FX’s Fargo season three episode five ended with Nikki (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) curled up in a bathtub after suffering a severe beating at the hands of Meemo and Yuri. Episode six titled ‘The Lord of No Mercy’ begins with Nikki struggling to tell Ray (Ewan McGregor) who attacked her, describing one as Asian and one as Russian. Unfortunately, she didn’t manage to get their names or the license plate of their car. Every part of her body hurts and as she sits in front of a mirror thinking about the attack, Ray – who’s been quietly stewing – leaps into action. He rifles through drawers and cabinets until he finds his bullets and gun, and Nikki asks if he’s ready. “Oh, you betcha,” he replies.

Varga (David Thewlis) tells the story of the collapse of Lehman Brothers bank and the havoc it caused. His next true story lays out how WWI was started by a sandwich. After a failed attempt to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Gavrilo Princip noticed the Archduke’s car outside a deli where he was having lunch. He went outside and shot Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, at point blank range.

Varga’s final true story features footage of the 1969 Moon landing. The camera pulls back to show the landing was shot on a Hollywood sound stage. He’s been telling these stories to Sy (Michael Stuhlbarg) who’s been looking at him like an alien creature. Sy doesn’t believe the Moon landing was fake. “Let each man say what he deems truth and let truth itself be commended onto God,” says Varga, finally getting to the point. Stussy Lots is getting $50 million in new loans to be used to buy 16 more lots. That will double the company’s size in three months, and Sy’s not in the least bit happy about this development.

Emmit agrees with Varga about the expansion, but Sy is concerned about the IRS. Varga reveals the IRS will be going over fake books, something Sy didn’t know and shouldn’t concern himself with. Varga’s not worried because international shell companies hide the real money from sight. It’s all been taken care of and Sy doesn’t need to be involved in the details.

Meemo (Andy Yu) meets with IRS Agent LaRue Dollard (Hamish Linklater), matching Dollard’s carefully laid out folder, notepad, calculator, and pens with his own. Meemo slides paperwork across the table to Dollard, informing him he’s representing Stussy Lots as an attorney and is protesting this audit. Meemo demands Agent Dollard give the required 30-day notice and a list of who he wishes to speak with. Meemo also demands Dollard leave immediately.

Following the brief meeting, Meemo gets in the car with Yuri (Goran Bogdan) and they drive off unaware Ray and Nikki are close behind. Yuri and Meemo arrive in the lot where they left the 18-wheeler in episode one and knock on the rear doors. Varga steps out while from a safe distance Nikki and Ray watch this all go down. Ray starts to get out with his gun ready, but Nikki convinces him they need to wait for a better opportunity.

Back at home, Ray’s worried Nikki has internal injuries but she refuses to go to the hospital since the cops and the bad guys are looking for her. Nikki believes Emmit might be doing something illegal against his will, and Ray asks her to explain. Nikki thinks there are shady dealings going on, and she’s even figured out Emmit probably burrowed cash from a disreputable lender. Nikki wants to know for sure what’s going on before they make their move. (Nikki is definitely the brains of this operation.)

Fargo Season 3 Episode 6 Carrie Coon

Meanwhile, Chief Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) and Officer Winnie Lopez (Olivia Sandoval) show up at Emmit’s office wanting more details on the car accident. They’re starting to tie all the players together and Varga interrupts to claim this is his area of expertise. He won’t give Gloria and Winnie his name, simply saying he’s an associate of Emmit’s. When Gloria asks about Ray, Varga speaks up and asks what that has to do with an auto accident. They inform the men their investigation could tie into a homicide, and Emmit is obviously unaware of what she’s talking about. He does admit he read about Ennis Stussy in the newspaper, and Gloria fills in the details of how he died and that the house was ransacked.

She also reveals Maurice LeFay did the actual killing and that Ray was Maurice’s parole officer. That led them to the car accident and Ray arguing with someone who works for Emmit. Gloria brings the story around to say it’s curious the victim was also a Stussy with the first initial ‘E.’ Plus, the town had a similar name to Emmit’s address.

