Fox’s The Gifted is set in the X-Men world and stars Stephen Moyer (‘Reed Strucker’), Amy Acker (‘Caitlin Strucker’), Sean Teale (‘Eclipse’/’Marcos Diaz’), Blair Redford (‘Thunderbird’/’John Proudstar’), Natalie Alyn Lind (‘Lauren Strucker’), Percy Hynes White (‘Andy Strucker’), Jamie Chung (‘Blink’/’Clarice Fong’ aka ‘Clarice Ferguson’), Coby Bell (‘Jace Turner’), and Emma Dumont (‘Polaris’/’Lorna Dane’). Fox brought the cast to the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con to promote season one of the comic book-inspired series, which is set to premiere on October 2, 2017, with Sean Teale and Blair Redford paired up for roundtable interviews.

Teale and Redford talked about their characters, the appeal of being a part of this X-Men world, and working with X-Men veteran, Bryan Singer.

Can you talk about the social themes that are being explored on the show?

Sean Teale: “People keep on asking about why X-Men is still relevant and why it deals with civil issues, and I think the reason why is because of its conception. That was the case. Magneto and Charles Xavier were made into Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and if that’s the way that this concept was conceived, then that’s going to emanate throughout the mythology later on. And so, in this show, we have that same thing with civil rights issues.

These people aren’t superheroes who don suits and fly magic jets and save the world, these are human beings that are persecuted for doing nothing other than being themselves which is mutants because they’ve just been bestowed this X-Gene they didn’t ask for. And so, the social issues that we’re dealing with exist on the planet already: persecution of the skin type that you have or your gender or your sexuality or your age, weight, height, anything. What nationality you are, how you speak, or if you have any disabilities.

That persecution is all relevant on our show because you don’t have a choice in those things. You don’t choose them. Maybe your weight you could choose…you could choose not to have that extra dessert. But, that’s what this show is dealing with is human beings persecuted for being nothing other than themselves and coming together and trying to fight for their rights as people. I think that’s quite relevant.”

Is the world of The Gifted similar to the world of Incorporated?

Sean Teale: “The world of Incorporated was quite frightening. It was set in the future and it was grounded and realistic as possible with the projections that they made, but quite sinister and quite dark. This does have some connections to that. There are trade-offs. Some people fall afoul of the system and others do not. That will always happen in every story. But that’s where the similarities would end, I guess, because I could go on for days and I ramble – as you’ve noticed. So, that’s really where it ends and this is very different, actually.”

What was it like working with Bryan Singer on the pilot?

Blair Redford: “That was incredible. Right off the bat when I heard he was attached you know you’re getting a pillar of the X-Men franchise helming the project. We felt like we were in great hands. His instincts are incredible. He’s an encyclopedia of X-Men knowledge.

What I found amazing working with him too is that as a director he’s always cutting and editing in his head. It’s an interesting process where his understanding of the franchise and of the powers and how they all work – he’s got such a strong grasp that he’ll be shooting something and what normally might take a discussion to figure out, he’s cut the scene in his head. He’s figured out, ‘That power doesn’t quite look this way,’ or ‘it won’t cut that way.’ He’s just a good leader when it comes to making this project. Obviously, that’s why he’s a part of it.”

What was the lure of the characters you’re playing? What got you excited about them?

Sean Teale: “What got me excited was the world because the characters are sort of very much…well, they not only live in this world but are derived from this world. They’re molded and sort of poked and prodded and manipulated by the world that they live in and the circumstances that they’re in. Because of this terrifying world and these dangerous scenarios, what’s really interesting is how these people are going to react. Not only do they have this thing that they don’t know whether they control yet, they live in a world where people resent that so do they resent themselves? Why wouldn’t you want to play someone that’s trying to do one thing, trying to do good in the world when the world is trying not to do good by them? And how far can those people go before they start to jeopardize what they believe in and it starts to tear away at the threads of who they are under duress? We’ve all seen people crack and change because of that, so it was really fun to have that dynamic happen.

