supply boxes, but they didn’t kill him. Instead, they just dumped him in Texas.

Morgan and Jim, who was truly kidnapped just for his beer recipes, are tied up and placed in the back of the truck. Morgan refuses to tell Sarah and Wendell anything else about the Virginia community, so they decide to just hit the road that direction believing Morgan will eventually talk.

While they’re in the back of the truck unable to leave, Jim examines the beer supplies Sarah stole from him. He’s actually fine with throwing in with them if it means he can sell his beer to the Virginia community. Morgan can’t believe this guy would be willing to work with his kidnappers and swears he’s not taking anyone near his friends in Virginia.

Jim is certain history was built on beer which is the staff of life. It changed the course of history, making people settle to grow its ingredients. He’s sure Morgan’s people need beer.

The truck comes to a sudden stop on a bridge because it’s too heavy for the road. Jim’s beer ingredients need to be tossed, but Morgan refuses to help or reveal any more details about Virginia. Jim, on the other hand, becomes Sarah and Wendell’s new best friend by forging a deal.

As they talk, Morgan falls down the slope and lands just feet from a dozen or so walkers. He makes it to the top of a car, hands still tied behind his back. The walkers gather around, reaching for him as he stands on the roof. Sarah refuses to help until he gives her the location of the Virginia group, and Morgan has no choice but to finally disclose the location.

Sarah, Wendell, and Jim debate who’s going to help Morgan. Turns out Jim can’t because he’s never killed walkers. Wendell can’t, given he’s in a wheelchair. Sarah refuses, and then informs Morgan they’re just leaving him there to fend for himself. She also reveals they know he was lying about the bridge being out.

Night falls and Morgan’s still trapped on the roof of the car surrounded by walkers. He seems to have come to a decision and uses the radio to tell Sarah and Wendell they don’t have to do this. He also admits he’s a coward and that’s why he didn’t finish looking for his friends after the hurricane. He thought he’d make things worse if he did, and now he asks for Sarah ato come back so he can do the right thing.

They don’t reply and Morgan begins kicking at the walkers. They grab for his boots and continue to reach for their trapped meal. He makes a break for it, leaping off the roof and onto the side of the embankment. He sees a scattering of supplies from one of the boxes and is able to grab a knife, free his hands, and take out a few walkers. He uses a mile marker to finish killing others so he can make his escape.

Back up on the road, he radios Sarah and Wendell and tells them they couldn’t be more wrong. The boxes they thought were just rotting in the road not doing anybody any good are indeed useful.

Morgan continues to walk down the middle of the road. Sarah and Wendell are waiting for him on his trip, having learned the exit he told them to take in Virginia does not exist. Morgan says if they want to go to Virginia, then they’ll have to pick up his other friends first. If not, he’ll just keep on walking.

The reluctant traveling companions hit the road, dropping off boxes along the way. Jim even places a bottle of beer in one as they continue their trip.

Morgan uses the walkie-talkie in hopes of connecting with the person who owns the truck. He tells him they’ll meet up on the road in Texas, but Morgan’s actually unknowingly communicating with a mysterious woman (Tonya Pinkins) who writes “Take what you need, leave what you don’t” across the face of a walker while explaining they’re hitting the road for Texas.

HBO’s released the first short trailer for My Dinner with Herve, based on a true story. The film stars Game of ThronesPeter Dinklage as actor Hervé Villechaize, the beloved star of the long-running primetime series Fantasy Island.

In addition to releasing the 30-second trailer, HBO’s confirmed the film will premiere on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 8pm ET/PT.

Fifty Shades of Grey‘s Jamie Dornan co-stars as journalist Danny Tate. The cast also includes Mireille Enos (World War Z, The Catch) as Hervé’s longtime girlfriend, Kathy Self; Harriet Walter (Babel, Atonement) as Danny’s newspaper editor, Fiona Baskin; and Oona Chaplin (Taboo, The Longest Ride) as Danny’s girlfriend, Katie Nielson. As a journalist, writer/director Gervasi conducted an interview with Hervé Villechaize not long before he committed suicide and that interview provides the basis for the film. In an interview with the New York Times, Dinklage explained, “After he killed himself, Sacha realized Hervé interview was a suicide note.”