Gloria asks if there’s a feud going on between Emmit and Ray, and Emmit admits they’ve had their differences. Varga interjects, asking for an explanation as to the connection between Ray and the victim. Varga then goes off on a tangent about there being 24 Hitlers in 1932 in Germany. Gloria calls bullshit on Varga and replies, “24 exactly?” before returning to questioning Emmit.

Gloria asks if Ray wanted something of Emmit’s, and Emmit finally puts two and two together and comes up with Ray was trying to rob him. Varga dismisses the officers, saying he’ll contact Gloria and Winnie if they have anything else to say.

After the officers leave, Varga sounds impressed Ray actually has a backbone.

Later that night, Varga searches for Gloria Burgle on the internet but finds nothing. He tries multiple searches and discovers Eden Valley’s police station doesn’t have any computers.

Varga gives Yuri instructions to go to the police station and quietly gather info on Ennis Stussy. He also tells Meemo to find Ray and Nikki and kill them.

At home, Ray is tending to Nikki when there’s a knock on the door. He grabs his gun and makes his way to the front door. The knocking continues but now Nikki sees another person’s shadow outside the bedroom window. It’s Gloria and Winnie and they leave when no one answers. Ray says, “Heat’s on. We better blow.”

A while later they sneak out the back with their suitcases. As they pull away, a car follows them. Nikki and Ray arrive at the Ambassador Motor Inn and Ray gets a room while Nikki keeps watch. The motel is nearly empty and once in their room, Ray helps Nikki into bed before grabbing their suitcases. Nikki needs aspirin and cold compresses, reminding him to pay with cash. He’s out of cash and can’t believe he left the money they stole from the bank back at his place. He volunteers to head back to the house to get the money.

Meemo waits around the corner from their hotel room and watches as Ray’s car pulls away.

Nikki slips out of the room and walks right by where Meemo was hiding while on her way to the ice machine. She failed to close her door and Meemo must be in the room as the door squeaks and almost shuts.

Ray makes it to the house but Emmit’s already there, sitting alone in the dark. “You win. I’m done. Whatever you want, just tell me,” says Emmit who sounds resigned. He reveals the ashes at the bank that Ray poured into the trash were his dog’s, Laverne. Ray admits he was looking for his stamp, and Emmit’s confused why Ray is the one person who doesn’t like him. Emmit says he’s a fair man who helps people when they’re down, but Ray still feels like his brother doesn’t help him. Ray also feels lessor than his sibling, and Emmit’s had it up to here with that argument.

Emmit hands his brother the framed stamp, telling him their beef is now over. He doesn’t want their relationship to continue this way so he’s giving Ray the stamp, but Ray can’t just accept it. He claims it was his from the start and when Emmit agrees, Ray’s still not willing to stop this nonsense. They shove the framed stamp back and forth at each other until it hits Ray in the face and the glass shatters. He has a few minor cuts on his face, but they aren’t the problem. When the glass shattered, a large piece wedged in his neck. Emmit tells him not to pull it out but Ray does anyway, with blood immediately spurting from the wound.

Ray grabs his throat, looks at the blood on his hand, and reaches for his brother. He sinks to his knees and then falls facedown on the floor, dead in a pool of blood. Emmit calls Varga and after Varga finishes talking about symphonies, Ray confesses there’s been an accident and asks Varga to meet him at Ray’s.

Back at the hotel, Meemo waits for Nikki to return. He gets a call as Nikki notices the door’s open and she looks around quickly before entering the room. She kicks open the bathroom door and no one is there.

Varga arrives with Meemo and Emmit points out every place he might have left fingerprints. Varga tells Meemo to grab the stamp and the frame but leave the glass. Varga then asks Emmit where he’s supposed to be, and it appears he should be at a restaurant having dinner with Sy. Varga instructs Emmit to go through the restaurant’s back door, use the restroom, and put cold water on his face. Varga then reveals the plan is to frame Nikki for Ray’s murder. The cover story is that Nikki was being abused and so she cut Ray’s throat. Varga also warns him to be upset and say he hasn’t seen his brother in days. Whatever he says to the cops, he needs to be vague.