I think Thunderbird and Polaris and Eclipse – you’ll see throughout the series that relationship does factor in. Thunderbird has a way of thinking and it’s in my opinion a good one. Polaris has another one and Eclipse…we all get torn between the two opposing factors and that sounded really fun to play because who doesn’t want to play in these extreme situations, ordinary people in these extraordinary circumstances? That’s really fun.”

Blair Redford: “What I was drawn to about Thunderbird, I didn’t even know who I was reading for when we first auditioned. They kept it a secret. What I was drawn to was Thunderbird is obviously this guy with superhuman strength, we’ve seen that portrayed a lot in different stories. But, he has this other power of foresight. He has heightened senses and was a tracker. It kind of made him a little more well-rounded.”

Sean Teale: “He’s not just a grunt.”

Blair Redford: “Yeah. And any character I look at I try to examine what their origin story is, what their history is. I thought with Thunderbird there’s so much to delve into. I mean, he’s got this Apache background, this tracker background, he’s ex-military…there’s a lot of stuff to go off of. His brother, Warpath, there’s a lot of deep stuff to delve into. That made it interesting for me.”

There’s another X-Men series out now, Legion. Will these two series complement each other?

Sean Teale: “From what I’ve seen of Legion, it’s a very unique show on its own. So, fortunately, there won’t be the problem of clashing because it’s quite hard to clash with something unless you’re similar to it. Legion is very much its own thing in the way it’s shot. The way that it’s sort of staged is very different to how ours is. You’d hope that they do sort of complement each other. I can’t tell for sure. But one thing is that they won’t clash. I can’t imagine someone watching Legion and going, ‘Well, there’s no way The Gifted can be watchable because this is.’ That would be quite worrying and it would be a shame. (Laughing) So, don’t do that, please! We hope they complement each other.”

How does the show relate to the existing X-Men movie universe? Is The Gifted in the same universe?

Blair Redford: “Matt Nix, our creator, has given a bit of information on that. I think what he alludes to a lot is that from Days of Future Past there are actual different timelines that have sprouted up. So, keep that in mind. We can exist on our own. There’s no direct connection at the moment to Logan or to the last X-Men film that was in theaters.”

Sean Teale: “We exist in that universe but with our own lineage, I guess. There will be things that are alluded to. You’ve got Thunderbird and Blink and Polaris so you know that we’re part of this world.”

Blair Redford: “And the X-Men and the Brotherhood existed in our story.”

It’s set in 2017?

Blair Redford: “Yes, it’s set in the present day.”

Animal Planet’s popular North Woods Law series returns to New Hampshire for the second season premiering on September 3, 2017. North Woods Law: New Hampshire will air on Sundays at 9pm ET/PT and will feature New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers as they protect and preserve the state’s natural resources. Season one aired in early 2017 and averaged 1+ million viewers, earning it the top spot among all freshman series debuting on Animal Planet over the past two years.

Steven Engel (Untying the Knot, American Treasures) and Ben Shank (Wild West Alaska, American Stuffers) serve as executive producers.

The Plot: New Hampshire is a premiere destination for outdoorsmen and women because of its wild and rugged landscape, making the work of Conservation Officers diverse and demanding. For the Conservation Officers of New Hampshire, no two days are alike. In this second season of North Woods Law, the officers rescue injured, ill and abandoned animals; risk their own lives searching for lost hikers in treacherous conditions; rush to the aid of riders injured in ATV accidents; and respond to cases in which decisions made lead to serious consequences, among other stories.

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Season 3: Dominic Purcell Interview on Mick’s Straight-Talking Ways

The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow star Dominic Purcell made his umpteenth trip to the San Diego Comic Con to promote the upcoming third season of the comic book-inspired series. During roundtable interviews, Purcell admitted he occasionally needs to step away from the crowds when it gets to be a bit overwhelming. However, even if attending a massive event like the Con brings on a small panic attack, Purcell loves being able to see the fans reactions to Legends of Tomorrow and being able to listen to what the fans have to say about his character, Mick Rory.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season three will premiere on October 10, 2017.

