Matt Thompson Interview on ‘Archer’ Season Six, the Baby, and Guest Stars

Archer‘s season six kicked off on January 8, 2015 on FX and executive producer Matt Thompson promises this new season will be loaded with guest stars yet it won’t forget about the characters audiences have come to love. Fans may have been split over the dramatic changes made to the series in season five, but the creative minds behind the animated series aimed at adult audiences are nothing if not risk-takers.

Chatting with journalists during a conference call, Thompson talked about what’s in store and why it’s important to shake things up every now and again.

Matt Thompson Archer Interview

Can you talk a little bit about what to expect this season and maybe give us a little tease about some upcoming guest stars?

Matt Thompson: “Yes, I would love to. This season, when Adam [Reed] and I sat down and talked about what we wanted to do, we wanted to get back to what we felt the show was at its core, which is a show about Archer and spying and what I would say is like more visceral action; people going out there and high stakes stuff and people dying and that sort of thing. Last season, we had a blast and we kind of took a detour from what we usually do. They kind of bungled their way around selling cocaine. If you go back and watch, nobody even dies in that season. And so what we’re doing now is getting back to what we do best.

Archer, he’s a spy. He’s a bad guy who’s a good guy who’s a bad guy, and we’re going to go back to seeing his personal journey in this world to which I think the main focus of the season is a lot about him, a lot about his relationship with Lana and how that’s changed when there’s a baby. We can see Archer taking one step towards being a better person and a better father and then maybe two steps backward from being not wanting to do that, kind of constantly evolving without evolving. In fact, in the season premiere, we see he’s ran away from being a father altogether and he’s off in the jungle somewhere fighting with Japanese soldiers. That is the main thing that I can see happening with this this year.

A couple of things that I’m most excited about are some of the people that we have joining us for this season. One of the things that this show does is it doesn’t really inform people about things that have happened in the past. We’re just kind of always moving forward and we like expect or hope that the audience keeps up with us. There’s a great character from Season one of Archer named Conway Stern who everybody loved because he was somebody who was just as good or better at everything than Archer is. The piece is played by Coby Bell and he’s back early on in the season to see what’s happening with him.

What I was saying is that that’s one of the things I think that the show does is like we’re not going to go back and tell you everything that happened in Season 1 with Conway Stern. We just hope that you know and can follow along. It’s not necessary to know what happened in Season 1, but it makes the episode more enjoyable.

Some other things that we have happening is we wrote a specific episode for Kumail Nanjiani as a Pakistani spy. We actually wanted to make sure before we wrote the part that he wanted to do it because we couldn’t foresee anybody else doing it. And, luckily, he agreed to do the part without a script being written, which was really super cool of him. The episode came out pretty great.

Also, [we’re] meeting Lana’s parents played by C.C.H. Pounder and Keith David, and it’s kind of fun to see Lana in a slightly different role as the child. Lana’s always telling us what to do almost and kind of being basically our collective consciousness. And now to see her dealing with her parents, it’s pretty fun.

One of my favorite things about that episode is like they’re these Berkeley professors out in California and Archer and the baby and Lana go see them. There’s a moment in the hot tub with Archer and Lana’s parents that pretty much defines who Archer is as a guy. I mean, you put him in the hot tub with Lana’s parents and things don’t go well.

Also back this season, the people that I missed the most in Season 5 were Barry and Katya. They’re both back in episodes this season. I just like the way that Conway Stern works well with Archer because Archer has somebody to play off of. Barry’s the same way for Archer. He always kind of seems to win and lose. I like it when there is that relationship where Archer can bounce off of somebody so hard. So, getting Barry back in an episode; getting Katya back… Actually, the episode that Barry is in is one of our best that we’ve done.

Allison Tolman is playing Edie, Pam’s sister, and to have that come together with Barry’s return and seeing there’s this TV troupe. Like Cheers did it really well with Norm’s wife. Norm would walk in and it would be like, ‘Oh, what’s up with your wife, Norm?’ and he’d say something awful. I think Edie was that way for us, Pam’s sister.

We always talked about these terrible things that Edie did and we never had any intention of showing you Edie until we got drunk with Allison Tolman at a FX party and listened to her great Wisconsin accent that she did on Fargo and kind of convinced us to do it.

Also, Rob Huebel who we’ve always thought is a super hilarious guy is joining us. There’s a movie from the ‘70s called the The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood. It’s basically our take on that old Clint Eastwood movie with Rob Huebel as a pretty funny mountain-climbing guy.