Emmit quietly says, “I didn’t mean to,” and Varga replies, “No one ever does.”

Gloria’s driving home after work but changes her mind and pulls a U-turn. She radios in asking for Officer Lopez to be informed she’s returning to Ray’s house. She wants Winnie to meet her there.

At least one of the characters killed off during the season 12 finale of The CW’s Supernatural won’t be resurrected for season 13. Mark Sheppard, who has played Crowley since debuting the character in 2009 during season five, will not be returning as a series regular for the show’s 13th season. Sheppard confirmed his departure via an Instagram post in which he thanked the Supernatural family and said he’s moving on to something new.

Fan favorites Crowley and Castiel both died during the season 12 finale, however unlike Sheppard, Misha Collins has been giving fans a reason to be optimistic about Castiel’s return. Collins tweeted on May 20th that “Cas has a future.” Jared Padalecki also slipped up and mentioned Collins was part of the cast involved in the upcoming Supernatural/Scooby-Doo animated crossover in season 13.

Sheppard also posted this to Instragram a few days after the season 12 finale: “A “fitting” end to season 12. I wrote this line to sum up the feeling behind the finale. Surprise, surprise, it was cut. Seems so appropriate now! Im asking you again to join me in supporting a great cause. Thank you for all the love. xoxox represent.com/sheppard

‘The Flash’ Season 3 Finale Recap: Episode 23, Finish Line

The Flash season 3 episode 23 Grant Gustin

The CW’s The Flash season three finale kicks off right where episode 22 left off, with Iris (Candice Patton) dying in Barry’s arms after Savitar stabbed her. Poor Joe (Jesse L. Martin) is both shocked and distraught, and H.R. arrives where Joe is perched grabbing Joe’s gun and prepared to shoot Savitar. Unfortunately, it’s too late.

Barry (Grant Gustin) cries as he cradles Iris’s body, but then he sees H.R.’s drumsticks fall to the ground. Iris gasps for breath and uses the transmogrifier device to reveal H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) posing as Iris! Up on the roof, H.R. transforms back into Iris and tells Joe she’s okay, and Joe’s both surprised and relieved by this development. Barry asks how H.R. did this and it’s revealed in flashbacks that after Cisco (Carlos Valdes) left he used the piece of armor Barry cut off Savitar to track him to his lair. Once there, he was able to free Iris.

Unfortunately, the armor piece reattached itself to the suit causing Savitar and Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) to see them trying to escape. Realizing they can’t outrun them, H.R. takes Iris’s place using the transmogrifier. Just as Iris is trying to protest, she – now looking like H.R. – gets knocked out by a cold blast from Killer Frost.

Once more in the present, Tracy (Anne Dudek) runs to H.R., crying. He tells her it’s okay, that he had to prove he wasn’t a coward, he knows she’s going to be brilliant, and that he loves her. H.R. calls out to Barry and Barry pulls him close. H.R. asks him to tell Cisco something for him. He whispers into Barry’s ear and then after telling him to go stop Savitar, H.R. dies.

Out in the woods, Killer Frost says “Bye-bye, Vibe” as she’s about to kill Cisco. Savitar shows up and commands her to stop, informing her he needs Cisco alive to build something. The evil speedster reacts to new memories and Killer Frost asks him what’s wrong. He tells her Iris is alive and that H.R. took her place. “But you said H.R. lives,” says Frost. Cisco adds, “That means the future is changing.”

Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Julian (Tom Felton) is being brought up to speed on H.R.’s death. Joe asks what will happen now since Savitar failed to kill Iris, and Barry and Julian explain that since Iris is alive Barry won’t go down the dark path and create all those time remnants to stop him. The Time Paradox will eventually catch up to Savitar and he’ll be erased from existence. Joe asks how long that takes to happen and Barry says it could be a few hours, but reminds everyone that Savitar has been planning this for centuries. Since he took the speed force bazooka and Cisco, he’s going to have a backup plan. Joe asks for some good news and Julian tells everyone he found a cure for Caitlin, with her mother’s help.

Savitar brings both Killer Frost and Cisco to his lair and tells Cisco he wants him to alter the speed force gun and make it a quantum splicer so he can fragment himself throughout time. That way the time paradox won’t be able to reach him. Cisco refuses to do it, saying he’ll just wait for him to evaporate.

Savitar gets close to Cisco and makes his arm vibrate. “That’s your plan? You’re going to Reverse Flash me if I don’t help?” asks Cisco in a smart-aleck tone. “Not you..her,” replies Savitar, pointing to Killer Frost who’s out of earshot. Savitar tells Cisco he just received a new memory and that Julian is at S.T.A.R. Labs now with a cure for Caitlin. He can have her back, but not if she’s dead.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry’s taking a break and considering the situation when Iris joins him to talk about stopping Savitar. (So happy the heroes seem to think they have enough time for a chat while Cisco and Caitlin are still in grave danger!) Barry reveals that Snart said something about The Flash staying a hero that has stayed with him and that maybe this time to defeat their enemy it’s not about being stronger or faster or using anger. Maybe it’s time to try another approach.

Barry meets up with Savitar at an old garage and tries to reach out to whatever part of him is still in Savitar. He reminds Savitar about a childhood memory of his parents when they were taking him to a science fair and the car got a flat tire in this small one-road town. They ended up stuck there all day and spent the time eating fries and ice cream at a diner and later that night watched the local fireworks. It’s the happiest memory he has of being with his parents. He asks Savitar what the name of the town is and he remembers. “I’m still in there. Come home,” says Barry to his time remnant.

Savitar and Barry return to S.T.A.R. Labs and Team Flash is surprised and upset to see him. Iris slowly walks over and touches Savitar’s scarred face, softly assuring him they will help him. Savitar won’t reveal where he has Caitlin and Cisco until they come up with a plan to save him from the time paradox. Everyone agrees their best bet is for Tracy to come up with an idea, except she refuses because Savitar killed H.R. who she loved. Iris tells everyone she thinks she knows who can get through to her and in the next scene Harry (Tom Cavanagh) from Earth-2 shows up to talk to Tracy. He tells her H.R. sacrificed himself for these people because he loved them and if she doesn’t help them, his death will be in vain.

Savitar confesses to Barry and Iris how it’s weird being back at S.T.A.R. Labs and questions where he will fit into their lives. Iris assures him they’ll figure it all out, and Barry backs her up. Savitar finally agrees to go and get Caitlin and Cisco. Seconds after he races out, they hear alarms and Harry and Julian check the monitor to see a surging power in the breach room. Julian realizes it’s the Philosopher’s Stone and Barry and Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) race everyone out before it explodes.

Back at Savitar’s lair, Killer Frost asks if Cisco has finished altering the speed force gun and he says yes. She’s pleased but not for long because Cisco tells her Savitar is just using her and when he doesn’t need her anymore, he’ll turn on her. Frost says he won’t, but her eyes show doubt.

Savitar returns and Frost asks him how it went. Savitar admits it was what he expected and that he was able to get rid of a few problems. Cisco grows concerned and asks what he did. Savitar ignores him and asks Killer Frost if the speed force gun is ready. Savitar tells Frost to kill Cisco and as she prepares ready to freeze him, Cisco once again says Savitar will betray her. Just then Gypsy (Jessica Camacho) portals in and saves Cisco from Frost’s cold blast.

