‘Selma’ Movie Review – A Compelling Film Featuring Terrific Performances

Selma Movie Review

“What happens when a man stands up and says enough is enough?” asks Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) to one of his close friends and followers as they sit in a jail cell after one of their Civil Rights protests in the dramatic film, Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay.

Set in 1965, Selma chronicles the three month period in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the campaign to obtain equal voting rights for all black American citizens. King travels to Washington many times to try to secure support from President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) who’s hesitant to make this his number one priority with the Vietnam War raging and escalating on. Determined not to be derailed and knowing that this cause cannot wait any longer for the black community, King organizes and leads the epic historic march from Selma to Montgomery, culminating in the delivery of the speech which forces President Johnson to sign the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Powerful and engaging with fantastic performances, Selma recreates and captures vividly the struggle, racism, and the passion that was America in 1965. This is a historical biography that should be required viewing for all to see. David Oyelowo delivers one of the best performances of the year as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, almost disappearing into the role. His look, walk, voice and mannerisms bring the Civil Rights champion alive again up on the big screen. Oyelowo captures not only the strong, smart, and brave peaceful leader King was but also shows him with his faults as an unfaithful husband and at times a man doubting his own courage and willpower. It’s truly a mesmerizing performance.

Tom Wilkinson proves once again he’s one of if not the best character actor of his generation with his portrayal of President Johnson. He captures pitch perfect both the decent side of Johnson wanting to do as much as he can for the Civil Rights movement, and the political side of the man not wanting to alienate voters and juggling both the economics of the country as well as dealing with the war in Vietnam. There scenes together sizzle with energy and drama.

Perhaps the only flaw with the film is with its uneven pacing and the director’s tendency to overuse the slow motion effect to over-emphasize acts of violence during a small peaceful march broken up by the police as well as the first attempts to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Still, with perhaps the best ensemble performances of any cast in 2014 and an extremely dynamic recreation of the historical march, Selma is one of the best films of 2014 and should not be missed as it expands into additional theaters in 2015.

GRADE: A-

Selma is rated PG-13 for disturbing thematic material including violence, a suggestive moment, and brief strong language.

Running Time: 128 minutes

Pressures of the outside world take a hold of the family when newcomers Kevin Rahm (Mad Men), Tracy Spiridakos (Revolution) and Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) arrive at White Pine Bay. After a summer of living at the Bates Motel, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) and Norma have grown closer but there will always have that troubling question mark surrounding Norman. Something doesn’t feel right, but spite of his instincts, Romero finds himself continually drawn back to the Bates family — and to Norma. Familiar face, Bradley (Nicola Peltz) returns to surprise the family and digs up old memories.

As families are reunited, the lives of those who were left behind are challenged on a physical and emotional level. Interpersonal relationships are examined with intrigue and depth as strange phenomena begin to occur.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is dramatically altering the way Oscar nominations are announced. In previous years, only the major categories would be revealed during a live broadcast from LA in the early morning hours of a weekday in January (this year the announcement will take place on January 15th). However, Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said all of the 2015 Academy Awards nominees will be announced as part of a two-part presentation.

Per the official announcement, all 24 Oscar categories will be announced live by Chris Pine, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Alfonso Cuarón, and J.J. Abrams.

“Each of the three years we’ve produced the show, we have attempted to refresh elements of the process and the telecast,” said Zadan and Meron. “This year, we’re honored to start a new tradition that celebrates the contributions of all the nominees by announcing all 24 categories. We’re thrilled that a distinguished actor and two world-class film directors are part of the initial launch.”

“We’re delighted to have Chris, Alfonso and J.J. participate in the excitement of Nominations morning, which, for the first time, will highlight nominees in all categories,” said Boone Isaacs. “This new approach enables the Academy to further recognize excellence across our entire industry and underscore the full spectrum of the arts and sciences of motion pictures.”

Here’s the details on this year’s Oscar nominee announcements:

At 5:30 a.m. PT, Cuarón and Abrams will announce the nominees in the following categories: Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Original Song, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

At 5:38 a.m. PT, Pine and Boone Isaacs will take the stage to unveil the nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

‘Taken 3’ Movie Review – Liam Neeson’s Back in Action

Taken 3 Movie Review with Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace in ‘Taken 3’ (Photo: Daniel McFadden – © 2014 EUROPACORP – M6 FILMS)

“Listen carefully, Kim, I wanted you to hear this from me,” says Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson). “Dad, what’s wrong?” asks Kim (Maggie Grace). “Your mom is dead. I don’t know why, but I’m going to find out. Don’t trust anyone,” replies Mills who has just been framed for his ex-wife’s murder in the final installment in the action/thriller series Taken 3.