But I will say that my very favorite episode of the season isn’t with guest stars. I think the show really works best when it is all of our characters just bitching at each other. You’ll see it like when they all get on a blimp together, they’ll all get on a train together, they’ll all go down to Sealab together. There’s an episode this season where everybody just gets trapped in an elevator and then they just bitch at each other.

I love, because these characters feel so real to me, just listening to them all sit there and bitch at each other. It’s great. It was kind of a challenging episode for us because how do you make trapped in an elevator interesting, and I really think we did it. I really like that one a lot.”

Is there any chance we’re going to see the baby go on any missions?

Matt Thompson: “The baby’s out there, yes. There are some things that happen with the baby. Like Everybody Loves Raymond, it was never a story about Raymond’s kids. So, this series is not suddenly going to become Archer and Lana’s baby series, but there is parts where the emotion of Archer and Lana especially is heightened because there are parts when the baby is in danger. There’s specifically…I think about the Kumail Nanjiani episode and there’s danger for the baby, or even the episode for Lana’s parents and meeting them.”

Do you do a lot of casting based on who you meet at parties?

Matt Thompson: “I was at another Fox party and I was having a drink with Jessica Walter and she saw Keith David and evidently they’ve known each other for a long time. She grabbed me by my arm and she pulled me over to him and she said, ‘If Keith David isn’t Lana’s father, I will never speak to you again.’ I said, ‘Yes, ma’am. Yes, ma’am. Let me write this down. Nice to meet you, Keith. Looking forward to making that happen because I don’t care to have Jessica mad at me.'”

[…] We did find something for Matthew Rhys this year. It’s because he’s one of my very favorite people to have a beer with. So, I went to the Super Bowl – Adam Reed and I went to this past Super Bowl that Seattle laid it on them and we sat next to Matthew and we got a little lit. Matthew is from Wales and he told us a story. He kind of entertained this whole bus load of people with a story about a true thing from history about these Wales separatists who were battling the English in the ‘70s and they blew things up with a couple of bombs and stuff like that.

It was such a good tale that he told that we went back and wrote an episode based on his tale. And so, for the very first time, there’s going to be a credit in the episode that says, ‘Written by Adam Reed from a rousing tale by Matthew Rhys.’

Matthew plays the part of the Wales separatist, and there’s this really cool The Americans couple of jokes in there, which is this Wales separatist terrorist keeps going in between like, ‘Hey, can do you an American accent?’ and he’ll put on this really silly wig and glasses and then he’ll talk in his American accent. We kind of just like sh*thouse him about your accent is terrible or whatever, but that’s us kind of joking around with Matthew Rhys about how he’s always putting on a wig and then doing some sort of accent and the whole time, he’s really a guy from Wales, but it’s pretty funny.”

What is Lana’s mindset going to be? Does the baby act like more of a wild card for her now? How does she balance being a mother and being a spy?

Matt Thompson: “She’s conflicted. She goes through times of wanting to quit, wanting to get away from it. There’s times where we’re trying to take a vacation from the baby. And so I think more than ever, Lana seems conflicted and she doesn’t know what she wants to do. She also will go on a mission and leave the baby in somebody else’s care, which is driving her crazy because, one, Malory thinks that Lana’s breasts are filled with corn syrup or something and she’s constantly fattening up the baby. So, Malory is like feeding the baby ice chips to try and slim the baby down. Or else like leaving Pam in charge of the baby and like, ‘Oh, my god, what happened to the baby?! Where’s the baby?!’

It creates a lot of stress on Lana. She doesn’t really have a good handle with how to deal with it. She’s kind of making it up as she goes along and sometimes she’s handling it well and sometimes she’s not handling it well.”

How important was it to completely change things up the way you did last season?

Matt Thompson: “I think it was most important for the people who sit around and think about what the show should do. We needed to clear our brains out. We wanted to take a step sideways that was still inside of our universe, but do it. More than anything else, it was just like a palate cleanser almost.

Internally, we love it. We loved what that season was. We love that we made a Country music album. We love that we did something very different without doing something different. I think it’s some of our strongest work if you can sit back and watch it on the face of it. At the same time, there’s a reason why shows don’t change their standard formula too hard because it does upset the apple cart a little bit. And so, it was never designed as, ‘Hey, this is what we’re doing from now on.’ It was never even thought of that way. It was just thought of as, ‘We want to go and take this small break from ourselves that isn’t really even truly a break and then go back to doing what we do best.’

We do realize what we do best is stories about Sterling Archer, him being a dick, but also being a somewhat good guy and some sort of spy, intrigue, people are going to die, and then insert jokes along the way. We do realize that is when the show is working at its best. We went away from that formula last season, but I’m really glad we did. At the same time, I’m just as excited now to get back to doing what it is that we do best.”

Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins Star in ‘The Dresser’ for Starz and BBC

Starz and BBC are teaming up on The Dresser, a film adaptation of Ronald Harwood’s play, and have set Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen to star in the dramatic film. Richard Eyre (Stage Beauty, Notes on a Scandal) is on board as director and filming on the made-for-television movie will begin later this year in London.

The Dresser will be the first film Hopkins and McKellen have worked on together.

Announcing the project, Starz’s Managing Director said, “The Dresser is a timeless and poignant story about the relationship between artists, and to have this classic play brought to life on-screen by such acting giants as Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen is thrilling. We are glad to be working in partnership again with the BBC and Colin Callender on this very special project, and to be establishing a relationship with acclaimed theater producer Sonia Friedman.”

“This production is a testament to the commitment of the BBC and Starz to bring quality drama to the screen,” stated executive producer Colin Callender. “It is also a testament to Ronald Harwood’s glorious writing that we have been able to bring together such a wonderful creative team from the worlds of film, television and the theatre.”

The Plot, Courtesy of Samuel French Publishing:

Based on the author’s own experiences as dresser to Sir Donald Wolfit, this bracing, heartbreaking drama is an elegy to a by-gone era. Backstage at a theatre in the English provinces during WWII, Sir, the last of the great breed of English actor/managers, is in a bad way tonight, as his dresser Norman tries valiantly to prepare him to go on stage as King Lear. Unsure of his lines as well as who and where he is supposed to be, Sir is adamantly determined to roar his last. With Herculean effort on the part of Norman, Sir finally makes it on stage and through the performance, no thanks to an air raid courtesy of the Luftwaffe.

‘iZombie’ TV Series Trailer Arrives Starring Rose McIver

iZombie TV Series Trailer with Rose McIver

The CW’s iZombie has a March premiere date and it has a first-look trailer. The zombie comedy/drama/crime series will premiere on March 17, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT with Rose McIver in the starring role as a zombie who helps solve crimes by seeing the memories of dead people after eating their brains.

Executive produced by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, and based on the comics by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, iZombie features Malcolm Goodwin, Robert Buckley, Rahul Kohli, and David Anders.

The Plot:

Olivia “Liv” Moore was a rosy-cheeked, disciplined, over-achieving medical resident who had her life path completely mapped out…until the night she attended a party that unexpectedly turned into a zombie feeding frenzy. Now as one of the newly undead, Liv is doing her best to blend in and look as human as possible. Her appearance passes for “Goth,” with shockingly pale skin and nearly white hair, and her demeanor has gone from exuberant to exhausted.

The change in Liv is baffling to her former fiancé, Major, her mother, Eva, and her best friend and roommate, Peyton, who still has the high-energy, Type-A personality that Liv has completely abandoned. Despite her post-traumatic ennui, Liv has devised a clever way to resist her baser urges to devour fresh human brains – she’s taken a job in the Seattle coroner’s office. In this appropriately dead-end job, Liv can secretly snack on the brains of the many Jane and John Doe corpses that make a final stop in the morgue. Despite carefully covering her tracks, Liv’s brilliant but eccentric boss, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, discovers her secret and is surprisingly excited about the scientific possibilities. Dr. Ravi even helps Liv in her search for Blaine, the zombie responsible for her current undead status.

Even with her boss’ enthusiasm, Liv remains resigned to an eternity as a zombie without hope or purpose – until she realizes that with every brain she consumes, she retains a portion of that person’s memories. Liv suddenly begins to experience disturbing and often violent visions from the point of view of the murder victims. Much to the surprise of Dr. Ravi and homicide detective Clive Babineaux, Liv often has detailed knowledge of crime scenes and motives that she can’t easily explain. Posing as a psychic, she works with Detective Babineaux to investigate these crimes and discover who is responsible. It’s not the same as being alive again, but at least she can find purpose in her undead existence by helping Clive solve the murders of those who are indeed fully dead.

Sam Heughan Interview on ‘Outlander’ Season 1 Part 2, Romance, and Sex Scenes

Sam Heughan Interview on Outlander Season One Part Two

Starz’s critically acclaimed Outlander series has fans anxiously awaiting the debut of the second half of season one. Unfortunately, that won’t arrive until April 4, 2015. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait that long to hear what Sam Heughan has to say about what viewers can expect when the second half finally arrives.

