David Giuntoli Interview – ‘Grimm’ Season 5, Nick’s Revenge, and Adalind’s Baby

David Giuntoli Interview Grimm Season Five

Grimm star David Giuntoli describes his character Nick Burkhardt as extremely focused in the upcoming fifth season of the NBC series. The Grimm cast hit the stage at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con for a jam-packed panel and also participated in roundtable interviews to discuss the upcoming season of the popular series. During our interview, Giuntoli explained the mindset of Nick in season five and the tone of the upcoming season.

Giuntoli’s Grimm co-stars have described season five as almost a reboot of the show. “I’d say they’re localizing it more to what it was,” said Giuntoli. “It seems to be Portland, it seems to be Wesen. It seems to be Nick plotting revenge. I would definitely say I don’t really care about being a cop anymore. I’m just like I’m doing my own Grimm thing. I would say the dynamics have certainly changed. Now Adalind’s having my baby. What?! So that’s changing the dynamics quite a bit. But I want to figure out who did all of these things to me. They beheaded my mom, they killed my woman, and I want to get whoever did that.”

Given the changes in store, will Nick be in a dark place for the entire fifth season? “I would imagine, largely,” answered Giuntoli.

“It’s always been kind of dark. It started with terrible things for him, but it’s been fun watching this guy in real time age every year and learn. I would say it’s really fun getting another crack at something all the time. In episodic TV you can try new things all the time, regroup during the hiatus and come up with new ideas,” said Giuntoli. “That’s really rewarding.”

Season five could also see more of Nick and Monroe (played by Silas Weir Mitchell) working together. “I think it’ll re-up the Nick and Monroe relationship. I think they realized that the fans really enjoy that so they want to bring it back. I’ve seen evidence of that. Trubel is who I’m concerned about right now. Something bad happens to her right away,” revealed Giuntoli.

As for the possibility of a relationship between Nick and Adalind (played by Claire Coffee), Giuntoli revealed, “I’m getting feelers that that might in some way happen. Now, I would play probably very against that. I feel like she’s the mom of my son, not my lady, you know? So there are some scenes where they’re like, ‘How are we going to do this?’ kind of scenes.”

Speaking of the baby, fans can expect the new addition to Nick’s family to drastically affect him and maybe even bring him some sort of happiness. “I lose everybody so this is the one thing that keeps me around, I think,” said Giuntoli.

Giuntoli’s co-stars brought up their love of the idea of a musical episode, and Giuntoli says he’d be into it. “I would do a musical episode in a heartbeat. In a heartbeat. That will come like season seven,” said Giuntoli, laughing.

Judy Greer and Amber Nash Interview on ‘Archer’ Season 7

The cast of FX’s animated boundary-pushing series Archer made the trip to San Diego for the 2015 Comic-Con where, unlike previous years, they didn’t show the first episode of the upcoming season. Season seven is currently filming and according to Amber Nash (“Pam Poovey”), big changes are in store.

“Well, we can’t talk a lot about what’s happening this season because it’s a giant surprise,” said Nash during our interview at Comic-Con. “We usually play the first episode but we’re not this year because some sh*t is going down. But I’ll tell you, we’ve recorded two episodes so far and I always say this but I swear to god it’s true, it gets funnier every season. I think Adam [Reed’s] really charged up to write this season because it’s different and fun. So, yeah, Pam’s still Pam. She’s always going to be crazy and crass and getting into trouble.”

“I am a fan of the show in addition to being on it, so I get as excited to read the new scripts as I am assuming the audience is watch them when they’re on TV,” said Judy Greer (“Cheryl Tunt”), during a separate interview at the Con. “I can never ever predict what Adam Reed is going to come up with next and that’s what makes it so fun. I’ve worked on shows where you’re like, ‘Yeah, okay, I guess that’s what happens in the next episode.’ And this always blows my mind every time.”

The scripts are surprising, but neither Greer nor Nash have ever said no to saying a particular line. “No. Never. Sometimes I don’t understand some of their weird political, historical or pop culture references and I have to ask them what things mean, but I’ll say anything,” said Greer. “Do anything. Well, if the show goes live-action I don’t think I could do this role. I probably wouldn’t have gotten cast in it.”

Nash agreed. “No, because they’re all pretty funny and it’s like I can’t believe I get to say that line. But the one that got me was…I say this in interviews all the time and even saying it in interviews is terrifying…is when she says, ‘Masturbate until my fingers bleed.’ I was just like, ‘Oh my god, how horrifying. The fact that your fingers would bleed first is the really terrifying part.'”