Gypsy creates a portal for them to escape through and Cisco yells, “No!” but it’s too late. She takes them back to Barry’s apartment all while Cisco’s yelling that he was getting through to Caitlin. She yells right back, saying this is the thanks she gets for saving his ungrateful rear end. He asks her how she knew he was in trouble and Gypsy tells him they’re connected. Cisco realizes where they are and tells Team Flash he knows what Savitar plans to do.

Savitar and Killer Frost travel to an open field where he opens a time portal. He tells Frost to kill the Black Flash when he comes out after Savitar. She does, saying, “See ya around, Hunter,” after Black Flash freezes and breaks into pieces. Savitar has Frost shoot him with the speed force bazooka while standing in front of the time portal. It doesn’t work and instead, it frees Jay Garrick from his prison in the speed force.

Team Flash arrives to confront Savitar. Cisco taunts the evil speedster, telling him there was no way he would make something to help him. Instead, he made a skeleton key which just freed Garrick.

The battle’s on with Barry, Wally, and Jay chasing Savitar with some extremely impressive CGI effects and Killer Frost fighting Vibe and Gypsy. Savitar manages to wound Wally and Jay and knocks the wind out of Barry. Cisco gets the upper hand and knocks Frost to the ground in their fight. He walks up to her and puts out his hand to give her a deadly vibe hit. She looks up at him and tells him to go ahead and go bad. “Never,” he replies and tosses her the cure that Julian and her mother came up with. Cisco tells her he’s giving her a choice to be Caitlin again. As he walks away, Savitar races up knocking Gypsy to the ground and grabbing Cisco, declaring he’s going to pay for what he’s done.

Frost looks at Cisco, helpless in Savitar’s grasp, and her blue crystal eyes turn back to brown. Savitar raises up his arm to kill Cisco when he gets hit with a strong cold blast and slammed into a tree. Caitlin saved Cisco! She walks over and gives him a hand getting up. Savitar approaches Cisco and Caitlin telling her he knew she didn’t have it in her. Barry speeds over and is about to hit Savitar but gets pinned down by him. Savitar warns Barry if he’s going to die, he’ll kill everyone Barry loves before he goes. Enraged, Barry vibrates his way into Savitar’s suit and forces evil Barry out of it.

Barry and evil Barry fight with Barry in the Savitar suit knocking evil Barry to the ground. Barry pulls out the blade in Savitar’s suit to kill evil Barry, and Caitlin and Cisco look on concerned their friend is about to become a killer. “Do it! You kill me, you become me. Either way, I live,” says evil Barry. Barry retracts the blade and vibrates, destroying the suit from the inside and making both Caitlin and Cisco smile. Barry delivers a knock-out punch to his evil time remnant after telling him, “I will never let the pain and the darkness determine who I am. I will never be you.”

Barry looks at Caitlin and Cisco who are smiling at him and he begins to walk over to join them. As he does, evil Barry gets up and starts to run toward Barry to deliver a killing blow. A shot is heard and evil Barry falls to the ground, his body almost instantly evaporating into the speed force. Iris shot and killed Savitar. Barry hugs Iris who says, “All these months you were trying to save me from him. Look at that, I saved you.”

The scene changes to the funeral for H.R. Iris delivers a short but meaningful speech on how H.R. was there when they needed him most and that he’s her hero. Barry pulls Cisco aside and tells him what H.R. whispered in his ear as he was dying. “This took strength, and he [Cisco] gave it to me,” says Barry.

Cisco, Barry, and Julian see Caitlin standing nearby. They join her and she says she’s sorry about H.R. Cisco asks her if she’s ready to come home and Caitlin replies, “I don’t have a home.” Julian tells her she always has a home with her friends – and with him – but Caitlin, looking sad, gives Julian back the cure Cisco gave her and says, “I’m sorry, Julian. I’m not Caitlin anymore.” “You’re not Killer Frost,” says Barry. “No, I’m not. I’m something else and I need to figure out what that is on my own,” answers Caitlin. “Hey,” says Cisco as he starts to move toward her but Caitlin looks at Cisco with pleading eyes and says in a desperate voice “Cisco, let me go.” As Caitlin walks away, Cisco, Barry, and Julian watch her leave, looking sad and feeling as though they still failed her.