How will Mick be reacting to the group needing to fix time after they broke it in season two?

Dominic Purcell: “I don’t think Mick gives a sh*t about fixing time. I think Mick’s much more kind of interested in what he can steal and what he can get out for himself. What is interesting about Mick is that he is now starting to see the crew as his family in a very subliminal kind of way. It’s creeping up on him that he is starting to care for these people. And, the crew vice versa is starting to really trust that Mick is starting to come on board. I use the analogy that he has one foot in, one foot out now. Whereas last season it was two feet out and holding on by a finger.

But, you know, I think the show needs a character like Mick that breaks up, shakes up the seriousness of everything. He’s the bullsh*t filter, you know what I mean? I think that’s why people really respond to him. And the rest of the cast are turning into seasoned comedians as well, trying to copy my style.”

Mick does have a lot of humorous lines. Does he try to be funny?

Dominic Purcell: “No, he doesn’t try to be funny. That’s just him. He’s unfiltered; he’s uncensored. And when you come across people like that who just say it like it is, people laugh. They’re like, ‘F*ck, Mick, that’s pretty f*cking honest.’ And that’s funny. Honesty is funny in a day and age like this, you know?”

What’s been your favorite place to visit thus far on the show?

Dominic Purcell: “That’s a good question. I’ve been asked it before and I haven’t worked it out. I tell you a place that I think Mick would really excel is in a post-apocalyptic world, like Mad Max. I think he’d do very, very well there. I think that’s a world I’d like to explore.”

‘Jerry Before Seinfeld’ Offers Up a New Trailer for the Netflix Special

Netflix’s upcoming comedy special Jerry Before Seinfeld has just released a new trailer. The one-hour stand-up special starring Jerry Seinfeld is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix on September 19, 2017. Jerry Before Seinfeld is part of a deal Seinfeld struck with Netflix that includes new episodes of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee as well as two stand-up shows. In addition, the writer/actor/comedian will help develop new scripted and non-scripted comedies for Netflix.

“When I first started thinking about Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, the entire Netflix business model consisted of mailing out DVDs in envelopes. I love that we are now joining together, both at very different points,” stated Seinfeld when the deal was announced in August 2016. “I am also very excited to be working with Ted Sarandos at Netflix, a guy and a place that not only have the same enthusiasm for the art of stand up comedy as I do, but the most amazing technology platform to deliver it in a way that has never existed before. I am really quite charged up to be moving there.”

The Jerry Before Seinfeld Plot: In the hour-long special, Jerry Seinfeld returns to The Comic Strip in New York City for an intimate stand-up set at the club that helped launch his career. Interspersed with never-before-seen material — including a library of legal pads with every joke he’s written since 1975, childhood videos, and more — Jerry performs the jokes that put him on the comedy map.

“Can’t Stop the Signal” – ‘Firefly’ Actresses Discuss Beloved Cult Series’ Staying Power

Even though it only lasted 14 episodes – three of which were unaired – it was the passionate outcry of fans that saved Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon’s science-fiction/Western mash-up, when it was canceled by FOX in 2002. It was that same passionate outcry of fans – self-styled Browncoats – that led to the series being released on DVD in 2003 (allowing them to watch the series in its proper chronological order, the way it was meant to be watched as FOX aired the second episode first and the pilot episode last during Firefly’s original run).

It doesn’t stop there.

As a result of the fans’ relentless efforts, Universal Studios released Serenity, a big-screen continuation of the Firefly saga, in 2005 which reunited Whedon with original cast members Nathan Fillion (Capt. Malcolm Reynolds), Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne), Alan Tudyk (Hoban “Wash” Washburne), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb), Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye), Sean Maher (Dr. Simon Tam), Summer Glau (River Tam), and the late Ron Glass (Shepherd Derrial Book). It also introduced Chiwetel Ejiofor’s nameless villain known only as the Operative.