Greer and Nash are both still enjoying being a part of the Archer voice cast, with Nash calling it the best thing ever. “I love her. I think what’s so cool about Pam, too, is that she changes so much, and she’s changed so much over the years. I actually just went back and read the pilot script for Archer and the first time that Pam’s introduced in the script it says, ‘Pam sits behind a desk. She’s the mousy HR director.’ I was like, ‘Mousy?!’ It’s so crazy. She’s totally not that anymore. It’s been really fun. I’ll do it forever – as long as they let me.”

Asked if she’d like to bring Country singer Cherlene back at some point, Greer said absolutely. “I really liked that version of [Cheryl]. Also I’m like a terrible singer but also a frustrated Country star. Two beers and some karaoke, forget it.”

And Amber has warm and fuzzy feelings about cocaine-addled Pam. “You know, I really liked cocaine Pam. But I will say I think I said the word cocaine probably like a million times in the season. I liked that she was like pin-up hot for a little while. A lot of people hated it. ‘We want old Pam back!’ So, I’m glad she’s back. I’m glad I got to do that but I’m glad she’s back to what we love.”

Eliza Taylor Interview on ‘The 100’ Season 3 and Clarke’s Journey

The CW’s The 100, a riveting science fiction series filled with interesting and complex characters, will return in early 2016 for its third season. Series creator Jason Rothenberg has crafted an edgy show that isn’t afraid to kill off fan favorite characters, if their deaths make sense within the story. And speaking with Eliza Taylor (“Clarke Griffin”) at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con, she confirmed that she’s always a little afraid of opening a script and reading about Clarke’s death. “I’m just like really nice to everyone so that that doesn’t happen,” said Taylor, laughing. “It’s definitely a scary thing. You never know who is going to go next.”

The cast hasn’t been provided with details on season three so even if Taylor wanted to give away any juicy tidbits, she couldn’t. “We never know. I’m used to it now. We never actually get too much information,” explained Taylor. “I kind of like it that way, although I am always scared that they’re going to kill me. It’ll be like open a script, ‘Oh, great.'”

What she could say about Clarke in the upcoming season is that she’ll be off on her own. “I can definitely guarantee that she’s losing her mind a little bit. We’re starting season three three months after the season finale. So, she’s been on her own for quite some time which I’m really excited to play. It’s going to get weird,” said Taylor. “It was very un-Clarke-like to just abandon her people like that. So, I don’t know how long it’s going to take for her to go back to them. I hope she does though. I really do.”

She also revealed that the series’ tone will be darker than even season two. “As if you’d think that was possible, yeah. Yeah, I think it is,” said Taylor. “I mean, it’s going to be different – really different – in the way that we’ve got more of a sci-fi aspect with the artificial intelligence. I think that that’s going to be cool.”

Taylor hopes that Clarke will deal with both Lexa (played by Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) in season three. The relationships have been splintered and Clarke’s not sure how the three will interact – if at all – in the upcoming season. “I’d love it if Lexa came back because I think that would be really explosive. So, yeah, we’ll see,” said Taylor. As for Octavia and Clarke’s relationship, Taylor said, “I think it’s going to be hard. She’s not in the good books. I think that that’ll be pretty explosive too, actually. I hope that they reconcile though because I love working with Marie. She’s the bomb.”

Rothenberg’s The 100 is full of interesting worlds for the characters to explore, something which Taylor’s thankful about. “It’s great to be opening up all these worlds. We’re creating this incredible sort of network. Jason’s a huge fan of Game of Thrones so that’s where he gets that from. But yeah, like the City of Light and Polis. I would love to see us go to the Ice Nation. I don’t know where we’d shoot that – maybe in Whistler or something. But I think that would be really cool,” said Taylor.

‘Damien’ – Bradley James and Glen Mazzara Interview

Bradley James and Glen Mazzara Interview on Damien
Bradley James and Glen Mazzara at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con.

Damien star Bradley James and writer/executive producer Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) teamed up to talk about A&E’s new horror series at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con. Premiering in 2016, the series will focus on Damien Thorn as a young adult coming to terms with the fact that he is the Antichrist. The cast of Damien includes Barbara Hershey as his mentor and Omid Abtahi as Damien’s close friend. Meganlyn Echikunwoke and The Walking Dead‘s Scott Wilson are also key players in this upcoming horror series.

During our roundtable interview at Comic Con, Mazzara confirmed this is a sequel to 1976’s The Omen starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick and not a remake. “We are taking that as our starting point,” said Mazzara. “We’re ignoring the second and third films in that original trilogy. We’re just using the events of the original film.”