Fans have fallen hard for Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser, and the handsome Scot is grateful for how readers of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling book series have embraced the show and the cast. And during the 2015 TCA winter press event, Heughan talked about the books and the complex characters Gabaldon created that he and his co-stars are responsible for bringing to life in the series.

– A Word of Warning: He discusses what’s coming up and there are potentials for spoilers if you haven’t read the books.

Sam Heughan Interview

Now that Claire and Jamie are finally together, what is their biggest hurdle in the second part of season one?

Sam Heughan: “Wow, the biggest hurdle is what happens at the very end of the season. The whole second part really taxes their relationship. They’re trying, fighting their way to get back to where they were on the wedding night, really. It’s the great tragedy of the show, I think, for this wonderful relationship is [that it’s] actually tainted for good. I don’t think we can ever get back there. They’re constantly being tested by the things that happen. Jamie’s having to grow up. They’re all having to come to terms with where they are. They’re constantly trying to find a way to reconnect and the very end of the season, they’re both left in a very tentative place.”

She challenges everything he knows and he’s an innocent. How do you make that transition from a naive man to someone believing something fantastic?

Sam Heughan: “Yeah, he’s always suspected. He’s always known she’s got a secret. With the witch trial and all the things up to that, he has to ask her the question whether she’s a witch, and he also doesn’t believe that but he knows she’s got a big secret. So when she finally does reveal that she’s from the future, and he says he believes her, he trusts her word. So he believes that she’s talking the truth. Whether or not he can get his head around the enormity of what that actually means, that takes a long time, but ultimately they have this bond and it’s the fact that he trusts her and she trusts him.”

Are you still doing a lot of your own stunts?

Sam Heughan: “Yeah, I’m doing them all, yes. Yes. I really enjoy it. In episode 10 you may have seen there’s a duel. I actually had injured myself on that the day before but I was determined to film that. I kind of used it as well. He gets injured in that duel, so it was really a bit foolish but I love all that side of it, and the horse riding as well.”

Are you fiercely romantic?

Sam Heughan: “Yes, I like to try and be romantic, but I’m a guy so we’re not the best at it, but we do try. I do like to try.”

Does it work?

Sam Heughan: “It’s working, kind of. We’ll see. Ask me in 10 years time.”

Have you talked to Ron Moore about how you’re going to portray Jamie and Claire

aging significantly in the second book?

Sam Heughan: “I think we discussed the fact that we actually already aged on the show already. No, we haven’t got as far as that yet. I think it’s going to be a lot more down to the way we play it rather than relying on prosthetics and whatever. There’s a lot that can be done with makeup.

I’m really interested to see where these characters go in the future, but having said that, we’ve already done 109 the voiceover, and we discussed where Jamie is at that point. Is it now, after this all happened? Or is it in the future? Or is it when he’s a ghost? We’re starting to have a lot of parallel stories, a lot of different time jumps. I think Ron will probably play with that a lot more.”

Have you had chemistry tests with anyone for the roles of Roger and Brianna?

Sam Heughan: “They are starting casting pretty much now, so yeah, soon. I soon will.”

Did you have any idea what would happen when you took this role?

Sam Heughan: “No, I was pretty naive. I mean, this is wonderful. It’s really good fun and it’s nice to be in Scotland. We’re kind of out of all the bandwagon, so it’s really great. We can just put our heads down and work and it’s lovely to come here and get some sort of reception. I’m glad it’s been received really well.”

Are the sex scenes steamier in the second half?

Sam Heughan: “I think we try to approach all the intimate scenes or the punishments, spanking, or the torture and the rape and violence, we try to approach it with the fact of what do we need to see? What is this doing to their relationship? How does this move them forward or backwards? As Caitriona [Balfe] said on the panel, we then sit down with the writers. We read it through. We work out what works and what doesn’t. We rehearse it and then on the day I guess we just go for it. It is a process of what we want the audience to feel or see.

Honestly, I think we’re all firm believers that less is more. We want it to be an adult show as well. Showing a pair of breasts is like well, we don’t want to be some sort of smutty porn. We want it to have an effect or for a reason. I think the viewers will be surprised and challenged. I think there’s a lot of times that they’re going to be shocked.”

Are all the ladies swooning for you?

Sam Heughan: “I’ve yet to see a lady swooning but if they are, that’s wonderful.”

What is your relationship with Outlander author Diana Gabaldon?

Sam Heughan: “She is so loyal and I can’t thank her enough. She has supported us in every way. Without her, I couldn’t do it. We have a relationship that’s really nice. We talk via e-mail or twitter. She gives me advice. We just talk about other things other than the show. It’s nice to see her.”