Gervasi’s behind the scenes team includes director of photography Maryse Alberti, editor Carol Littleton, production designer Jeremy Reed, and costume designer Julie Weiss, with music by David Norland.

The Plot: Inspired by a real story, My Dinner with Herve explores the unlikely friendship between struggling journalist Danny Tate (Dornan) and Hervé Villechaize (Dinklage), the world’s most famous knife-wielding French dwarf actor, as it unfolds over one wild night in LA – an encounter that will have life-changing consequences for both.

Disney and Marvel have released the theme song to Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors. Descendants star Dove Cameron performs the single titled “Born Ready” which will be featured in the animated film set to premiere on Disney Channel and Disney XD on Sunday, September 30, 2018.

“Ready, set
Time to be a fighter
Don’t look down Keep on climbing higher
Be yourself, ’cause heroes shine in different ways
And when your voice can’t make a sound
Just know we hear you all around
Don’t need to fit into the crowd
To be a force of nature
We’re gonna be, we’re gonna be, we’re gonna be the best
They’re gonna see, they’re gonna see that we were born for this”

The single was written by Doug Rockwell and Tova Litvin.

“When we heard ‘Born Ready’ for the first time, it gave our animation team chills,” stated Cort Lane, Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Animation & Family Entertainment. “It had all the swagger, friendship and heroic aspirations of the Marvel Rising characters. Dove’s fierceness and talent embodies everything the song is about, and her amazing performance made ‘Born Ready’ something very special.”

The Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors voice cast includes Chloe Bennet as Quake, Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Kathreen Khavari as Ms. Marvel, Kamil McFadden as Patriot, Tyler Posey as Inferno, BooBoo Stewart as Exile, Cierra Ramirez as America Chavez, Kim Raver as Captain Marvel, Ming-Na Wen as Hala, and Dee Bradley Baker as Tippy Toe & Lockjaw. Dove Cameron provides the voice of Ghost-Spider, “a free-spirited teen who finds her calling to be a Super Hero after being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining spider-like powers.”

Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley, Cort Lane, and Eric Radomski serve as executive producers, with Stan Lee, Sana Amanat, and Marsha Griffin co-executive producing.

The Plot: Marvel Rising is the next generation of Marvel heroes for the next generation of Marvel fans. In the animated film, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, powered teens Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Quake, Patriot, America Chavez, and Inferno join forces as an unlikely, but formidable crew of aspiring heroes. When a threat no one could have expected bears down on the Marvel Universe, this ragtag, untrained band of teens have no choice but to rise together and prove to the world that sometimes the difference between a “hero” and “misfit” is just in the name.

‘Ben is Back’ Teaser Trailer: Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges Star in the 2018 Drama

The first official teaser trailer for Ben is Back is only 55 seconds long and doesn’t provide much in the way of details about the dramatic film. It does, however, show Ben Burns (played by Lucas Hedges) returning home much to the surprise of his mother (played by Julia Roberts).

In addition to Oscar winner Julia Roberts (Best Actress in a Leading Role, Erin Brockovich) and Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Manchester by the Sea), the cast includes Emmy Award winner Courtney B. Vance (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie, American Crime Story), and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies).

Oscar nominee Peter Hedges (Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay, About a Boy) wrote and directed the drama. Hedges also produced along with Nina Jacobson, Teddy Schwarzman, and Brad Simpson. Jane Nerlinger Evans, Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, Michael Heimler, Mickey Liddell, Pete Shilaimon, Daniel Steinman, and Ben Stillman executive produced.

The behind the scenes team includes director of photography Stuart Dryburgh and editor Ian Blume, with music by Dickon Hinchliffe.

LD Entertainment, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have set a December 7, 2018 theatrical release date.

The Plot: Ben Is Back is a drama that follows the charming, yet troubled, Ben Burns (Hedges) who returns home to his unsuspecting family one fateful Christmas Eve. Ben’s wary mother, Holly Burns (Roberts) welcomes her beloved son’s return, but soon learns that he is still very much in harm’s way. During the 24-hours that may change their lives forever, Holly must do everything in her power to avoid the family’s downfall.

Ben is Back shows us how far we will go to protect the ones we love. Courtney B. Vance plays Roberts’ husband and stepfather to Hedges. His philosophy on how to handle her son’s return puts him at direct odds with his wife.