While it underperformed at the box office, the film received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Hugo Award for best Dramatic Presentation and the Nebula Award for Best Script. It would later amass quite a following on DVD and Blu-ray.

Many would think it would stop there, but it still doesn’t stop there.

Dark Horse Comics, under Whedon’s supervision, has released comics continuing the adventures of the Serenity crew. Fans have done their own fan-films, including Browncoats: Redemption and The ‘Verse.

Over the weekend at the Wizard World Chicago panel called “One Season and a Movie: A Conversation with Firefly’s Summer Glau & Jewel Staite,” the two actresses spoke about the franchise’s enduring popularity as this year marks its 15th anniversary.

“Even today we were talking about it,” said Glau. “We can’t believe it.”

Summer Glau and Jewel Staite sat on a couch, bantering with one another as they addressed a crowd of hundreds who roared with laughter and applause throughout the 45-minute panel. “It’s been a loooong time. It’s funny because people are starting to pass the show on to their kids – it’s just so great,” said Staite, eliciting applause. “And, of course, my child will watch it as well. I think that’s why – it’s moving from generation to generation now.” Her voice becomes gravelly: “And the Browncoats won’t let it die!” Speaking normally, “Which is great. That’s awesome. We love you guys.”

“What made the show so special is how you cared about those characters individually, and the way they interacted with each other was such a big part of why people loved it so much,” offered Glau.

Staite nodded. “Absolutely. I agree.”

The floor opened to Q&A from the audience. The most obvious one was: If there were more seasons, where would you have liked to see your characters go?

“I love this question because (fans) want it to live on. I’d want Simon and Kaylee to have babies, obviously,” Staite said, laughing.

Glau perked up at that. “I was doing a convention with Sean a while back. He got this question and he said the same thing.”

“He did?”

“And River can babysit,” Glau deadpanned.

The audience’s laughter swept the auditorium.

“No,” Staite said flatly, shaking her head. “No. Terrible idea.” Turning to Glau, she grinned big. “I loved that he said the same thing – that’s just the cutest!”

When asked if Firefly would’ve fared better had it been on another network, both Staite and Glau stated that they really couldn’t say. “I do think this: If the show started now, if it had a chance to come to fruition now with all these networks and platforms coming up with their own content, I think it’d have a much better chance,” explained Staite. “Y’know, that was back in the day when things in the industry were different then. There was five major juggernaut networks – that was it. And now, everybody’s doing something: Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and all that. I think if it had a home on something like that, it probably would’ve gotten a fair shot. Also, I have relatively passionate feelings about the Nielsen ratings system being totally antiquated bullshit!”

With that, the applause and cheers from the audience echoed off the walls, lasting close to a minute before Staite continued.

“It’s ridiculous. They gotta let it go,” she said. “Even back then, I’m not sure if it was a totally accurate way of seeing how many people were watching a show. Once we got cancelled, we were blown away that we got invited to a convention first of all. We’re like, ‘Really? Us? Wow!’ When we got there, there were tons of people there, so someone was watching. Like I said, passionate feelings.”

Both actresses have a soft spot for the episode “Out of Gas,” which is Staite’s favorite. “Gas” was the origin story of how Mal acquired the starship Serenity and assembled his motley crew. It differed from the other episodes as it took place in the present, the recent past, and the distant past.

“I love that one,” said Staite. “Makes me cry a little bit.”

“I think the story really bonded us together. At least, that’s how it felt for me. I felt like while we were shooting it, I just have some good memories of it. We did some powerful scenes together. That story, in particular, is very symbolic of our experience making it through together. Yeah, it’s very sentimental,” recalled Glau.

Glau’s favorite episode is “Objects in Space,” the final episode of the series. In it, bounty hunter Jubal Early (Richard Brooks) sneaks aboard Serenity and takes out the crew one by one as he attempts to capture River and collect the bounty on her. However, River outsmarts Early in the end, saves the entire crew and the ship, and dispatches Early. In the end, Mal confirms that she’s one of the crew, while Early tumbles helplessly through space.