Damien Comic Con Poster

“In season one, Damien’s coming to grips with his life and trying to figure this out. And as he develops along a certain path where he’s supposed to bring about the apocalypse, that’s really the story of the entire show,” explained Mazzara. “What’s been fun is we really have spent a lot of time creating the character. And then I feel like the story that unfolds has to stay true to that character instead of some larger mythology, let’s say. I really feel like this is a character piece. It’s a thriller, it has a lot of great horror. But people watch TV because it has cool people doing cool stuff every week, and it’s about those characters that we care about, and that’s why we watch them.”

Asked if there are any particular relationships between characters in the series that he’s found particularly interesting, Mazzara said, “What’s been really great is when you start developing a show you’re thinking about these characters. You’re thinking about the stories and how they’re going to drive story. Then you bring in the actors. The way we work is I’ll have a lot of conversations with the actors and say, ‘What do you think about this character?’ And as you do your work, people call and respond to the material. I’ve had a lot of stories that have been inspired from those conversations. I feel like it’s all a process.

What’s really been exciting is working with Bradley and Barbara and the way that that relationship just felt so natural once we got it up on its feet. It’s a lot of fun to write. I’m not going to say it’s my favorite because I don’t want to play favorites, but that’s been something that has felt very, very satisfying to write, very natural. I feel like seeing these two on screen together, you guys bring out the best in each other.”

Mazzara said there will not be any flashback sequences to the original film, but the events of that film will be referred to. Fans of The Omen will be able to pick up on Easter eggs in Damien if they’re paying attention. Mazzara also revealed that we’ll slowly learn what Damien’s life has been like in the years since his parents’ deaths.

As for playing the title role in a TV series based on a classic horror film, James said he never felt any pressure. “It’s the difference between approaching going for a part and going, ‘I really, really want this,’ and approaching the part saying, ‘How do I achieve this?’ And so it’s not so much about the pressure of doing the job as just focusing on the work that you’re doing,” said James. “Reading the script evoked a lot of things in my imagination so it was more to do with that kind of level of inspiration as opposed to anything having to do with pressure.”

The trailer gives away the fact that the iconic line, “It’s all for you, Damien,” will be included in the series. Asked how it felt to have an actor say that line to him, James replied, “We’ve had a couple moments of people saying that and I think, again, it’s not so much approaching it as, ‘Oh, that’s an iconic line,’ it’s more approaching it as, ‘What the hell are you talking about?'”

So, is Damien an anti-hero in the series? Is it possible to make him a sympathetic character? “I think Damien and all of the characters are involved in a set of circumstances that is terrifying for all of them. He has a unique perspective, and what’s important is to make that character’s perspective understandable to the audience so that you care about him. You feel for him. I think part of what makes him sympathetic is that he has a great deal of humanity,” said Mazzara. “He may have evil tendencies. He may have an evil side to him…”

“Who doesn’t?” chimed in James.

“But he’s a complex character and I think Bradley’s done a great job of infusing that character with that,” said Mazzara.

Jamie Lee Curtis Interview – ‘Scream Queens’ and the Horror Genre

Jamie Lee Curtis Interview on Scream Queens

Horror movie icon Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Dean Cathy Munsch in Fox’s much anticipated new series Scream Queens premiering on September 22, 2015. The series, which comes from Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Glee), Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, is a blend of horror, comedy, and mystery. At the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con Curtis added to that description, saying Scream Queens isn’t what you’d expect and will keep the audience on their toes as they attempt to figure out each character.

“It is a wild ride and it has no reflection on a classic horror trope. It is wickedly funny and deeply dark, and a little violent and super fashion-y. Everything you think about a character does not add up. You think you know Dean Munsch and then by the end of the episode you’re [questioning that],” explained Curtis. “It is not a classic horror trope at all.”

Curtis’ co-stars include Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Oliver Hudson, Keke Palmer, and Nick Jonas, with Michele and Roberts describing Curtis as the group’s den mother, their protector, and incredibly supportive. Curtis returned the compliments, saying, “I’m 56 years old. I have a 28-year-old daughter and a 19-year-old son who’s walking around Comic-Con dressed as Trafalgar Law from One Piece. Believe me, I’m going to nest with my little birds.