At their apartment, Barry and Iris are talking about wedding plans when what feels like an earthquake hits. They notice lightning strikes over the city and reach out to Cisco to get to S.T.A.R. Labs. Once there, Team flash tries to figure out what’s happening and after a few minutes, Wally and Cisco are able to get a fix on a power source. Jay and Barry realize it’s the Speed Force that has become unstable. Cisco freed Jay from the prison Barry created so now it needs someone to take his place.

The team heads outside and Barry says he has to stabilize it by running into it. This of course upsets everyone, especially Iris who says there has to be another way and tells him that Central City needs The Flash. Barry walks over to Wally and says it will have one, telling him he’s ready. Barry says his goodbyes to Julian and Harry who he asks to stick around and Harry replies, “Anything for you.”

The Speed Force appears in the form of Barry’s mother and tells a very upset Iris that Barry, like all runners, has reached his finish line. His race is over. Iris pleads that she can’t take him with her, but Barry tells Iris she isn’t taking him; he has to go. All of this started with his mistake, with being selfish and creating Flashpoint. “This is my penance. This is my redemption,” says Barry, finally taking responsibility for what he has done.

“My beautiful boy, it’s time to rest,” says the Speed Force. Barry tells Cisco not to mess up what he has with Gypsy and that they’ll be looking to him now to lead. “I’m not a hero like you,” replies Cisco. “You’ve always been my hero,” replies Barry as he gives his best friend one last hug. Barry then says his goodbyes to Joe, hugging his surrogate father and thanking him for saving him when he was 11 by taking him in and giving him a home and so much love. Barry next approaches Iris who says through her tears they were supposed to have their happy ending. Barry tells her she needs to keep living her life to keep growing and loving and to keep running for him. He makes her promise to keep running, which she does. With one last kiss, Barry walks away and takes his mother’s hand as his friends and family watch. Barry turns to look back and smiles at all of them as he enters the Speed Force which closes behind him. The storm is over and the Speed Force is once again in balance.

The Flash Season 3 Episode 23 Review:

Action-packed, suspenseful, and heartbreaking, episode 23 titled “Finish Line” ends season three of The Flash with the most emotional and saddest cliffhanger of the series to date, leaving two main characters lost from Team Flash quite possibly for good.

There are so many stand-out performances in this episode it’s hard to know where to start. Grant Gustin does an amazing job of bringing to life the evil version of Barry with true eeriness and malice. Gustin created a villain who will haunt the series from this point on. His emotional performance at the end of the episode as Barry says goodbye to his loved ones before going into the Speed Force is one of the most emotionally powerful scenes in the show and Grant nails it.

Candice Patton once again is terrific as she conveys relief after she’s saved from her foretold death and reunited with Barry. That transforms into loss when she realizes there will be no happy ending for her and Barry as he has to sacrifice himself to save the city and maybe the world. The final scene is truly compelling.

The cast member who has had the best storyline this season has to be Danielle Panabaker. Her battle to stay Caitlin Snow before eventually becoming Killer Frost was entertaining to watch unfold, and Panabaker shines once again as she captured the struggle inside her characters when Caitlin finally emerges and regains control to save Cisco from Savitar and help Team Flash win the day. The scene at the funeral where she stays back not feeling as though she has a right to be there and admits to Barry, Cisco, and Julian that she doesn’t have a home and isn’t Caitlin anymore was truly heartbreaking.

With Caitlin lost and trying to discover who she is and Barry sacrificing himself to the Speed Force to find redemption, here’s hoping season four will find the new Team Flash able to find a way to bring both Barry and Caitlin back home where they belong.

Charles Parnell (Pariah), Travis Van Winkle (Heart of Dixie), Marissa Neitling (Leverage), Christina Elmore (Fruitvale Station), Jocko Sims (Masters of Sex), Bren Foster (Days of Our Lives) and Kevin Michael Martin also star in the popular action series.