“To me, ‘Objects’ is my favorite because it represents that dream of becoming an actress in what felt like overnight to me. Being on set was a dream. It was the only episode where I worked every day. I was such a supporting member (of the cast). I didn’t always have a lot to do in every episode. I didn’t want to go home. I had this tiny little apartment in the Valley. I didn’t have anything else to do; I just wanted to be there. Joss directed, which was so much fun, so that one’s particularly special to me as well,” said Glau.

Staite fielded the question if the cumbersome, ruffled, colorful dress Kaylee wore in “Shindig” was comfortable to wear.

“No, it was not,” she answered matter-of-factly. “It’s like wearing a birthday cake. For the first 10 minutes, it’s fun, then you have to pee – ‘Oh no. I can’t pee in this dress. Or sit down. Or do anything.’ There’s a scene where we get back to the ship and Badger’s (Mark Sheppard) taken over. You’ll notice I start off in a dress, then it cuts and when it comes back, I’m in my regular overalls. That’s because I talked Joss into letting me change. He’s like, ‘That doesn’t make any sense, though, for the story. Why would Badger let you take off and go change and come back?’ I was like, ‘I don’t care.’”

Staite added, tongue-in-cheek to much laughter: “So I used my feminine wiles on (Joss) and got to change (clothes).” She pumped her eyebrows. “There’s a little tidbit for you. Take that one home.”

As the panel went on, they shared their memories of working with Glass, who died Nov. 25, 2016 at the age of 71.

“You know what’s funny is we didn’t work together as a cast for very long. It was 5 months maybe… it was short. And the movie was 3-4 months. Because people like our show, we got to do so many conventions all over the world and we got to travel and hang out with each other in different cities – those are the bonding moments I remember and love. I’ve been to many conventions with Ron. He kills me – he’s one of the funniest people (with a) dry sense of humor. Dry. I miss that more than anything,” Staite fondly recalled. “Being together socially and being in these crazy cities all over the place and explore them together and have dinner and catch up and have fun. That feels like a hole now. It’s a weird thing when you sign the cast pictures, I’m beside Ron in some of them. I’m so used to leaving room for him to sign when I don’t see his signature on there and it dawns on me every time.”

Added Glau: “It doesn’t feel real yet because it was such a surprise. He had an addictive laugh. If he laughed, you would catch it. He had just the most delicious giggle. I could go on and on all day talking about him.”

Staite also spoke about being on set with the cast and crew, especially since everyone knew Firefly was an endangered series.

“It was fun. It was a fun job – it was a really too-good-to-be-true-job, to be honest,” she said. “But we all were genuinely having a good time, especially when we realized we were the underdog of the network and really starting to relish what we had and not take it for granted because the feeling was that it could be yanked out from under us at any given day. We were all kinda waiting for cancellation, which is a sucky feeling… but in a way, it kicked the fun up a notch. It was like, ‘Who cares? Let’s have a good time. Let’s enjoy this while we have this.’ When we did the movie, it was this amazing sense of justification. It was also so relaxed, we could have the same amount of fun but this time we weren’t afraid of losing our jobs. We knew what the beginning, the middle, and the end was, so we could just relax. That was really just the most fun.”

‘The Exorcist’ Season 2: John Cho and Brianna Hildebrand on Their Characters and the Horror Genre

The Exorcist stars John Cho and Brianna Hildebrand

Fox’s The Exorcist season one centered on the Rance family and their horrific encounter with the demon Pazuzu and traitors within the Catholic Church. Season two introduces new characters who’ll be dealing with demonic possession, with John Cho (Star Trek film franchise) and Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool) joining the series in key roles. Teamed up at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con, Cho and Hildebrand discussed their feelings about the horror genre and who they’ll be playing in The Exorcist season two premiering on September 29, 2017.