Do you have time for any other projects?

Sam Heughan: “I’m doing a movie here in Los Angeles next month. It’s called When the Starlight Ends. It’s written and directed by Adam Segal. It’s an independent. It’s a lovely little independent movie about a writer at the end of a relationship. I’m excited about it.”

What role on TV right now would you like to play, other than a different character on Outlander?

Sam Heughan: “Wow, I’m loving The Walking Dead. I’d love to kill some zombies, but I’m really enjoying The Knick, actually. I think it’s fantastic and I love Clive Owen’s performance. So maybe something on that.”

*Caution: this answer contains a spoiler for those who haven’t read Dragonfly in Amber. Skip it if it’s still on your to-do list.* Have you read Dragonfly in Amber yet and if so, what are your favorite parts?

Sam Heughan: “Yeah, I started last year but I restarted again and I’m almost finished. I’m just really excited because where we leave the season, the end of season one is basically telling everything that happens in season two. I think Claire and Jamie are both in two very difficult places. If you’ve read the books it’s not a spoiler, she’s pregnant and he has had this terrible thing happen to him. He’s been broken and their relationship has been tainted so they’re both in two separate worlds. Yet they’re married and they love each other but yet it’s not black and white. It’s very gray.”

2015 Golden Globes Winners: A Night Full of Pleasant Surprises

2015 Golden Globes Award Winners

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not vote for the biggest names in each category as they have in previous years and instead this year’s Golden Globes ceremony was full of surprises. From Gina Rodriguez taking home the Best Actress, TV Comedy or Musical and Transparent snagging the Best Comedy Series award to Eddie Redmayne being named best actor in a drama for The Theory of Everything, the 2015 Golden Globes were anything but predictable. It didn’t even matter that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s opening bit was really tame and that they only poked fun at the most predictable of targets (the Sony hack, The Interview, and Bill Cosby) or that the hosts disappeared for the rest of the show after kicking things off.

This year’s awards show will be remembered because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association actually took some chances and awarded performances, shows, and films that weren’t the odds-on favorites going into the January 11, 2015 event. The night was also full of moving speeches, with Michael Keaton, Kevin Spacey, George Clooney, Julianne Moore, and Gina Rodriguez all delivering memorable acceptance speeches from the heart.

The CW made a huge announcement at the 2015 Winter TCA press event today, giving new season renewal orders to eight of its current shows. The CW President Mark Pedowitz confirmed Supernatural, Arrow, The Flash, Reign, The 100, Jane the Virgin, The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals will all be back for the 2015-2016 season, renewing all of the network’s scripted series for the upcoming primetime season.

“Each of these series have helped define what The CW is today, a network that is home to smart, provocative, quality programming, targeting a savvy adult audience,” stated Pedowitz. “By picking up these shows now, our executive producers can start planning next season’s storylines, and rolling these shows out throughout next season guarantees The CW will have more proven original series for our fall, midseason and summer 2016 line-ups.”

Supernatural will return for season 11, The Vampire Diaries received a seventh season order, Arrow earned its fourth season, while The Originals, Reign, and The 100 will all be back for third seasons. Newcomers Jane the Virgin and The Flash will return for second seasons.

New ‘Chappie’ Trailer Offers More Action, More Emotion

Chappie Second Trailer with Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver

Neill Blomkamp’s third film, Chappie, focuses on a robot who can think for himself, feels emotions, and has hopes and dreams. Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) directed and co-wrote the sci-fi thriller which stars Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, and Sigourney Weaver.

Chappie also reunites Blomkamp with his District 9 and Elysium star Sharlto Copley who handles the performance capture work of playing Chappie and making him come alive on the screen.

Columbia Pictures will release Chappie in theaters on March 6, 2015.

The Plot:

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

‘Better Call Saul’ Extended Trailer Offers Up New Scenes

Better Call Saul kicks off season one on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT followed by episode two on Monday, February 9th at 10pm. And as we move closer to the show’s premiere AMC has unveiled a lengthy trailer with new footage that shows Saul’s law practice wasn’t always successful.

The Mondays at 10pm timeslot will be the Breaking Bad prequel’s normal timeslot, with season one consisting of 10 episodes starring Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as Saul Goodman. Also back for the prequel is Jonathan Banks as Mike Erhmantraut, with Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, and Michael Mando joining the world of the shady Albuquerque lawyer.

The Plot:

Better Call Saul is set six years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny and hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside and often against Jimmy is “fixer” Mike Erhmantraut, a beloved character first introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy’s transformation into a man who puts the criminal in “criminal lawyer.”
