Shiva Negar, Michael Keaton, Neg Adamson and Dylan O’Brien in ‘American Assassin.’
“What is it you think we do here?” asks Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). “Kill people who need to be killed,” answers Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) in the action film based on the number one best-selling novel, American Assassin.
After the tragic death of his fiancée at the hands of terrorists, Mitch Rapp makes it his mission to pose as a radical, up-and-coming terrorist to try to infiltrate the cell of the terrorists who killed her. Rapp’s actions are picked up by the CIA and he’s recruited by Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to train with Cold War Navy Seal Stan Hurley to become a Black Ops agent (aka an assassin). A few months later when 15 kilos of plutonium goes missing, Kennedy assigns Hurley and Rapp to investigate who took it and why. Their only lead is an ex-operative of Hurley’s known as Ghost (Taylor Kitsch) who seems to be interested in starting a world war in the Middle East.
Action-packed and with a scene-stealing performance by Michael Keaton, American Assassin is not as original, intense, or as stylish as the Bourne films but is an effective, exciting, and satisfying adventure that’s sure to kick off production on a new film franchise. Dylan O’Brien is a surprising choice to portray Mitch Rapp whose tragic past losses of loved ones has turned the once happy and fairly normal young man into a determined, avenging assassin. O’Brien is physically up for the fights and stunts in the film, but sadly he portrays Rapp as a one-dimensional rage-filled killer who the audience never has a chance to connect with and root for. Hopefully, O’Brien will have the opportunity to flesh out the character in future installments.
Michael Keaton is perfectly cast as the tough, hard-as-nails ex-Navy Seal Hurley who becomes Rapp’s mentor and trainer. Keaton shines in every scene, particularly the early ones as he trains Rapp, along with a handful of other recruits, on what it takes to become a cold and lethal killer devoid of emotion and always putting the mission first. The best scenes in the film are at the assassin training camp. Hurley initially doesn’t believe Rapp has what it takes to be a Black Ops agent and then eventually realizes he’s perfect for the job, and through it all Keaton has solid chemistry with O’Brien. It’s Keaton’s performance that raises the film up to an above average action movie.
One of the biggest weaknesses of the film is in the script, especially the dialogue. It lacks the smart vernacular familiar in spy and covert films, including the Jason Bourne and James Bond movies, and falls back on using too much foul and coarse language. Another disappointing element is the lack of any original or jaw-dropping action scenes. The action scenes are too reminiscent of bigger and bolder action scenes in better movies.
Still, with Keaton’s performance and a decent plot, American Assassin is a crowd-pleasing action-adventure film which should entertain fans of the genre.

ABC’s Once Upon a Time season seven leaves Storybrooke behind, with Regina, Gold, and Hook out in the real world among people who don’t believe in magic. Sitting down at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con to discuss the upcoming season, executive producers Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis, and David H. Goodman provided details on the new setting, the new characters, and what fans can expect from a much different Once Upon a Time when it premieres on October 6, 2017.
What can fans look forward to with season seven?
Adam Horowitz: “I don’t think we’d ever presume to promise you’re going to like anything we do. We hope you do. I think what we’d say to them is we love these characters as much or more than you do, so we treat this very seriously. We know how emotionally attached people become to characters, especially after six years, and that’s how we feel. We haven’t taken anything lightly. We’re going to keep the legacy of the show and the history of these characters alive, and that’s going to be a really important part of the show as we move forward with this new chapter.”
When you were in the writers’ room discussing what season seven was going to be like, did it feel like you were getting a facelift or a refresh? How does that feel?
Edward Kitsis: “It felt like a really nice shot of Botox. I will say this: this was an idea we’ve had for a few years, but when we sat down to write it last year I would say that we felt re-inspired. We felt reinvigorated because we were free from the six years of mythology and things we did before, and we could start going back to what we really loved which is, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we did this? We’ve never shown this. What’s this person’s backstory?’
For us, it was great because we got to end the show the way we wanted last year, and we got to continue to have fun telling these stories in new worlds with the characters moving forward.”
David H. Goodman: “And it’s also the introduction of all the stuff that’s new that’s giving a wonderful shot in the arm to some of the stuff that was old and that we’ve been doing for seasons one through six. It’s giving us a new chance to tell new stories with these characters that everyone has loved for so long. It’s kind of had this ability of bringing what’s new and then making what’s old new again, which is been really, really neat.”
What details can you tease us with on season seven?
Edward Kitsis: “Well, I think the details we can tease is Henry leaves home and he’s in a new book. I think the relationship between him and Cinderella I would say is in the vein of the epic romance that Snow and Charming had. I would say that Regina is in a new chapter of her life. I would say that we can tease that we’re going to see Tiana. We are going to meet a new Alice in Wonderland. And I think one of the things I’m really excited about is we’re leaving Storybrooke and going to Hyperion Heights so we’re going from a small town to the big city. For us, the original idea of the show was fairy tales in the real world so for us it’s fun to go back to a place that doesn’t have magic, you know? So, it isn’t magic, magic all the time.”
Adam Horowitz: “Where Storybrooke was a small town that was just these fairy tale characters who were cursed and hidden away, Hyperion Heights is a part of Seattle. You have the original characters now mixed with the real world and real people who don’t have a magical background, who aren’t cursed. So, it’s a different vibe and we’re excited.”
Edward Kitsis: “And I would say that one of the things we can tease is Hyperion Heights, like many neighborhoods, is being gentrified by Lady Tremaine who is an evil developer. I think that in her mind if she pushes the fairy tale people out, then they can’t find each other, because maybe that was one of the weaknesses of the first curse. If you keep everybody in the same place, after a while people are going to find each other and remember. If you spread them out and get rid of the neighborhood, then it’s a lot harder.”