The Season 2 Plot: Season two picks up with Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera) and a newly collarless Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) out of Chicago and on the road, searching out evil. Across the Atlantic, Father Bennett (Kurt Egyiawan) attempts to weed out those within the Vatican who have turned against God. Ultimately, Tomas and Marcus are led to Andrew Kim (John Cho), a former child psychologist who runs a group home for five at-risk foster children on a secluded private island off the coast of Seattle. When one of the children under Andrew’s care is targeted by a powerful force, the two priests head west, setting themselves on a collision course with hell.

What can you tell us about your new characters on The Exorcist?

Brianna Hildebrand: “I play a foster kid named Verity. She is on the verge of turning 18 which means she is soon to be kicked out of the system. She is one of, I think, four foster kids. And then this guy plays Andrew who is the foster father.”

John Cho: “Yeah. I play a child psychologist who has lost his wife recently and is left alone to take care of this foster family off the coast of Seattle on an island – a spooky locale but perhaps metaphorical for his state of life at this time. I’m excited to play this family thing. I haven’t done that before on screen but I am a dad in real life and so I felt compelled to visit it. I’m interested in playing in a genre that I’ve not been in before. Further, I was interested in…I just hadn’t seen Asians in horror. That was a compelling component. I mean, it’s already a very multi-cultural cast but I thought that would be a fun thing to do with the genre.”

Did you have to brush up on your Exorcist 101 before the show?

John Cho: “I’ve got to do it now. I saw some episodes before I met with the producers but I haven’t seen the movie. So, I’m looking forward to getting Demonology 101.”

Had you seen the film?

Brianna Hildebrand: “Well, I saw the show after they contacted me. I sat down and watched the entire show. It took like two days of my life but it was not a waste of two days. And, I was an avid horror fan growing up. In high school, my friends and I would sit around and watch horror movies, slasher movies. It was a lot of fun for us. So, I watched The Exorcist when I was in junior high, I think. And I’m pretty sure I watched most of them. It was great. I was super freaked out.”

Was it fun to go from the horror film Tragedy Girls and its subversive, feminist take on the genre to a more traditional The Exorcist type of horror?

Brianna Hildebrand: […] “I’m super excited about it. And Tragedy Girls really did introduce me to sort of being on this side; instead of watching horror, being in the horror. I think all of the blood and the prosthetics, that was my favorite part so I’m super stoked to see what comes in this and how much fun we have with it.”

What did you think about season two’s first script?

John Cho: (Laughing) “Yeah, it’s a disaster. It needs a lot of work. I have my red pen out. No, it’s really good. It starts very kinetically with Marcus and Tomas’ storyline and then we go to this artificial stasis with our family at peace. And then it flips again. So, yeah, it was very satisfying. It was a very satisfying read. It portends well for the upcoming season.”

Modern American horror has stolen/imported a lot from Asian horror. Can you talk about the presence of Asian American actors in American horror being long overdue?

John Cho: “Yeah I noticed that and then they don’t use Asians in their adaptations. Again, I’m just taking a little bit of glee in planting that flag for the genre.”

You were in Sleepy Hollow. Are you a fan of horror? Do you like to look for those things that are different in the genre?

John Cho: “I grew up being…it was very taboo for me so I’ve avoided it mostly throughout my life. My father was a preacher, and yet I was thinking about this. I watched episodes of season one and I found it to be very faith-affirming in its own way. So it’s almost like believing in the Devil is like believing in God, and vice versa. It’s a package deal. But, yeah, I don’t know. My feelings about horror are very complex and I’m going to be working that out this season, what my relationship is with it because I think it has to do a lot with my relationship with my family. That’s a confession.”

Is faith important to your characters in the show?

John Cho: “You know, I’m not sure.”

Brianna Hildebrand: “I’m not sure what I can say about that, actually.”

John Cho: “Let me say this. From what I know faith is addressed within the family. I can say that.”

Someone will get possessed in season two. Are you ready for the physicality of that based on what you saw in season one?

John Cho: “I heard Geena Davis didn’t use a stunt double. It’s the first and only time I’ll say this: what an idiot Geena Davis is! (Laughing) I’m all for stunt doubles. We don’t know who it is.”

Brianna Hildebrand: “Not yet.”