Framed for the brutal murder of his ex-wife, ex-covert operative Bryan Mills goes on the run and “down the rabbit hole” – as he and his ex-CIA buddies call it – to evade the local LAPD lead by the smarter-than-your-average-detective Frank Dotzler (Forest Whitaker). Determined to clear himself and find the real killers as well as who hired them, Mills once again must rely on his “particular set of skills,” which of course, include unbelievable car chases, explosions, hand-to-hand combat, and almost endless shoot-outs. Mills has to do all this while also protecting the only family he has left, his lovely daughter Kim who might just be the killers’ next target.

Fast-paced, loud, and mindless, Taken 3 is not the worst chapter in this absurd revenge fantasy thriller franchise just the most unoriginal. Instead of Neeson’s Mills doing the hunting, this time he’s on the run from the authorities, trying to clear himself of his ex-wife’s murder. Hello…everyone’s seen this movie already; it was called The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford. The only thing missing is the one-armed man.

The direction and editing are a choppy, blurred mess, with none of the car chases and big shoot-outs holding a candle to any of the exhilarating action scenes in the Bourne films or the original Die Hard movie – prime examples of how you do a GREAT action crime thriller. The first chase through neighborhoods of L.A. when Neeson’s Mills is trying to escape from the police is the only good chase sequence in the entire film.

Working in the film’s favor are the performances of Liam Neeson as the loving but incredibly lethal father Bryan Mills and Maggie Grace as his daughter. The few scenes between them are the best in Taken 3, in particular, the scene in which the two are briefly reunited while Mills is still on the run and he has the chance to briefly mourn Kim’s mom and check on his daughter’s safety.

Here’s hoping that this truly is the final installment of the Taken film franchise and that both Neeson and Grace can move on to far better projects.

GRADE: C-

Taken 3 is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action and for brief strong language.

Theatrical Release Date: January 9, 2015

Running Time: 109 minutes

The animated comedy series Bob’s Burgers has earned a sixth season from Fox, with the network giving the popular series an order for 22 new episodes. The renewal news doesn’t come as much of a surprise as the series earned an Emmy Award in 2014 and improved its ratings by 60% over season four’s finale.

“We can’t help but love the Belcher family. This gem of a series is a rare feel-good blend of sharp wit and genuine heart that fans and critics alike have continued to love throughout its five seasons on FOX,” stated Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group. “We are proud of Loren and Jim and the extremely talented voice cast who bring these unique characters to life with both humor and charm each week. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for Season Six.”

Bob’s Burgers comes from the creative mind of Loren Bouchard who serves as an executive producer and writer. Jim Dauterive also writes and executive produces the award-winning series.

The Plot:

Bob’s Burgers follows the ups and downs of Bob (H. Jon Benjamin), who runs Bob’s Burgers with the help of his wife, Linda (John Roberts), and their three kids, Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman) and Louise (Kristen Schaal). Despite the greasy counters and lousy location, Bob and his family are determined to make the business, and their everyday lives, a success.

John Travolta has signed up for his first starring role in a television series since playing Vinny Barbarino in the late ’70s on Welcome Back, Kotter, joining the cast of FX’s American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. The miniseries examines the O.J. Simpson trial, with Travolta set to play Simpson’s attorney Robert Shapiro.

FX previously announced Cuba Gooding Jr will play O.J. Simpson, and David Schwimmer will co-star as Simpson’s friend and attorney (and father of all those reality TV stars), Robert Kardashian. American Horror Story: Freak Show‘s Sarah Paulson will play lead prosecutor Marcia Clark.

In addition to being a part of the cast, Travolta will also be a producer on the 10-part miniseries. The series is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski, Brad Falchuk, and Dante Di Loreto, and Murphy will be directing the first episode. FX expects filming to begin this spring.

The Plot: Based on the book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, the miniseries is a look at the O.J. Simpson trial told from the perspective of the lawyers. It explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution overconfidence, defense shrewdness, and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.