The first scene I have is with Emma Roberts in my office, and that was the first scene we shot. It’s a six-page dialogue scene ping-pong match between the two of us. And I’m telling you, it was like, ‘Hi, I’m Jamie.’ ‘I’m Emma.’ Sit down and it’s like, ‘Okay, let’s shoot this.’ And it was like, ‘Okay, boom, let’s hit it!’ And this girl starts hitting ping pong balls at me and I’m like, ‘Whoa, damn! I better pay attention here.’ No warm-up. She is firing aces at me and I’m thinking, ‘I really got to be on my game here.’ 7:15 in the morning in New Orleans on the first day, and that’s how it’s been with every one of them.”

“Each of these girls has inhabited these people. They’ve eaten them. They are just…it’s like garlic breath. They are just giving it back to you every second. It’s really extraordinary. I think it just is a testament to a professionalism that young people actually do have that we kind of take for granted. I think it really speaks to Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan who have created this sort of triumvirate of talent that are very clear. ‘We will give it to you. You need to give it back.’ Therefore it means give it back, know your sh*t, and deliver it. And that’s how I’ve had an experience with every one of these girls.”

Reflecting on her career and on the genre that launched it, Curtis expressed a three-decades-long fondness for horror fans who’ve supported her since she was 19. “I’ve always tried to maintain the idea that we’re all trying to get our footing in show business. I don’t care who you are. When you start out young, you try to get your footing in the business. And for me I landed on a mountaintop at 20. What supported me was a genre that I didn’t particularly like.

I’m not a horror film fan, but the genre supported my work,” explained Curtis. “For as long as I’ve been working, I understand that without them I wouldn’t have a career and I’m grateful. I’m grateful to this unbelievably loyal, devoted fan base – gentle fan base. And so for me, it’s a return to them and it’s like going home again. It’s like coming home to your very big crazy, loud, fun extended family who loves you. That’s how I feel.”

Douglas Booth and Bella Heathcote ‘Pride & Prejudice & Zombies’ Interview

Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows) and Douglas Booth (Romeo and Juliet) star in Screen Gems’ Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen. Grahame-Smith took Austen’s classic tale and inserted zombies, twisting the dramatic romance into a horror period piece. Heathcote and Booth were among the P&P&Z cast members who took part in a panel at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con, discussing the genre-bending film that’s heading to theaters on February 5, 2016. In addition to participating in the panel in front of thousands of Comic Con attendees, Heathcote and Booth teamed up for roundtable interviews to talk more about their characters, zombies, and action scenes.

Bella Heathcote and Douglas Booth Interview:

Had you ever wanted to do the straight version of Pride and Prejudice?

Douglas Booth: “Being British, I’ve done a few of those before straight. Like, I’ve been in a BBC adaptation of Great Expectations. I played Pip in that, so I’ve done that. I’ve done period before so it was kind of exciting to try and do something and turn itself on its head, something a little different.”

Bella Heathcote: “For me, I loved it because it holds true what I love most about Pride and Prejudice which is the relationship, particularly the two love stories. And then I’ve just got the added bonus of actually being able to fight and be empowered in that way. So it was better than doing the straight version.”

How did you train?

Bella Heathcote: “There was a fair bit of a boot camp situation happening. We did Kung Fu. We had weapons training. It was a lot of choreographed fight training with the girls. It was great fun.”

Are you good at it?

Douglas Booth: “She was great at it. You should see. When you posted a picture on Instagram with your leg [high] up here. Don’t piss her off. She’ll kick you in the chin.”

Bella Heathcote: “I got really into it. I’m a very anxious person so I just channeled all that into fight training for four months before the film, so it was actually very helpful for me.”

How was your training, Douglas?

Douglas Booth: “I was all right. I was good. I didn’t get to do as much fighting as the girls. The girls definitely have the main kickass moments. You come and save me quite a few times, but I loved it. For me, I love horse riding. I’ve ridden since I was a kid so my favorite parts was getting back on a horse. I always love those parts.”

Tell us about your characters.

Douglas Booth: “I play Charles Bingley. He does fight. Everyone in this world has to learn to be able to survive. It’s a dangerous place, but the girls are sent away to China to learn Shaolin fighting. The Bennet girls are known throughout the land, as it were, for being this extremely tight unit of tough babes. The fighting focuses on that side of things. My part’s more our love story. I just get caught up in the fighting as well. I kill a few zombies.”

Besides fighting zombies, are there other differences between your characters and the original characters?

Douglas Booth: “Of course, what we brought to them ourselves as people. What I love about this is it’s not a zombie movie where some person’s getting chased from A to B. What’s fascinating, interesting is how this amazing, enduring love story, tale that we know, Pride and Prejudice, how will that hold up amid the most bizarre circumstances? A zombie apocalypse, a plague. How will Mrs. Bennet go about marrying off her daughters? They’ve got different problems. It’s not necessarily about dowry. It’s things like they went for their training in China but the conventional thing to do is to go to Japan. So some people look down on them for that. There’s all these different things, different kind of quirks. It’s different and interesting for that.”