The Plot: Over the course of the first three seasons, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James has been the central vehicle for the discovery and distribution of the cure to the Red Flu, resulting in near global recovery. After the chilling events at the end of last season, Tom Chandler (Dane) has given up his heroic titles and responsibilities and sought solace – and anonymity — with his family in a small fishing village in Greece.

Meanwhile, Captain Slattery (Baldwin) and the crew of Nathan James have discovered that the virus has “jumped kingdoms” and now infects the world’s food crops, bringing humanity to the brink of global famine. As the ship traverses the Mediterranean in search of a solution that can save the world’s food supply, Chandler encounters his own enemies in Greece. His “hero’s journey” becomes a modern day retelling of Homer’s Odyssey.

KROQ Weenie Roast 2017 Review and Photos

The annual KROQ Weenie Roast y Fiesta marked its 25th year with a new venue – the Stub Hub Center in Carson, Calif, seeing as its previous home at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre has been demolished – and a remarkably strong line-up that included a number of female performers who truly ruled the stage and commanded the mini-stadium. Even the sweltering heat, with the temperature at over 90 degrees, didn’t keep away the over 25,000 music fans who turned out for the sold-out show on May 20th.

After Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness kicked things off on the main stage, the AFI / No Doubt mash-up band known as Dreamcar saw frontman Davey Havok strutting around the stage, striking poses, in stark contrast to the subdued and demure Lana Del Rey, who followed. Del Rey’s dreamy vocals had her teenaged fans in the front shedding tears and handing her gifts and flowers, throughout the length of her set, and she took the time to stop and greet them and sign autographs.

One of the most fun and highest energy sets of the day was from Paramore, whose frontwoman, Hayley Williams, danced and spun and ran around. In an unusual move, but one that the fans ate up, the band opened and closed with their latest single, “Hard Times,” which is an undeniably catchy track. Williams even brought up a fan to help sing on “Misery Business,” who seemed nervous at first, but then fully embraced the opportunity and made the most of it, for what is sure to be a long-lasting memory.

Up next was 311, who made their way through one hit after the other and had the crowd dancing and singing along, before madman frontman Matt Shultz gave his best strut, as Cage the Elephant turned in a blistering set that left it all out on the stage. And then, Imagine Dragons kicked things off with “Radioactive,” which is a track that just never gets old, played a stripped down version of “It’s Time,” and made sure to include “Believer.” Singer Dan Reynolds clearly loves and is at home being on stage, and has the talent to sustain a long-time career.

After 311 and Imagine Dragons both made mention of how they were affected by the recent loss of singer Chris Cornell, Incubus took it one step further when singer Brandon Boyd brought Matt Shultz back to join him on a stunning and heartfelt rendition of “Black Hole Sun,” as an image of Cornell was on the screen behind them. And although headliner Lorde suffered from some technical difficulties at the beginning of her set, she weathered it well, as she joked about not being very funny while she tried to kill time. By the time things got back on track and she was able to get back to the music, those technical difficulties were easily forgotten, as she sang and danced around and made a point of mentioning how happy she was to be back on the stage and performing again.

As always, the KROQ Weenie Roast was a night of truly great music that seems impossible to top, but that always manages to do so, the next year.

Sean Gunn Talks About Playing Rocket Raccoon and Kraglin in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

Sean Gunn did double-duty in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, portraying space-pirate Kraglin and doing the motion reference performance for Rocket Raccoon. He pointed out the difference between motion reference and motion capture.

“Motion capture uses balls or dots that you see on people’s faces because a computer can use an algorithm to change their face into a computer-generated face. In the case of a Rocket, a raccoon’s face is too different from a human’s face for that algorithm to work well enough … it doesn’t look good. You need a more humanoid face for it to work. It has to be done via reference, which means the animators watch and animate what they see. What they’re doing is filming my performance and interpreting my face and my movements the same way they would interpret Rocket’s face and movements. I think it’s one of the reasons Rocket works as well as he does because the other actors are looking at an actual person,” explained Gunn, 43, a DePaul University alumnus who recently appeared at the Motor City Comic Con in Novi, MI, alongside fellow GOTG actor Michael Rooker (Yondu).