Will this be like season one in that these characters don’t remember the last six years?
Adam Horowitz: “I would say without getting too specific about all the details, we’re not redoing season one. So, we’re sort of taking some of the ideas that are going to echo, but we’re going to be going in new directions with them. The rules that maybe you’ve been used to over the first six seasons might have some twists to them. There might be different things with different affects. This isn’t the same curse that we did in season one. These aren’t the same characters and it’s not being done for the same reason. So, we’re going to be hopefully surprising the audience in what our villains are doing. Unlike season one where we saw Regina cast the curse spell, we actually don’t see who casts the curse this year. So, that’s going to be something that you may not want to take for granted.”
Edward Kitsis: “She is Drizella. She is a wicked stepdaughter and she is awesome! Adelaide is so wickedly good in this performance.”
The name “Hyperion Heights” has some history to it.
Adam Horowitz: “It is a nod to Disney history and the Hyperion Studio where Disney was originally located. In fact, the building we write the show in is from that original Hyperion Studio which is the only building from that studio that was moved to the current Disney lot.”
Edward Kitsis: “It’s called the Shorts Building. It was literally brought over in two pieces from the original one. We always want to honor Disney.”
Fox’s Gotham returns to kick off season four on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT with an episode titled “Pax Penguina.” The upcoming season opens with Ed Nygma frozen and on display in Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge, and with Bruce Wayne moving closer to becoming Batman.
The season four cast includes Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins, Sean Pertwee as Alfred, Robin Lord Taylor as The Penguin, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma/the Riddler, Jessica Lucas as Tabitha Galavan, Chris Chalk as Lucius Fox, Drew Powell as Butch Gilzean/Solomon Grundy, Alexander Siddig as Ra’s Ah Ghul, and Crystal Reed as Sofia Falcone.
The guest cast includes Michael Buscemi as Merton, Larry Pine as Mayor Burke, Michael Maize as Grady, Charlie Tahan as Jonathan Crane, Anthony Carrigan as Zsasz, Damian Young as Warden Reed, and Maggie Geha as Ivy Pepper.
The Plot: Season four of Gotham will witness the emergence of the criminal landscape for which Gotham City is best known, with Jim Gordon (McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Logue) at the forefront of the fight against the most depraved and unhinged villains. While Gotham City fights for normalcy, a new hero will rise, as Bruce Wayne (Mazouz) begins to assume responsibility for the city’s well-being.
The “Pax Penguina” Plot: Gordon fears Jonathan Crane (Tahan) is still alive and back in Gotham, when The Scarecrow’s signature MO is used in a series of robberies. Meanwhile, Penguin’s “licensing” of crime in the city backfires during the grand opening of his new Iceberg Lounge. Also, in the aftermath of his encounter with Ra’s Al Ghul, Bruce begins his vigilante watch in the all-new “A Dark Knight: Pax Penguina” season premiere episode of Gotham.
Theo Rossi has signed on to the lead role in Verdi Productions’ Vault. Rossi, best known for his role as Juice in Sons of Anarchy, will play Robert “Deuce” Dussault in the film based on true events. Tom DeNucci (Army of the Damned) is directing from a script he co-wrote with B. Dolan. Chad Verdi, Michelle Verdi, Nick Koskoff, and Matthew Weiss are producing, with Nicholas Carmona, Dawn Vanzant and Tanja Lynch executive producing.
Filming is expected to begin in April 2018 in Rhode Island.
In addition to Sons of Anarchy, Theo Rossi’s credits include Luke Cage, When the Bough Breaks, Lowriders, Meth Head, Alcatraz, Red Sands, Kill Theory, Cloverfield, and Grey’s Anatomy. He recently finished filming Ghosts of War with Brenton Thwaites, Kyle Gallner, and Skylar Astin.
“Landing Theo as our lead is huge for this project. My director Tom DeNucci and producing partner Nick Koskoff worked very hard to lock Theo in. Theo, Nick and I worked together on Bad Hurt, so there’s a lot of good chemistry between us already,” said Chad Verdi.
The Plot:Vault is inspired by true events and tells the story of a group of small-time criminals, who in 1975, attempt to pull off the biggest heist in American history; stealing more than $30 million from the mafia in the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island.
Hot off its festival screenings and a Golden Lion win at the Venice Film Festival, Fox Searchlight has released a restricted trailer for The Shape of Water. Written, directed, and produced by Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water currently stands at 98% fresh (39 positive, 1 negative reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast includes Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones. Jones once again transforms into creature mode to play the aquatic man at the heart of the drama. Jones’ previously collaborations with Guillermo del Toro include Crimson Peak, Hellboy, and Pan’s Labyrinth.
Fox Searchlight has set a December 8, 2017 theatrical release.
The Plot: From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes The Shape of Water – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.
TriStar Pictures has unveiled a new trailer and poster for the dramatic film, All the Money in the World, directed by Ridley Scott. David Scarpa adapted John Pearson’s book for the screen, and Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Quentin Curtis, Chris Clark, Ridley Scott, Mark Huffam, and director Scott produced. The studio’s official description of the plot makes a point of pointing out the film is inspired by historical events and that “some scenes, characters and dialogue have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes.” The true story that inspired All the Money in the World was the kidnapping of Getty heir, John Paul Getty III, in 1973. Charlie Plummer plays the kidnapped heir and Kevin Spacey takes on the role of billionaire John Paul Getty. The cast also includes Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg, Romain Duris, and Timothy Hutton.
The Plot:All the Money in the World follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Spacey) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.