What kind of zombies do we see? Are they slow or fast or practical effects?

Bella Heathcote: “There’s actually different grades of zombies. So there’s like the neo-zombie who have just started to turn, and they can still completely be a part of society without anyone knowing. And then as they degenerate, they become fairly gruesome and I feel like they get faster. Don’t you feel like they get faster and faster as they get scarier?”

Douglas Booth: “Yeah, I think the interesting thing is that initially you can get bitten and you can conceal it and they can live amongst [us] knowing fully well they’re a zombie without wanting to reveal it because as soon as you reveal it, you’re probably going to be put to death because there’s no coming back. So, you get people trying to live. Sometimes you’re not quite sure who is a zombie and as they develop, they have three or four different stages of deterioration and it gets pretty gross. We have this amazing Oscar-winning prosthetics guy who did all the stuff on The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep. He came in and did some amazing work. He has a whole team. He created some really cool stuff.”

Are you, like the rest of the world, in zombie mode with The Walking Dead?

Douglas Booth: “I’ve never been a massive zombie follower myself which is why this was a really interesting experience to do. I love Austen and it’s amazing to see this mixed, to see this twist. Bring it because I’m not the biggest fan of just a zombie movie where people are just being ravaged, killed, this, that, just for the sake of horror. That’s not my type of film. Some people love it which is great, but this has a real story to it, has a bit more of a heart.”

Bella Heathcote: “I agree with that. You actually care about the characters and you want them to be okay for a whole other reason other than just for the sake of survival.”

Douglas Booth: “And also care about the zombies as well. It’s pretty sh*t. People talk about zombie movies and zombies. All it is really is it could happen to us. It’s a plague. It sends someone into a certain thing. Look what’s happening in the world right now. There’s so many great humanitarian issues about people getting a sort of plague and what happens if this just doesn’t kill them, they turn crazed and they start attacking the population. Zombie movies can be set in reality too as well.”

Why do love and war, even zombie war, go so nicely together?

Douglas Booth: “Because war is all about loss and when you’re in love, you’re terrified to lose it I suppose.”

Bella Heathcote: “If it’s your last day on earth, what’s most important to you? It’s your relationships. It’s not all the other stuff. When those circumstances are set, when there’s war, what is important becomes really clear.”

Danielle Panabaker Interview: ‘The Flash’ Season 2 and Killer Frost

Danielle Panabaker Interview on The Flash Season 2
Danielle Panabaker at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con (Photo by Richard Chavez / Showbiz Junkies)

Danielle Panabaker confessed that she’s been yelled at before for giving too much away about upcoming episodes of The CW’s The Flash, so she was very careful how she answered questions during roundtables interviews at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con. One thing she could discuss was becoming Killer Frost since it had already been teased in the season one finale. Fans got a very brief look at her costume, and Panabaker said she’s looking forward to the ultimate transition to playing the super-villain.

“Obviously, I’m extremely enthusiastic about becoming Killer Frost and I want it to happen yesterday,” said Panabaker. “But, it’s going to be exciting to see that journey, to see how it happens.”

Panabaker said the wig, the makeup, and the costume went through many changes before they found just the right look for Killer Frost. “It was exciting as an actor because it’s a truly transformative look,” explained Panabaker. “The first costume that she built was an actual one-piece like a jumpsuit, very Catwoman-esque. Then one week, I showed up for a fitting and she’s like, ‘I scrapped it. We’re starting from scratch. It needs to be sexier.’ I was like, ‘Okay, great.’ So, it was an evolution.”

The change into Killer Frost will mean Panabaker will be called upon to participate in more action scenes. “I asked them about that,” said Panabaker when asked if she’s ready to start training. “I’m desperate to get out there and fight with the boys. Not when it’s raining…but any other time.”

And while she’s more than ready to take on fight training, she’s not quite as enthusiastic about the effects used when Grant Gustin as The Flash runs out of the room. The look is done with air jets blowing and Panabaker admits she used to take the brunt of the air blows. “They think it’s funny when my hair blows back. But you know what? We have a great special effects team and as the season progressed, they got really good. In the beginning, they were like blowing my hair in my face. Hair’s messed up, makeup’s messed up, it takes a while to reset. So we perfected the art of having them very glamorously blow it back.”