When Kraglin and Rocket appear in the same scene, Gunn does double duty.

“A scene like the one in the forest where Kraglin’s part of the group standing around Rocket who’s in the middle (was tricky) because these were shots they were both in together,” he said. “We had to shoot it multiple times. We had to do a few extra takes to make sure we got everything in there. It’s a weird process. I’d never thought I’d find myself doing it – it just fell into my lap.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – directed by James Gunn, Sean’s older brother – is the 15th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a sequel to 2014’s sleeper hit Guardians of the Galaxy. GOTG2 was the No. 1 movie at the box office for two consecutive weeks, grossing more than approximately $733 million worldwide to date. It was barely edged out of the No. 1 slot in its third week of release during the weekend of May 22 by Alien: Covenant.

Gunn is reprising his role as Rocket – voiced by Bradley Cooper – in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, where the Avengers and Guardians join forces to battle Thanos (Josh Brolin), who’s been lurking in the background since 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers.

“I’ve worked with a lot of very cool actors so far,” he said. “I definitely feel privileged to be part of just such a large and impressive cast.”

Talk about working with your brother.

Sean Gunn: “I think it would be a more fun answer to say that I hate it and he picks on me all the time. The truth is there’s nobody else in the world I’d rather work with than my brother James because he’s so freakin’ good at what he does. He and I have an excellent working relationship because we communicate with each other so well. There’s so much history between us, that we communicate more efficiently and he’s a lot of fun; he’s a good guy to hang out with. When you add it all up, I love working for him. He still messes with me sometimes, but that’s to be expected.”

Are you amazed at how well Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is doing?

Sean Gunn: “Yes and no. You never can predict that kind of success. Knowing the success of the first movie and being on the inside of the second movie as I was from conception to release, I knew it was good and something I was proud of. Those of us who collaborated on it were proud to have put our hearts into it. I had a good feeling it’d have a good audience and be well-liked. That said, how can you predict how mammoth of a hit something’s gonna be? It’s certainly doing great, and I think that’s awesome.”

Before the first movie, nobody knew who Rocket was. Nowadays, he’s a household name. In your words, what made the first movie such a blockbuster?

Sean Gunn: “It always goes back to story. The story is really strong, and this idea you can build a family out of a group of misfits is one that resonates with a lot of people (who) see themselves as misfits and can relate. It’s a true family film not in the sense it was a kids’ film, but people of all ages genuinely enjoyed it… If I can brag about my brother for a minute, I think he was perfectly suited for that material; it was right in his wheelhouse. In addition to being the right person, he also has a knack for collaborating with other creative minds at Marvel and Disney. I don’t think he runs away from the other creative minds involved in the process the way some directors probably do. All those things put together made for a hit movie.”

In the movie, Kraglin accidentally shoots Drax (Dave Bautista) with an arrow. What happens to him?

Sean Gunn: “I don’t know, but whatever it is, I hope he lives (laughter). I have no idea. I guess that’s where the story’s paused for right now.”

Your brother’s returning for a third movie. Are you?

Sean Gunn: “It’s so early in that process, I couldn’t comment on that one way or another.”

This is your first time at Motor City. What’s the best part of conventions for you?

Sean Gunn: “Really, just meeting fans. I’ve been a professional actor for 20 years now, but I’ve been wanting to be a professional actor my whole life. Living with the daily grind to build a career and get a career going, all you really want is an audience to like and appreciate your work. When you’re fortunate enough as I have been to be part of these great franchises and have all these great fans, I’m very grateful for it, and I love meeting them, talking to them, seeing what they have to say, taking pictures and everything – that’s great! That’s my favorite part!”
